* DietEpisode: The subplot involves Mike being put on a diet ... shamed into doing so after he laughs off Alice going on her own strict diet (of celery and carrots) and her ability to resist temptation. Mike has a few sneaky tricks to try to get around this, but Carol and Alice are always a step ahead. [[note]](This subplot provides some insight as to how dieting and fad diets worked in the mid-1970s, with starvation diets (including the "celery and carrots" diet Alice esposes, and the "crackers and cheese" diet Mike is put on) one of those diets. Dieting has progressed a lot since then, to say the least.)[[/note]]

Just then, Jeff shows up at the parlor, his new sweetie in his arms. The two are pawing it up and ramp things up when they see Marcia, specifically to annoy her. The final straw comes when Jeff orders two "Lover's Delight Specials" before they're going to a drive-in movie. Annoyed he's rubbing it in her face, Marcia retaliates by deliberately spraying whip cream on Jeff and his girlfriend. Not surprisingly, they are outraged and leave in a huff.

The next day, Haskell calls a surprise meeting and sits Marcia and Jan down. He explains he's tried taking golf up as a hobby but it hasn't worked out, and besides, he's worked all day, every day at the ice cream parlor for many years. He's used to the grind and used to having just one worker alongside him. He has always appreciated Marcia and her work ethic and ability to get the job done ... but then adds: "I'm afraid Jan's a little bit better."

Postlogue: With four older Brady kids now having had their after-school jobs - whilst Bobby and Cindy were just 12 and 11 at the time, they would, sort of, also get "jobs" in the upcoming series finale, as entrepreneurs, when Bobby attempted to sell hair tonic and Cindy breed rabbits and sell bunnies for profit. Or, without this, in the 1988 reunion TV movie, "A Very Brady Christmas", Bobby said that his first job was at Sam's butcher shop. As for Cindy, it's up to the viewers to imagine if she ever had an after-school job or not.

Greg Brady got his first job in Season 2 as Mike's assistant at the architectural company, and Peter got his last season. Now it was Marcia's turn, so... '''Marcia Gets Creamed'''.

[[Recap/TheBradyBunchS4E19HowToSucceedInBusiness Previously, on The Brady Bunch:]]

Peter had got his first job at the bike shop. However, while he is a good worker, he just isn't that mechanically inclined and slow in getting the job done, leading to his boss, Mr. Martinelli, to fire him.

Greg just pulled into the driveway in Mike's car, and began to polish the hood, when Peter arrives on a bike, gloomy that he failed to get yet another job, when he wants to buy a stereo tape deck with 4 speakers. Just then, Marcia rushes in happily, having just gotten her first job at Mr. Haskell's Ice Cream parlor. While Greg congratulates her, and Bobby and Cindy go out of their way just to polish her shoes, Peter is very unenthused, as he had been looking for a job for a week.

However, being one of the most popular girls at Westdale, and also popular with boys, it now interferes with dating. When her new boyfriend, Jeff, comes over to asks if she's gonna meet him at the tennis courts or he should pick her up, he get annoyed when Marcia informs him about her new job, with him having already reserved the court. However, Marcia suggests that she gets off at six, so Jeff could meet her at Mr. Haskell's then. Except that while Marcia is doing fine at the job, when Jeff comes to pick her up at six, she again has no time, because she has to write a book report.

Marcia then remembers that Peter was looking for a job, and thinking she could free up some time to be with Jeff, she suggests to Mr. Haskell, who works at the parlor the whole day, to have some time off, and he agrees to take afternoons off and find a hobby.

Bad move, Marcia.

When she gets Peter as extra help, he keeps continuously goofing off - taking an ice cream break when he's supposed to wipe the counter; then, when sweeping the floor, not seeing a trash can in sight, he simply sweeps everything under the table, for "no one looks under the tables anyway"; then when he's supposed to help Marcia dust the shelves, he keeps talking on the phone, and when Marcia lets him know she's annoyed with his goofing off, he promises to get on it... just as soon as he finishes one more phone call; and finally, when she sees how lazy and unmotivated Peter is when she gave him a chance - as while she works behind the counter, Peter sits at a table, listening to a game on the radio, she has had enough... and fires him.

Peter, of course, thinking he did nothing wrong, next complains to Bobby in the bathroom, that Marcia fired him for no reason at all, and Bobby seems to agree, to what he remarks that it's just what happens when you give small people power - they can't handle it. Just then, Marcia knocks on the door, asking if he's going to be in there all night, to which Bobby calls him a dictator, before leaving. Marcia is annoyed that Peter, who did ''nothing'' at his job, is now bad-mouthing her to Bobby, as Peter, calling her a "company stooge" and "Captain Bligh Dictator" still thinks Marcia fired him because she was power-hungry. Just then, Carol walks in. Peter tries to tell her Marcia gave him a rotten deal, but Carol questions him that if he actually did what he was supposed to do. Peter claims he did, then Marcia glares at him, and he corrects that "he would have, as soon as he had gotten round to it, sooner or later". Carol then reminds him that he may have taken advantage of Marcia because she was his sister, and asks what he would have done if the situation was reversed. Peter finally understands that he himself was to blame for it, when he goofed off and didn't do his job.

Next, Marcia is talking to Jeff, who could get tickets for a rock concert on Saturday, but she has to work again, and on Sunday, she has homework to do. After consulting with Mr. Haskell, Marcia agrees to get Jan work alongside her, promising Jan would be better. And sure, Jan is taking her work seriously.

Next up, Jeff shows up at the parlor with a new girlfriend of his, and orders two "Lover's Delight Specials", before they're going to a drive-in movie. Annoyed he's rubbing it in her face, Marcia retaliates by deliberatly spraying whip cream on Jeff, and then on his new girl too, and they leave. Marcia decides she's had enough of boys and decides to dedicate herself to her career, as Mr. Haskell had already made her an afternoon manager, and hopes he'd soon make her a full manager and in a distant future, his partner, just as Mr. Haskell walks in. Having taken up golf as a hobby, but having worked all day at the parlor for years, he had a nervous breakdown on the golf course, and decides that the best relaxation for him is to go back to work. Which means he won't need two assistants. But much to Marcia's annoyance, Mr. Haskell chooses Jan instead, for Jan was a harder worker.

However, being one of the most popular girls at Westdale, and also popular with boys, it now interferes with dating. When her new boyfriend, Jeff, comes over to asks if she's gonna meet him at

However, Marcia suggests that she gets off at six, so Jeff could meet her at Mr. Haskell's then. Bad move, Marcia.

When she gets Peter as extra help, he keeps continuously goofing off - taking an ice cream break when he's supposed to wipe the counter; then, when sweeping the floor, not seeing a trash can in sight, he simply sweeps everything under the table, for "no one looks under the tables anyway"; then when he's supposed to help Marcia dust the shelves, he keeps talking on the phone, and when Marcia lets him know she's annoyed with his goofing off, he promises

Just then, Carol walks in. Peter tries to tell her Marcia gave him a rotten deal,
off, but Carol questions him that if he actually did what he was supposed to do.

Next, Marcia is talking to Jeff, who could get tickets for a rock concert on Saturday, but she has to work again, and on Sunday,
she has homework to do. After consulting with Mr. Haskell, do.

Meantime,
Marcia agrees is doing so well at her job that she is quickly promoted to get Jan assistant manager. Realizing that he wants to take an afternoon or two off, and trusting Marcia to oversee younger employees, he asks if she can recommend anybody. She then suggests Peter, who was working so hard to find a job.

And Peter is promptly hired ... and it isn't long before he is promptly fired. It seems like he's the ultimate bad employee, goofing off, doing things in a lackadaisical, haphazard way ... doing anything and everything except doing the job correctly. Peter not only refuses to believe that his own unacceptable
work alongside her, promising performance got him fired, he gets Bobby to sympathize with him.

Marcia, meantime, has no time again for Jeff, who -- thinking she was free for a Saturday night rock concert -- had gone out of his way to procure the tickets. When Marcia tries to explain herself, Jeff has had it and gets a new girlfriend to go to the concert.

In the meantime, Marcia recommends
Jan would be better. And sure, as the newest employee at Haskell's. Haskell is a bit skeptical at first, given how badly Peter worked out, but Jan is taking turns out to be 100 times the employee Peter was. She takes her work seriously.

Next up,
seriously and quickly proves her maturity and worth.

Just then,
Jeff shows up at the parlor with a parlor, his new girlfriend of his, sweetie in his arms. The two are pawing it up and ramp things up when they see Marcia, specifically to annoy her. The final straw comes when Jeff orders two "Lover's Delight Specials", Specials" before they're going to a drive-in movie. Annoyed he's rubbing it in her face, Marcia retaliates by deliberatly deliberately spraying whip cream on Jeff, Jeff and then on his new girl too, and girlfriend. Not surprisingly, they leave. Marcia decides she's had enough of boys are outraged and decides to dedicate herself to her career, as Mr. leave in a huff.

The next day,
Haskell had already made her an afternoon manager, calls a surprise meeting and hopes he'd soon make her a full manager sits Marcia and in a distant future, his partner, just as Mr. Haskell walks in. Having taken up Jan down. He explains he's tried taking golf up as a hobby, hobby but having it hasn't worked out, and besides, he's worked all day, every day at the ice cream parlor for years, he had a nervous breakdown on many years. He's used to the golf course, grind and decides that used to having just one worker alongside him. He has always appreciated Marcia and her work ethic and ability to get the best relaxation for him is to go back to work. Which means he won't need two assistants. But much to Marcia's annoyance, Mr. job done ... but then adds: "I'm afraid Jan's a little bit better."

He's letting Marcia go. Perhaps unstated, perhaps just coincidental although the timing ...
Haskell chooses Jan instead, heard about the fracas Marcia initiated toward Jeff and his girlfriend ... and indeed, it would get anyone fired immediately for Jan was a harder worker.

Later at night,
pulling that stunt.

But no matter what Haskell's reasoning was,
Marcia is mad at Jan for getting her laid off, out of a job, and now is accusing Jan of stealing her of "stealing her job", to which job. The two get into a very heated argument, and Jan even nearly offers to quit just so that Marcia could get her job back, except that then Haskell can rehire Marcia. Just then, Jeff calls her, calls, asking for Marcia. He explaining that what happened at the parlor was just a play, for him to get even with her (and she admits he covered them in whip cream for the same reason) and has made plans for them for every afternoon next week. Just then, Peter walks in, having learned from his errors at goofing off at Mr. Haskell's, and having gotten himself a new job at "The Leaning Tower of Pizza".

* HilarityEnsues: Although as stated in the episode Marcia loses her job through cutbacks and Haskell's preference for Jan and her work skills ... the timing of the job loss does come, maybe coincidentally and maybe not, shortly after her confrontation with Jeff and his new girlfriend that night at the ice cream parlor.

Which means he won't need two assistants. But much to Marcia's surprise, Mr. Haskell chooses Jan instead, for Jan was a harder worker.

Later at night, Marcia is mad at Jan for getting her laid off, to which Jan even offers to quit so that Marcia could get her job back, except that then Jeff calls her, explaining that this show at the parlor was just for him to get even with her (and she admits he covered them in whip cream for the same reason) and has made plans for them, for every afternoon next week, and thus she retires, and lets Jan keep her job. Just then, Peter walks in, having learned from his errors at goofing off at Mr. Haskell's, and having gotten himself a new job at "The Leaning Tower of Pizza".
