** The girl from the beginning of the movie shows complete disregard of driving safety (averting her eyes from the road too long to drink alcohol from the back seat or to check on her cellphone) while going uphill on a two-way road at the side of a cliff with incoming traffic, making you think a near-miss or a head-on collision is bound to happen. Turns out a random rock-fall is what knocks her off the road.

* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Emma and Blake remain perfectly made-up throughout most of the movie. Emma, who gets very grubby during the first quake, even finds the time to wash the blood off her face, reapply her makeup, and go through a complete wardrobe change at one point. It really is way too obvious for comfort. Even when Blake is drowning, visibly inhaling water, her beauty is on full display.

* TheDulcineaEffect: Subverted. Ben runs some risks for Blake, but his actions repeatedly make clear that he and his brother come first. After all, he only met her that day. However, his reaction to her after seeing her risk her life to keep Ollie safe veers into this trope, with him dreamily calling her amazing.

** In even more fairness to Ray, the helicopter he was in was explicitly being taken in because its winch (an extremely important tool in air rescue) was broken and needed to be fixed. While the severity of the disaster shown would undoubtedly make the broken winch moot, as all hands and vehicles would be needed, it would also require returning to a staging area and getting new orders. The call from Emma gives Ray knowledge that there are people in need of help "right now" and he knows "exactly" where they are. If anything, going to save as many people as possible alone "and" with busted equipment is a testament to Ray’s dedication to and skill at his job.
