* Cally, in the Season 14 (and original series) finale "Condundrum." In the alternate reality (resulting from J.R. never being born and thus, never having met Cally), she remained in Haleyville, Alabama. Because of her illiterate background, she is forced into a sham marriage with a drunken mill worker named Jeb, who savagely abuses her at every turn, and forces her to do chores on their ramshackle farm. That's bad enough, but the real clincher: One night, while on a drunken rant after being warned by his boss to either stop showing up drunk or risk losing his job, he beats Cally (for not having supper ready). When the kids start crying, Jeb threatens to beat the life out of them. Cally has enough and, grabbing the shotgun, tells him he'd better not or he'll really regret it ... but Jeb begins advancing on her with his belt, until she shoots him dead. J.R. -- who had been watching the whole scene with his "angel," Adam -- is horrified, but then Adam reminds him that in their remote community, women are still considered property and have less than zero legal rights ... and unable to afford even an incompetent attorney, she is quickly convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

* In ''The Early Years'', Jock goes to visit his mentally-unstable wife, Amanda, after Ellie asks him to marry her. He tearfully tells Amanda that while he still loves her, he'll have to get a divorce because he has to marry someone else. Amanda is blissfully unaware of what is happening, and simply stares out at the sky as he tells her that he'll always support her no matter what.
