* NightAndDayDuo: Chikane is associated with the Moon, Himeko with the Sun. The symbolism is further explored when Himeko, who believes herself to be an utterly ordinary girl, [[ICantBelieveAGuyLikeYouWouldNoticeMe wonders what the star student and school idol Chikane sees in her]]. Chikane then proceeds that, just like the Moon only shines with the reflected light of the Sun, so is Chikane inspired and motivated to "shine" in all things by her [[GirlsLove relationship]] with Himeko.

* BoobsOfSteel:
** One of the reasons why Chikane can [[spoiler:thrash Souma easily and steal his mecha, then takes it to the enemy base then slaughters the Orochi necks on foot.]] "Lunar Boobs" ''indeed''.
** Also applies to Sister Miyako, to a lesser extent. [[spoiler:She's the last of the Orochi Necks to fall against Chikane while the rest of the ladies were already petrified off-screen.]]
** [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by one of the Orochi whilst getting his ass kicked-"THIS IS WHY I HATE GIRLS WITH LARGE BREASTS." And furthermore, as a {{Foreshadowing}}, one of the first scenes of [[spoiler:Chikane amongst the Orochi Necks is about zooming her breasts, while comparing with [[ACupAngst the medium-sized Corona.]] She fell in a short order.]]

* KickTheSonOfABitch: An oddly recursive example. [[spoiler: When she joins the Orochi, Girochi reaffirms what a {{Jerkass}} he is by harassing Chikane, wrapping her up in chains, and calling her a pervert. But since this was right after she raped Himeko, well, dude had a point. And then not long after, Chikane completely annihilated him, as well as the rest of the Orochi, to prove just how powerful and evil she had become post FaceHeelTurn. But since they were the priests of the BigBad, who had previously attacked the heroes, manipulated Chikane, and destroyed the town (not to mention that the aforementioned Girochi's reasoning for calling Chikane a pervert was because he himself lusts after Himeko and wants her all for himself, so he's probably also no better), they're far from blameless either.]]

* MixAndMatch: GirlsLove + HumongousMecha.

Though ''Destiny of the Shrine Maiden'' attempts to fool viewers into believing that it could be a schoolyard drama (which it is, to an extent), and then a mecha action show, the truth is that it is, essentially, a love story. (Actually, a rather simple LoveTriangle, wherein Himeko has some feelings for both Chikane and Souma Oogami, but initially believes that those two are a couple, while both of them hold romantic feelings for Himeko). The strange blend of seriousness and humor in the series makes for a very love-it-or-hate-it reaction from viewers.
