* CourtMartialed: The first scene after the opening is Kira undergoing this for his unauthorized release of Lacus. This is probably the best display of the contrasting natures of the Archangel's senior officer trio. Although Murrue initially lays out that Kira's sentence would be execution, she assures the naturally-shocked boy that it would only apply if he was actually a soldier, which (for now) he isn't, and simply lets him off with a warning to consider his actions in the future.

Added DiffLines:

* GoodCopBadCop: Mu and Murrue vs Natarle, but Mu is the more direct Good Cop here, acting as Kira's defense. He vouches for the kid's good intentions and how dirty their own actions were by trying to hold Lacus hostage. Natarle, meanwhile, coldly stonewalls him by citing code that did permit her to do so, which he's not too familiar with. After the trial, Mu is jokingly casual, as usual, while Natarle is irked that protocol wasn't upheld. Murrue initially presents herself as neutral, then seemingly takes Natarle's side, but then presents that she's just as much of a Good Cop as Mu, letting Kira go with nothing more than a stern but understanding warning.

* EntertaininglyWrong: Everything Athrun says about Kira's position. What cements it as this is he easily dismisses Lacus' word that Kira is telling the truth about his friends, only imposing his own notions that Kira's "being manipulated". He has no reason to believe that Lacus is lying or also fooled. There's not taking Lacus' apparent personality seriously, and then there's this.

What cements it as this is he easily dismisses Lacus' word that Kira is telling the truth about his friends, only imposing his own notions that Kira's just "being manipulated". He has no reason to believe that Lacus is lying or also fooled. There's not taking Lacus' apparent personality seriously, fooled, and then there's this.doesn't once consider that, as a resident of Heliopolis, Kira actually has friends among the civilians aboard the only ship that escaped the colony. It shows how Athrun's too indoctrinated and affected by his own grief of his mother's loss to consider anything else.

* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: As the first episode to feature SEED mode, there are some strange design elements that are not retained in future episodes. Namely, instead of simply being drawn without the normal light reflection and smaller pupils, the eyes are also colored gray instead of retaining their regular color. The pupils in the establishing shot are also drawn much smaller than how they would later on, and the shading is also very different as well. There are only three shots in the episode that specifically show his eyes, though, so it just seems they were experimenting with the right kind look.

Dull Eyes Of Unhappiness requires unhappiness. Try its super-trope.

While Kira and Mu continue to fight Yzak and Dearka, the Gamow fires at the Archangel. While some shots are dissipated by the Archangel[='s=] anti-beam depth charges, it's hit several times. Though its laminated armor system protects it, the armor can't shed heat fast enough to keep up with the bombardment. The Blitz avoids the Archangel[='s=] defensive fire and lands on the ship itself, firing point blank into the hull. None of the ship's weapons can hit it that close to the ship, so Miri calls Kira for backup. Hearing Miri's call for help, Kira thinks of Flay promising the little girl that he would protect all of them. We see an image of a purple seed floating against a background of multicolored light, before the seed itself explodes in a burst of light. Kira, his eyes now drawn distinctively in a "flat" style without their normal "light" similar to DullEyesOfUnhappiness, says that he won't allow them to sink the Archangel.

!!Tropes used in this episode:

* BotheringByTheBook: Murrue's interpretation of military law giving her no authority to punish Kira definitely counts.
* CurbStompBattle: Once Kira
* RaceAgainstTheClock: The Gamows attack on the Archangel is presented this way, but things go south for them before the time limit becomes a factor.
* SuperMode: Kira becomes way more powerful after going "SEED mode".
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Lacus says this about Athrun.

Yzak attacks, but Kira counters instantly, damaging the Duel with his beam saber before immediately heading for the Archangel. Yzak fires at the retreating Strike, but Kira dodges easily. Attacking the Blitz, Kira literally kicks it out of the way, knocking it away from the Arachangel but losing his beam saber in the process. Yzak tries to counterattack, but Kira draws one of the Strike's combat knives and effortlessly stabs it into the Duel's already damaged armor. The Blitz pulls the Duel away as Nichol contacts Dearka, telling them they have to retreat. The Duel's cockpit is filled with smoke and blaring alarms, Yzak screaming that it hurts as he covers his face with one hand, blood visible inside his helmet's cracked visor.
