moving to unpublished works

Added DiffLines:

A personal project of mine (quite) long in the making. ''Kaegishik'' (title subject to change) is meant to be a 2D fantasy adventure RPG game. I intend to create it with the Stencyl game creation software, released in three separate 'installments' that are separated by season (Fall, Winter, Spring) . I wanted to make a page here in TroperWorks for this because it'd be really helpful to be able to list all the tropes that are in my story (with links) !

'''Progress:''' (Feb 2010) Most of the characters are fleshed out and detailed. Storyline and politics are worked out in a solid outline. I have a very detailed (scene-by-scene) idea of how Book Fall will go, a general plan for the content that should be in Book Winter, and much of Book Spring's development will wait until I Get There, but I do know how the story will start and end. A bunch of personal concept art/sketches and notes. Working on the actual script and need to get on creating sprites/tilesets/graphics and official character art. Music will likely come last. Compilation into game-form will be left for when I have a good amount of raw content to work with. I'm working on this in bits and pieces on the side, not actively daily.

''Kaegishik'' is a story about a group of heroes from various origins that band together to save their nations from a deeply-hidden conspiracy.

The story takes place on a small island, home to two nations that had split in a civil war 50 years previous. There is an oriental aesthetic to these nations (leaning on Korean). Rather than a threat that swallows the whole world or the largest country on the planet, like many fantasy stories, I wanted to try my hand at taking a seemingly small and inconsequential conflict (like many real conflicts in ignored countries IRL) and really zoom in to ''involve'' the player so that it doesn't matter that this little country is a barely registered dot on the actual world map. Being Korean-American myself, I also wanted to make the main setting very Asian (but not Japanese, it's overdone), instead of just having an 'exotic Asian village' detour. An important foreign nation is the country of Vaseta, in the large continent northward. Vaseta is a large and powerful cosmopolitan nation based much more on the typical European aesthetic, with imperialistic and controlling tendencies.

The Twilight War, as it was named, was a war declared by the northern half of the country headed by the rebellious princess of the royal family. After decades of slowly becoming more oppressed by the conceited nobility on the southern side, along with an onslaught of plain bad luck, they became sick of it. The princess fell in love with a Vasetian nobleman, and through that gained the Vasetian military support, winning the war.

The northern nation, Haetsal, is hilly, agricultural, somewhat folksy, and specializes in medicines and herbs. As of their turn to independence, it has become custom for the first daughter to become the ruler of the nation, and they have become more militaristic. Vasetian culture, finally allowed freely into Haetsal, has become a floodgate, swamping the people with their new influence. The southern nation, Talbit, is more mountainous and colder, focusing more on mining, rare spices and silks, and fine ingredients for magic. They are considered the 'rich', snobby side of the country, seating the original royal family and its bloated noble court. However, with the loss of their source of agriculture and medicine, they've been suffering from sickness and hunger, and their pride and distrustfulness has made them turn further inward.

Book Fall introduces many of the main characters and sets the stage with lots of exposition and foreshadow. The Haetsalian Prince Jungsu is kidnapped, twice, it seems from people with the same hidden motives working together. The Talbitian Crown Prince Haneul manages to become involved with both Jungsu and his twin sister Crown Princess Sunjung, and the suspicious activities around them don't go unnoticed. The Book ends with the conclusion of a strange extremist hostage-riot that also seems somehow connected to the hidden issue.

Book Winter hails the declaration of war. Talbit accuses Haetsal of kidnapping their Princess Mihi.

The six playable characters are:
* '''Minki''': Rogue - A cryptic old woman who is quite limber for her age. She was originally a member of the opposing faction, but turned traitor for reasons unknown. Her dry sense of humor makes it hard to tell when she's being serious or not.
* '''Sunjung''': Fighter - The mixed-blood Crown Princess of Haetsal. In looks, voice, and actions many mistake her for a young man. She has a strong Vasetian influence and is proud, honorable, and aggressive. She can seem uptight, and is very protective of her twin brother.
* '''Jungsu''': Item-User/Archer - A Prince of Haetsal. Opposite his twin, he's often mistaken for a girl for his pretty and gentle demeanor. He is shy and lacks confidence, but very kind-hearted and patient. He's great with herbs and medicines, and likes spending time with children and elders.
* '''Haneul''': Mage - The Crown Prince of Talbit. An arrogant if very intelligent mage and scholar. Though quite well-read and ambitious, he lacks any trust or empathy for others. His sharp tongue, cold cynicism, and shameless selfishness make him insufferable.
* '''Mihi''': Buff - A Princess of Talbit. A sweet and bubbly young lady that is the picture of courtly grace and beauty. She is naive, shut away from the hardships of life. She loves parties, socializing, dance, music, poetry, and art. She is gullible and easily moved by her emotions.
* '''Dei''': Healer - A red-robe apprentice priestess of the Cirenasc church. Seems to be a bit dull but is just absent-minded. Constantly has his head in the clouds, he can make some very peculiar comments. Though he doesn't immediately seem it, he is genuinely devoted to his religion and actually quite bright. He has a playful side that can be easy to mistake for weirdness.

I'm pretty much adding any trope I see that counts while troping normally on my own. I'll organize the list and add reasons/explanations for each as I see fit. This series will provide examples of:

* AllLovingHero: Mihi, while a spoiled princess, has grown up surrounded by beauty and positive vibes and reflects that upbringing with her whole being. Upon realizing that the people under her do not live such a charmed life, she feels obligated to try and help them. Her faith in people and naivete is not to be underestimated; it gives her an amazing capacity for forgiveness and personal involvement with people she's just met. She can find it hard to understand truly terrible acts though.
* BigBad: Princess Youngil. Ultimate leader of the White Moon group that's been pulling all the strings.
* TheChessMaster: Princess Youngil, a classic example. She's been playing this game for at least two ''decades'', kids. Eyes and ears everywhere, and friends from all corners.
* [[AncientConspiracy Not-So-Ancient Conspiracy]]: Princess Youngil, leader of the White Moon Group, has been scheming to take over the throne, start a war, unite two nations, and drive off a foreign power for decades. Suffice it to say that this ambitious plan has been slowly carried out behind-the-scenes for almost as long.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Again, Princess Youngil. Popular and beloved by both the common people of Talbit and the nobles of the court. She is graceful, intelligent, charismatic, and wise.
* AntiVillain: Good luck finding one that isn't. No, or almost no, antagonist is actually outright evil, and most actually have good intentions and likeable personalities.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Youngil and the White Moon wish to reunite their broken nations, stopper the pressuring tide from the imperialistic country Vaseta, and improve the decaying situation of poverty, sickness, and discontent among the people with strong and compassionate leadership. They intend to do this by employing blackmail, assassination, inciting rumors and riots, kidnapping, and starting a ''war''. Among other tasks.
* XanatosSpeedChess: When the main party starts screwing things up for the White Moon, they certainly exemplify their flexibility.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: These are starting to repeat themselves. XD
* DirtyBusiness:
* NecessarilyEvil: Many members of the White Moon don't deny that when they do evil things such as start a war, assassinate innocent royals, or plan to kill a group of innocent women and children for their cause, that these actions are terrible and unforgivable...
* ShootTheDog: But someone's gotta' do it. Can also apply to Haneul and Minki, who are both cynical and/or experienced enough to make the hard choice.
* DivideAndConquer: Youngil plans to weaken the positions of both Haetsal and Talbit by getting them to declare war against each other.
* RedOniBlueOni: Sunjung and Haneul, fullstop. Sunjung is temperamental, passionate, active, and down-to-earth--red oni. Haneul is cold, intellectual, passive, and high-class--blue oni.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Dei, while precocious and with the occasional surprising remark, is all-around quite innocent and naive.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: The people still die, the war still starts, and the main party are put through the wringer, but it all ends on everything turning out (mostly) for the best.
* DistressedDamsel: Mihi is already introduced to the plot as a 'kidnapped princess'. But just the once.
* JamesBondage: Jungsu, at least twice in a row!
* NeutralFemale: Inverted. Jungsu is pretty useless whenever he gets kidnapped.
* TheLoad: Jungsu, at least for Book Fall. Weaponless and incapable of attacking, not to mention just plain weak, and you aren't allowed to take him off the battle party. Sure gets kidnapped and cowers a lot.
* NonActionGuy: Also Jungsu, for Book Fall.
* TookALevelInBadass: Jungsu takes up a bow and arrow and proves to be quite skilled at it from Book Winter and onwards. He also starts gaining a bit more conviction with his newfound action skills. Hopefully gaining some ''actual'' game levels too.
* HonorBeforeReason: Sunjung, to a reasonable extent. Though practical enough, she can also be pretty simple-minded and let her temper get the better of her. She doesn't like turning tail, hiding, or taking insults lying down!
* ShadesofConflict/White and Gray Morality: Nobody is actually evil, not even the 'villains'. Everybody is trying to accomplish the same good things for the people around them, just in different ways.
* TheSmartGuy: Haneul is the mage of the party, well-studied bookworm and intellectual.
* TheBigGuy: Sunjung is the hardest hitter of the party, being a pure melee fighter with solid Power and Defense stats. She wields a sword.
* TheChick: Jungsu and Mihi. Emotional, feminine, kind-hearted and always trying to keep the peace.
* TeamMom: Minki is the oldest of the main party by a longshot, wise and patient. It helps that she's been keeping secret watch on all of them since the day they were born.
* TagalongKid: Dei really shouldn't be on this wild and dangerous mission, being a squishy priest and a little kid, but he doesn't seem very intent on leaving.
* TheHeart: Mihi and Aecha. While Jungsu tries to keep peace between the more volatile members of the group (:cough:SunjungandHaneul:cough:), it is Mihi that actually winds up speaking and feeling most passionately about the suffering people around the party and how they should ''do something about it''. The others can play this to a certain extent, but not to which the compassionate but completely naive young princess does. Aecha plays this for her own group, being very eloquent and passionate about the reason she fights.
* TheMedic: Jungsu and Dei. Jungsu's a whiz with medicines and herbs, and Dei heals people for a living.
* HealingHands: Dei.
* WhiteMagic: Unlike Jungsu, who heals through more mundane methods, Dei uses magic directly from the power of the stars as part of the practices of his divine faith, Cirenasc.
* BigEater: Sunjung is not the best picture of royal elegance at a dinner table.
* TheHedonist: Arlen could be counted, being a character with virtually no real goals or aspirations in life other than to score girls, show off, party, and live the high life as per his charmed childhood.
* ActionGirl: Sunjung, Mihi, Minki, Aecha, Chun-hae, Young-il, etc., just a lot of females. To varying degrees.
* NeverMessWithGranny: Minki may be just about one of the most badass fighters in the game, starting at a whopping Level 7 (out of 10) . Growing up in the middle of a war, being trained by an elite spy, and working faithfully with the White Moon group all the way up to working directly under the BigBad as The Original Dragon could have something to do with it.
* OldMaster: Minki, see above.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Various examples, including four in the main party.
* LadyOfWar: I'm not sure Sunjung counts, as the 'feminine grace' doesn't quite suit her. But her mother the Empress, Princess Youngil, and Mihi (sort of) would suit this trope.
* FallenPrincess: After being kidnapped, Mihi doesn't have much time to primp herself in front of a mirror and play tea party with the other noble girls.
* PrincessClassic: Mihi is beautiful, elegant, sings, dances, and is sweet as a swan.
* Royal Brat: Haneul. Pity the fool that has to work under this jerk of an ingrate. Arrogant, spoiled, and self-centered.
* RoyalBlood: Lots of it.
* KissingCousins: Haneul and Jungsu, and maaaybe Mihi and Daehyun. They all share great-grandparents, since they're part of the royal families. Haneul and Jungsu kiss at least once, and there's romantic subtext between Mihi and Daehyun.
* OfferedTheCrown: Instead of electing one of the four possible RoyalBlood heirs to take charge of the nation, Mihi makes the decision to hand the position to Aecha. She believes Aecha is more suited to the role than any of them could ever be.
* ModestRoyalty: Many of the Haetsalian royalty and nobility are more humble and hands-on than Talbitian court, including Jungsu and Sunjung. More practical clothes, less extravagant trappings or architecture, more approachable, etc..
* SpoiledSweet: Mihi. Rather than turn her into an ungrateful demanding brat, having no care in the world has helped retained the fascination and dreamy whimsy of childhood.
* StandardRoyalCourt: Talbit and Haetsal?
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: Charis suits this best. Gentle, quiet, and she'll heal anyone who needs it in the vicinity. Really, she's only with the White Moon out of pure chance.
* HeroWithAnFInGood: Haneul is ''trying'' to do what he thinks is right, but he's such a cold, cynical, unempathetic bastard.
* TheDragon: Minki.
* MayDecemberRomance: Not really told in-game, but Minki had a romantic relationship with a much older man soon after becoming pregnant with her daughter. This was the same man that taught her all his spying skills, from when he was an agent of the intelligence group that worked under the then-royal family.
* IfItsYouItsOkay: Arlen is completely straight, loves the ladies and can't get enough of them. Really! But Jungsu... is his 'special' exception.
* Casanova: The ladies love Arlen.
* PluckyComicRelief: Arlen, for the White Moon group. Witty, outgoing, and laid-back with a healthy sense of humor.
* LadyKillerInLove: Arlen obviously has some Unresolved Issues with Jungsu. Whether it fits this trope...
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Sunjung and Dei. Good luck being able to tell their actual genders just by looking at them.
* StupidSexyFlanders: Sunjung and Jungsu. Sunjung, the handsome and dashing exotic swordsman, and respectful to women to boot. Jungsu, pretty and sweet, and can even heal you in sickness with gentle medical prowess. Some god somewhere made a terrible mistake with these twins...
* Bifauxnen: Sunjung.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Jungsu
* SamusIsAGirl:
* TheReveal:
* TheLadette: Sunjung
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: Sunjung, Jungsu, and Dei, all the time. Sunjung and Dei both crossdress, Dei actively pretends to be a girl during Book Fall, and Jungsu just looks way too girly. Sunjung's and Jungsu's personalities don't help the misunderstandings either.
* ChickMagnet: Sunjung is the unfortunate receiver of many female admirers, especially those that don't exactly know her very well...
* DudeMagnet: Jungsu on the other hand might be a bit more appreciative if they still liked him ''after'' they learned his real gender...
* AllThereInTheManual: Lots of extra story content, like backstory on Minki, Youngil, Arlen, Aecha, and pretty much all the main characters, are planned to be shared or expanded on in other medium, such as writing or comics. Lots.
