* ''Franchise/WonderWoman'': Despite being an god, Ares in Greek Mythology had a tendency of getting jobbed and defeated by mortals on regular basis, was something of a spoiled crybaby manchild and regarded as a DumbMuscle. This was because he was the embodiment of bloodthirsty and violent war, and the Ancient Greeks generally preferred Athena who represented strategic aspect of war. In the DC comics, he is not only smarter and more dangerous, but also a [[HijackedByJesus figure analoguous with the Devil]] who [[GodsNeedPrayerBadly derived his power from human conflict]] and came very close of becoming all-powerful in his introductory arc when he nearly triggered World War III, but he stepped away when he realized that if mankind was destroyed, nobody would be left to fight wars and he'd cause his own undoing. He instead focused on plotting minor conflicts to keep his power sustained and would later go on and overthrow ''Hades'' and become God of the Underworld too.

** Byrna "Blue Snowman" Brilyant has never posed a huge physical threat as she's a mad scientist fighting the Amazon champion, and originally used her artificial snow to hold a farming community's fields for ransom. As of [[ComicBook/WonderWomanRebirth DC Rebirth]] she is far more dangerous and given a mecha to pilot rather than a small powered suit, though Wondy still doesn't have too hard a time taking her down Byrna is a much more deadly threat to civilians and non-powered opponents.

Added DiffLines:

* ''Literature/QuantumDevilSagaAvatarTuner'' makes a number of people far more badass than they were in ''VideoGame/DigitalDevilSaga'':
** In the game Cielo was either TheLoad or the LethalJokeCharacter, depending on how you played him. In the novels he is TheBigGuy, as powerful as everyone else in combat in both physical and magic terms, with his only drawback being that as a flying demon he cannot fight all that well indoors. in fact, at the very end [[spoiler:it is him who manages to break out of Sera's control instead of Heat]].
** Jinana/Ushas originally merely had a few physical attacks and a LightEmUp SignatureMove that she needed help to execute. Here, she has PrehensileHair and can create several different types of unblockable FrickinLaserBeams and an actual LaserBlade.
** The random encounter Atavaka is a unique High Atma depicted as powerful as some of the bosses.
** Harley Q was a pathetic WarmUpBoss. Now, he is a NighInvulnerable BlobMonster that takes the heroes' combined efforts to take down. After that not only is he still alive, but he [[spoiler:eventually turns into an EldritchAbomination that devours [[KillEmAll everyone]] and everything in the Junkyard]].

Added DiffLines:

* This is widespread throughout the ''Nyctophobia'' books, but the most obvious case is [[Franchise/ThePhantomOfTheOpera Erik Garnier]]. In [[Literature/ThePhantomOfTheOpera Leroux's original work]], the Phantom/Erik is just a deformed man haunting a concert hall. In the series, he is ''[[HalfHumanHybrid half-demon]]'', more accurately half-incubus, and his iconically beautiful voice can either be [[CharmPerson compelling]] or it can [[MakeMeWannaShout shatter glass]].

* Website/CollegeHumor's ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yD3uNleWVU Dora the Explorer and the Destiny Medallion]]'' is a three part parody miniseries which re-imagines ''WesternAnimation/DoraTheExplorer'' as a straight action movie.

Added DiffLines:

* ''WebAnimation/DeadFantasy'':
** [[VideoGame/DeadOrAlive Hitomi]] has SuperStrength on par with [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Tifa Lockhart]]. In her home series, she's a BadassNormal.
** [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII Rinoa Heartilly]] is pretty much a PhysicalGod here.
** [[Franchise/KingdomHearts Kairi]] has all of Sora's Keyblade skills and magic, while in her home series, she's a novice. Her alter ego Naminé is pretty much Kairi's SuperMode, pulling off ridiculous stunts and displays of power, while in her home series, she never fights.

*** For most of IDW continuity, Devastator was the only functional [[CombiningMecha combiner]] either side had, and as such tended to be a dominating force on the battlefield.

** Superion get's a dose of this in ''ComicBook/TheTransformersCombinerWars'' along with [[TookALevelInBadass taking a level in badass]]. After Devastator tore him apart, he's rebuilt and upgraded by Wheeljack and the Enigma of Combination. He fights Menasor similar to how he did in the cartoon, but there it was one of the few times a Decepticon triumphed over their Autobot counterpart, and Superion needed Omega Supreme to win. Here, Superion demonstrates a number of new tricks and beats Menasor easily.

** ''ComicBook/TheTransformersRobotsInDisguise'' has this with Devastator, who was the biggest con to fall victim to TheWorfEffect, even in his debut episode. In this series, he TookALevelInBadass, rampages through the city unopposed, and easily tears Superion in half. In the Dreamwave continuity he couldn't even land a hit on Superion, and only won because of the seekers.

Added DiffLines:

* Whilst Claire, Steve and Chris were already zombie-killing badasses in ''VideoGame/ResidentEvilCodeVeronica'', they upgrade into full-blown Shonen anime protagonist territory in the comic adaptation. Full-fledged GunFu antics and crazy stunts become the norm, with Chris in particular killing a Hunter with ''one punch'', beating a Bandersnatch to death with his bare hands, killing the Gulp Worm by letting himself be swallowed by it before blasting a way out with his shotgun and then tossing a grenade into the hole after himself, and riding a giant spider whilst stabbing it to death with his knife.
