* Creator/HarlanEllison claims that the ending of ''Literature/IHaveNoMouthAndIMustScream'' is intended to be happy. Sure, the narrator ends by saying the title line in utter despair, after mercy-killing every other remaining human in the world, but he's so [[UnreliableNarrator unreliable]] he hasn't realized that his actions represent the final triumph of the human spirit. The game makes it into more a BittersweetEnding, with the humans finally taking down AM and settling into the duty of being a watchdog for the [=AIs=] as they await the reawakening of the humans on the moon.

* ''Literature/Skippy Dies''. Lets see here. Two pedophiles, an adulteress, a grossly negligent friend of Skippy’s who let one of the other friends take the blame for Tom’s death and Carl get away with their various crimes not only scot-free, but even get the lives of their dreams in the process, with only the latter wallowing in self pity. And the silver lining is... two people don’t kill themselves. [[SarcasmModeYeah, real happy ending there]].

* ''Literature/AFrozenHeart'': Because we see the story from the perspective of Prince Hans, the ending, which follows that of the original Frozen film and has Hans sent back home after his plot is exposed, doesn't feel completely happy in this book. Our heroes are completely unaware they just sent him to a living Hell on Earth.

* ''Literature/TheSpeedOfDark'': Lou [[spoiler:taking the 'cure.']] It's portrayed as an act of bravery that pays off in him achieving his ambitions, but the whole book leading up to it suggests that [[spoiler:the treatment effectively erases his identity, and there really isn't anything to be cured in the first place.]] The RealLife UnfortunateImplications — particularly given the author has an autistic son — have not gone unnoticed in reviews.

* in ''Literature/{{Uprooted}}'' the two main characters get together, and the story ends with her introducing him to her mother. Except she is shown happily fixing the issues with the forest, and the text points out that he is like fine things, and wants to live in a city.
