-->'''Cazaril''': This is a true prophecy, as true as yours ever were. When the souls rise up in glory, yours shall not be shunned nor sundered, but shall be the prize of the gods' gardens. Even your darkness shall be treasured then, and all your pain made holy.

!!''The Physicians of Vilnoc''
* The story of how Dubro got his demon, both heartwarming and a tearjerker at the same time. His farm dog, Maska, killed a weasel to protect the hens, and the weasel's demon jumped to Maska. Maska was a good enough dog that he was able to keep the demon from ascending, instead remaining a loyal farm dog until he died of cancer that was almost certainly caused by the chaos emanating from the demon. Dubro held his beloved, dying dog to provide him comfort, and in exchange, got the demon. Penric, always big on naming demons, is extremely pleased to find that Dubro thinks of his demon as Maska.

* Kittio wants to try running around with the wicker carts, so Penric lets himself be pulled around the grounds. And then switches places with him, because Penric had wanted an excuse to try it himself.

-->'''Oswyl:''' ''(writing in the postscript)'' I am not sure how demons feel about blessings, so please just give my best wishes to Desdemona.Desdemona.

!!''Penric's Mission''
* After Penric is tossed in a bottle dungeon with a cracked skull after being violently arrested due to his false friend Velka, he asks Des where she would have jumped if he had been killed. After a moment's thought, Des says, "Velka," and then adds that he would not have lived long and would have died in as much pain as she could arrange. Pen muzzily wonders if this is how a chaos demon says, "I love you," and Des confirms that it is.
* After the climactic confrontation at the end, Nikys asks where Des would have jumped if Penric had been killed by the temple sorcerer, assuming that since demons always jump to the strongest rider, Desdemona would have gone into Adelis (who looks horrified at the thought). Des says, no, she would have gone to Nikys because Penric, and by extension Des, loves Nikys.

!!''The Prisoner of Limnos''
* Nikys may not be sure she wants to entrust her future to Penric, but she trusts him with her and her mother's life. Later, too, when in Cedonia, she makes a point to credit him with Adelis' recovery to Tanar and her mother, even though Penric is too modest to draw attention to it.
* Nikys' mother's sheer pride and love for her children, from her initial fear that Nikys had been captured as well, to her assuring Ikos that his pulley system sounds amazing and she would love to try it sometime, to her acceptance of Penric once she learns he healed her son's eyes.
* Nikys' mother has a long talk with her daughter to help Nikys sort out her feelings for Penric. Nikys is at first annoyed at what she feels to be prying, but then realizes how close she came to never getting to have these talks again and instead appreciates it.

* Cazaril's dedication to protecting Iselle and Betriz. When the Provincara recruits him to be Iselle's secretary/mentor/protector, after much reluctance (rightly recognizing that this is a monumental task to which he does not feel equal) he finally acquiesces with, "Then I am yours." The Provincara corrects him, "Iselle's." And Cazaril is indeed Iselle's man even to death.

* Caz has a tendency to sell himself short, so it's satisfying when Palli spells out for him just why people respect dy Cazaril.

* When Ista wants to go on a trip, which all her minders veto out of loving, condescending idiocy (to be fair, they think she's mad, but on the other hand, locking someone up with nothing to do is not helpful), Caz, now chancellor of Chalion and one of the few who know the truth of her "madness"/god-touched status, sends her a permission slip, funds for the journey, and an armed escort. When Ista realizes that one of those escort is also discreetly keeping an eye on her and sending reports to Caz just in case Ista's god-touchiness acts up, Ista isn't even offended, because she knows that Cazaril, of all people, understands and respects her (and as chancellor, he kind of needs to be aware of god-activity in Chalion).

* After being separated from her courier-turned-attendant, Liss, under dangerous circumstances, Ista is finally reunited with Liss days later when she rides into the castle where Ista is staying. Ista is so relieved to see Liss safe, she hugs her. Later when Ista's stodgy lady-in-waiting tries to send Liss away on the grounds that Ista should have a more proper attendant, Liss plays dumb until Ista arrives who then makes it clear that Liss is, in fact, exactly what she needs in an attendant.

to:

* At the end, Liss is thoroughly enthusiastic to learn her lady Ista is in a relationship with Illvin.

!!''The Curse of Chalion''

* Pretty much any time someone cuts Cazaril a break.
** The Provincara welcoming him into her househould when he returns Chalion after two years in the slave galleys and seventeen years after she'd last seen him as a boy.
** Betriz, in middle of switching gears from attending Iselle's most dreaded marriage until [[spoiler:after Cazaril performs Death Magic and kills her unwanted fiance]] to helping her ready for a joyous funeral, makes sure Caz (who appears deathly ill at the time) is cleaned up, given fresh warm linens and warm milk toast to eat.
** Then Iselle, ordering the Temple of the Mother of Summer to send their best physician up to Caz's room to examine his tumor.
** Royse Bergon recognizing Caz [[spoiler:as the man who'd saved him from defilement on the galley]] and practically hopping up and down for joy.
** Betriz firmly turning down Caz's suggestion that she marry his friend Palli instead, when she knows perfectly well Caz is dying.
** Iselle decreeing that [[spoiler:Caz and Betriz marry]]. "I'm not sacrificing her to you as a reward for your loyalty. I'm bestowing you on her as a reward for ''her'' loyalty."
* Palli's almost puppy-like joy at finding his old friend alive and well.
-->'''Palli:''' Caz, Caz! I kiss your hands! I kiss your feet! Caz, man! I'd thought you were dead!
* When the Fox of Ibra accedes to Cazaril and Iselle's demands in their negotiations. Played up across the book as the epitome of hard-nosed calculation, a man who would go to war with his own eldest son to make sure he got his way when it came to his kingdom, the Fox is suddenly flush with paternal pride as Cazaril points out [[spoiler:Iselle and Bergon's marriage may not buy Chalion for the Fox, but nor does it sell Ibra out from under him or his son, and it gives his future grandchildren a unified Chalion-Ibra without a single life being wasted]]. The Fox ''does'' have a soft spot!

!!''Paladin of Souls''
* Ista picks up enough fragmented information in the first half of the book to expect the tale of Arhys and Illvin to be one of envy, betrayal, and fratricide. What she sees when she gets them coherent in the same room at the same time is a joyful reunion between two devoted brothers.
* Ista and Arhys exchanging blessings just before Arhys sets out on his last ride. Also qualifies as a tearjerker.

!!''The Hallowed Hunt''

-->'''Ingrey''': [''despairingly''] I don't know what side I'm on. All walls seem to spin away from me. [''pause for internal monologue'']. You are my side. And you are not alone.\\
'''Ijada''': Then... neither are you.\\
'''Ingrey''': [''stunned''] Sweet logician. [''kisses her'']

* Ingrey and Ijada's marriage, in the middle of a funeral, with the spirit of the last dead man smiling with approval and standing as one of the witnesses.

!!''Penric's Demon''

* Penric's prayer to the Bastard, pleading for Desdemona's continued existance.
--> '''Penric''': Lord God Bastard, Mother’s Son, Fifth and White. Please spare Desdemona. She’s a ''good'' demon.
* Also Desdemona's reaction, afterwards.
--> '''Desdemona''': You looked a ''god'' in the eyes. And spoke for ''me.'' There is nothing in my power that I will ever refuse you, after that.

!!''Penric and the Shaman''

* Oswyl's postscript in his letter to Penric, at the end of the story - especially given how Oswyl at first considered Desdemona to be an unnatural, dangerous ''thing'', rather than a person.
-->'''Oswyl:''' ''(writing in the postscript)'' I am not sure how demons feel about blessings, so please just give my best wishes to Desdemona.
