* CharacterDevelopment: What little we see of Liliana in Armsmaster's flashbacks imply that she's grown far more compassionate over the years.

* GenerationXerox: Emma and Taylor's relationship is a dead ringer for how Nicol and Ugin went from BashBrothers to each other's ArchEnemy, right down to [[spoiler: Emma igniting her spark in envy that Taylor has something she doesn't, just like Bolas]].

* Foreshadowing: There are a lot of hints that Liliana Vess is Taylor's mother. At the very least something about her has both Tezzeret and the Gatewatch interested.

!!Tropes:
* AdaptationalBadass:
** Taylor made bug powers a fairly potent ability in canon, and now she has the magic of a planeswalker in addition to that.
** Geralf Cecani became a planeswalker after he killed his sister.
** Emma, in this canon, has a limited ability to use mind magic. [[spoiler: And when Taylor shakes off her manipulations, ignites as a planeswalker]].
* BirdsOfAFeather: Dovin gets along fairly well with Accord.
* BlessedWithSuck: Dovin's Tinker power allows him to regain his sight, but prevents him from planeswalking, trapping him on Earth Bet.
* EngineeredHeroics: Sophia had Charlotte's Judaism leaked to some Empire goons at the school, the plan being to rescue her as Shadow Stalker, only for Taylor to get to her first and spoil that plan.
* HumanoidAbomination: [[spoiler: Whatever Sophia became after she ended up on the receiving end of Taylor's magical rampage when she kills Charlotte, it's apparently considered this by the PRT]].
* IneptMage: Before her trigger, Taylor's magical progress was agonizingly slow despite her honest best efforts.
* IronicHell: Dovin feels like being trapped on Earth Bet is this, at least at first.
* MoreThanMindControl: Emma's mental magic is weak and she lacks formal training, so she can only say things that would already affect someone and have her magic push it further, which is how she's gotten away with so much.
* PowerAtAPrice: Planeswalkers can become parahumans (or "parawalkers") via Cauldron vials (or naturally, in Taylor's case), but the shard stops them from using their abilities to planeswalk for some reason, though they can still apparently use a planar portal as normal. Dovin Baan's Thinker power allows him to see again through cameras, and cast through the line of sight from said cameras, but he doesn't consider the price he paid worth it.
* PowerParasite: Dovin notes that his shard has an apparently parasitic relationship with his spark and magic.
* PragmaticVillainy: Geralf Cecani wants to dissect Taylor, as she's the only known natural parawalker in existence, but Dovin points out that she's more valuable alive than dead, and tells him not to try anything.
* RandomlyGifted: Planeswalkers are literally about one in a million, planeswalkers that actually ignite are even rarer. Parahumans are less uncommon on Bet, but still pretty rare. Taylor is the only known natural "parawalker" in existence, all the others created by Cauldron vials.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening:
** Taylor might have ''two'' cases of this. Not only does she Trigger in the locker, but her spark apparently tried to ignite (and may have succeeded), and when Charlotte dies thanks to Shadow Stalker's arrow, she ''definitely'' ignited if she hadn't already, and only her shard kept her on Earth Bet's plane.
** Geralf ignited after killing his sister, out of the sheer joy and grief he felt from ending their rivalry for good.
** [[spoiler: Emma igniting came after Taylor realized that she was using her MoreThanMindControl powers on her and shook off her manipulations]].
* WrongContextMagic: Taylor and Ugin are repeatedly confused by how parahuman powers seem not to be magic like what they can use, but Taylor's own powers interact fairly well with her magic.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Tezzeret forced Dovin to drink a Cauldron vial after he failed a mission on Ixalan, with the implicit threat that he would kill him if he didn't, saying that he'd failed him twice already, and not to do so a third time.
