The trope's not in play for Emerald and Mercury, and Salem was an example of Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse, not this trope — however, there's a question about her trauma occurring in adulthood, so it's being discussed on her character discussion page here.

** Emerald and Mercury are both very nasty people, but their {{Dark And Troubled Past}}s at least partially explain their behavior. Emerald grew on the streets and it seems like she was made very cynical and desperate by the experience. Mercury on the other hand, was raised in isolation in the mountains by his abusive, alcoholic father, who was also an assassin.

Rewrote this. Because a lot of the defining events occurred when she was an adult, this needs to be tied back to what happened in her childhood for this trope to be in play.

Removing misuse. Weiss is neither a villain nor trapped in her racism. The trope that applies to her situation is Fantastic Racism and she swiftly grows out of it after Volume 1. Whitley is also an abuse victim who is given a chance to grow out of his behaviour as soon as he's freed from the abusive situation. The trope that applies to him is Sour Outside Sad Inside and Like Father Like Son (subverted trope into Like Father Unlike Son).

** Weiss harbours a strong distrust of [[LittleBitBeastly Faunus]]. This is because the White Fang, a terrorist group that fights for Faunus rights, has terrorised her and her family for years. The White Fang have kidnapped several of her friends and family, and it's implied that [[AbusiveParents she was a victim of her father's temper brought about by the White Fang's actions]]. The thing is, a later scene reveals that Blake is a Faunus and a former White Fang member, as she blurts out after a heated argument. Weiss' FantasticRacism is wrong, sure, but it's easy to sympathise with her if her backstory truly was that crapsack. The whole aforementioned scene is quite a [[TearJerker tragic]] example of two victims of a very [[GreyAndGrayMorality morally grey conflict]] butting heads.
** Weiss' younger brother Whitley is in the middle of one. Ever since his first appearance, Whitley has been antagonistic towards Weiss under a thin veneer of being a supportive sibling catching up with and checking on her sister, but otherwise wants nothing to do with her. When Weiss confronts Whitley in Volume 4 about his false affection for her, Whitley reasons that they must follow their father's expectations. In volume 7, Weiss' mother gently reminds Weiss that both his sisters abandoning Whitley with his emotionally abusive father and neglectful mother certainly isn't helping.

Dewicking, since it's an inaccessible roleplay filed under Unpublished Works now.

* Lord Doom, an EvilOverlord WellIntentionedExtremist supervillain from the ''Roleplay/GlobalGuardiansPBEMUniverse'' was nine years old when he became the only member of his family to survive internment in a Nazi concentration camp (his father was executed right in front of the boy by a camp guard who was "merely testing his newly-issued pistol"). He didn't even have the consolation of a community of Holocaust survivors to relate to as his family wasn't Jewish, or Gypsy, or Slavs... there were merely politically inconvenient. His campaign to take over the world is founded on his very real, very sincere, and very, '''''very''''' obsessive wish that no more children suffer the loss of their Mommy and Daddy and little sisters like he did.
