Dr Maxwell is in the sleeping car of a train, travelling across France for a job interview with the World Health Organization. He tries to settle down to sleep but is interrupted by Jorg; a drunk, flatulent German passenger. Kath and Les, an English couple travelling for their daughter's wedding, arrive and are annoyed that Jorg is in Les's assigned bed. Maxwell translates and they manage to get Jorg to move. Some time later, backpackers Hugo and Shona arrive; waking everyone else by talking loudly. They begin making out on one of the empty bunk beds, and a man's corpse falls down from the top bed above.

Maxwell confirms the man is dead, and the passengers discuss what to do. Maxwell leaves to look for a guard but returns having failed to find one. The others prepare to pull the emergency alarm, but Hugo stops them; he has snuck on board the train without a ticket and doesn't want to get caught. He points out that if the train is forced to stop, they will all miss their appointments the next day. Les agrees that he doesn't want to miss the wedding, and Maxwell is concerned about his interview. Kath and Shona respectively argue with Les and Hugo, but reluctantly agree to do nothing about the body. Maxwell translates for Jorg and gives him medicine for his constipation. After Shona gives a speech for the dead man, everyone goes back to bed. Hugo has no choice but to sleep next to the corpse, since Shona won't let him in her bed.

In the morning, Les finds Kath missing and is worried. The train brakes suddenly, throwing Hugo and the corpse out onto the floor; and everyone awakes. Maxwell suspects that Kath has either stopped the train, or thrown herself in front of it, and Les begins to worry but is interrupted as Jorg suffers explosive diarrhea. Les is forced to help him use Kath's shoebox. Shona sees that the train has hit a deer, just as Kath returns safely. Later, she and Les leave for the wedding; Kath feels bad about the dead man and says that she wants to attend his funeral. Shona and Hugo also leave together to go travelling.

With Jorg in the shower, Maxwell is left alone with the dead man. He takes a call from the driver waiting to take Maxwell and "Dr Meyer" to the interview. Maxwell apologizes to the corpse and says there could "only be one candidate" for the job. A smartly-dressed Jorg arrives, explaining that he is Dr Meyer and has an important interview today. Upon recognizing Maxwell as his rival, he wishes Maxwell good luck and leaves. Maxwell stares at the corpse in silence.
