** The major narrative throughline of missing children takes on a new level of subtext in this adaptation as a result of [[SettingUpdate its timeline starting in the 1980s]], evoking the paranoia over child abduction and stranger danger that was pervasive in the decade in real life.

** [[spoiler: Georgie being DeadAllAlong -- turns out getting an arm ripped off isn't something most people could survive, let alone a prepubescent child.]] Though some of it might just have been Bill being in denial that [[spoiler: Georgie was actually dead. Their father has every reason to coldly convince Bill that Georgie is indeed dead as a kid his age would never survive losing an arm untreated for a year.]]
** Before one of the visits into the house on Neibolt Street, Richie grabs a glass bottle and smashes it against the railing to try and invoke the movie trick of making a makeshift knife from a broken bottle. After doing it, though, all Richie is left with is the neck of the bottle that he was holding on to, the all-too-common result of trying to get an improvised knife.
** Kids swearing. And a lot. It happens and the movie doesn't pretend otherwise.
** Pennywise was able to mask his killings decades prior because it was a time people died from natural causes or disasters like factory fires were more common due to lack of safety regulations. Recent years though have made it so he has to be a lot more subtle and target those in manners it would be hard to find their bodies which is why he uses the sewer. Even then the only reason people don't notice is because the citizens are too useless or loathsome to actually care.

The adults notice when children go missing, putting up posters, but gradually lose interest and put minimal effort into finding them (it's noted, at one point, new "missing" posters are just stapled up over old ones, like the previous children don't matter). No one but Ben notes the alarmingly high death rate in the town, which is readily available information for anyone who cares to look.

Cool Loser TRS cleanup, has been renamed to Unconvincingly Unpopular Character and is a YMMV audience reaction.

** Richie's sense of humor is modified, where he now makes a ''lot'' more risqué jokes and becomes SirSwearsALot. In the novel, he is more of an off-the-walls goofball who does (very bad) [[ManOfAThousandVoices Voices]], including some ethnic caricatures that were pushing ValuesDissonance even in the '80s. This may be done to downplay Richie's obnoxiousness and make him more funny and appealing to the audience, but has the effect now of turning him into a CoolLoser whose only remaining claim to Loser-hood is his NerdGlasses and probably also the fact that he clearly thinks that he's much funnier than he actually is.

* TooAnnoyedToBeAfraid: In the climax, Pennywise/It attempts to frighten the Losers' Club into submission with a mixture of his usual tricks and a bit of hostage-taking... but after everything that Pennywise has done over the course of the film, the kids are too pissed-off to be scared of him. With the monster unable to [[EmotionEater feed on their fear]], the team gangs up on him and ''[[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beats the living shit out of him]]'' with any weapon they can get their hands on, [[SappingTheShapeshifter countering every single attempt at a menacing shape with another beatdown]]. Daylight Horror is no longer a trope, don't link it anywhere.

* DaylightHorror: Most of Pennywise's appearances and attacks take place in broad daylight, because there's specifically a curfew in order. It doesn't really help anybody.

* AdaptationalHeroism: Downplayed - perhaps more a case of AdaptationalSympathy. In the book Butch Bowers (Henry's father) was an insane ex-Marine. He killed the chickens of Mike's father and was a racist, anti-semitic sexist. He also rewards his son for killing Mike's dog. He regularly chased kids and beat his son. Here he is a police officer and shows none of his insane or racist behavior. He stops his son from bullying the Losers and from shooting a cat. He comes across as a no-nonsense, GoodIsntNice kind of guy who does what he thinks is right to set his delinquent son straight with ToughLove, as opposed to being the novel's sociopath.

* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: Several.
** In the novel, IT merely ripped off Georgie's arm which killed him instantly. In this film, he is still alive after having his arm eaten off but Pennywise then drags him into the sewers where he most likely consumed him entirely.
** In the novel, Patrick Hockstetter died by being consumed by IT in the form flying leeches in the town junkyard while here, he is killed by IT in the form Pennywise while in the sewers.
** In the novel Victor Criss and Belch Huggins were killed by IT in the form of Frankenstein's monster in the sewers while a deleted scene in this film implies that Henry is the one that killed him.
