Overlong plot summary replaced with concise version, as per mod decision.

At an orthodontist office in Kansas City, Missouri, Malvo finishes up with a patient and sends him on his way. He and his fiancé attend a house party later that night, where his coworker, Burt, shares with him that his brother is witness protection from some mafia men in Chicago. Burt invites him to meet his brother in Las Vegas the following week, which Malvo accepts.

Malvo recounts one of his orthodontics stories at their fancy Vegas hotel, only to be interrupted by Lester Nygaard. Lester begins bragging about his success as Salesman of the Year, and Malvo tries to discretely tell him to walk away as they prepare to leave. As the group boards the elevator, Lester hops on at the last minute and continues pestering him.

-->'''Malvo:''' Lester, is this what you want? Yes or no?
-->'''Lester:''' Yes.

Not taking his eyes off of Lester, Malvo pulls out a silencer and executes Burt, his wife, and his own fiancé. He then shares with Lester how he’d tried getting close to Burt for six months only to throw it all away just then. The elevator opens in an abandoned part of the hotel, and Lester smacks Malvo on the back of the head with his award, fleeing out the door.

Linda is awoken by her husband, who’s frantically packing up their things so they can leave the building. They board the elevator, which is noticeably clean of any bloodstains. Pepper and Budge, meanwhile, lay on the floor of the file room talking about the titular fox, rabbit, and cabbage riddle. They’re interrupted when their boss comes in asking about the Fargo crime syndicate shootings, and they learn that Deputy Molly Solverson of Bemidji Police has been making calls concerning the incident.

At Lou’s Diner, Molly gets a call after breakfast from someone inquiring about a witness to an elevator shooting in Las Vegas. Lester drives home and tells Linda to pack for a spontaneous trip to Acapulco to make up for having to leave Vegas so early. Molly arrives at his door to inquire about the murders, and Linda welcomes her in.

Malvo arrives at Lester’s old house in the suburbs, where a new family now resides. They point out that Lester now has his own shop in town, and Malvo sets out. Molly sits down to interview Lester about the incident, and when she gets back to the car, she’s informed that two men from the FBI showed up at the office looking for her and were steered to Lou’s Diner, where she was presumed to be.

Malvo shows up at Lou’s and asks for a cup of coffee and a piece of apple pie. He tries making small talk with Lou and asks if he knows where to find Lester Nygaard. Lou doesn’t tell him any address, so Malvo comments on the picture of Gus and Molly on the wall and says that nobody ever hangs up the bad pictures. He once again inquires about the location of Lester, but Lou instead shares with him the vague details of a case he had back in 1979. He offers to give his number to Lester the next time Lester stops by, but Malvo insists that he’s just passing through and rises to leave.

-->'''Malvo:''' Thanks for the pie and the coffee. [[DevilInDisguise Haven’t had a piece of pie like that since the Garden of Eden]].

Molly enters as soon as he’s out the door. Budge and Peppers walk in as well and inform her of their personal connection to the massacre. Realizing they’re invested, she takes them to the station to look at the map she’s made connecting each variable of the case. Bill walks in and begins berating Molly for wasting their time, but the agents instead compliment her on her hard work and make arrangements to stay the night.

That night, Gus looks over Molly’s StringTheory board at their house and thinks back to the man he saw pass his mail truck who looked exactly like Malvo. They park across the street and Lester convinces his wife to go into the shop and pick up his things for him, dawning her in his signature puffy orange jacket. He watches as she walks inside and is immediately executed by Malvo. Realizing he’s shot the wrong person, Malvo goes outside and walks off as Lester watches.
