!!The Underground
[[folder:In General]]
!!''General Tropes''
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/underground.png]]
!!! '''Appearances:''' ''Series/DoomPatrol2019''

The Underground is the internal representation of Jane's mind. It houses representations of each of her personalities.
----
* AdaptationalJerkass: Almost all of the different personalities have become more hostile than their comic counterparts to at least some degree.
** Personalities such as Driver 8, Baby Doll, and several others all liked Robotman. Black Annis even stated he was the first guy she knew that she didn't want to castrate. Here, most of them don't really seem to care for Cliff with a couple of exceptions.
*** Driver 8 in the comics was more than willing to let Cliff help when Jane retreated into the Underground. Here, she turns him over to the other personalities to have him locked up.
** Miranda of the comics was only ever implied to be Kay Challis's original defense mechanism, existing to live life without the burden of remembering Kay's sexual abuse. Here, Miranda is fully aware of what Kay experienced and even threatens to murder Kay's mom.
** The personalities in the comics never had a problem with Crazy Jane joining the Doom Patrol, whereas here they gradually begin to detest the team and view them as a crutch Jane's relying on.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: While a lot of the personalities seem friendly, being kind doesn't have to be a part of it.
* BigSisterInstinct / MamaBear: A lot of the personalities, even if they fight with one another agree that their sole purpose is to protect Kay in the Underground.
* CripplingOverspecialization: The main reason why Jane is kept as the primary personality. Each other personality is entirely centered around a specific task or behavior, leaving them incapable or untrustworthy of handling the everyday pressures of normal life, let alone the abject insanity the Doom Patrol have to face regularly. This ultimately results in their attempt to imprison Jane and take control failing spectacularly.
* DoesNotLikeMen: According to both Jane and Hammerhead, The majority of Kay's persona's harbors deep mistrust, if not outright hatred for men. With so far only one or two of them being shown not to share this sentiment. This bias was likely due to the psychological abuse that Kay endured under her father that created them in the first place.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Whenever any of the personalities appear, their first appearances and actions establishes who these personalities are and what they do.
* {{Hypocrite}}: They often accuse Jane of not considering how her actions affect the others. However, they have almost complete LackOfEmpathy for anyone ''outside'' of the Underground. Jane also counters that whenever they act out, ''she'' is the one who has to deal with the aftermath.
* MeaningfulName: A lot of the personalities are this with [[PersonalityPowers their abilities]], usually ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin.
* SomeoneHasToDoIt: Secretary points out to Jane that someone ''has'' to be the primary personality or else there will be chaos in the Underground. Jane argues that her job sucks and if they all want to keep each other together, then they should take her job instead.
* SplitPersonalityTeam: While they may not all like each other, they all agree that they each have roles to play in order to keep the Underground stable and Kay safe.
--> '''Hammerhead:''' I don't give a ''FUCK'' about regular people! We're supposed, to protect, the ''girl''!!
* TimeDissonance: Time flows differently in the Underground, since it looks like it would take a while for Driver Eight to find a personality and bring them to the Surface but it only lasts for merely a second in real life.
* [[UngratefulBitch Ungrateful Bitches]]: They tend to be rather unsympathetic to everything the primary personality has to deal with, especially in regards to cleaning up after their individual shenanigans. At the end of season 1, Jane turns to a suppressant drug to numb herself to everything to cope for a while, and [[spoiler:Miranda threw herself in the well after she got pressured into sex at a party, and the other personalities turned on her for it]].
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Some of the personalities don't get a lot of screen time [[spoiler:and those like Flaming Katy, Scarlet Harlot and Lucy Fugue end up dying in season 2]].
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Near the end of season 1 and for most of season 2, the personalities who were close to Niles no longer see him as a friend after they realize he's the reason they even exist and put Kay through so much pain.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** She may be extremely rough and rude to others, but she shows a softer side when it comes to Kay. Telling Jane she doesn't give a fuck about regular people when all she was here for was to protect Kay. When Jane can't move after taking a drug, Hammerhead gently tells her she'd go after Kay and make sure she stays safe. She even affectionately calls Kay "monkey".

* FingerlessGloves: She wears these in her personification in the Underground.
* LovableCoward: Her whole purpose is to make sure to steer clear of danger, but she is willing to help Cliff who she seems to have grown slightly fond of.

--> "Once upon a time my world was big and filled with monsters. But now the world is small. And ''I'' am the monster."

A psychologist with a CompellingVoice who uses her observations and power to manipulate people around her.
----
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Ironically, while other personalities seem to gain JerkAss tendencies, Dr. Harrison seems to have lost hers. She not only helps the rest of the Doom Patrol when she surfaces, she also doesn't seem to harbor any ill-will to the other personalities this time. [[spoiler:This changes in Season 2, when she decides that the Doom Patrol are "enabling" Jane and moves to imprison Jane]].
* CompellingVoice: Dr. Harrison can make people do what she wants by speaking to them, and even created a cult in the past. Of course, this becomes useless [[LogicalWeakness if you plug up your ears]].
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Seemed to have no plan for who should lead the Underground after [[spoiler:locking up Jane]]. When in control, the best plan she had was to diagnose and analyze one of the Sex Men rather than actually be of ''use.''

A crazy 90's romcom obsessed psycho who can make people obey her or fall in love with her, which she has done multiple times on her love interest Doug.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Calls Rita "Ri-Ri", Cliff "Cliffy" and Doug "Dougie".
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She looks very sweet, but will rip into others if she doesn't like them, or they don't do what she wants.
* CuteAndPsycho: She looks rather cute, but is incredibly manipulative and crazy. Even Jane admits this to Rita.
--> '''Jane:''' Yeah. Karen's cray-cray.
* TheDreaded: Rita balks when Cliff tells her about Jane suddenly throwing out phrases like "cool beans", and even says that out of the other sixty-four personalities, Karen has to be the ''worst''. Even ''Hammerhead'' and ''Jane'' can't stand Karen, especially in "Cyborg Patrol", when Jane's torturer accidentally puts on Karen's favorite song. Jane lets out a RapidFireNo as Karen takes over. For the most part, in Jane and her alters' perspectives, it's less that they are afraid of her than that [[TheFriendNobodyLikes they all hate her]].
* DumbBlonde: Comes off as this, but she has shown to be very cunning and manipulative.
* FairytaleWeddingDress: In her appearances in the Underground, she continues to wear her wedding dress.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Karen doesn't seem to be well-liked, even in the Underground.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When she activates her powers.
--> '''Cliff:''' [[NoSell You have incredibly psychotic eyes.]]
* HypnoticEyes: How Karen activates her powers.
* IdenticalStranger: She looks really similar to Jane, except with blonde hair.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: To an extent, but she also points out to Cliff that she believes the other personalities do not want this, and tells Cliff to stop chasing Jane because she can't give him "what he wants".
* LovePotion: How her powers work.
* NeverMyFault: Writes off anyone who disagrees with her as a "Hater", especially the other personalities in the Underground.
* ShipperOnDeck: For Cliff and Jane, believing Cliff is romantically attracted to her.
* SingleTargetSexuality: For Doug, unfortunately. She's only attracted to him and no one else. According to Rita, Karen has gotten together with him over a thousand times and she always wins him back...due to her [[LovePotion power]]. When she uses her powers on Dirk in “Cyborg Patrol”, she calls ''him'' Doug instead of his actual name. It's a hint she uses her powers on people and calls them Doug.
* SpeakingLikeTotallyTeen: Averted. She knows a lot of teen slang and understands how to use it, but this just leads to Rita being confused and finding it annoying.
--> '''Karen:''' What? No. Dougie and I are endgame!\\

* FieryRedhead: Averted, she's the ReasonableAuthorityFigure amongst the other personalities, and so far always appears calm and collected.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: When Jane tries to tell Secretary that she can't go back to the Surface and says that they were safe and happy now, she slaps her across the face. This in turn causes Jane to go back to the Surface.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite her serious demeanor, even she has her moments of snark, especially towards Jane.
--> '''Jane:''' I don't see what the big deal is. I've saved our assess a hundred time before.\\
'''Secretary:''' (''tsking'') You want to know what Miranda doesn't do? Pout, like a little bitch.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Makes good points on why Jane should go back to the Surface, and that each of them have a purpose in the Underground.

When Jane can't move after taking a drug, Hammerhead gently tells her she'd go after Kay and make sure she stays safe. She even affectionately calls Kay "monkey".

* NeutralNoLonger: Shadowy Mr. Evans proves to be enough of a threat that Hammerhead finally grasps the need for Jane to stay with the heroes.
* NumberTwo: Is usually the personality who takes over the most next to Jane.

* CuteAndPsycho: She looks rather cute, but is incredibly manipulative and crazy. Even Jane admits this to Rita.
--> '''Jane:''' Yeah. Karen's cray-cray.
* LovePotion: How her powers work.
* NeverMyFault: Writes off anyone who disagrees with her as a "Hater", especially the other personalities in the Underground.

--> "No man shall pass."

A woman covered in black that people meet before going to the Well in the Underground, where she assesses whether or not you'll be allowed to pass.
----
* DemotedToExtra: In the comics she was one of Jane's more prominent alter egos and sometimes physically manifested to slaughter their enemies. In the show she only appears once as the gatekeeper to the darkest part of Jane's psyche.
* DoesNotLikeMen: Self-evident.
* ExactWords: "No men shall pass". Since Jane isn't male and Cliff doesn't have a specific male... part, she lets both of them through.
* FlayingAlive: She does this to Cliff with her [[WolverineClaws iron claws]]. Thankfully, as this occurs inside Jane's mind, Cliff's skin merely sloughs off to reveal his Robotman form beneath.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Her eyes are perpetually a dark shade of red, and she's easily one of Jane's most dangerous personalities.
* ThresholdGuardians: Guards the entrance to the Well and will only let "No men" pass.
* WickedWitch: Her name and appearance evoke a witch from old English folklore.
* WolverineClaws: Has Freddy Krueger like fingers.
* YouShallNotPass: Doesn't let Cliff pass at first when he looks like his human self.

The original 5-year-old Kay Challis.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Hammerhead sometimes calls her Monkey.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Appears as a 5-year-old child, and is one of the only personalities to retain a childlike innocence.
* TheDoorSlamsYou: [[spoiler:She does this to Miranda after the other triggers the entire Underground's trauma by going along with the orgy party]].
* TroubledFetalPosition: [[spoiler:After being dragged into the Underground for triggering all of their trauma during the orgy party, Miranda goes to Kay to apologize and finds the little girl curled up with her knees to her chest]].

--> "Sweet, sweet Kay."

An impression of Kay's father who manifests as a monstrous giant made of puzzle pieces. He dwells in The Well at the depths of the Underground.
----
* AdaptationalAttractiveness: In the comics, Daddy was a representation of Jane's father, though he was depicted as a giant monster made from insects, excrement and puzzle pieces. Here, he's just a thousand living puzzle pieces in the shape of Jane's father.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: He's an enormous monster made of puzzle pieces.
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:After seemingly being excised in season 1, in season 2 Kay and Jane discover that the "Miranda" who has been running around is in fact Daddy, or some form of them]].
* BattleInTheCenterOfTheMind: Cliff and Jane engage him at The Well, which exists in the depths of Jane's psyche.
* CatchPhrase: Whenever they say "Sweet, sweet, baby" followed by whoever they're referring to. [[spoiler:This also reveals in season 2 that this personality is pretending to be Miranda]].
* EnemyWithin: He's a violent and destructive entity birthed by Kay's psychological trauma.
* HalfTheManHeUsedToBe: He rips Cliff in half at the waist when the latter attempts to defend Jane from him.
* KillAndReplace: [[spoiler:They didn't kill Miranda, she committed suicide of her own volition, but when two other personalities are killed by Candlemaker, "Miranda" seemingly returns; however, it becomes apparent by [[Recap/DoomPatrol2019S2E9WaxPatrol Wax Patrol]] that Daddy is just running around ''pretending'' to be Miranda]].
* NotQuiteDead: Jane defeats him at the end of [[Recap/DoomPatrol2019S1E09JanePatrol Jane Patrol]] by declaring that she's no longer afraid of him, but his whispered voice heard during [[Recap/DoomPatrol2019S1E15EzekielPatrol Ezekiel Patrol]] Indicates he hasn't been entirely excised from the Underground.
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: [[spoiler:As "Miranda", they're able to gain support of the other personalities quite easily thanks to their cult-like charm, and they easily ingrain themselves to the Doom Patrol after taking over as Primary. Jane and Kay are the only ones to think something is afoot]].
