** Considering the show's historical information, the Earth Military Collation was created in 2000 due to several scientists noticing the Arks before they arrived (the Arks arrived on April 4, 2013). So, it could be possible that the EMC were taking potential applications for Enlistment due to possible worse case scenario (meaning, they were planning for the worst and hoping for the best) long before they arrived, and were taking applications from people younger than 18 due to the fact that the alien's tech could lead to massive loss of life, and anyone who could fight (no matter what age) was better than not having anyone at all. This similar scenario was presented in the Ernest Cline novel ''Armada'', where they had kids as young as 13 years old enlisted with the human military and a bulk of the population on Earth unaware that there was an alien threat on the way.

When it comes to war with aliens, the enemy may not care about the age of any humans they are willing to kill (including if they're soldiers or not). To the EMC, it's possible that they saw all of humanity's head on the chopping block, so any individual, no matter how young, is better than having no one able to fight.

** Also, considering that the EGO is relatively new (at least at the time that VBI started advertising for the expedition to the Bay as seen [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcHMEyJ7S-4 in this video]]). So, seeing that the EGO is new tech that is being installed in VBI hired Arkhunters, it's safe to say that the personalized shields may be new tech as well that is only available to said hired Arkhunters, and as pointed out above with Nolan, the tech may have been optional should the Arkhunter want it with Nolan opting out.

** Not to mention, it's also a prison that is probably for more high profile/dangerous people, like how Alcatraz used to be. Though Camp Reverie exists outside of town (as Nicky mentions that she was there in the Season 1 episode "Goodbye Blue Skies", it seems to be used by minor crimes committed. So, something more severe like murders are either sent to Vegas Prison, or the criminal who committed the crime is executed.

** Another possibility: in regards to Castithan culture and for those in the ruling caste, it may be that married women are forced to perform masturbation on their husbands. I mean, seeing how married Castithan women are shown to be sub-servant to their husbands, it might be (or might have been when Datak, Stahma and many other "old system" Castis when they were back in the Votanis system) that for Castithan males in the ruling castes have their wives do it so as a way to constantly remind them of their "place" in the marriage and/or society. I mean, Stahma even asks him if he really wants to keep the "old ways", which he responds by saying that now since he is on top that he does. If the "old ways" of their society includes forcing the wife to rub off her husband at his demands it, whenever and wherever, there's a good chance Datak would know about it and use it. When he tried it on Doc Yewll, however, he forgot one thing: she's not Castithan, thus wouldn't have followed those rules.

*** It's also possible, if Defiance has a library, that they may have a weekly movie night as well, showing old Earth movies. When it came to New York (prior to being terraformed) and other cities throughout the world, it probably still had movie theaters that showcased their countries' iconic films. This would explain how Berlin came to learn about filmmaking, as many filmmakers learn about how to "read" films from viewing them. From observing past films, it's helps filmmakers understand shot composition and meaning (hence Berlin's explanation of why she wanted to include background rock croppings when filming Pottinger for a documentary).

** Also, saying that Alak should be able to know what humans do because he's married to one is like saying Christie should know everything about Castithans before marrying Alak. Just because you're married to someone of a different culture doesn't mean that you'll known everything about it before you get married. As we see with Season 1, Christie and Alak clearly are trying to learn about each other's culture while they're getting prepared for marriage AND after they get married. And both still had a long ways to go.

** As noted on the character page, this is presumably a sign of the deep cover process being more advanced. She also knows she's an Indogene (though that problem was probably solved simply by just giving up on the memory imprint thing altogether). The other guy was a prototype, remember, apparently one of the very first altered in such a way (and probably didn't get very far in the process, more than likely to see if they could get certain things to function such as the human-like exterior and memory function. That means he was probably put in storage because the memory portion wasn't functioning properly and instead of being a deep cover operative with memories of who/what they were, he instead became a copy of [[=McClintok=]]).

** It makes sense that towns like Defiance would have a library chock full of books, music on CD and vinyl, video games, comic books and movies that would be available to lend, as well as the necessary equipment like the video game consoles and players for the music and movies. Even more so with New York. Towns would try to preserve the art of the past, since its an important part of society, and probably allows access to the civilians of those towns so that it's not just locked up sitting in a box somewhere.

* According to the backstory, Nolan was born in 2003, Amanda in 2011, and who knows how young Berlin is. Are they really old enough to remember (and appreciate) the original ''Film/StarWars'' movies? Especially when they basically grew up in a world full of ''real-life aliens''? Or the work of Music/{{REM}}, for that matter? REM had broken up before Amanda was even ''born''! Is everybody on post-terraforming Earth a retro hipster nerd?

** If the egg was planted under the bed, sufficient food for the hatchling to grow to a dangerous size could have been left right there beside it. If it came in from outside, the hellbug could have scavenged enough to grow that much before it caught a whiff of the pheromones, then burrowed towards the source and emerged beneath it.

Misuse. It\'s Genre Savvy, not just \"savvy\".

* Why, oh why did Nolan confront Stahma? He seems GenreSavvy enough to not tip off a potential enemy, that he ''himself identified as the "dangerous one,"'' yet that is exactly what he does. It seems like an extremely dumb move to inform a dangerous rival that you are watching them, again, ''especially as he identifies her as the more dangerous of the two.'' The "I'm just a dumb monkey that can't understand what just happened" defense should have been the one used, with a careful (and secret) eye on the "dangerous one."

It's not unheard of for the terraforming to have missed or skipped some areas--sure, Defiance was an edge case with the ''Kaziri'' protecting itself and by extension the town, so the miracle isn't that this place was untouched, it's that this place she had a special connection to was untouched.
