* NotSoAboveItAll: His personal life issues hardly need mentioning, but throughout both movies, his skill as a pilot has been the one thing nobody around him has never questioned. In the first movie, his instructors and classmates all have nothing for praise for his skill, that it's only been his temperment and habits that get him in trouble, and it's only after Goose's death that he questions his sense of immortality. And in the climactic dogfights in the second movie, after it being shown that in the intervening decades that he's spent his entire career chasing ever more dangerous stunts, he finds himself in a situation that his piloting skills along can't seem to get him out of, being stuck in an antiquated fighter against top-of-the-line hardware. While enemy planes get the bead on him, he loses his cool and is at times frustrated, angry, and even ''terrified''.
