Burl Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 – April 14, 1995) was an American actor and musician.
Ives began his career as an itinerant singer and guitarist, eventually launching his own radio show, ''The Wayfaring Stranger'', which popularized traditional folk songs, later successfully crossing over into country music in the [[TheSixties 1960s]].
Ives was also a popular film actor through the late [[TheForties 1940s]] and TheFifties. His film roles included parts in ''Film/SoDearToMyHeart'' (1948) and ''Theatre/CatOnAHotTinRoof'' (1958), as well as the role of Rufus Hannassey in ''Film/TheBigCountry'' (1958), for which he won an UsefulNotes/AcademyAward for Best Supporting Actor.
