** It stems from when the BAOR (the British Army Of the Rhine) were based in Northern Germany. A lot of squaddies used the do "The Pools" which was (and in some ways, still is) a popular way to bet on the results of football matches. Germans who had befriended the squaddies learnt all about the pools and seeing as betting on football matches in Germany was illegal at that time, also tried to run their own pools based on English football results, using information gleaned from Forces Radio and the squaddies themselves.
