* {{Blackmail}}:
** Louis initially assumes Emile has arrived at the factory to demand payment for his silence regarding their shared criminal past and, after threatening him with a gun doesn't work, he offers him a large stack of banknotes. But the thought of blackmail never crosses Emile's mind; he's just happy to see Louis again, and, after getting over his doubts, Louis is happy to see Emile again.
** Late in the film, a large group of former inmates at the prison where Louis and Emile were cellmates show up at Louis' house. No bribe is large enough; they effectively want to share his wealth and status, and if he refuses, they'll show his mugshot to the police. Louis is able to get them arrested for robbery and only narrowly escapes the police when the crooks make good on their threat.

* RagsToRiches: Louis hasn't a centime to his name when he breaks out of prison, but he starts out with a market stall selling records and builds it up to a huge factory making record players.
* RichesToRags: When Louis sees that the police have come to arrest him during the dedication of his fully automated factory, he announces that he is giving the factory to everyone who has worked with him as a gift while he leaves for new adventures. He and Emile disguise themselves in workers' uniforms and flee, finishing the film as penniless (but happy) vagrants.

* WalkingTheEarth: The fate of Louis and Emile, left as tramps, but singing a cheerful song about how the world is round and there are women everywhere.

Some of the gags in this movie, especially the scene on the assembly line where the workers fall behind, were similar enough to ''Film/ModernTimes'' for the producers to sue; Creator/CharlieChaplin settled out-of-court.

out-of-court.[[note]] René Clair was never on board with the idea of suing Chaplin; the two directors remained friends until Chaplin's death in 1977.[[/note]]

Not So Different has been renamed, and it needs to be dewicked/moved

* NotSoDifferent: The assembly line and the working conditions at the phonograph factory are ''very'' similar to conditions at the prison.

Added DiffLines:

''A nous la liberte'' ("Freedom For Us") is a 1931 film from UsefulNotes/{{France}} directed by Creator/ReneClair.

Two petty criminals and best friends, Louis and Emile, are serving time in prison together. They make a jailbreak one night, sawing through the bars of their cell, but Emile cuts his hand in the process. As a result only Louis is successful, scaling the walls with a rope, while Emile is captured by the guards.

Louis makes his way to freedom. He starts selling record players in the market, which turns into him owning his own record store, which turns into Louis being a captain of industry owning a phonograph factory. Meanwhile, Emile is eventually paroled, and then re-imprisoned, and then through some wacky events winds up working at Louis's factory.

Some of the gags in this movie, especially the scene on the assembly line where the workers fall behind, were similar enough to ''Film/CityLights'' for the producers to sue; Creator/CharlieChaplin settled out-of-court.
