* AllegedlyDateless: Really Mark? Shags with eighteen different girls and counting at the age of 22? Even if some were rubbish, that's still more than the average reader can hope to achieve in their lifetime. Its only by frequency comparison that he can be said to be going through a dry spell relative to Sick Boy.

to:

%%* FromBadToWorse
%%* FunetikAksent
* FromBadToWorse: More or less the theme of the novel. Near the beginning, things aren't bright in an overall context but they're not so awful: The characters are living through a depressed Thatcherite era of low employment and social decline, but Renton attends university while working and partying on the side, Sick Boy is [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold a genuine mate]] despite his lecherous side, Allison begins a promising new job in the face of her mother's terminal illness, etc. But gradually the pressures of drugs and life grind the characters down until they reach the hopeless state we see in ''Literature/{{Trainspotting}}''.
* FunetikAksent: A staple for Irvine Welsh. Every character speaks (and is written in) one accent or another; some characters even think and narrate their chapters in their accents. Renton lampshades this while writing his rehab journal, pointedly (and irritatedly) correcting his "correct" English to better reflect how he truly speaks and thinks. Sick Boy, on the other hand, might speak and think in "proper" English while scamming, but inevitably slips back into his true verbiage while with his mates or under stress.

* InelegantBlubbering: Allison is reduced to this [[spoiler: after her suicide attempt]]. Her lover reflects that his mental image of comforting her in her anguish doesn't measure up to the reality at all.
-->It was then she looked at him, in mounting anxiety, letting him see her cry for the first time ever. It didn't make him feel the way he'd envisaged it would; big, manly and protective. Her face was horribly distorted, and he shared her wretched pain, and powerlessnes at being unable to make it go away.

%%* * RingRingCrunch: The first sentence of the "Dirty Dicks" chapterchapter opens with Renton emphatically slugging "a beepin bastard ay a clock intae silence".

%%* StartOfDarkness: For Renton and especially Sick Boy.

to:

%%* * StartOfDarkness: For most of the characters. Renton and especially goes from a low-class working man on his way up to a hopeless criminal junky; Sick Boy.Boy from a LoveableRogue [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold with a heart of gold]] to a pimp and pusher who would sell out anyone for money and a kick.

* BreakTheCutie: Depending on how much you like their characters, arguably Renton, Spud, Keezbo, Second Prize, Alison, Leslie and Sick Boy (though this was [[Literature/{{Trainspotting}} before]] his DespairEventHorizon...) among others. Its not entirely clear if Matty was ever what you might call a cutie, and even if he was, he seems to have broken long before even this prequel.

** A less fatal example for Second Prize. While his alcoholism is quite dysfunctional in this novel, he eventually gets to the point where he can kick the habit, train for another shot at professional football and sip an orange juice. But ''Trainspotting'' shows that the sobriety didn't last. It took much longer until the time of ''{{Porno}}'' before it stuck.

Biggus Dickus was renamed to Bigger Is Better In Bed. Deleted "example" with no context to tell me if it fits the definition. Removed a link to Country Matters in the Country Matters example; there's no need to link to the exact same page just a few words later. Removed potholing of a main trope name and re-alphabetized accordingly, per policy.

* CountryMatters: Par for the course in a Welsh novel. However, Matty's use stands out. Much more often than not, he simply refers to everyone else as "Cunt". Its no exaggeration to say this helps to make him one of the least sympathetic of the protagonists, and that really does say something when [[CountryMatters country matters]] is tossed around as freely as it is by almost every other main (and peripheral) character.

* [[IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming Idiosyncratic Chapter Naming]]: The gang's more disturbing struggles with heroin really kick off in Junk Dilemmas No. 1-4, with trademark italics. This is an important CallForward to ''Literature/{{Trainspotting}}''. And then you have The Rehab Diaries, intermittently charting 45 days of Renton's cold turkey at St. Monan's. Also, there's Notes On An Epidemic 1-7, explaining the myriad events leading to the skag addiction cum HIV infestation Edinburgh played host to in the eighties.

As a prequel to ''Literature/{{Trainspotting}}'', we know it won't stick. [[spoiler: Sure enough, the novel ends with the phone going off, almost certainly from their dealer.]]
