* BerserkButton: Do not harm Kaito. Do not insinuate that you're going to harm Kaito. Do not remind Haruto of an event in which Kaito was harmed. He ''will'' find a way to utterly wreck you.

* DesignatedVictim: Though he often finds ways to assist in getting himself out of these situations. [[spoiler:Expresses guilt about this (and the fact that Kaito and Yuma often endanger themselves to help him) in episode 71.]]

* LivingEmotionalCrutch: Started off as just being this to Kaito, since whenever he goes missing Kaito tends to go into something resembling berserker rage until he's returned. [[spoiler:As of episode 72-73, he also acts like this to Dr. Faker to a degree, making him the emotional crutch of the Tenjo family in general.]]

* MentalWorld: The house where he and Kaito lived as children, which he drags Yuma into several times to ask for his help in saving Kaito [[spoiler:or saving his own mind from Tron's influence]].

* NowLetMeCarryYou: His speech to Tron in episode 43 demonstrates this fairly well.

* PutOnABus: Justified, given that there's no way in hell that Kaito would want him involved in the Interdimensional War again.

A robot who assists Kaito in Numbers hunting through the use of a variety of abilities, most prominent of which is the power to stop time.

* VileVillainLaughableLackey: While Kaito himself was an AntiVillain at worst, only coming into conflict with Yuma due to them both collecting Numbers for different ends, he was played as a deadly serious threat due to [[YourSoulIsMine the way he takes them]] and his general demeanor toward his prey (including Yuma). Orbital 7, on the other hand, was anything but threatening even back then.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: He goes through this after meeting Obomi. (Which, unfortunately, leads to an embarrassing situation when he thinks Yuma is abusing her.)

The mayor of Heartland, Mr. Heartland works with Dr. Faker and is Kaito's handler. He is the holder of a fake Number card created by Don Thousand: No. 1: Infection Baal Zebul.

* FauxAffablyEvil: The charismatic face for Heartland City, who happens to be a stooge for Faker and his mad schemes. It's hard to tell how genuine his niceness is, though Droite's flashback has him remaining disturbingly cheery while putting duelists through brutal training, suggesting it's largely a facade, moreso in the dub where his interactions with Kite drip with smarminess. The fact that he's willing to use what are essentially child soldiers as followers should say a lot about the kind of person he really is, emphasized in Kaito's flashback where he basically coerces Kaito into working for him if he wants to see Haruto again, all while remaining disturbingly polite and cordial.

* BerserkButton: [[spoiler:Pretty much anything concerning Kaito or Kaito interrupting him/not acting the way he wants.]]

* TheFinalTemptation: [[spoiler:Not truly a straight example – as Yuma is wide awake – but right before Yuma duels Semimaru he makes an offer like this that he sees as a way for Yuma to avoid trouble, especially now that Astral is missing and presumed dead. If Yuma simply gives him the Numbers, he’ll release the hostages without a fight, and even tell Semimaru to delete everyone’s memories of Astral, forever, making their life the way it was before the fighting ever began. Still, Yuma can’t make himself agree, seeing those memories as priceless. (Clearly, Heartland didn’t understand the bond between them any more than Jin did.)]]
* FixingTheGame: [[spoiler:He tries to rig the duel between III and Yuma and Semimaru, halving their life points and adding it to Semimaru's.]]

* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Despite their name, the ''Infection Flies'' are not Insect Type Monsters but Fiends. [[spoiler:This alludes to Heartland using them to summon his ace monster, Baal Zebul.]]

* WellIntentionedExtremist: An ImpliedTrope, ''and'' a subversion. He ''thinks'' he's this, and ''admits'' he's one. In fact, [[spoiler:before his duel with Kaito]], he quotes the famous quote on the Trope page by Bernard of Clairvaux almost word-for-word. However, it's doubtful most would agree he does what he does for anything other than greed and lust for power.

The man at the center of the Faker faction. The mad scientist who controls Heartland City from behind the scenes; he created the Photon series to hunt Numbers, as well inventing the D-Gazer contacts and Duel Anchor that Kaito, Gauche, Droite and the Tron brothers use. Bears a mysterious grudge against Xyz Monsters in general, and has bone to pick with the Astral World. The main antagonist to the first three seasons of Zexal. His deck theme is "Garbage," and based on getting out two main Number monsters; No. 53: Fake-Body God, Heart-eartH and No. 92: Fake-Body God Dragon, Heart-eartH Dragon.

* ArchnemesisDad: [[spoiler:To Kaito, once his plan is revealed and after Kaito becomes one of Yuma's allies. During the showdown pitting Faker against Kaito, Shark, and Yuma, Kaito [[CallingTheOldManOut calls him out on not trusting his own son with the whole truth despite everything he did for him.]]]]
* BigBadEnsemble: With Tron and [[spoiler:unknown to both, Vector.]]

* EvilGenius: Most of Kaito's cool toys and the Sphere Field [[spoiler:and, by extension, the garbage cannon destroying Astral World]] were Faker's inventions.

* HeelFaceDoorSlam: [[spoiler:Once he lays things bare in a MotiveRant and begins to make amends with Kaito, seemingly about to surrender the Duel against him, Yuma, and Shark, Vector possesses him and forces him to keep Dueling instead. Fortunately, he's freed upon Vector's defeat.]]

* LoopholeAbuse: In the three-on-one duel against Yuma, Kaito, and Shark during the SeasonFinale of season one, he starts the duel with 12,000 Life Points (triple the normal amount) while his opponents share a pool of 4,000. (And this is ''his'' condition.) While it seems fair on the surface, it is not; it gives him a ''huge'' advantage. (If he had let his three opponents each use an ''individual'' Life Point total of 4,000, ''then'' him starting with triple the amount might have been fair. That being said, his opponents essentially get to take three turns in a row before he gets his next one, which ''may'' have balanced things out somewhat if his Numbers weren't so absurdly powerful that he rips through their LP even on their turn.)
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:His love for Haruto, his son, has led him to commit several horrific acts over the course of the series. His betrayal of Byron and Kazuma, collecting the Numbers Cards, and the attempted destruction of the Astral World were all for the sake of keeping Haruto alive.]]

* OneWingedAngel: Turns into a gigantic cyborg to open his duel with Yuma, Kaito, and Shark.

* TheReveal: Fans were more then a little surprised to find out he's actually [[spoiler:Kaito and Haruto's father.]]

** [[spoiler:That actually turns out to be a lie, but surprisingly, this trope is still played straight. The truth is that Faker made a deal with the Barian World; in exchange for keeping Haruto alive, Faker would destroy the Astral World]].

* XanatosGambit: [[spoiler:While Kaito's loss against Tron was unexpected and surprised him, it still didn't affect his plans. His real goal was for as many Numbers as possible to be collected so that they could be used in the Sphere Field, the arena for the WDC finals which collects their energy for his own use. With Tron taking Kaito's Numbers, nothing actually changed.]]

A hot-blooded duelist and one of Heartland's assistants, he originally takes the role of administrator for the WDC. However, his duel with Yuma causes him to enter the tournament in order to settle the score with him. His first deck shown is a "Bounzer" deck, with the ace monster being Photon Strike Bouncer. His real deck is a "Heroic" deck, with the ace monster Heroic Champion - Excalibur.

* ButtMonkey: At times, especially after swearing he will be the only one to beat Yuma/Astral.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Droite.
* ChildSoldiers: [[spoiler:A flashback he has in episode 59 strongly suggests Mr. Heartland took him and Droite in at a young age.]]

* FriendlyEnemy: A bit of a side effect due to his mindset of being TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou, but Gauche seems to be warming up to Yuma. So much so that [[spoiler:after losing to him in episode 59, he gives him Heroic Champion - Excalibur.]]
* HeroicSecondWind: His ace monster can't attack unless Gauche is about to lose, but when it can attack, it can double its attack to 4000, meaning it can take out almost anything it's aimed at. He also has a card called Heroic Chance which doubles a Heroic monster's attack, which he used in a pinch.

* HonorBeforeReason: Opts to restore Yuma's life points to 4000 so they can have a duel on equal ground despite it being suggested that Mr. Heartland rigged the duel coaster to give Gauche an easy win.

* PlatonicLifePartners: With Droite.
* RedOniBlueOni: Gauche is the red to Droite's blue.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: After fighting Yuma once, and discovering that Yuma has the "original Number", Gauche makes it his mission to beat Yuma and one-up Kaito.

* VillainyFreeVillain: In his initial showing against Ura, he comes across like this: nothing about what he's doing is actually ''wrong'' (he's just punishing Ura for being a cheater, and even Yuma admits that Ura deserves to get disqualified); he's just being very rude and extreme about it.

* HenshinHero: As part of his "friend to all children" image.

One of Heartland's assistants alongside Gauche, Droite is quite calm, cool and collected, and administrates the WDC alongside Gauche. She joins the tournament with him, however, and eventually shows her own motivations for doing so. Her deck theme is the "Butterfly Assassin" monsters, with her ace being Photon Butterfly Assassin, and it runs on a combination of lockdown and burn tactics that allow her low-ATK monsters to deal a lot of damage.

* ChildhoodFriends: With Gauche.

* IceQueen: Her usual demeanor, but she does have a hidden softer side towards Kaito.
* IOweYouMyLife: To Kaito who saved her once, which is why she's been so protective of him.

* SugarAndIcePersonality: Most notably in episode 50, where she shows a lot of concern about Kaito when she finds out he's slowly dying from his Photon Change.

* VillainousFriendship: If she and Kaito can be considered villains at all, they would be considered Type III. She holds a Type One with Gauche, her [[PlatonicLifePartners Platonic Life Partner]].
* WeakButSkilled: Her monsters are lacking in attack and her ace monsters are a bit weak, but she uses many spells and traps to make them very dangerous.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Not as drastic as Gauche, but 19 year-old Droite looks like she could easily be a matured woman in her twenties.

* BeatTheCurseOutOfHim: In the team duel between her and Yuma against Alito and a {{Brainwashed}} Gauche, she tried this to cure Gauche, powering up her monster to incredible levels and attacking his monster, which had an effect that dealt Battle Damage to both of them, but kept Gauche from losing all his Life Points. She didn't fully cure him, but he remembered his true fighting style, and switched to fighting offensively, letting Yuma win. (As a bonus, this beat Alito's true memories ''into'' him.)
* TheComicallySerious: At one point it is imagined that she is wearing the same costume as Gauche. It is hilarious.
* DefrostingIceQueen: After becoming Gauche's manager, she is more noticeably friendly towards other people.
