* InspirationallyDisabled: It attempts to avoid this trope, but much like ''Film/ShallowHal'''s utter failure at being "fat positive", the movie falls short of showing a developmentally disabled girl's moving out of her parents house and falling in love as anything other than a Narmy "triumph of the human spirit." The film basically displays Carla and Daniel desire to get married and move into their own place as cute rather than worthy of respect.\

Ambiguous Disorder is now Diagnosed By The Audience and goes on YMMV page

* AmbiguousDisorder: The name of the disorder Carla has isn't stated, but her mother says "She has all the symptoms". If it's supposed to be autism, she doesn't act very much like someone who has it and doesn't seem to consistently behave like anyone who has any particular disorder inhibiting mental ability or social interaction. Her school grades are shown to be average, and her disability seems to mostly make her quirky and socially awkward. The nature of Daniel's disability isn't clear, either; while he has a more difficult time in school, he also demonstrates that he's capable of holding a part time job.

* [[OverprotectiveDad Overprotective Mom]][=/=]MyBelovedSmother: Carla's mother, Elizabeth, goes to great lengths to protect her. However, Carla and other characters feel she's taking it too far. In attempts to bond with her, she pressures her into activities in which she has no interest (such as tennis). Meanwhile, she initially shoots down all Carla's efforts to gain more independence before ultimately giving in.
