They have to rescue a person (whose identity initially is kept from them) from the evil Enchantress (Creator/CaraDelevingne) in Midway City, who has destructed much of the city and magically turned many humans into her HumanoidAbomination mooks. The team is led, and kept on a leash, by Colonel Rick Flag (Creator/JoelKinnaman), who also has a personal interest in this mission since the Enchantress demonically possesses his girlfriend.

* BodyHorror: Enchantress, and their army of meat puppets. The meat puppets, who are named in the behind-the-scenes extras as the "Eyes of the Adversary", so named because their heads are covered with entirely black eyes. At least Enchantress and Incubus have the proper number of facial body parts.

** The actor playing Rick Flag (Creator/JoelKinnaman) was 37 years old when the movie came out in 2016. This means that Rick Flag is ludicrously young for his rank. Maybe in 10-15 years he'd realistically expect to make Colonel.

** In addition to that, the trailer makes it seem like the movie offers a significant alternative to the usual superhero movies. The fact that the protagonists are villains was glossed over through exposition and has little relevance to most of the story. The Squad actually behaved much more like antiheroes, which is quite a common trope.

* LoveRedeems: A recurring theme in this movie is that while the characters are criminals and have done bad things, they're still people and like most people yearn for love, affection, and friendship. There are several instances where these normally amoral criminals do something heroic for the sake of love or comraderie. Deadshot, at the end of the movie, is reluctant to stay involved anymore once the bombs inside their heads have been deactivated. Then he finds out that his daughter had been writing to him in prison every single day and the letters were withheld. While he is extremely angry he also is moved to the point of tears when he realizes that in spite of being a criminal and assassin, his daughter still loves him and accepts him even knowing he has done terrible things. Afterward he resolves to be a better man who is worthy of such unconditional love.
