* TerminallyDependentSociety: Discussed by Jenner as one of the reasons the efforts at stopping the outbreak failed - the dependency on fossil fuels, and the infrastructure that comes with it, meant that once the power grid failed, and with no way of getting more fuel for the emergency generators, all international efforts at finding a cure slowly failed, with individual ones not far behind. By the time the survivors arrive at the CDC, it's almost literally running on fumes.

The episode opens with a [[{{Flashback}} flashback]] to the beginning of the ZombieApocalypse, wherein Shane tries to rescue the still-comatose Rick from the hospital, which is overrun with walkers. Witnessing military personnel opening fire on not just the undead, but also hospital staff and patients, he hastily tries to move Rick from his bed, but is unable to do so as Rick is still hooked up to various monitors. After an explosion, the hospital machinery fails and Shane puts his ear to Rick's chest to determine whether he is still alive. Unable to detect a heartbeat, Shane breaks down before leaving the room, putting a gurney against the door as a last-minute precaution to prevent the walkers from reaching him.
In the present day, the survivors are granted access to the CDC headquarters by Dr. Edwin Jenner, on the condition that they all submit to a blood test. Once inside, the group is treated to a full meal complete with wine while Jenner explains that he is the [[SoleSurvivingScientist only scientist remaining at the facility]], as many others left to be with their families or [[DrivenToSuicide committed suicide]] at the outbreak's onset.
Following the meal, the survivors are given the opportunity to indulge in the luxury of a hot shower, putting most of them in high spirits. However, Andrea is still [[DespairEventHorizon mourning the loss of her sister]] and [[ShowerOfAngst breaks down in the shower]] before being violently ill, whereupon Dale attempts to comfort her. Meanwhile a drunken Shane decides to confront Lori over her decision to end their relationship; an argument ensues, culminating in Shane [[NearRapeExperience attempting to rape Lori]]. He backs off when she scratches his neck in her efforts to push him away, however, and hastily leaves her alone.
The next morning, the group is feeling the effects of the previous night's alcohol consumption, although some are coping better than others. Jenner cooks breakfast for the survivors, but when Shane begins to push him for answers he takes them to one of the laboratories where he shows them a time-lapse MRI video of a person known only as Test Subject 19, who was infected after being bitten and volunteered to be observed. The video shows the progression of the disease as it attacks the brain, killing the patient before activity restarts in the brain stem, restoring the body to basic functions. The video ends with Jenner [[MercyKill shooting the reanimated patient]] [[BoomHeadshot in the head]].
Jenner explains to the group that brain stem reanimation can take place anywhere between a few minutes to eight hours after death, but higher brain functions are not restored. He then reveals that the disease seems to be a world wide phenomenon, and that so far no cure has been found; French doctors came close, but ultimately communication was lost. As the group struggles with the realization that the world as they knew it no longer exists, Dale notices a digital clock counting down on the wall. He asks Jenner what happens when it reaches zero, at which the scientist abruptly leaves the room without answering.
Suspicions raised, several of the survivors go to the generator room and discover that the last diesel tank is rapidly running out of fuel. At the same time, some of the facility's automated functions, such as the lighting and air conditioning, begin to power down. The group corners Jenner in the control room to demand an explanation, and he reluctantly admits that the power will run out completely when the clock runs down to zero; this will trigger an automatic self-destruct of the entire building, a failsafe intended to prevent the various lethal diseases housed inside the CDC from escaping. As the survivors react to this news, Jenner seals the control room, insisting that things are better this way as he is offering them a quick, painless death.
Rick and Lori attempt to reason with Jenner, asking why he held out this long when so many of his colleagues opted for suicide only to give up now, and Jenner reveals that Test Subject 19 was in fact his wife, a much more gifted scientist who made him promise to keep working on a cure, something he is no longer able to do with his tissue samples destroyed. With the clock ticking down, tensions rapidly escalate, and Daryl attempts to break the door down with an ax until Jenner points out that it is designed to withstand much greater forces, prompting Daryl to attack him instead. Shane also threatens the scientist, but both men relent when Rick points out that if they kill him, their deaths will be guaranteed.
With less than five minutes left on the clock, Jenner is finally won over by Rick's pleading with him to at least let them try; he reluctantly opens the control room doors, but warns that the external doors cannot be opened due to the decontamination procedure. Rick thanks him, but Jenner only informs him that there will come a day when he regrets this moment, and whispers something in Rick's ear before he leaves. As the rest of the group attempts to escape, Jacqui and Andrea both choose to remain behind with Jenner, seeing the appeal in a quick and easy death over the harsh life that awaits them outside; however, Dale refuses to leave without Andrea and tells her that if she stays, so does he. Carol reveals that she has saved [[ChekhovsGun the grenade that Rick took from one of the tankers in Atlanta in the first episode]], and the group uses it to blow out one of the facility's front windows, allowing them to escape and fight their way through the walkers that have amassed outside to get to their vehicles. Andrea and Dale emerge from the building with seconds left to spare, while Jacqui and Jenner watch them on the surveillance feed from inside the control room, exchanging a smile and holding hands as the clock finally reaches zero. As the explosion begins, the survivors form a convoy and quickly flee the site of the destruction.

*HangoverSensitivity: Several of the survivors are shown to be feeling the effects the morning after their festivities, but Glenn is by far the worst and responds by swearing off alcohol for life.
*HesDeadJim: Subverted. Shane assumes that Rick is dead after briefly listening for a heartbeat and being unable to detect one; obviously, he is wrong.
*HopeSpot: It seems that things are looking up for the survivors when Jenner welcomes them into the CDC and greets them with food and hospitality, but then they find out that he's the last man standing and things [[FromBadToWorse get steadily worse from there.]]
*IChooseToStay: Jacqui, Jenner and Andrea before Dale talks her out of it.
*InterruptedSuicide: Andrea.
*KilledOffForReal: Jacqui and Jenner.
*TheLostLenore: Jenner's wife, Test Subject 19.
*MercyKill: Jenner kills Test Subject 19 - later revealed to be his wife - following her reanimation as a walker.
*MauveShirt: Jacqui might have survived until the end of the season, but she still qualifies due to her lack of development and limited screentime.
*NearRapeExperience: A drunken Shane attempts to force himself on Lori, but snaps out of it when she draws blood in her attempts to fight him off.
*RedOniBlueOni: [[CowboyCop Shane]] and [[HotBlooded Daryl]] threaten Jenner with violence to try and force him to open the doors, whil [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure Rick]] and [[TeamMom Lori]] attempt to reason and plead with him instead.
*SanitySlippage: Jenner, thanks to a combination of his wife's death, the loss of his tissue samples and the weeks spent in solitude attempting to find a cure.
*SelfDestructMechanism: The CDC facility is designed to self-destruct in the event of a total power failure to prevent the lethal diseases contained within from escaping.
*ShowerOfAngst: Andrea.
*ShowerOfLove: Rick and Lori.
*SoleSurvivingScientist: Jenner.
*TrashTheSet: The CDC building is completely destroyed.
*UnusualEuphemism: Jenner refers to the scientists who committed suicide as 'opting out'. This term is adopted by the survivor party and used in several subsequent episodes to refer to suicide.
*TheVirus: Confirmed to be the source of the infection by the time-lapse video Jenner plays for the group.
*VomitDiscretionShot: All the wine has something of an adverse effect on Andrea.
*WeHardlyKnewYe: Jacqui and Jenner.
*WellIntentionedExtremist: Jenner genuinely believes that giving the survivors a quick, pain-free death by way of the CDC's self-destruct mechanism is a far kinder alternative to what awaits them on the outside.

'''Season 1, episode 06'''
!TS-19
