** It's implied with the number of women, children and clearly ill/wounded/old men that these are the peasants who are either incapable or unwilling to fight, and Robin outright states that all have been violently driven from their homes with many having been tortured and probably a good number rescued from a death sentence. They're not part of the Merry Men per se, they're simply people who flocked to Robin for his protection. I'd imagine that protection extends to keeping them hidden from Guy, the Sheriff and likely several of the guards responsible for them hiding in the forest in the first place since they can't fight their way out of a bad situation should one have arisen.
