A bicycle courier who lived in Deptford, London with his parents. While running a delivery to an address somewhere across the city, a car cut across Jim's bike and caused him to crash, putting him into a coma. 28 days later, Jim woke up and the entire city was empty due to an outbreak of the Rage Virus.

* RatedMForManly: He obviously views himself in this vein. The reality is that he's nothing more than a sadistic bully and [[spoiler: he even gets demolished in an actual fight with Jim, an untrained civilian who had been in a coma just prior to the events of the film.]]

* AffablyEvil: West comes across as very genial, reasonable and well-composed. Ultimately, however, this turns out to not be the case.

* WantsAPrizeForBasicCommonDecency: During the first Infected attack on the manor, Jones is so astonished that he actually managed to kill one of the invading horde - under circumstances in which it'd be hard ''not'' to score a confirmed kill - that he stops to tell Mitchell about it. Mitchell is not amused.

* EvilCounterpart: Like Frank and Jim's father, West is a very protective TeamDad figure for his army command. Unlike Frank and Jim's father, he considers raping women the only way to go forwards.

His plan involved systematically raping women so they can repopulate the planet but the protagonists were able to stop him and his soldiers. In the comics, Selena points out that it didn't take long for West to conjure up this plan and he was likely just looking for an excuse to fulfil his misogynistic agenda.]]

* TokenGoodTeammate: He's the only soldier with a definite moral compass [[spoiler:and to the end of his life tries to protect Selena and Hannah from West and his men and sacrifices his life to save Jim so that he has a chance to save the girls from the soldiers who have gone AWOL and will most likely be remembered as the hero who saves Jim, Hannah and Selena from the monsters the soldiers have become in the final moments of their lives]].

* {{Kick the Son of a Bitch}}: [[spoiler:When Mailer gets free by Jim, he kills Bedford and Bell along with Clifton, which would be horrific enough to make people feel bad for them, except that those two agreed with West’s plan to have any female survivors raped and in Bedford’s case he was clearly going to enjoy doing it. Mailer kills West by dragging him inside the manor and beating him up which would also be horrific as well, but West was the one who got him chained up and got Farrell murdered because he did not want to go along with the plan and also just shot Jim for killing all of his men even though it was self defence as his men were going to rape Selena and Hannah.]]

* {{It Can Think}}: Mailer though filled with the rage virus does seem to be in more control of his actions than most of the infected [[spoiler:as after he gets free, he decides to get revenge on West and the other soldiers for chaining him up then leaving him to be exposed to the elements along with the possibility that he like Farrell did not agree with West to have any female survivors raped as after killing him, he only screams instead of going after Jim and the girls clearly relived of finally getting even with West.]]

* FatalFlaw: Arrogance: [[spoiler: Bedford has got Mailer cornered in the kitchen but instead of killing him straightaway, he decide to taunt him by saying what's he going to do now which Mailer gives out a small smile knowing he infected Clifton so he runs towards him which is then Bedford saw Clifton and realises he made a mistake as he gets attacked by him and gets dragged by both Mailer and Clifton to the kitchen table screaming and begging as they kill him.]]

* WhatHaveIBecome: [[spoiler: After he gets infected by Mailer, he goes into the bathroom which he then sees himself on the mirror and for a few minutes saw that he has now become infected like him and everyone else but seeing that he agreed with West's plan in the first place that led him to be this, he decides to embrace what he is now so he leaves the bathroom and find the other soldiers to kill since like him they don't deserve to live after everything he and they have done.]]
