** While the point is supposed to not be malice, but incompetence (and as pointed out by the AI prosecuting attorney)...In the end it comes back to malice. Galacti-Transit is a private company being operated by the government, and while the author definitively thinks governments tend to be ''very, very bad'' at running private companies, the fact is the administration of Galacti-Transit is confirmed being sued for corruption at the end of the issue. It is strongly implied that they accepted money from the businesses that would be threatened by zero point power and other technologies to act in such a criminally negligent way ; and an higher governmental authority end up being the one who put an end to their schemes, so the story ends up being a BrokenAesop.

*** the main character himself said he predicted this outcome yet chose to do it anyway. The fact is he had means to also give other technologies that are used to prevent random people from his own civilisation to blow stuff up. Plus the point still stands as both the terrorist attack and the response were told fromhis point of vue, we are not sure he didn't change details that didn't suit him. Same for the supposed new prosperity of those people, or the supposed fact they couldn't get there on their own without his intervention

* The Coldest Equations chapter takes all of the fridge horror of ''Literature/TheColdEquations'' story, and turns it into a court case: What kind of a society would impose a death sentence penalty for stowing away on shuttles with zero security, allows literally no margin of error for said shuttles, and cut the shuttle's operating parameters to the point that there literally wasn't even room for a co-pilot? The space shuttles used by the Parodians would not, by 20th century standards, be cleared for flight about 1,000 feet!
** Spaceships have extremely tight tolerances. You may have A payload, B food, C water, D air, E reaction mass, and F crew. The ship itself has a dry weight of G. Solve this in a way that gets you to destination H in under I time. Any positive change to value F, such as a stowaway, means you don't have enough of value E to get you to H in under I, and not enough of D to get you there alive. Everyone on board suffocates a million miles away from where they want to go, and it's a tossup between running out of air and running out of retro rocket delta-V before you stop, but you're equally dead and your family owes a MegaCorp several million dollars. Granted, there should be some security to keep stowaways out of the ships at all, but there's a reason that stowaways get thrown overboard.

** Well, except that, as Commander Quinn later mentions, the planet in question, and the race that lives there, are thriving members of the galactic community. His actions are akin to giving people fuel oil and fertilizer: You won't be surprised if they create bombs with it, but that's not what you gave it to them for. Likewise, the crash of the city-plate was a choice of a native terrorist organization, and the nuking of the terrorist organization's home city was a choice of the newly-established native government. Not that this makes Quinn feel any better, since he witnessed the aftermath of both incidents first-hand as a first responder.

* As noted elsewhere, both the Fedorks and the Parodians are ''incredibly'' screwed-up societies. What's interesting is that both of them got that way for the same reason: Neither is held responsible for the consequences of their actions. If it weren't for the influence of Cue, the Fedorks would ''have'' to come up with at least a vaguely functional social structure or they'd all blow up and/or starve to death. And Quentin himself notes that if Galacti-Transit had had to deal with market realities (like a proper business) rather than being an un-elected, unaccountable government bureaucracy, then the screwed-up mess of ''The Coldest Equation'' could never have happened...Which in itself is a bit of a BrokenAesop since it is said outright that the members of said bureaucracy are on trial for corruption as their negligence was not born from being sloppy due to being unaccountable but actual intentional criminal intent. It is strongly implyed that they accepted bribes from the companies that would suffer from the competition of zero-point power and such technologies. The aesop is more "watch for corruption and get the money of businesses out of politics" rather than "government service will always screw up". The fact it is another government institution who impose the changes praised by the issue doesn't help

The fact it is another governement institution who impose the changes praised by the issues issue doesn't help

** While the point is supposed to not be malice, but incompetence (and as pointed out by the AI prosecuting attorney)...In the end it comes back to malice. Galacti-Transit is a private company being operated by the government, and the authors definitively thinks governments tend to be ''very, very bad'' at running private companies, the fact is the administration of Galacti-Transit is confirmed being sued for corruption at the end of the issue. It is strongly implyed that they accepted money from the businesses that zero point power and other technologies to act in such a criminally negligent way (very reminiscent of the albedo scandal), and an higher governemental authority end up being the one who put an end to this ; so the story ends up being a BrokenAesop.
** Also, look up the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewster_F2A_Buffalo Brewster F2A Buffalo]], the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M16_rifle M16 rifle]], and the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_Fighting_Vehicle Bradley Fighting Vehicle]] - all so horribly defective that there was only one possible buyer, one which not only bought countless numbers but ''asked'' for them to be built in the ''first place''; ''TheGovernment.'' In the case of [[http://www.rhjunior.com/quentyn-quinn-space-ranger-0123/ the deathtrap shuttle?]] They asked for something cheap and environmentally friendly which could be built, maintained, and supplied solely by low-bid government contractors. Leave out the "cheap" and "environmentally friendly" parts and that's the design statement of NASA's '''Shuttle Transportation System.'''

** To the contrary, however (and as pointed out by the AI prosecuting attorney), the point is not malice, but incompetence. Galacti-Transit is a private company being operated by the government, and governments tend to be ''very, very bad'' at running private companies. The "safety regulations" in question, for example, were part environmental (the stripped-to-nothing shuttles were very eco-friendly) and part technological (could not use any technology not thoroughly approved by the government). The government's ''intent'' was to run a good emergency shuttle service; they were simply incapable of doing so within the regulations they enacted. (For a real-life comparison, ambulances in England are government-run; it was found that [[https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/ambulance-service-in-england government regulations were actually lowering chances of survival]] by allowing only one minute for the paramedics to evaluate a patient.)

And Quentin himself notes that if Galacti-Transit had had to deal with market realities (like a proper business) rather than being an un-elected, unaccountable government bureaucracy, then the screwed-up mess of ''The Coldest Equation'' could never have happened...Which in itself is a bit of a Broken Aesop since it is said outright that the members of said bureaucracy are on trial for corruption as their negligence was not born from being unaccountable but actual intentionnal criminal intent. It is sttrongly implyed that they accepted bribes from the companies that would suffer from the competition of zero-point power and such technologies. The aesop is more "watch for corruption and get the money of businesses out of politics" rather than "governement service will always screw up". The fact it is another governement institution who impose the changes praised by the issues doesn't help
