* BothSidesHaveAPoint: "The Whacko" acknowledges that the secessionists had a very understandable grudge against the federal government for basically abandoning them and saving all the "important" people instead. But, as is pointed out several times throughout the book, there simply weren't any good options (at least not by the time the Great Panic started), and the resources and manpower needed to actually save ''everyone'' just weren't there.

But, as is pointed out several times throughout the book, there simply weren't any good options (at least not by the time the Great Panic started), and the resources and manpower needed to actually save ''everyone'' just weren't there. This same issue came up when the federal government crushed them - the secessionists, again, had very good reason to want to split off from the country that left them to die, but the government couldn't exactly be expected to let the whole thing fall apart if they wanted to rebuild any semblance of pre-War America.

[[folder:Crusoes and LAMOE's]]
The scattered survivors across the United States who managed to survive by themselves throughout the War, outside the Blue Zones and other larger survivor enclaves. Divided into two distinct groups - those who were happy to be rescued when the U.S army came rolling through and those who... weren't.
----
* CrazySurvivalist: The LAMOE's, almost to a man. If they weren't crazy before the ZombieApocalypse, they sure as hell were now.
* FunWithAcronyms: LAMOE - '''L'''ast '''M'''an '''O'''n '''E'''arth.
* NonIndicativeName: The LAMOE's or "The Last Man On Earth" weren't always the last people in their area, or even always men for that matter. The name was used to identify survivors who saw the apocalypse as an opportunity to either carve out a little territory for themselves with no one left to tell them what to do, or lord over a tiny group of other survivors as king, positions they didn't want to give up when it turned out they weren't the last living people on Earth.
* ShoutOut: The Crusoes were named after the titular main character of ''Literature/RobinsonCrusoe'', identifying them as civilized survivors who's just been stranded away from society and wanted to rejoin it, in comparison to their vicious LAMOE counterparts.
* SoleSurvivor: Usually the only people in their immediate area who weren't dead, undead, or had already fled somewhere else.

[[folder:The Secessionists]]
Survival enclaves who declared secession from the United States after the government retreated beyond the Rocky Mountains, the most infamous of these being the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming.

But, as is pointed out several times throughout the book, there simply weren't any good options (at least not by the time the Great Panic started), and the resources and manpower needed to actually save ''everyone'' just weren't there.
* CrazySurvivalist: A much more organized version of the typical LAMOE (Last Man On Earth) survivors the military encountered during the reconquest.
* DividedStatesOfAmerica: The Black Hills attempted this in the aftermath of the Great Panic, declaring their territory it's own nation. [[CurbStompBattle It didn't last long.]]
* ProperlyParanoid: All the paranoid survivalist fantasies about the "evil" federal government more or less came true once shit really hit the fan, though it was a move of desperation rather than malevolence.

* PoorCommunicationSkills: One of the most important jobs of Radio Free Earth was combating misinformation, especially concerning the zombies, as rumors and plain wishful thinking about cures or the zombies being anything but walking corpses flourished long into the outbreak. Part of this involved translating accurate information into local languages, which having an international staff helped with.

to:

* PoorCommunicationSkills: ForcedToWatch: Or rather, forced to ''listen''; the radio crew had no way of actually helping anyone other than recieving heir transmissions, often from survivors deep inside infection zones with no hope of rescue, with many of them being overrun and eaten by zombies mid-broadcast.
* ItCanThink: One of the rumors Radio Free Earth had the toughest time combating - many people simply wouldn't accept that their zombified loved ones were gone (the fact that their corpses still moved around didn't help), and had to be repeatedly hit over the head with the AwfulTruth.

* VoiceOfTheResistance: While the zombies weren't a standard invading enemy, Radio Free Earth still served as part of a resistance, focusing on preventing the zombie plague from spreading further and helping civilians survive rather than beating the zombies directly.

* CoolOldGuy: His age hasn't slowed him down. He was already a grandfather when he encountered one of the earliest cases of ThePlague, got a message to his daughter to get out of the country ASAP before being arrested by the Chinese government, ''escaped'' from prison, and is now chairman of the security council of Greater Chongqing. * ReasonableAuthorityFigure: By god he tried, but the game was stacked against him from the start; he and his company were supposed to be screening survivors for infection, but not only was his platoon of tanks ill-equipped for examinations (they had no medical personnel, no barricades to prevent traffic, nor even dogs to sniff out infected), but the survivors themselves were beyond reason, with imagined safety on one side of the bridge and certain death on the other. And yet he still tried to screen the survivors for infection, because those were his orders, [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome which not only failed miserably but resulted several casualties among his men]].

* EliteZombie: Downplayed, but as mentioned by Todd Wanio, Quislings were- in practical terms- zombies that didn't freeze solid in colder environments like actual undead; and while they couldn't turn anyone with their bites, they could still cause lethal staph infections due to oral bacteria.
* ImplacableMan: The only physical reaction a Quisling is reported to show outside of seeking prey is that their pupils still contract when light is shone into them. Beyond that, they simply don't react; not to harsh weather, not to their own pain or discomfort, and tragically not even to being devoured by actual zombies.

* TheQuisling: Even sharing the name, Quislings are survivors who have been DrivenToInsanity by the horrors and constant danger around them that they're begun mimicking the zombies in some pathetic, last-ditch shot at survival, including attacking other survivors to eat them. This just served to get them killed faster, as zombies instinctively know the difference between living and dead.
