* NauseaFuel: InUniverse and hilariously PlayedForLaughs. When Watney salvages the crew's excrement for use in his makeshift soil, opening up Johanssen's shit packets causes him to repeatedly gag and nearly puke. Despite them being frozen and dehydrated and him having plugs up his nostrils. The smell is just that bad, and slightly inexplicable, given that they were all on the same NASA-approved diet (save for Vogel's deeply German love of sausages).

* SirSwearsALot: Most other characters barely curse, but Watney delivers several F-bombs, even in the promotional videos.

* SirSwearsALot: Most other characters barely curse, but Watney delivers several F-bombs, even in the promotional videos. This actually gets him in trouble from a PR angle. Even the President of the United States chews out Teddy over Mark's freewheeling approach to what is publicly acceptable.

* TheAloner: Left behind on Mars during mission abort due to an accident that caused everyone else to believe he died. No one else has any idea he's alive for months until Park notices the changes at the Hab via satellite imagery.

* HonorBeforeReason: Agrees to the plan to give up the Taiyang Sheng booster . However, it's hinted at in the film and explicitly stated in the book that the CNSA is exchanging the booster in return for allowing one of their taikonauts on the Ares 5.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: As a Chinese government official, when he learned the Taiyang Shen booster could reach Mars and thus aid the American rescue mission, he should have informed the Chinese government and allowed them to make the decision on how to proceed. Instead he calls the Director of NASA personally to offer aid in the spirit of scientific cooperation between space agencies, and force the US and Chinese governments to go along with it or lose face on an international scale.

5]] but (at least in the film) a specific deal is not what he has in mind when he decides to call Teddy directly, suggesting that the deal itself is a retroactive justification for the CNSA giving the Taiyang Shen booster to NASA.

* TheGenericGuy: Isn't as defined as the rest of the crew. Part of it is his mission speciality, aerospace medicine, never obviously coming into play. Not helped by the fact that his other specialty, doing spacewalks, gets sidelined in the film so Lewis can pull her Atoner act. He's the last of the crew to be mentioned by name in the book, over a hundred pages in.

in. He was probably instrumental in Mark's medical recovery (Mark is suffering from malnutrition and specifically mentions that he has several broken ribs from the MAV's ascent), but this is not included in the film, which uses a TimeSkip right after Mark is rescued.
