At
the wrong part hospital, Grimly agonizes over accidentally shooting Molly and destroying her spleen, but the injury is not fatal. The unloaded gun Lester placed in Gordo's backpack is discovered at his school. The Nygaard home is searched by police and the incriminating evidence that Lester planted in Chazz's gun safe is found. Later, Lester tells Chief Oswalt a new story in which he claims Chazz killed Pearl during a heated lovers' quarrel. Lester also claims he was present when Chazz killed Chief Thurman, thus explaining his hand injury. He says he covered for his hot-headed brother because he feared retaliation. Lester is released from jail while Chazz is incarcerated. Molly talks to Mr. Wrench, who is hospitalized under guard, and informs him that his partner, Mr. Numbers, is dead. Wrench, who is deaf, declines to provide any information.

Meanwhile, Lorne Malvo infiltrates the Fargo, North Dakota offices
of the sentence crime syndicate who sent Numbers and Wrench, and armed with the UMP-45 automatic rifle that was used in his murder attempt, Malvo massacres the gang and its boss.

Lester seduces the money hungry Mrs. Hess with promises of "greasing the palms" of the insurance agents responsible for her late husband's policy. Lester fails
to be focusing on.mention that Hess had stopped paying the premiums and the policy was cancelled. Molly is discharged from the hospital and returns to Bemidji. She is dismayed to hear that Chazz Nygaard has been arrested and that Lester has been "cleared."

Gus sits in the waiting room while Chazz and Kitty send Gordo off to school in the morning. During lunch, a couple of kids knock his backpack over and a handgun skids out of it across the floor. Later that day, Bill and the Bemidji officers knock on Kitty’s door and enter the house with a search warrant. Chazz gets a call at work and returns home while they break open his gun cabinet and find his hidden M249 machine gun, along with a hammer and pictures of Pearl Nygaard. He’s taken away as Kitty screams at him for supposedly being unfaithful.

Bill, meanwhile, meets with Lester and asks him if his wife was having an affair with his brother. Lester recites a story in which he walks in on Chazz and Pearl having an argument that turns bloody in his basement, followed by his brother threatening him and taking Chief Thurman out with the shotgun himself. Bill falls for the whole thing, and Chazz yells at his brother from the cell as Bill leads him back into the police station.

Gus and Greta are visiting Molly in the hospital when she awakes. Gus admits to accidentally shooting her in the blizzard and tells her that her spleen had to be removed. She’s not the least bit angry with him, and he leaves the room when Lou arrives to tell his daughter of how proud he is of her.

In Reno, Nevada, Mr. Rundle returns to his office to find Malvo waiting for him. Malvo asks if he gave away information about where to find him to anyone based in Fargo. Rundle denies giving out any information, but Malvo threatens him when he doesn’t tell him who to contact from Fargo. He walks out of the building to the sound of a woman screaming at seeing whatever mess he left behind in Rundle’s office.

Back in Duluth, Molly meets with Mr. Wrench and informs him that his partner is dead. She asks if Lester told him where to find Lorne Malvo, but he doesn’t give her any information, so she leaves as he silently mourns. Chazz, meanwhile, is being moved to county jail to await trial. Lester returns to work where his boss tells him that Gina Hess’ insurance claims were denied due to her husband deciding to stop paying the premium while he was alive. He decides to go to her house and break the news himself.

Gus visits Molly in the hospital, where he finds that she’s begun connecting variables of the case a la StringTheory. She correctly theorizes that Wrench and Numbers were members of the same crime syndicate as Hess, and Lou arrives to take her home.

In Fargo, North Dakota, FBI agents Webb Pepper and Phil Budge watch from across the street as the alleged higher-ups at the Fargo crime syndicate make their way from a Chinese restaurant back to their office building. Locked in conversation, the two completely fail to notice Malvo walk in through the front door with a loaded machine gun and annihilate everyone inside, only realizing that they missed something important when a body flies out one of the top floors and onto the sidewalk.

Back in Duluth, Lester arrives at Gina’s house and asks for a drink. He convinces her that he can speed up the process that will get her the insurance money she’s been asking for, and she responds by [[CoitusEnsues taking him into her bedroom]]. Lou, meanwhile, drives Molly to the police station at her request before taking her home. There, Molly learns that Chazz Nygaard has been arrested for the murder of Pearl and Thurman.
