** While Loki is more "active" in claiming Hermione's soul, he doesn't ignore his other worshippers; when [[spoiler:Fleur joins Hermione in a ritual, Loki creates a gold medallion with a ''kuanaz'' rune on it to acknowledge that he accepts Fleur's worship, and Hermione traces a similar mark on Fleur's skin to affirm her status as an acolyte of Loki]].

Added DiffLines:

* ClaimedByTheSupernatural: One of the first actions Gabriel takes in claiming Hermione as his worshipper is to remove the "blessing" of Hecate that grants Hermione her magic and replace it with an aspect of his own power, as he refuses to share his most interesting follower for centuries with another pagan god. When Hermione first learns about this, she assures Loki that she would still consider herself his even if she retained Hecate's blessing, but she is truly pleased to have been claimed by her god in such a manner. Her worship to Loki has also made her the "property" of the Norse pantheon, to the extent that when she takes part in a dedication to Samhain as part of a Slytherin tradition Hela is able to lay a claim on Hermione's soul to protect her from other deities.

''[[https://archiveofourown.org/series/968343 The Confectionary Chronicles]]'' is a crossover series between ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' and ''Series/{{Supernatural}}''. When Hermione Granger is seven years old, her older sister Clytemnestra "Ness" Granger commits suicide after being driven to despair by school bullies. Seeking justice for her sister’s death, Hermione performs a ritual dedicating herself to the Trickster Loki to ask for his aid. Loki (in reality the archangel Gabriel) is intrigued enough by Hermione’s request that he not only responds to her request, but begins spending time with her on his own accord as she dedicates herself to her new worship of Loki. As time goes on, Hermione’s devotion to Loki leads to her essentially becoming his High Priestess, as Loki gives her lessons in magic, teaches her about the supernatural, and even introduces her to his children, all before she even starts at Hogwarts.

Hermione is subsequently angered when she finds out about the Cerberus (who she [[AdaptationNameChange names ‘Barkimedes’]]) trapped inside Hogwarts rather than given a larger space, although she doesn’t seem to consider Hagrid ‘bad’ for his role in that as she still treats him in a friendly manner.

Despite her twisted appearance, Gabriel still finds his daughter beautiful, and even Hermione focuses on Hel’s kindness when they meet even if Hel takes care to hug Hermione so that her flesh side is the side closest to Hermione as it’s more comfortable that way.

!!Tropes
*AchievementsInIgnorance: Odin was able to trap Loki without even knowing about his true identity as Gabriel, creating a set of chains that used Loki’s own power to bind him; it took over a century for Gabriel to channel enough of his grace to break them.
*ActionFashionista: Hermione develops a particular style in her attire as she comes to define her identity as Loki’s priestess, favouring loose, flowing dresses in an elegant style with a ‘nature’ theme that nevertheless allows her freedom of movement and a place to hide her weapons. She even has her Hogwarts robes adapted by a descendant of Arachne to give her easy access to her weapons without making it obvious that she’s changed the uniform in any way.
*AdaptationalSpeciesChange:
**Millicent Bulstrode was at least assumed to be human in canon, but here she is revealed to be part-hag.
**The Giant Squid is essentially an elder god that was summoned to Earth by accident and decided to stay in the lake to watch humanity because it found them interesting, where most such entities stay away from Earth and don’t care about humans one way or the other.
*AllPowerfulBystander: Gabriel reflects that the Elder Gods tend to be powerful entities that are relatively neutral towards humanity because they just don’t care enough.
*AllTherapistsAreMuggles: Invoked; despite the benefit of her bond with Loki giving her people she can talk to about her magic, Hermione’s issues eventually hamper her ability to interact with others her age. As a result, Fenris suggests therapy, identifying a shapeshifter in America who works as a therapist who he feels may be able to help Hermione despite her unconventional circumstances.
*AllYourPowersCombined: [[spoiler:Hermione’s wand was already powerful, as it has a scale from Jörmungandr as its core, but Gabriel subsequently enhances it further using a drop of blood and a piece of skin from all of his other children (as well as an additional scale from Jory)]].
*AscendedExtra: Millicent Bulstrode receives a surprising amount of character development, Hermione taking Millicent under her wing in Slytherin as the other girl is socially isolated due to her mother being a hag.
*AssholeVictims: The bullies who drove Ness to suicide, a coven of demon-witches, [[spoiler:Odin]], Draco Malfoy… basically every character directly targeted by Loki, Hermione [[spoiler:or Fleur]] deserved everything that Loki and his acolytes do to them.
*AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Hermione’s bond with Loki/Gabriel accords her the status of a High Priestess, to say nothing of her possessing a part of Loki’s power after he granted her his blessing to replace her original magic.
*AuthorityInNameOnly: Two distinct versions of this feature in Slytherin;
** It is revealed that Slytherin students tend to have such low respect for Dumbledore and other teachers that the Slytherin prefects don't hold much "power" in their own house, with each year choosing a particular student as its respective "leader".
** While Draco Malfoy was considered basically a definite choice for the leader of his year when he arrived at Hogwarts, he is swiftly undermined by Hermione, who demonstrates exceptional magical skill due to her ties to Loki. While Hermione defeats Malfoy in a duel, she makes it clear that he can have the leadership position if he wants so long as he and others leave her and her particular friends alone, but Draco is aware that he's only the "leader" of his year because Hermione doesn't care enough about the position to fight for it herself.
**On top of the aforementioned, this initially applies to Hermione, considering that she is a priestess of Loki but just performs the rituals for herself alone, until [[spoiler:Fleur asks to join her in a ritual, essentially expanding Hermione’s ‘flock’]].
*BecomingTheMask: While Loki was originally the archangel Gabriel, he has spent so long acting as a pagan god that he has acquired some aspects of their behaviour and abilities, such as an awareness of the faith of his worshippers when they’re conducting prayers and rituals, even if he doesn’t ‘need’ faith the way other gods do.
*BeenThereShapedHistory: During her visit to Hogwarts as the school was being built, Hermione plays a minor but important role in the creation of the Sorting Hat, and also witnesses Rowena Ravenclaw create the Room of Requirement.
*BeingGodIsHard: Hermione explicitly acknowledges this as one of the reasons she doesn’t pray to Loki for help with every little thing in her life, recognising that he’s a god who deserves her respect rather than to be bothered by more petty demands.
*BerserkButton: The news that [[spoiler:Odin has captured Hermione prompts all of Loki’s children (with the exception of Hel as she literally can’t leave her realm) to join their father in attacking Odin to rescue Hermione]].
*{{BFG}}: [[spoiler:Gabriel basically turns Hermione’s wand into the magical equivalent; it was already a powerful wand, with its core a scale from the World-Serpent and the wood from the tree Barnstokkr, but Loki subsequently borrows it to enhance it with a drop of blood and hair from all of his children, only declining to add anything from his true self because that would turn the wand into a weapon of mass destruction comparable to what destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah]].
*BigBadWannabe: Draco Malfoy essentially wants to be Hermione’s enemy at Hogwarts, but from Hermione’s perspective he’s barely an annoyance.
*BloodMagic: The first true ritual Hermione performs for Loki is a blood sacrifice where she cuts her arm and chants worship to Loki over a stone altar she’s assembled. [[spoiler:She later guides Fleur in performing a more detailed ritual when Fleur asks to join her in giving thanks to Loki]], but most of the time Hermione just prays to Loki with offerings of sweets and chocolates, and only performs a ritual on special occasions.
*BondCreatures: Hermione has a strong bond with Vashti, her phoenix companion, to the extent that the two can communicate mentally.
*BullyTurnedBuddy: Ron serves as a minor example of this, as he is initially prejudiced against all Slytherins but Hermione’s willingness to stand up to Malfoy to help Neville soon gives him evidence that not all Slytherins are bad.
*CanonWelding: The magic users of the wizarding world are all essentially ‘descendants’ of the followers of the pagan goddess Hecate, who granted humans a portion of her power in the form of a blessing to try and guarantee herself worshippers as Christianity became more prominent. Various magical beings in the wizarding world are also linked to Supernatural canon, such as Veela being identified as ‘daughters of Eve’ in the sense of the Mother of All from Purgatory.
*ChaoticGood: Loki/Gabriel’s tricks are fundamentally always about helping individuals against those who would abuse them, and he encourages a similar attitude in Hermione even if she’s more openly moral where he’s fundamentally more about the fun. While Hermione’s chaotic behaviour at Hogwarts can concern Gabriel, such as when she informs him that she’s had to duel half a dozen other Slytherin students for attacking her (albeit not at the same time), Gabriel’s son observes that he can’t complain if his devout priestess chooses to court chaos as a form of worship to him.
*ChildProdigy: Hermione, as always; she manages to conduct an exceptional amount of research into how to summon Loki on her own when she’s only seven years old, and improves further over the years with committed instruction from Loki and others, to the extent that she’s completed her GCSEs before she even starts Hogwarts.
* ChildrenRaiseYou: While Gabriel comes to consider Hermione a kind of daughter, given his distant relationship with his own biological children and aware that there’s a difference between raising a pagan god and helping a human child, he ends up asking some of his other children, such as Fenris or Váli, for advice on how to interact with Hermione as they have a better idea of how to talk with children than he does.
*CombatPragmatist: Once Hermione starts getting lessons in fighting, she is often advised to be willing to try anything if it will help her win, such as hitting a ghoul in the back of the head with a magically-summoned rock.
*CompositeCharacter: Where later seasons of Supernatural would establish that Gabriel took Loki’s identity while the original went into hiding, here Gabriel was always the original Loki.
*DarkAndTroubledPast: As well as the death of Hermione’s sister, Gabriel’s past history with the Norse pantheon is expanded on, revealing that he was never actually responsible for Baldur’s death out of deliberate malice towards Baldur but was just the victim of an elaborate and unfortunate misunderstanding that led to Holdr’s death and prompted the creation of a fake prophecy as part of a plan to get revenge.
*DidYouJustPunchOutCthulu: When [[spoiler:Hermione is captured by Odin, she initially manages to escape his grip by kicking the All-Father in the head with both feet (while wearing steel-toed boots), although she is unable to actually escape him on her own]].

*DramaPreservingHandicap: Since Hogwarts has acquired anti-angel wards since it was founded, Hermione is aware from the start of her academic career that she will be unable to call on Loki for help and must rely on herself, although she can still exchange messages with him via Vashti.
*DrivenToSuicide: The fic begins when Hermione’s older sister, Clytemnestra "Ness" Granger, having committed suicide after a particularly harsh period of being bullied at school that culminated in Ness being stripped and tied up outside the school. As Hermione learns more about the supernatural, she becomes concerned that Ness's suicide will have damned her to Hell, but Loki assures Hermione that Hell is for souls tainted by either deals with demons or the evil they have committed personally, rather than souls in so much pain that they sought their eternal rest early.
*EgocentricallyReligious: One of the things that Gabriel likes the most about Hermione is that she defies this trope; where most people start praying to Loki for help with little things in their lives after they’ve learnt he’s real, Hermione always respects and worships Loki as her god and never asks him for help unless she’s sure she needs it (commonly in a life-or-death situation), with Loki offering her support on his own merits instead.
*EvenEvilHasStandards: Depending on whether a first-year student can be considered ‘evil’, even a couple of Malfoy’s year-mates think he went too far when he made a comment about Neville’s brain-damaged parents during a Potions class.
*EveryoneHasStandards: In a sense, Hermione and Gabriel each have their limits in their devotion to Loki and desire to protect Hermione respectively;
** While the nature of their bond at least gives Loki the potential to always read her mind, although Hermione reflects that she would never deny her god access to her thoughts if he wanted to see them she doesn’t keep her mind open so that he can just take a look at everything at any time.
** As much as Gabriel wants to keep Hermione safe, he would never alter her body to make her stronger as he knows how she feels about cheating even if she wouldn’t ask questions if he wanted to do something (he muses that he’s already dreading how she’ll react when she realises he ‘tweaked’ her mind to make it easier for her to learn certain things). Also, while the part of him that’s Loki would like to keep Hermione safe by ordering her to set up a new island community dedicated to his worship, the part of him that’s still Gabriel refuses to limit Hermione’s opportunities to grow even if it puts her at risk.
*FamilyOfChoice: Despite Hermione being only human, Loki’s children all come to refer to her as a sister, to the extent that [[spoiler:each of them donate hair and blood to Hermione’s wand to give it a boost in power, despite the risk of what someone could do even to pagan gods with a sample of their blood]].
*FantasticRacism: It is noted that some hunters have a tendency to assume that anything supernatural is automatically evil, rather than consider the moral shades of grey in any situation (the pagan god was only attacking people who were cutting down its woods, the monster was lashing out after being taken from its home territory by someone else against its will, etc.). John Winchester is presented as one such hunter, with Gabriel only leaving him alone because going after John would draw too much attention to his own presence given Dean and Sam’s role in the future planned Apocalypse.
*FateWorseThanDeath: When Gabriel learns about Grindlewald’s role in the Second World War, he finds the wizard in question and takes him out of time to subject him to the final few moments of everyone who died during the aforementioned for the next few years, guessing that Grindlewald will be a vegetable by the time Gabriel retrieves him.
*{{Foreshadowing}}: While meditating on her future with Lady Morgana, Hermione experiences a vision focused on a rune that resembles a lightning bolt, which she interprets as a reference to Loki as the triumph of light over darkness as she obviously doesn’t yet know about the more personal significance of a lightning-bolt to a future friend of hers…
*GenerationXerox: Where Snape fixated on Harry’s similarities to James in canon, [[spoiler:Harry’s friendship with Hermione despite her being in Slytherin forces Snape to concede that this trait reminds him more of Lily]].
*GodsNeedPrayerBadly: Discussed at various points;
** Loki explains to Hermione that most modern witches and wizards gain their power from a “blessing” performed by Hecate to try and preserve her worshippers as Christianity spread. Unfortunately for Hecate, this failed to guarantee her a steady supply of worshippers as she had intended, as witches and wizards lost their faith in the ‘Triple Goddess’ as time went on.
**Loki himself doesn’t need prayer in the same sense given his true nature as Gabriel, and his children are also relatively unchanged in terms of their potential power as they were never worshipped in the first place. However, after spending so long acting as a pagan god, Gabriel can still draw some power from Hermione’s prayers to Loki, which he uses in particular to help himself travel in time on a couple of occasions without needing to exhaust himself rather than tap into Heaven and draw attention to his presence.
** The need for faith is the reason [[spoiler:Odin was able to capture Loki in the past and lost to him in the present, as Odin has become weaker now that the Norse gods aren’t worshipped on the same scale as they were before whereas Loki and his children are essentially on the same power level as they were in the past]].
**Loki also mentions that while Samhain is a demon who has been trapped in Hell for centuries, he still has a degree of power on Halloween in particular, as mortals perform variations of the rituals he invoked.
*GodzillaThreshold: Faced with the threat of the angels coming down to investigate [[spoiler:the assault on Odin’s forces committed by Loki and his children as they try to rescue Hermione, Gabriel unleashes his full potential as an archangel to destroy Odin while his children escape, managing to time the attack so that he can depart before the angels arrive and destroy most of Odin’s remaining followers while unaware of Gabriel’s own presence]].
*[[HighPriest High Priestess]]: After Hermione performs her first true ritual to dedicate herself to Loki as opposed to just praying to him, she is elevated to the status of his High Priestess, which becomes more than just a title when [[spoiler:Fleur Delacour joins her as an acolyte of Loki]].
*HoistByHisOwnPetard: When Malfoy attempts to get his rivals caught by Filch with the fake wizard’s duel, Hermione taunts him with the fact that his actions could be interpreted as a forfeit of the duel, and Malfoy can’t admit otherwise without admitting that he always intended to set them up, which goes against the idea that he’s meant to be accepting of Hermione’s place.
*HumansAreSpecial: Gabriel reflects that he truly began to love humanity after witnessing some of the acts of compassion amid the horror of the World Wars, ranging from a little girl who faced her execution with courage to the Christmas Truce.
*IgnorantOfTheirOwnIgnorance:
**Gabriel/Loki was unaware of the existence of the wizarding world until seven-year-old Hermione Granger summoned him, Gabriel intrigued enough at Hermione’s natural magic that he goes to considerable lengths tracing where that power came from.
**Fleur only learns after [[spoiler:she has sworn herself as an acolyte to Loki that this prevents her being claimed as part of her grandmother’s Veela clan]], but the Veela matriarch affirms that the fault is with Fleur’s parents for not clarifying how the claiming process would work and Fleur is satisfied with her choice of worship anyway.
*InSpiteOfANail: Although Hermione [[spoiler:becomes the first known muggle-born Slytherin]], she retains her friendships with Harry, Ron and Neville in particular.
*InternalReveal: Of Hermione’s wizarding friendships, [[spoiler:Fleur and Harry are the first people to know about Ness, and only Fleur knows about Hermione’s worship of Loki by the time Hermione starts at Hogwarts]].
*JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Loki can be cruel at times, and he has made questionable choices in the past, but while Hermione is aware of his past mistakes, the more she gets to know him the more certain she becomes that her god will always be there for her when she truly needs him.
*KilledOffscreen: Thor is killed by Loki’s children while [[spoiler:they’re hunting for Hermione]].
*KneelBeforeFrodo: Hermione’s interaction with Loki often involves her kneeling to greet him as a sign of her worship, which Gabriel accepts as the Loki-pagan part of him enjoys the show of respect, but each party has a silent agreement that Hermione will kneel or bow before nobody other than her god, first shown when [[spoiler:Loki stops her even bowing to Morgana]]. However, when Loki kneels to Hermione at one point to offer her a boon as thanks for her faith in his goodness, it reinforces the significance of what he is asking her; even Gabriel can’t recall kneeling before anybody apart from his Father. Hel also kneels to Hermione when the two first meet, although in this case Hel’s intention is just to offer Hermione comfort upon entering her realm rather than to show any kind of ‘submission’.
*LegendFadesToMyth: As Loki explains to Hermione when she finally gets up the courage to ask, the myth about his role in Baldr’s death is distorted. In reality, Loki helped Odin’s half-human son attempt to get revenge on Odin for raping his mother, but the son accidentally killed Baldr’s brother instead, and so Frigg, Odin’s wife, created a false prophecy of the role Loki’s children would play in Ragnarok, resulting in his family being bound for over a century until Loki was able to free himself and rescue them.
*LikeBrotherAndSister: Even after confirming that she isn’t Loki’s biological daughter, the rest of Loki’s children all take to referring to Hermione as their ‘little sister’ when they meet her.
*MagicAIsMagicA: After Gabriel meets Hermione, he learns that the magic of the wizarding world comes from Hecate, who sought to escape the faltering power of pagan gods by creating natural magic users (as opposed to those witches who used demon deals to gain power). Due to the fundamentally selfish pagan aspect of himself, Gabriel removes Hecate’s gift from Hermione but grants her a portion of his own power in turn, not wanting to ‘share’ Hermione with another pagan god but equally not wanting to deprive her of her own potential. As a result, Hermione has the ability to use Trickster-style magic while retaining the ability to learn the magic taught at Hogwarts. It is later revealed that Hermione is not the only such witch to gain power from a source other than Hecate; [[spoiler:the Ollivander family received their magic from a Babylonian god who has since died out]].
*MayflyDecemberFriendship: While Gabriel acknowledges that he prefers to interact with other pagan gods as it always hurts when he loses his mortal friendships (as he can’t visit them in Heaven without drawing attention to himself), he decides that he’s already too attached to Hermione to cut himself out of her life, particularly when such an act would cause her emotional pain in turn.
*MayflyDecemberRomance: Fenris is revealed to do a variation of this, as he occasionally leaves the essence of his godhood with his sister Hel so that he can live a life as a mortal man, Hel returning his godhood when she comes to claim him. When Gabriel first visits him in this fic, Fenris is now an old mortal whose wife died a few years ago but still enjoys his time with his adopted son and the son’s family (which includes Remus Lupin as his grandson), only returning to godhood when [[spoiler:Odin abducts Hermione and Loki needs all of his children to help him rescue her]].
*MetaphoricallyTrue:
** While Hermione has the ability to understand animals, she just claims that she's good at reading their intentions once at Hogwarts, because it's easier than explaining the full truth.
** On a wider note, while Loki hasn’t told Hermione his ‘true’ identity as the archangel Gabriel, he has taken care to never directly lie to her when they’re talking about anything that might relate to his nature.
*MindlinkMates: As well as her ability to talk to animals, Hermione can communicate mentally with her phoenix Vashti.
*MistakenForRelative: Various parties initially assume that Hermione is Loki’s latest daughter, but while Loki does his best to clarify that she’s ‘just’ his priestess rather than his child, [[spoiler:Odin still goes after her thinking that she’s Loki’s child to punish him for their past confrontations]].
*MistakenForX: Essentially the reason the Christian church condemns witchcraft is a result of this. The actual Bible quote ‘Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live’ and other relevant passages is actually a reference to the type of witches who gain their power from making deals with demons rather than those possessing ‘natural’ magic. Gabriel observes that Hecate actually created the modern wizarding world by granting her followers her blessing essentially to take advantage of this idea, Hecate reasoning that Christianity condemning magic would encourage the witches and wizards to still worship her.
*MundaneMadeAwesome: After befriending Fleur during a visit to France, Hermione offers Fleur advice on how to deal with her school bullies through muggle methods; one bully ends up basically bald because she tried to stop a ‘charm’ that was actually just regular superglue.
*MundaneUtility: The closest Loki or any of his children come to doing something ‘mundane’ for Hermione with their powers is when Loki’s son Váli, capable of shapeshifting into a wolf, acts as Hermione’s ‘therapy dog’ when she’s particularly stressed out during her exams before Hogwarts.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: During Hermione’s visit to Hogwarts in the past, she learns that the Giant Squid was named ‘Bertramus’ by Helena Ravenclaw and the Sorting Hat is named ‘Cuthbert’.
*{{Nephewism}}: Hermione gets the female version of this when she’s sent to live with her aunt after her sister’s death as the Grangers can’t properly cope with Hermione, while the [=MacLeods=] are a fishing family who can devote more time to Hermione on her own.
*NoSell: At least discussed; due to his true nature as an archangel, Gabriel lacks most of the weaknesses of traditional pagan gods even as he has some of their strengths (although he retains all the weaknesses of an archangel).
*NoodleIncident: Gabriel was apparently so annoyed at how [[Franchise/MarvelUniverse Marvel Comics]] made Loki the villain that he spent some time inflicting a run of bad luck on the relevant writers and publishers.
*NonHumanHumanoidHybrid: Millicent Bullstrode’s mother is a hag, and it’s later revealed that she has a half-sister, Theodora ‘Thea’ Grymm, whose father was a low-ranking werewolf in Fenrir Greyback’s pack.
*NotSoSimilar: Gabriel muses at one point that he isn’t that different from Lucifer in the sense that neither of them would probably know how to be angels any more even if offered the chance, but concludes that he differs from his brother in that he still cares about humans where Lucifer never did.
*OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: Due to Hermione’s absence during the first Quidditch game, rather than her stopping Quirrell from jinxing Harry’s broom, Harry escapes it by jumping from his broom to George’s, the twins then sharing a broom until Harry can catch the Snitch.
*TheOnlyBeliever: Since Gabriel has grown used to basically ignoring most of the prayers he receives in his role as Heaven’s Messenger (although he will act on some of them as his Trickster self), most of the prayers he receives as Loki are from eccentric wiccans, the odd hunter, the occasional demon or demon-witch (who he tends to kill immediately), rebellious teenagers, or the occasional person so desperate for justice or punishment that they’re trying to summon Loki without really believing in him. Hermione’s prayer thus grabs Gabriel’s attention due to the sheer strength and purity of her belief in him, which leads to her becoming an ‘official’ high priestess of Loki after her first sacrifice, although [[spoiler:her first acolyte is not brought into the fold until shortly before Hermione starts at Hogwarts]].
*OurSoulsAreDifferent: Gabriel confirms that humans are the only beings on Earth to have souls, with even near-human creatures having something different, although part-humans such as Fleur do have souls, [[spoiler:allowing Fleur to pledge her devotion to Loki despite being part-Veela rather than a pure human]]. Nephilim conceived with non-humans, such as pagan gods, also lack souls of their own, but have greater power than most of their other parent’s kind.
*ParentalSubstitute: As she gets older, Hermione comes to realise that Ness was more like a parent to her than a sister as the Grangers were emotionally distant even if they weren’t outright abusive. By the time Hermione leaves for Hogwarts, although she has been essentially ‘adopted’ by her aunt, uncle and cousins due to the growing distance from her parents, Loki is also a parental figure to her, often acting as her magical guardian.
*PlaceOfPower:
**While Hermione can set up an altar to Loki basically anywhere, to perform a blót sacrifice she must be at a location with some significance to the god in question, such as the location where Loki comforted her after saving her from a fairy or [[spoiler:an area of wild forest on the edge of the Delacours’ property line]].
**When Gabriel travels through time, he returns to Bethlehem so that he can draw on the power of the birthplace of Jesus, whom Gabriel explicitly thinks of as his ‘half-brother’ (while also acknowledging that Jesus is more complicated than that).
**When Gabriel [[spoiler:has to heal Hermione after Odin nearly kills her, he takes her to one of the first altars erected to Loki so that he can draw on his pagan powers to heal her to avoid drawing Heaven’s attention after some of his more blatant displays of Gabriel’s power]].
*PsychicLink: More of a spiritual link than a mental one; after [[spoiler:Hermione was captured and tortured by Odin, Gabriel bonds one of his ‘feathers’ from his True Form to her soul (even though for Gabriel this is the equivalent of pulling off a finger) so that in any future abduction attempt he will always be able to find her regardless of the wards between them]].
*RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Hermione initially turned to Loki for aid as she felt that he represented the outcasts, and mid-way through her first year at Hogwarts, aside from her canon bonds with Harry, Ron and Neville (adapted for new circumstances), [[spoiler:her first fellow acolyte to Loki is part-Veela Fleur Delacour, with Hermione becoming close friends with part-hag Millicent Bullstrode when sorted into Slytherin]].
*RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: Gabriel reflects at one point that rape is one crime he has always been opposed to even when he was indulging in his lower instincts as Loki, which led to his initial fallout with Odin.
*ReasonableAuthorityFigure: While the Veela matriarch is put out that Fleur cannot become part of the clan due to her worship of Loki superseding any claims the clan might make of her spiritually, she respects Fleur’s choice of deity to worship.
*RefugeInAudacity: Invoked when Hermione talks with [[spoiler:Ollivander]]- the first adult in the wizarding world she’s met who is as aware of the gods as she is- and asks why more people don’t know about the gods. As the adult observes, most of the time witches and wizards assume that reports of a giant serpent in the sea or a display of uncanny powers are just a more ‘standard’ sea serpent or someone displaying wandless magic rather than realise the involvement of the divine.
*RightForTheWrongReasons: Loki was correct to suspect the involvement of the supernatural when he found a case where crimes were being committed and the obvious suspects protested their innocence; he just realises too late that he was dealing with a demon possessing the suspects rather than a shapeshifter posing as them.
*RoaringRampageOfRevenge: After Gabriel spent a century trapped by Odin, once he freed his sons from their own tortures Gabriel attacked and killed most of Odin’s own sons and wives, only sparing Odin, Baldr and Thor (the first two so that they can suffer with the knowledge that what happened is their fault and Thor because Gabriel couldn’t find him). He initiates a second one when [[spoiler:Odin abducts Hermione, his children devastating Odin’s forces as they have lost power now that they aren’t worshipped as widely as they were in the past]].
*RuleOfSymbolism: When Hermione engages in a duel with Draco Malfoy, Loki’s children later note the symbolism of her summoning a black mamba to attack Malfoy, as a muggle-born attacking a pure-blood with the symbol of Slytherin is a clear display of which of them ‘deserves’ to be in this house.
*RulesLawyer: Hermione demonstrates this on her first day at Hogwarts when [[spoiler:she sits at the Gryffindor table rather than the Slytherin one at breakfast]], observing that the House students are only to sit at their House tables during a formal feast and can otherwise sit where they want to encourage inter-house unity.
*SayingTooMuch: Even Hermione apparently doesn’t realise she’s done this when Snape observes that the bracelet she’s wearing, with a devil’s trap engraved on it, is the sign of a hunter; a regular student would have asked what Snape meant, but Hermione immediately replied that she wasn’t a hunter rather than seek clarification.
*SecretTestOfCharacter:
** The fic essentially opens with a test of character where neither party was aware that there was such a test or even intended to perform one until it happened. After Gabriel punishes the bullies who drove Hermione’s sister to suicide, in a manner that makes it clear to Hermione that Loki was responsible, Gabriel is intrigued by the fact that she doesn’t ask for anything more from him despite knowing that he’s real even as she continues to leave him tribute offerings, where most people basically start constantly asking a god for favours once they know there’s someone listening. Hermione’s maturity and devotion lead to Gabriel sending her various books on the history of magic, culminating in him agreeing to teach her more about magic in person, to the extent that Hermione becomes Loki’s priestess.
**Loki eventually gives Hermione a more conventional test when he concedes to her request to accompany him on a hunt, deliberately choosing a hunt where [[spoiler:Hermione realises that the victims were killed by a Mongolian Death Worm that was relocated by a careless scientist, trusting that Hermione will realise that nothing involved in the relevant deaths is outright ‘evil’]].
**Hermione carries out her own small-scale test when [[spoiler:Fleur asks to take part in a ritual to Loki; although Hermione always has a knife on her person, she tells Fleur to collect a knife herself to prepare Fleur for the reality of the ritual they’re about to perform]].
*SeenItAll: Invoked; when Hermione starts at Hogwarts, where most of her classmates are impressed by feats such as [=McGonagall=] turning her desk into a pig and back, Hermione is somewhat ‘spoiled’ after years seeing her god reshape reality with a snap of his fingers, even if she appreciates that the smaller acts are still impressive by most peoples’ standards.
*SelectiveObliviousness: Hermione basically ignores the implications of Loki giving her a Bible with notes written in Enochian and assumes it’s just another test of her intellect, rather than ever thinking that her god started writing in Enochian as that’s his ‘native’ language.
*SemiDivine:
** While all of Loki’s children are slightly stronger than the average pagan god due to their father’s angelic state, Sleipnir is particularly powerful as Loki was so shocked to realise that ‘he’ had become pregnant that he briefly departed his vessel, with the result that Sleipnir’s foetus briefly transformed with him and retained some of that power after birth.
** Also invoked in a less direct manner with the revelation that Remus Lupin’s grandfather was Loki/Gabriel’s son Fenris. However, at the time Fenris had temporarily shed his godly status to live as a normal man and his own son was adopted anyway, so although Lupin is technically part of Gabriel’s family it doesn’t give him any aspect of Loki’s powers.
*ShippingTorpedo: Throughout Hermione’s childhood Loki’s words make it clear to all relevant parties that he considers his new priestess a daughter rather than anything else intimate, to the extent that the closest he has come to outright lying to her is to reject the idea that sex has ever been a part of rituals devoted to him as he doesn’t want Hermione to think about including sexual acts in any future rituals of devotion.
*StockNessMonster: Jörmungandr the World-Serpent spends most of his time these days living in Loch Ness, occasionally letting himself be seen in his monster form and joining the subsequent searches in his human form for a joke.
* SubordinateExcuse: A core element of Hermione and Loki’s relationship is her devotion to Loki, as while they are very close, she treats him like a god rather than someone she can just call on whenever she needs help, acting as though the greatest boon Loki can give her is just to accept her as his disciple where some of Loki’s past worshippers started calling on him for help with everything once they confirmed he was real. In return for this respect and faith, Gabriel teaches her about magic and takes her on trips even before she starts at Hogwarts, appreciating that she doesn’t expect him to do everything for her.
* SwappedRole: Hermione is so used to showing her devotion to Loki that she’s actually uncomfortable during the KneelBeforeFrodo moment mentioned above as she finds it fundamentally wrong for her god to kneel to her.
* TalkingAnimal: Loki grants Hermione the ability to communicate with animals so that she can talk with his children, most of whom assume animal forms by default. Gabriel makes it clear to Hermione that most of the animals she will talk with are only capable of talking back because they’ve been around magic so much that they’ve picked up some ‘extras’ from their exposure, so most animals only operate on instinct and are not capable of holding such conversations in turn.
*TokenHeroicOrc: Doctor Mia Vallens is specifically established as being different from normal shapeshifters as her human mother was able to teach her human values where most shapeshifters are driven by their id and commit crimes basically in the heat of the moment to satisfy their desire for pleasure.
*TookALevelInBadass: In canon, Hermione started Hogwarts with a good overall knowledge of magical theory but naturally limited practical abilities, as well as not being comfortable thinking on her feet. Here, she starts Hogwarts after spending the better part of four years as the priestess and protégé of a pagan trickster god who has given her all kinds of lessons and opportunities that even pure-blood students don’t have, allowing Hermione to even defeat three fourth-year students single-handedly.
*WorfHadTheFlu: Referenced as the reason [[spoiler:Odin has trouble when Loki/Gabriel and his family attack him to save Hermione; while he had the faith of his worshippers to draw on in the past, in the present few people believe in Odin enough to give him much power, whereas Loki/Gabriel never drew on faith to begin with (even if he’s received a recent boost from Hermione’s worship) and his children, while essentially pagan gods themselves, were never worshipped in the first place]].
*WouldHurtAChild:
**In “Lollies & Loki”, [[spoiler:Odin has no problem subjecting Hermione to the same imprisonment that he used to trap Loki]].
** In “Sweets & Studies”, Millicent Bullstrode reflects that her parents were nearly killed by her grandfather to hide the ‘shame’ she brought to the family name, and she was only spared because her father’s elder brother ordered him to provide for Millicent to humiliate him.
*YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Essentially applies to Hermione; while she mostly attributes her personal qualities to Loki’s lessons, during her Sorting the Hat reminds her that she was the one who did the research and pledged herself to Loki in the first place.
*YoungAndInCharge: Initially Hermione’s status as Loki’s priestess is symbolic more than anything, but that starts to change when [[spoiler:Fleur joins her in conducting a ritual to dedicate herself to Loki, Hermione thus affirming herself as a High Priestess of Loki with Fleur as her acolyte despite Fleur being the older of the two]].
