* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: [[spoiler:A villainous example.]] At the end of the movie [[spoiler: Mr. Joshua and Riggs square up for a DuelToTheDeath. However by this point Joshua is unarmed and they are surrounded by cops so even if Joshua wins there's no chance he's getting away. It's pretty clear that Murtaugh is only allowing the fight as a courtesy to Riggs.]]

* OohMeAccentsSlipping: Mel Gibson hadn't quite shed his Australian accent yet and it can be heard occasionally leaking through, such as when he says ""you guys already know what your rights are" during the scene at the Christmas tree lot.

Roger Murtaugh (Creator/DannyGlover) is an LAPD cop who prefers to play by the rules, cares for his family, and worries about getting too old ([[CatchPhrase for this shit]]). He gets partnered with Martin Riggs (Creator/MelGibson), a suicidal narcotics cop still grieving the recent death of his wife, and is also well versed with both martial arts and gunplay which, added to his [[TheBerserker berserker]] tendencies, make him a candidate to be registered as a [[TitleDrop lethal weapon.]] They start tracking down the BigBad of the film, a major drug dealer who has ties within the military.

Aversions aren't "narrow"

* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: ''Narrowly'' averted with Dr. Stephanie Woods. As an LAPD Psychiatrist, she's (rightly) concerned Riggs is unstable and trying to get him benched at best (and discharged from the LAPD at worst). But as Riggs and Murtaugh's argument after the suicide jumper later reveals, Riggs' love for his job is the only thing keeping him going in the wake of his wife's death. Had Woods succeeded in lobbying Captain Murphy to remove Riggs from the LAPD, his suicide would've been inevitable. More, without Riggs' partnership, it's debatable if Murtaugh would've been able to crack the Amanda Hunsaker investigation on his own (let alone if he'd have made it out alive had Shadow Company still deemed him a threat).
