Unfortunately, for them, Anna was kidnapped at the beginning of the night, and the girl who arrived, Emelie, is not the sitter they hired. Over the course of the night, Jacob comes to realize that something is very much not right, and enters a struggle for his life, and that of his siblings.

!!This film exhibits the following tropes:
* AdultFear: It's difficult enough for parents to leave their children with a stranger, but when you find out that the person who showed up was not the person you hired...
* ChekhovsGun: Howie's fireworks.
* EmbarrassingBrowserHistory: In the course of discussing that they may need to have "The Talk" with Jacob, Dan comments that their son has an "interesting" browser history.
* HarmfulToMinors: Emelie declares that they're going to watch a movie. She pops in a sex tape featuring their father...
* ItWorksBetterWithBullets: Emelie arranges for the children to find their father's gun. Christopher being willing to pull the trigger (albeit thinking it's a toy, and emulating a TV Character) convinces her that he's her "cubby". In a subsequent scene, she reloads the gun with the bullets she removed.
* NoPeriodsPeriod: Averted. Emelie has Jacob fetch her a tampon and inserts it in front of him. Afterwards, the camera shot shows the blood being flushed down the toilet.
* SurpriseCarCrash: Dan and Joyce decide to take a cab home. Emelie phones her accomplice to say that she needs more time. Cue the Thompsons' conversation in the back of the car getting interrupted by a car smashing into them.
* VorpalPillow: Emelie attempts to suffocate Jacob with a pillow, only to realize he's no longer in the bed.
* WouldHurtAChild: Emelie slaps Jacob, tries to smother him, and is implied to have attacked Jacob's friend, Howie.
