* This theme comes up in the story of King Sombra in both ''ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFiendshipIsMagic'' and ''ComicBook/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicIDW''. As a child, Sombra saw a vision that he and his best friend Radiant Hope would grow up to be respectively a terrible monster and a beautiful alicorn princess. He did his best to defy this, assured by Princess Amore that his destiny was not set in stone, but soon after learned that he was a HumanoidAbomination created to free an AncientEvil, and that Amore had known all along but done nothing to help him. Deciding ThenLetMeBeEvil, he embraces his role completely, though it brings him little joy. Then, in the ''Siege of the Crystal Empire'', he reunites with Radiant Hope who reveals that she ''didn't'' become an alicorn; She could have, but she chose to abandon that fate for the sake of reuniting with Sombra. [[spoiler:Inspired by her example, Sombra ultimately makes the same choice to defy the path that had been laid out before him, nearly at the cost of his own life]].

'''Radiant:''' Sombra, you're a fool. You didn't rob me of anything. I chose. I had a choice between my destiny and you. I chose you. No more talk about destiny, Sombra. I never believed in it. You're the only thing I ever believed in.

* In ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'', it's generally understood that Cutiemarks (which shows a pony's special talent and/or destiny) show up when they show up, usually without the pony even realizing, and forcing the issue is a bad idea. Rainbow Dash, on the other hand, espouses the opposite view, and encourages the Cutie Mark Crusaders to chase after their marks however much they want. For what it's worth, Rainbow does draw on experience when she says this; While her friends got their marks due to outside circumstances leading them to their destinies, ''her'' mark appeared when she pushed herself beyond her limits and accomplished something no one had ever done before or since, and caused the events that led to her friends getting their marks in the process.

This essentially averts the future that would have resulted if Morgana had remained Camelot's enemy, although other parties such as Mordred are dissatisfied at the new turn of events as they still desired to fulfil their original role in the prophecies of the future.

During the ending of Makai Kingdom, Trenia confesses that she resented Zetta for his selfish pursuit of power and wanted to see what would happen if he lost it all. She could have deleted Pram's false prophecy any time she wanted, and left it in solely as part of her plan.

* Subverted in ''VideoGame/MakaiKingdom''. Badass freakin' overlord Zetta gets a prophecy from an oracle that says that his netherworld will be destroyed. In an attempt to Screw it, Zetta tracks down and consults the Sacred Tome, a CosmicKeystone that contains the record of the Netherworld's reality, including (presumably) what would destroy it. When he discovers that the final page contains the sentence "Lord Zetta is stupid. His stupidity has doomed the netherworld to extinction", he burns the book in a fit of rage, [[SelfFulfillingProphecy consequently un-recording his own netherworld and proving the prophecy right]]. Further subverted when it's revealed that [[spoiler:the prophecy itself was a lie that Pram wrote in the Tome]].

* ''Franchise/TheMatrix'' Trilogy:

When Neo says "screw destiny!" and charges in to rescue him, he realizes that he is The One after all. ** This is the primary motivation of Medivh. Forced into becoming the Guardian of Tirisfal by the machinations of his mother, his resentment and desire to break free of his fate was used to turn him evil and bring the Horde into Azeroth. Later, freed of evil taint, he would assume the role of a prophet and maneuver the humans, orcs, and night elves into a position to combat the Burning Legion and prevent their conquering of Azeroth. Medivh further screwed with Destiny by giving his own son, Med'an, what he never had: the ''choice'' to become Guardian of Tirisfal.
