** Charlie foils Raynare's kidnapping of Asia and the extraction of her Sacred Gear, meaning that the events that lead Asia to be inducted into Rias' peerage never happen.

* WhamLine: Though it comes early in the story, Asia's unfamiliarity with the Holy Grail and there being a number of them- widespread knowledge in the Church in the Nasuverse - causes Charlie to have an OhCrap reaction as it recontextualizes everything about how this War may go.

* BlownAcrossTheRoom: The fallen angels are able to use their light spears to knock Charlie back when he blocks their attacks, sending him through entire buildings. But they completely fail to do actual damage, and he simply has to play catch up before returning the favor with interest.

* MuggingTheMonster: The fallen angels are aware of Charlie's existence and seek to lure him away so Kalawarner can deal with him in secret while Raynare and Dohnaseek extract Asia's Twilight Healing. Unfortunately for the fallen angel grunts, they picked a fight with a Servant, and a powerful one at that.

* VampiricDraining: Vampires, as per the norm, drink blood to survive. Valerie refuses to do so as a dhampyr, finding what Clan Tepes does to be revolting. [[spoiler:She's forced to do so in order to survive after her soul is damaged when her father forces her to summon the soul of an Evil Dragon with Sephiroth Graal.]]

* WhamLine: Though it comes early in the story, Asia's unfamiliarity with the Holy Grail and there being a number of them- widespread knowledge in the Church in the Nasuverse - causes Charlie to have an OhCrap reaction as it recontexualises everything about how this War may go.

** Asia and Valerie both grow by learning to hope and break out of their troubled situations. But while Asia is saved by Charlie's kindness, Vlad pushes Valerie into repaying blood with blood and taking vengeance upon her family for what they did to her.

* BeneathTheMask: As shown several times in the story, while Charlie genuinely is a nice if dorky knight, his inner musings show he's somewhat harsh on himself and is haunted by Karl der Grobe's actions in life- whom Charlie is a part of, and thus has his memories.

* BodyguardingABadass:
** Lancer's Master is Le Fay Pendragon, a powerful witch, a member of the Hero Faction, and a descendant of King Arthur and the original Morgan Le Fay.
** Archer's Master is Tobio Ikuse, owner of the Longinus Canis Lykaon and one of the five strongest humans on the planet.

* {{Irony}}: Vlad III gets summoned as his vampiric Berserker form by Valerie Tepes, the very being Vlad despises most despite sharing their surname. He outright says that had she summoned him into this form on purpose, he'd have murdered her on the spot even if it resulted in his own death.
* LetsFightLikeGentlemen: [[spoiler:Artoria Alter has every opportunity to ambush Charlie after he's already exhausted himself using multiple Noble Phantasms as part of his vengeance against the fallen angels. But she tells Le Fay that they'll be fighting on equal terms when she takes his life.]]

* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Charlie dons this look before jumping on a plane to Japan, buying a leather jacket, over a white shirt with dark slacks and combat boots. While he looks the part, he doesn't act it, as he retains his good manners when speaking to a lady. All he cares about is that he looks cool while wearing it.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Charlie's knightly instincts prevent him from refusing the requests of a DamselInDistress, resulting in him being easily led out of the Italian village and away from Asia.

* BewareTheSillyOnes: Archer is [[spoiler:Oda Nobunaga]]. As a result, she displays some of her gag tendencies from her original appearances, but also makes it painfully clear that she refuses to take orders from anyone other than her Master, showing particular contempt for devils, fallen angels, and gods. She underscores the point by continually shooting the same spot over and over while showcasing her more serious tendencies from when she was alive.
* {{Bishonen}}: Charlie's princely good looks make it a cinch for him to get a receptionist blushing and order a pair of tickets to Japan at the last minute.

* BladeOnAStick: Charlie summons his pal and paladin Astolfo's Trap of Argalia (though it technically belongs to Bradamante) to instantly sever Kalawarner's leg.

* BlueIsHeroic: Charlie's primary color motif is blue, and he's as heroic as they come.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Charlie notes that Asia's faith and work ethic exceeds some of his own knights. When Asia gasps in surprise, he reminisces about Roland's streaking incident and the time Bradamante went crazy with a shudder, but they're all heroes who enshrined their names in legend for their incredible feats.

* TheChampion: Upon his summoning, Charlie quickly realizes that Asia is a scared, lonely girl who doesn't know who she can turn to. Because of this and their Servant-Master contract, Charlie swears to be her hero who will protect her no matter what.
* TheCharmer: Charlie's {{Bishonen}} good looks and Holy Roman Emperor skill makes it easy for him to charm the receptionist at the airport into letting him buy a pair of tickets to Japan for him and Asia at the last minute. It takes him all of five seconds to get the lady blushing and soon she's gossiping to the other employees about him once she hands him the tickets.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: As the heroic king from the Song of Roland, Charlie always wants to lend a helping hand to those in need, and his dearest wish is to truly be someone's salvation rather than ruling coldly as Karl did. The moment he heard Asia's prayer for help, he came running to her aid.

** Charlie's personal sword is Joyeuse, a holy sword that can only be wielded by him through his Holy Knight Emperor skill. It's powerful enough to easily kill a Fallen Angel like Kalawarner, while its full activation, Joyeuse Ordre, is an A-Rank Anti-Army Noble Phantasm.
** Charlie is also able to use Durandal, the indestructible sword wielded by the greatest of his Twelve Paladins, Roland. Its raw destructive power collapses an entire church and levels the surrounding area to the point that it's impossible to tell that a building once stood there.
* CruelToBeKind: [[spoiler:Despite hating being a vampire as much as she does, Vlad forces Valerie to consume blood to save her life and presses her into killing Clan Tepes to finally free her from her GildedCage.]]
* CulturedBadass: As the former prince of Wallachia, Vlad III is well-versed in fine dining, architecture, and literature. He's impressed by Clan Tepes' castle despite hating the vampires themselves.
* DamselInDistress: Much like her fate in the original story, Asia is kidnapped by the fallen angels, who covet her Sacred Gear, Twilight Healing.

* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Charlemagne tells Asia to call him by his class, Saber, to avoid revealing his identity to others, especially if other Servants like him have been summoned to fight in a strange Holy Grail War. He eventually relents when he realizes that she's not comfortable with this, telling her to call him Charlie instead.

** Charlemagne and Vlad stand as polar opposites to one another.
*** Charlie takes the role of Asia's protector, being kind, affable, and encouraging while defending her from danger. Meanwhile, Vlad urges Valerie to take matters into her own hands and is aloof and demanding of her.
*** Charlie is a KnightInShiningArmor who wields a HyperspaceArsenal of holy weapons as well as the ability to produce holy light with his Mana Burst (Light) skill. Vlad has taken the form of the vampiric Dracula named after him, brutally impaling his opponents on stakes and taking on all the qualities of a Prince of Darkness.
*** Charlemagne is remembered in history as one of the Nine Worthies and a valiant defender of Christianity despite Karl being a cold control freak obsessed with world peace, while Vlad III was a valiant, if brutal defender of his home remembered in history as a monster for his bloody acts in the name of defending his home before becoming the inspiration for the vampiric Dracula.
*** Even their color schemes are opposites, as Charlie's armor is mostly white with black accents to match his dark hair, Vlad's mostly black outfit is contrasted by his light hair.

* FamousAncestor: Le Fay Pendragon is the descendant of Arthur Pendragon, better known as King Arthur of Camelot. [[spoiler:Fittingly enough, she summons an alternate version of her ancestor in Lancer.]]
* FutureMeScaresMe: In a sense. Charlie represents Karl der Grobe's childhood fantasies of being the epitome of chivalry while going on fantastical adventures as depicted in the Song of Roland. However, he still has all of Karl's memories, including his slaughter of thousands in pursuit of unifying Europe and bringing world peace. He's disgusted with Karl's actions, seeing himself as one and the same, but can act scarily like Karl when he's truly angry.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Charlie is a cheery KnightInShiningArmor who wants nothing more than to protect women and children, promote peace and understanding, and look cool while doing it. But he's one aspect of Karl der Grobe, who led a brutal conquest of most of modern Europe to be crowned the Holy Roman Emperor. After realizing that Kalawarner played him like a fiddle to lure him away from Asia, he skips the niceties and instantly severs her leg with Trap of Argalia before running her through with Joyeuse.
* HalfHumanHybrid: Valerie is the daughter of the king of the Tepes faction and a human woman. Because of this, Valerie possesses a Longinus while also having the abilities of a vampire.
* HeroesPreferSwords: Charlie prefers to use his trusty Joyeuse, a holy sword of considerable power. But he's willing to use the armaments of his paladins too, as shown when he pulls out Astolfo's Trap of Argalia against Kalawarner.
* HyperspaceArsenal: Charlie is able to call upon the signature weapons of his Twelve Paladins in addition to Joyeuse. He pulls out Astolfo's and Bradamante's Trap of Argalia as well as Roland's Durandal while fighting the fallen angels.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Even as a vampiric Berserker, Vlad the Impaler heavily prefers to kill his enemies with his trademark stakes, [[spoiler:skewering all of Clan Tepes for daring to bear his name as the creatures he despises most.]]
* InASingleBound: In an effort to catch up to the fallen angels kidnapping Asia, Charlie pours his Mana Burst (Light) skill into his legs to leap from rooftop to rooftop.
* IOweYouMyLife: At the end of ''Extella Link'', the dying Charlie revealed that he was not actually a Heroic Spirit, just a shadow of Karl der Grobe that would cease to exist once Karl died. His Master, Hakuno Kishinami, used the Regalia to turn him into a genuine Heroic Spirit that would inhabit the Throne of Heroes. The grateful Charlie promised to honor her by proving himself a worthy hero.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Vlad III's biting criticisms of Valerie's passivity are painfully true, and he rarely offers words of encouragement to her. Despite this, he cares for his Master's well-being and tries to guide her into making her own decisions and pushing her to free herself from Clan Tepes.
* KeepTheReward: When Asia heals the citizens of a small town, they thank her and pay her with food and money. Asia tries to refuse the money, but Charlie points out that they need funds to get supplies and get a flight to Japan, so she relents.
* KickTheSonOfABitch: [[spoiler:Vlad and Valerie's slaughter of Clan Tepes is horrific to behold, especially with Valerie draining every last bit of blood from Marius' body in a mad rage. But given how they caged her, used her as a tool, and showed no concern for her after her very soul is damaged by their schemes, it's hard to feel bad for them.]]
* KnightInShiningArmor: Charlie is a rather lighthearted take on this trope. He wants to be a heroic knight, but he's concerned with looking cool and is a bit of an airhead. Nevertheless, he will do the right thing if it calls for it.
* LastOfHisKind: [[spoiler:Valerie becomes the last member of Clan Tepes after murdering Marius, as Vlad had already murdered the rest of her family.]]
* LateArrivalSpoiler: The story makes no pretenses that Charlie and Karl der Grobe are anything but different aspects of the same individual, nor does it hide their connection to Velber.

* MythologyGag: Valerie's Servant is Vlad III, whose appearance is his Dracula form from the ''LightNovel/FateApocrypha'' manga adaptation. [[spoiler:After freeing herself from the Tepes Faction, she wears a white turtleneck, a long purple skirt, and black leggings to brave the Romanian cold, making her a dead ringer for [[VisualNovel/{{Tsukihime}} a certain True Ancestor]].]]
* NayTheist: The Archer of the story's Holy Grail War, [[spoiler:Oda Nobunaga]] believes in the power of humanity to rise up and solve its own problems and refuses to acknowledge the authority of Fallen Angels, Devils, or any other races.

* OutOfCharacterAlert: As a Berserker, Vlad II's Mad Enhancement is at EX. But he's perfectly lucid since his Mad Enhancement is entirely devoted to making him accept being a vampire and using its powers freely, as it would be insane for him otherwise. Even then, it's clear that he's not happy about it.
* SternTeacher: Vlad III takes a mentor role to Valerie, but he offers neither sympathy nor sweet words to make her feel better. He instead urges her to get her hands dirty if it means accomplishing her goals and nudges her into deciding things for herself for once.

* TheresNoKillLikeOverkill: Charlie could have easily finished off Raynare and Dohnaseek by running them through with his weapons, but chose to invoke their True Names to obliterate them with overwhelming firepower out of revenge for his Master's treatment.
* ThePaladin: Charlie led the order of Twelve Paladins that became the TropeNamer. Charlie himself is KnightInShiningArmor and can imbue his attacks with his Mana Burst (Light) skill for a burst of additional power and defense as well add a devastating anti-demon effect. Even fallen angels can be incinerated by the light of his holy swords.
* PretenderDiss: [[spoiler:The Artoria Alter summoned as Lancer calls the Excalibur wielded by the King Arthur of the [=DxD=] world a false sword for being broken, considering it a pale imitation of the crystallization of glory wielded by the King Arthur of her history.]]
* {{Protectorate}}: Like all Servants, Charlie swears to protect Asia no matter what. It's made more apparent because he sees first hand her desperation from fleeing from the Church, reinforcing his feelings.
* PublicDomainArtifact: The Servants are summoned to the [=DxD=] world by Valerie Tepes' Longinus, Sephiroth Graal, this world's edition of the Holy Grail. In an effort to satisfy her deepest wish to be saved from her fate, it accessed the records of the Holy Grail Wars from other timelines and created an imperfect replica to bring Servants into the world.
* RuleOfCool: Charlie's Over the Royal Road skill boosts his strength when he does things he believes are "kingly" and "cool" while weakening him if he does this that are "uncool". He's feels wounded when Asia asks him to keep up his charming, bad boy front for a bit, as it implies that his normal attitude is uncool.
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler:Valerie is nudged by her own Servant into drinking blood and slaughtering all of Clan Tepes for using her a disposable tool.]]
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Tobio Ikuse summons Oda Nobunaga as Archer. They can't stand each other because Tobio is very devout and respectful of Azazel, while Nobu frowns on religion and refuses to acknowledge Azazel.

* VegetarianVampire: As a dhampyr, Valerie isn't as reliant on blood for survival, and is disgusted by the thought of drinking it. [[spoiler:This ends after Vlad makes her drink the blood of the other vampires to ensure her survival, leaving her horrified by what she's done until she succumbs to her base instincts.]]

* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Charlie lambastes himself for failing to protect Asia from the fallen angels sent to kidnap her, only catching up to her after the fact and calling himself a failure of a Servant. Asia reassures him that he isn't a failure and that he's just him.
