* FantasticPrejudice: The course 1 students in general view the course 2 students with a lot of contempt, and feel they're leagues above the latter group. While 1's are generally considered pretty powerful, Tatsuya is considered a 2, yet manages to defeat the Vice President in the blink of an eye during a mock battle.

Added DiffLines:

* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: This trope is why magician society is [[ConditionedToAcceptHorror so fucked up]]. Magic usually trumps combat, magic is determined by one's genes, and the setting is a futuristic one where genetic engineering and slave soldiers bred from birth are entirely acceptable if one has the right connections. The result is a giant clusterfuck of arms-racing, ArrangedMarriage[=s=], and aristocratic cold war. (Although it ''does'' mean that each successive generation, being stronger than their predecessors, is able to defeat their parents if they really want to force an issue.)

* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: After the events of Dahan, the Yotsuba wish for the birth of a magician so powerful none would ever be able to threaten them again; Such a one is born, namely Tatsuya, and they are so terrified of him that most of them argue in favor of killing him while they still can. It takes Maya and Miya's staunch refusal to prevent it. They still devise other ways to control him.

* FantasticNuke: The magical equivalent of these are the Strategic-Class Magicians. Something as minor as a 50 mg water droplet on the outer hull of a ship thousands of miles away was enough to destroy it and devastate much of the surrounding terrain, as well as create tsunami aftershocks. Since we haven't been told the limits of its capabilities, it is possible that Tatsuya could potentially '''DESTROY THE WORLD''' on a whim if he actually cared enough to do it.[[/note]]]]

Added DiffLines:

* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: Quite often happens in the series because of the rather strongly cynical personality of the protagonist. For example, it is [[spoiler: because of the villainous plan that their aunts Tatsuya and Miyuki become at least formally romantically involved, being a biological brother and sister, and precisely because of the aggressive actions of Americans and Chinese, the first is forced to be in the center of a morally contradictory national conflict.]]

* ChekhovsGun: [[spoiler:During the first 15 volumes, the author regularly draws attention to the fact that although Miyuki and Tatsuya are certainly brothers and sisters, they are externally completely different from each other, and some features of Miyuki have no analogues among their relatives. Subsequently, in the 16th volume, it turns out that she was created artificially and her body was genetically modified so that she could restrain her brother's strength and, if necessary, stop him. Thus, since their genes are different, Tatsuya and Miyuki can theoretically become a normal couple and have normal offspring, even remaining at the same time a blood-related siblings with one parents.]]

* SuperpowerfulGenetics: Magic talent is inherited. All the magicians who belong to Ten Master Clans have a very good genetic makeup. Accordingly, the level of magical talent is considered a kind of parameter for dividing people into capable and useless. [[spoiler: One, this trope averted the case of Tatsuya, so as the having of exceptionally good set of genes and being the eldest son of the strongest clan magican, he is not able to use the "real" magic.]]

** In addition, since the development and cultivation of magical genes has been associated for 100 years with genetic experiments on DesignerBabies, the magic talent has become firmly tied to physical attraction, and since then it has been believed that the stronger the person's magical talent, then all the more his features are symmetrical and the he himself more physically healthy and attractive.

Added DiffLines:

* GoryDiscretionShot: Despite the rather gloomy tone of the series, the majority of violence and cruelty usually remains behind the scenes and the reader learns about them from the author or characters. Subverted in anime because of the transfer of battles to the screen.

Added DiffLines:

* RuleOfSymbolism: The ten main magical clans are an allusion to the mafia, and more specifically to {{Yakuza}}. In particular, the author and the characters repeatedly hint at the fact that initially these families were used by politicians and businessmen to secretly and illegally solve their problems. In particular, the family of Kuroba from the Yotsuba clan possesses outstanding skills of magical espionage, including the instantaneous and secretive killing of witnesses. However, later, 10 clans themselves turned them into their puppets due to the developed skills of manipulation, magic and the dangerous secrets recognized during all this time.
