Co-creator Edwards, while he always wanted to tell his own pirate story, has admitted to being partially inspired by ''Series/{{Torchwood}}'' and ''Series/{{Angel}}'', while adopting elements of various mythologies (including fairy tales), and classic horror films. While both created the initial concept, it was Edwards who mainly developed the stories, while Mogan has spent much of her time on other projects.

Unlike its parent series (and its prequel), this series is DarkerAndEdgier, HotterAndSexier, and BloodierAndGorier, while maintaining the humor (since Edwards is guiding the direction, there's more pop culture and political/anti-establishment undertones, as is prominent in his own Webcomic/{{The Dynamite Twins and Friends}}). This is also a slight {{Deconstruction}} of a typical pirate tale.
