* There's no source material In the lead up to the film's release, Kathleen Kennedy gave an interview to Rolling Stone about the writing process for Episode 9 and mentioned the challenges of writing original material as Star Wars isn't based on books or comics. This comment was immediately jumped on by a number of fans, who pointed out that the Star Wars franchise actually has hundreds of books, comics and video games to draw ideas from; it's common for people to post the comments alongside pictures of Legends works. It's also pointed out that George Lucas wrote outlines for the Sequel Trilogy's plot for the filmmakers to use.

* Kylo getting thrown off a cliff to musicBefore the end battle Kylo gets pushed off a cliff by Palpatine and a breaking sound is heard. A lot of Kylo fangirls became outraged of how violent it was and claimed that such gruesome things shouldn't happen in Star Wars as it's a kids' film. Those reactions were mocked by many who pointed out that previous films had people getting their limbs cut off and Film/RevengeOfTheSith has a very graphic scene of Anakin burning alive. So many started making fun of how tame it was by putting music over it.

* "Taking one last look, sir...at my friends" labelnote/Explanation A line spoken by C-3PO to Rey, Finn and Poe that was prominent in some trailers. While some people found it genuinely moving, others felt that it foreshadowed Threepio having a NearDeathExperience so heavy-handedly that there was no way they'd actually go through with it. Other people snarked about Threepio saying this to these particular characters, because the only one Threepio's ever really seen interacting with onscreen prior to this film is Poe, so the friendship line comes off as an InformedAttribute. ** He'd better be saying this to Chewie and R2! Joking (sometimes semi-seriously) that C-3PO is actually addressing Chewie and R2-D2, who are either off to the side or not present due to manipulative editing, as they're his actual friends whom he's known for decades. While many of these ended up being true, one particularly absurd one claimed that a giant space turtle would appear and eat the star destroyer that General Hux is on. Naturally, this became the target of mockery among fans and meme communities, with it becoming the stock fake spoiler, and with many images spawning of things such as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles getting ready to eat a pizza labelled "General Hux in the third act". Some also drew comparisons to Stephen King's "It" due to the shared presence of such space animals. Many even went so far as to say that the entire rest of the movie would be vindicated if they just got to see such a scene.
** Creator/MattSmith. Early in 2019, it was announced that Matt Smith would play a character in the film, which received a rather excited but normal reaction from the community. Over the next few months, however, all mention of Matt Smith was removed from promotional materials and Disney denied his involvement, although some websites still included him. Fuel was added to the fire when a set of fake leaks alleged that Matt Smith would play a young Palpatine in the movie, and this just got bigger after the Celebration trailer revealed that Palpatine would indeed appear. Shortly after, a set of ultimately fake leaks that came from some reliable sources (some of which were involved in leaking the actual plot a few months later) alleged that Matt Smith would play a Sith acolyte separate from the Knights of Ren who would be a follower of Palpatine's wraith, with the movie's final battle being the Palpatine wraith possessing Matt's character and duking it out with Rey and Ben. Ultimately, none of this came to pass and Matt Smith was not in the movie, but this hasn't stopped the community from jokingly proclaiming every newly-revealed character as being the one played by Matt Smith. Some have theorized that Matt Smith was originally intended to play the rejuvenated Palpatine before this was changed to Palpatine simply reverting to his ROTJ-era appearance.
** "Never to be seen again / [=N2BSA=] / The Yeetening." The plot of what might have been an earlier draft of the movie (mostly similar to the final, but with some added elements such as Jannah being Lando's long-lost daughter) leaked on Reddit near the end of summer 2019. One of the most shocking revelations in it, aside from Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter, was that right before the final battle, Palpatine would shoot (or "yeet") Ben into a pit to an UncertainDoom, with the leak specifically using the pointed phrase "Never to be seen again." This idea was negatively received by the community, and the leakers' sheer insistence on the fact led to the phrase becoming an ironic meme. Ben's true fate of crawling out of the pit and sacrificing himself to heal Rey was only leaked about a week before the movie released, giving the meme plenty of time to become extremely ingrained within the community despite the film ultimately showing a different result. Ben's actual fate is widely considered to be better than the original leak's, although not by much.
** "No, I do." The initial leak also stated that the movie would end with Rey going to Tatooine to bury the lightsabers, with a person asking her who she was, with Rey responding "I'm Rey Skywalker". This did ultimately happen in the movie (with an old woman being the person in question) but shortly after the original leak, a Website/FourChan post claimed that the after Rey said her line, the person in question would reveal themselves to be Ben Solo, having survived falling into the pit on Exogol. Ben would wish her luck, and Rey would respond by thanking him and wishing him to find what he seeks. Ben would respond with the bizarre line "No, I do", and then both would go on their merry way. The nonsensical and awkward nature of this fake leak led to "No, I do" becoming a popular meme within the community, with it basically serving as a random reply to ever conceivable type of post. ** Burger King. About a week prior to the release of the movie, a very daring and trollish marketing campaign started among German Burger Kings, referred to as the "Spoiler Whopper". The campaign was that by installing the special "Spoiler Whopper" app and telling it a spoiler for The Rise of Skywalker at a German Burger King, the customer would receive free food. The problem? All the spoilers were directly sourced from the [=StarWarsLeaks=] subreddit, and as stated earlier, every single one of them turned out to be true! Despite this, the community, which had been despairing over the leaks being increasingly confirmed by the trailers, immediately seized upon the campaign and proclaimed that such a thing could not have been done without Disney's approval and that all the previous leaks were a trap laid directly by Disney, and thus fake. With the leaks eventually being confirmed by the movie, this incident has been proclaimed the most bizarre period for the whole leaks community, and Burger King-related memes have become a common in-joke within it.

Followed by the appearance of Luke and Leia's Force ghosts, she declares herself to be a Skywalker. As a result of the appropriation of the name when Rey's relationship with Luke of all people was tumultuous in comparison to that of her relationship with both Han and Leia, it has led to memes about characters being asked who they were, then looking to the side where the Skywalker ghosts are and answering with "Skywalker".
