A few months before the murder, the hot heated loan shark Furio Tigre is involved with a traffic accident with Viola Cadaverini, granddaughter of the Crime Boss Bruto Cadaverini. Viola's medical bills come to $1,000,000, which Bruto pays in full, with the expectation that Tigre will reimburse him in full for. Fearing for his life, Tigre starts calling in all his debts, including one Glen Elg. Glen, a programmer by trade, has a bit of a gambling problem, building substantial debts with Tigre. Although he originally borrowed $50,000, Tigre's interest policies have doubled this. Unable to pay this back, he considers handing Tigre a powerful computer virus as collateral, which Tigre could sell on the black market for several million dollars.

Dahlia and Phoenix date for eight months, with Dahlia's real motive being to retrieve the amulet and dispose of it properly, but Phoenix cherishes it as a gift and won't give it back. Eventually she resolves to kill him and take it back. She breaks into the pharmacology department and takes more poison, planning to spike Phoenix's cold medication with it. Noticing the break in and what was taken, Doug Swallow realises that Dahlia is bad news and attempts to warn Phoenix, but he is blinded by love and doesn't listen, shoving Doug back in a rage, knocking into a pole containing the pharmacology department's non-standard voltage electricity, and one of the cables break.

Phoenix storms off from the scene, unaware that Dahlia has witnessed the argument. Realising Doug could implicate her, she kills him by electrocuting him with the broken cable. For good measure she places Phoenix's cold medicine in Doug's hands to implicate him. Worried he might have hurt Doug, Phoenix returns to the scene and sees Dahlia cradling over Doug's body. She begs him not to say anything about her presence, and he agrees. He is shortly arrested.

Luke Atmey hatches a plan to improve his reputation. He sends Ron an anonymous blackmail letter, telling him to carry out a detailed heist as [=Mask=]☆[=DeMasque=] or have his identity revealed. Ron does the deed, and Atmey is hired again to investigate, failing to find any clues leading to [=DeMasque's=] identity. Ron is instructed to leave the treasure he stole in a bank safe. The next day, Ron returns to find the amount of money the treasure was worth in the safe.This is repeated multiple times over until eventually, Atmey pretends to 'retrieve' one of the stolen treasures and is praised.
Eventually, Atmey receives a blackmail letter from CEO of KB security, demanding money that night in exchange for his silence. He had been gathering info on Mask [=DeMasque=], and knows Atmey has been orchestrating the crimes!
In desperation, Atmey thinks up a new plan. He re-sends his own blackmail letter to Ron, pretending it's for him. Atmey steals the latest treasure to catch his eye, Kurain's sacred urn, by himself. That night, he goes to KB Security and kills the CEO. Ron heads to the location specified in the letter, KB Security itself. He is knocked out by Atmey, who presses an emergency buzzer and leaves. The guard, Larry Butz, isn't in the building and doesn't respond. Ron wakes up, panics and tries to hide the dead body beside him in a safe. He then leaves too,

They meet at the Tres Bien restaurant owned by Jean Armstrong, who is also in debt with Tigre. However before Glen and Tigre can reach an agreement, a miracle happens: Glen wins $500,000 on the lottery, and thus can pay Tigre in full. However Tigre is far more interested in the computer virus, his own time to pay Bruto running short. In desperation he spikes Glen's coffee with Cyanide. Glen collapses, and the shock of this causes the waitress, Maggey Byrde, to faint.

Five years earlier, the 14 year old Dahlia Hawthorne conspired with her half-sister Valerie and tutor-turned-boyfriend Terry Fawles to get rich: Terry would "kidnap" Dahlia and hold her to ransom, a ransom Valerie would deliver, where in reality all three would split the ransom with each other. The ransom is a two million dollar diamond, as Dahlia's father is in the jewel business.

The "exchange" is to take place at Dusky Bridge. However Valerie betrays them, shooting Terry and tries to take the diamond for herself. Dahlia jumps off the bridge into the deadly waters of the Eagle River. However she survives, with the diamond safe in her backpack, and Valerie helps her go into hiding, giving false testimony that Terry killed Dahlia. Terry is convicted of the crime, and sentenced to death.

Five years pass. Dahlia eventually emerges as "Melissa Foster", and enrols at Ivy University. While being transferred to another prison, the van Terry is in crashes near Dusky bridge, giving him a chance to escape. He contacts Valerie and asks them to meet, wanting to know why she betrayed him. Before he meets with her he visits a nearby temple to retrieve a keepsake Dahlia gave him. They had made a pact that if they couldn't trust each other, they would take their own lives, a pact she had no intention of fulfilling.

Valerie has felt guilty about her role in the crime, and told Dahlia she planned to tell Terry the truth. In response, Dahlia follows Valerie to Dusky bridge and stabs her. She hides Valerie's body in Terry's stolen car and meets with Terry as Valerie, as Terry cannot remember what Valerie looks like. Terry is later recaptured with Valerie's body in the car, and a rookie attorney called Mia Fey takes up his defence...

Morgan Fey's first husband was a wealthy jeweller, who married her when they thought she would become the Master of the Kurain Channelling School and thus gain a lot of political influence. However that title would eventually go to her younger sister Misty. In the meantime Morgan would have twin girls, Dahlia and Iris, neither of which had as much talent as their aunt. After the DL-6 incident brought the Fey Clan into disrepute, Mr Hawthorne left Morgan and took the children, Dahlia eventually convincing him to leave Iris at Hazakura Temple, a branch Temple of Kurain, where she was raised as a Shrine Maiden. Morgan's second marriage gave her another daughter called Pearl, who unlike Dahlia and Iris was a channelling prodigy, a worthy Master should Misty's family be extinguished. It became a strong desire of Morgan's that her own bloodline become the Master line.

After the botched kidnapping attempt and Terry Fawles' second trial ending with his suicide, Mia Fey and Diego Armando begin investigating Dahlia to try and tie her into these crimes. Sensing they're getting close, Dahlia poisons Diego, who falls into a coma. Dahlia plants the evidence of the poisoning on Phoenix Wright. Knowing her attempts to retrieve the evidence would led to more death, Iris convinces her to let her stand in for her when dating Phoenix. Although her motive is to persuade him to hand back the pendant, she eventually falls in love with him. Dahlia's patience runs out, and her attempt to get the pendent herself culminates in framing him for yet another murder, although this time she is uncovered by Mia, against whom she swears vengeance. Dahlia was found guilty of murdering Doug Swallow and sentenced to death.

However Dahlia would never have a chance to exact her revenge: Mia would later be murdered, leaving her younger sister Maya as heir to the title of Master. Meanwhile Diego is in a coma for years, the poison destroying his eyesight and bleaching his hair. One day he suddenly awakes, stimulated by the smell of a doctor's coffee. Discovering Mia's death, he directs his own self loathing at being unable to save her against her law partner, Phoenix Wright, and joins the prosecutor's office under the name of Godot. He now has to wear a cybernetic mask to see anything, although one flaw of this technology is that he cannot distinguish red on a white backgorund.

However Armando, now Godot, has been using his powers as a prosecutor to monitor anyone who may try to hurt Maya, as the last living link to Mia, and discovers the plan and reads Pearl's message. He concocts a plan to thwart them: Enlisting Iris and Misty Fey, they first attempt to dissuade Pearl from doing what her mother asks. However Pearl, who doesn't comprehend her mother's goals, thinks she is helping the Fey Clan and resolves to follow her mother's instructions. This leaves the team with one recourse: The only way to stop a spirit being channeled is to channel it yourself, and this is what Misty Fey does.

Meanwhile Godot takes Misty's body to Dusky bridge, which is on fire due to a stray lightning strike. He swings the body with a rope over to Iris, who takes the body to the temple and hides the murder wound by stabbing her with a ceremonial sword. Thus Iris' role in Godot's backup plan is fulfilled: To take the blame for the murder. However it's not Phoenix Wright who defends her at first, having been hospitalized and reading up on the background of all this, but a dapper young man who usually works on the other side of the courtroom...

The next day, Luke Atmey fabricates evidence to make it look like the urn was stolen the night of the murder. He plans to implicate himself as DeMasque, giving him an alibi so he won't be suspected for the murder. Ron, overwhelmed with guilt, turns himself in instead.

Ron Delite, a guard working at KB security, is desperate for money. His wife, Desiree, is an avid shopaholic and her habits are too expensive to keep up with. He resorts to stealing and selling off data from KB security, but it isn't enough. He decides to take up the persona of Mask DeMasque and steals a treasure he was assigned to guard. He hides his extravagant costume in a trash can. However, ace detective Luke Atmey investigates the scene and finds the costume, realising that Ron is Mask DeMasque. Meanwhile, Ron is fired from KB security after his data selling scheme is uncovered.
