* Deconstructed and subverted in ''Literature/ConvenienceStoreWoman''. The central character Keiko takes HappinessInMinimumWage to a whole new level; she literally centers her entire life around her job as a convenience store employee. Everyone around her finds her ''weird'', since she's in her mid-thirties and has never had a "real job" and is uninterested in getting married. Keiko is perfectly content and only aspires to ''seem'' normal, and even that's only because she doesn't like upsetting people (or enduring their rude, invasive questions about her life). She doesn't actually see any appeal in any of the things that would make her "normal", but she goes through the motions for the sake of others. Much of the story is a critique on how society punishes and scorns those who don't conform to a certain standard, even if they aren't actually doing anything wrong. Keiko is baffled that everyone is so up in arms about her relationship status or lack of ambitions beyond being the best convenience store employee she can be; she's not hurting anyone, and she's happy, so what's the problem?
