* CallForward: On Peter's ship, Rocket shows off a bomb "for if things get really hardcore. Or if you wanna blow up moons." Gamora's response is, "Nobody's blowing up any moons." [[Film/GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol2 Guess what happens in the next movie?]]

* ArtisticLicenceBiology: As seen in AlienBlood, Xandarian blood is blue -- and yet they're indistinguishable from humans, when by all rights they should look like the Kree.

* AuthorUsurpation: Ask anyone to name a film made by Creator/JamesGunn, and ''Guardians of the Galaxy'' and it's sequel are the only ones people will ever be able to name and the only ones he'll be associated with, despite the fact that he made plenty of films before them.

* CarFu: Peter, Gamora, and Rocket steal some mining equipment in Knowhere, then take advantage of how tough they are to just ram and grab a bunch of necropods and tear them apart.

* BlindShoulderToss: Rocket is discussing what he will need for escaping the prison of Klyn, including a quarnyx battery behind a black casing with a yellow light. Without waiting, Groot cluelessly goes for it behind Rocket's back, ripping out the casing and tossing it behind him; it lands on the head of another inmate, knocking him out.

* BadassBaritone: Groot has a deep voice and he's the nicest person in the movie.

** Korath has visible machinery sticking out of his head.

* ApocalypseHow: The Collector's video shows the Space Stone being used in the past to raze an entire inhabited planet with a WorldWreckingWave -- the devastation is a ApocalypseHow/Class6 only a few degrees short of being a ApocalypseHow/ClassX, and it's implicit that this wasn't the only time the Stone was used in such a way. [[spoiler:Ronan intends to use the Stone to destroy Xandar this way]].

** In the Japanese dub. it's not the first team we hear Creator/KoichiYamadera (Star-Lord) leading a team of misfits [[Anime/CowboyBebop in space]]. This is actually a two-for-one, as Gamora is dubbed by Creator/RomiPark, who famously voiced another character [[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist named Ed]].

* BattleBolas: Peter Quill uses a pair of energy bolas when he is attacked by Gamora, who attempts to steal the Orb from him. Quill quickly takes out a pair of energy bolas and throws them at Gamora, briefly incapacitating her.

** The largest one goes to TheHero, Peter Quill. From a LovableRogue [[AntiHero who's looking out for number one]], to a more heroic figure that "gives a shit." Also, as opposed to [[SmallNameBigEgo just spouting it around for most of the film like a jackass,]] [[BecomingTheBoast he also earns the name]] [[AwesomeMcCoolname Star-Lord]] by the end of the film.
** Rocket starts as an anti-social, [[TheNapoleon angry]] [[SociopathicHero misanthrope]] with only one long-suffering friend to accepting his TrueCompanions: his moment of vulnerability with Drax is the culmination of this arc.

** Movie Drax is a blend of the [[CrusadingWidower original]], [[DumbMuscle the '90s]] [[CloudCuckoolander era]], and the modern knife-wielding versions of the comic-book Drax.

* CryCute: After two hours of being a violent, mean, and foul-mouthed {{Jerkass}}, Rocket finally becomes the adorable little raccoon he's meant to be as he [[spoiler:tenderly holds the bundle of sticks that remains of Groot]], and weeps like a vulnerable child.

** Movie Drax is a blend of the [[CrusadingWidower original]], [[DumbMuscle the '90s]] [[CloudCuckoolander era]], and [[KnifeNut the modern]] versions of the comic-book Drax.

** In-universe example; Rocket is trying to convince the Guardians that they need a Ravager's bionic eye as part of the plan to [[spoiler:stop Ronan from using the Infinity Stone to destroy Xandar]], but they won't have any of it. Even while he's trying to convince the team he needs it for the setup, his voice cracks for a second and he can barely refrain from laughter.
** While the Broker is trying to explain to Yondu why he can't discuss the details of the Orb or its buyer, Yondu keeps cutting him off by babbling gibberish. Kraglin struggles to keep a straight face at Yondu's antics until he lets out a blatant snigger.

* CallingTheOldManOut: Quill, once he's finally had it with Yondu bringing up how he kept the Ravagers from devouring him as a child for years on end (see ImAHumanitarian for the quote).

* AluminumChristmasTrees: Groot's language (which consists entirely of the phrase "I am Groot" which can have hundreds or possibly thousands of different meanings depending on tone) isn't as absurd as it seems at first blush. To wit, there are real languages where the same word can have dozens of different meanings depending on the tone. Also, most animal's "languages" consist of one basic sound (such as a cat's meow) which can have numerous meanings depending on the tone and other variables.

* {{Always a Bigger Fish}}: Combined with a {{Played for Drama}} BrickJoke. In The Avengers, Loki is visibly unsettled when The Other threatens him. In this movie, The Other is KilledMidSentence by Ronan with the greatest of ease.
