* FeelingTheirAge: He's 35, which doesn't seem that old, but he's eventually revealed to be a veteran of "The Great War" that occurred 10 years prior to the events of the game. So he often quips about his age, such as complaining about his back, or saying he's too old to keep up with Yuri and the others. None of which stops him from sniping enemies, or [[LadyKiller making time for the ladies]]. [[spoiler: Part of him feeling old is due to having died and been brought back.]]

As Yuri, you find Flynn in one of the game he rooms cleaning. Yuri mentions that he enjoys cleaning.recalls how Flynn always kept his room so clean that you couldn't tell that anyone lives there. They reminisce for a bit before Flynn goes back to cleaning, saying that there's some mold that looks like it's going to put up a fight.

!!Brave Vesperia

[[folder:As A Group]]

Brave Vesperia is the Guild formed by Karol, Yuri, and Judith at the start of the second act of the game, after Karol was kicked out of the Hunting Blades and Yuri decided that a Guild suits him. The name comes from Estelle who takes it from the brightest star in the sky, of which there is a legend of a brother and sister who saved the world from a great cataclysm. Though the rest aren't officially part of the Guild (Flynn in particular is part of the Imperial Knights still) their close association with them has them considered part of the Guild by others. Despite appearances, it's not Yuri who's the Guild Leader but Karol.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]], but all of them get beefed up in the [=PS3=] re-release, with Flynn truly becoming a Party Member and Patty joining the group as well.
* BadassCrew: With [[MightyGlacier Karol]], [[LightningBruiser Yuri]], [[BloodKnight Judith]], [[PrettyPrincessPowerhouse Estelle]], [[HeroicDog Repede]], [[BlackMagicianGirl Rita]], [[BewareTheSillyOnes Raven]], [[FightingClown Patty]], and [[ColonelBadass Flynn]] on the team there is no doubt. [[spoiler: They even go on to defeat [[EldritchAbomination Adephagos]] and save the world!]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Though Estelle and Karol are the most obvious ones to go through it, the rest do this as well, slowly changing their views and opinions as much as attitudes. For example, Yuri's inner idealist comes to life, Rita and Judith learn to rely on others and what it's like to have friends, while Raven gains a new lease on life [[spoiler: literally.]]
* ChoiceOfTwoWeapons: Per the game system, they all have a "sub-weapon" to go with their primary WeaponOfChoice. For example, Yuri uses [[HeroesPreferSwords swords]] or [[AnAxeToGrind axes]] as his primary weapon, and a gauntlet on his fist as his sub-weapon.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: None of them have any blood family - except for Estelle having a cousin - alive. That said, it's not ''always'' convenient [[spoiler: as all of Judith's various issues can be traced to what her father did and what happened after he died]]. This trope pays a part in how Brave Vesperia ends up a FamilyOfChoice for the group.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Of the entire group, only Estelle doesn't have some kind of suffering or sorrow in her past ([[BreakTheCutie because the game makes up for that in spades]]). Even ''Karol'' has hang ups thanks to his constant guild hopping before he meets Yuri and forms his own Guild.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler: '''Yes they do'''. Yuri gets a special mention for wielding the punching device, but ''all'' of them play a part in knocking out the Adephagos.]]
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: All are introduced in such a fashion to quickly set up who and what they are. At least at first (see CharacterDevelopment above).
** Yuri's first appearance has him acting apathetic about the crisis outside but despite [[DeadpanSnarker snarking]] he's [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold very quick to jump to help once he's done posing]]. He also shows contempt for the nobles and knights, while bringing up [[ChildhoodFriend Flynn]] for the first time in a positive manner. When he gets into a fight with knights, he's shown to be [[MasterSwordsman very skilled]] though mocking and obviously [[BrilliantButLazy not taking things that seriously]], while also [[BloodKnight still enjoying himself]].
** Estelle's first appearance shows her on the run from knights who are trying to prevent her from doing something and, though she's [[NiceGirl polite]], she's [[PluckyGirl more than willing]] to get into a sword fight with them to reach her goal. She soon proves to be a friend of Flynn's and half-bullies Yuri into helping her [[ShelteredAristocrat despite only just having met him]]. But she also [[TheDitherer hesitates]] on what to do to reach her goal.
** Karol's first appearance has him [[CowardlyLion screaming trying to attack a monster]] (that isn't here) with a [[GlacierWaif weapon too big for him]] before having a freak out thinking he's going to die. He then follows it up by [[IJustWantToBeBadass trying to look impressive]] despite all of that and brags about [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex all the Guilds he's been in]]. He then quickly proves to [[MrExposition know a lot]] about various things and yet still is an IdiotHero.
** Rita's first appearance has her [[HairTriggerTemper grumpily wake up]] and [[BlackMagicianGirl toss a fireball at the group]] and act all indignant and apathetic to the group even after they are properly introduced. Her [[TeenGenius genius credentials]] are also shown by the appearance of all the formulas and work she's doing in her small shack. As a bonus, she's established as something of TheDreaded by how people react to the group wanting to talk to Mordio even before they meet her.
** Raven shows up first [[ManChild cheerfully]] engaging a knight on guard duty in the prison in a conversation and acting very fishy indeed, while being someone who does (despite the act) [[BewareTheSillyOnes know more than he appears to]]. He's also quick to be [[ButtMonkey made a fool]] by Yuri. [[spoiler: He's also personally taken from the cell by Alexei, hinting at them having a connection.]] His second appearance establishes his tricky WildCard status and [[ObfuscatingStupidity reveals he is much smarter than he seems]].
** Judith's first appearance [[spoiler: outside of her “dragon freak” attacks on blastia]] has her tank a blow for Yuri despite having no reason to, then reveals herself to be a [[MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch Krityan]] in {{Stripperific}} attire who is [[TheTease quick to flirt]] with Yuri and [[BloodKnight even quicker]] to get into a fight.
** Flynn's first appearance has him [[BadassMindsThinkAlike fight]] [[BackToBackBadasses back to back]] with Yuri after [[HotBlooded jumping head first]] into a battle to [[KnightInShiningArmour protect]] him. He then attacks Yuri because he's a wanted man, establishing his mindset. Despite that, he doesn't arrest [[ChildhoodFriend Yuri]] as he trusts him.
** Patty shows up trying to [[RefugeInAudacity waltz straight]] pass the guards on a manor, tries to [[CloudCuckooLander bribe one with oden]], and then [[LittleMissBadass escapes]] with a bit of trickery and smoke bombs, while [[LikesOlderMen flirting]] with Yuri and leaving him with just a dummy of her in hand.
* FamilyOfChoice: They never outright say it, but it's pretty obvious they see everyone as part of their family (Karol is the little brother with Yuri as his big brother, Rita as his big sister, and Raven as the father figure for example) though subtext suggests [[ShipTease otherwise]] in certain cases.
* ItsPersonal: By the time the BigBad is revealed, he's [[KickTheDog kicked so many dogs]] that the entire group is '''very''' pissed off.
* JackOfAllTrades: Guild wise, there is no job they won't do as the various side quests prove.
* MeaningfulName: Brave Vesperia refers to the legend of the cataclysm and of how it was defeated. [[spoiler: The climax is of them defeating [[EldritchAbomination The Adephagos]] for good, just like in the legend.]] Kanji wise, Vesperia can be spelled "Tomorrow Star".
* OneManArmy: As the 200-Man Melee can be won with any of them, they all qualify. Yuri and Judith are particularly stand out examples.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] and [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]]; they (at least Yuri, Karol, and Judith) are a guild but outside of sidequests they don't really do guild work. Then again, they ''do'' have a [[ItsUpToYou reason]] [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt for]] [[EldritchAbomination it]]. On top of that, they don't really seem to have a "goal" and "type" in regards to what they do as a Guild.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: A snarky slum kid turned swordsman, a naive and sweet princess, a cowardly kid who uses weapons way too big for him, a hot tempered genius mage, a fishy old man, the ''only'' Krityan who fights, a little pirate girl who fights with ''luck'' based artes, and the upstanding up and coming knight captain of the Imperial Knights. Oh, and a dog. There is ''no reason'' such a group would come together (except for Yuri and Flynn as ChildhoodFriends) and yet they not only do but [[spoiler: save the whole damn world!]]
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** A lot of dastardly plots tend be foiled simply because Brave Vesperia (and specifically [[BornUnlucky Yuri]]) happen to stumble into things and, being of heroic nature and in the company of a [[ChronicHeroSyndrome meddlesome]] princess, they get involved.
** In specific, the ''whole damn plot'' wouldn't have happened if a) Yuri didn't get arrested that day while looking for that blastia thief b) Raven hadn't decided (for whatever reason) to give Yuri the key out of the cells and c) Estelle hadn't heard some things the very same day that sent her running to help Flynn. All of these random events resulted in Yuri meeting Estelle and getting her out of Zaphias, which ultimately screwed over a lot of wicked plans.
* TitleDrop: Unique among the ''VideoGame/TalesSeries'' games, their guild name lets the title "Vesperia" be dropped repeatedly.
* TrueCompanions: By the end of the second act they are definitely this [[spoiler: as proven by how they greet Yuri's return after he falls from Zaude.]]

[[folder:Yuri Lowell]]
-> Voiced by: Creator/KosukeToriumi (JP), Creator/TroyBaker (EN), Creator/GrantGeorge (Definitive Edition content) (EN)

[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuri.jpg]]

Yuri is a commoner born in the lower quarter of Zaphias. Initially seeking to recover the lower quarter's stolen Aque Blastia, he is swept up in an adventure that will take him far beyond the Empire's borders. Although he is quite close to Flynn, they frequently clash over their conflicting world views, and have a friendly rivalry.
----
* ActionHero: Very action oriented.
* AlmightyJanitor: Yuri starts off as an ex-knight (a low level one) civilian fighter and...pretty much just ends up as another Guild member and doesn't even take the boss role. All this while being the strongest fighter in the group (possibly in the ''world'' by the end) and [[spoiler:being the one to strike the final blow against [[EldritchAbomination The Adephagos]]]]. Yuri being [[HumbleHero Yuri]], he prefers it this way.
* AlwaysSecondBest: How he feels about Flynn. Unlike most examples, he's actually perfectly okay with that. [[spoiler:If you defeat Flynn in his late game DuelBoss, Yuri actually sounds stunned that he was victorious]].
* AmbiguouslyBi: Though Yuri is willing to flirt with the ladies and shows enough appreciation there, his relationship with Flynn raises more than a few questions. And he has a few comments and such towards ''Raven'' as well. Not to mention, in ''First Strike'', when facing some guild members that are roughing up a bar, he jokingly says he's not looking for a boyfriend (which, to be fair, was to get a rise through snark). The entire original cast and production team vocally supporting Yuri having feelings for Flynn doesn't really disprove this.
* AnAxeToGrind: Aside from swords, he's also capable of using hand axes as his primary weapon. Given the sheer size of some of these axes he's swinging with one hand -- some of them looking like wood-cutting axes -- it's in the category of OneHandedZweihander.
* AngerBornOfWorry: His favourite way of expressing how he cares when his friends start doing things that puts their lives in danger. Or, in the case of Estelle, say it's okay for them to die.
* AnimalMotif: Several of his attacks have the title "Wolf", and is the proud owner of an actual canine, Repede. His last name, "Lowell", even means [[MeaningfulName "little wolf"]]
* AntiHero: Due to [[HeWhoFightsMonsters his willingness to stain his hands with blood in the name of justice]]. Thankfully, the lessons he learns during the game keep him from JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope, like the BigBad did.
* TheAtoner: [[spoiler:From ''The First Strike'' we learn that he had to kill Repede's dad in self-defense due to a case of DemonicPossession. He, of course, takes care of Repede from then on]].
* AwesomenessByAnalysis:
** Teaches himself how to do a Fatal Strike after seeing Clint do it. '''[[InstantExpert Once.]]'''
** A sidequest has him learn the Tiger Blade arte in a similar fashion; he reads the instruction manual once and then immediately is capable of pulling it off.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Flynn.
* BadassArmFold: One of his skit poses.
* BadassBaritone: To an extent, courtesy of Creator/TroyBaker and Creator/GrantGeorge. Creator/KosukeToriumi is no slouch there either. This is also the only constant thing to remind you [[DudeLooksLikeALady Yuri]] is actually a guy...
* BadassBoast: ''Very'' fond of giving these. The best example is probably when he claims he and his TrueCompanions "eat guys like [[spoiler:([[VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia Kratos]])]] for breakfast" -- and he has the skills to back it up.
* BadassCreed: ''"O brilliant blade of coldest steel, rend the infinite darkness... and crush my enemies to nothing! '''[[CallingYourAttacks SAVAGE WOLF FURY!]]"'''''
* BadassLongcoat: The Dark Enforcer sidequest gives him one.
* BadassMindsThinkAlike: With Flynn several times.
* BadassNormal: He can't use any magic, even though all Blastia users should be able to in theory -- he's simply a disinterested student. Not that it stops him from kicking all kinds of asses.
* BadassUnintentional: Very much one. Sheer ''dumb luck'' is what has him stumble on various disasters and he just happens to be the one, or with someone (such as Rita), with the skills/knowledge to handle it.
* BerserkButton: Has a few, like people in power abusing those beneath them and then using their position to ''get away'' with it. He also does '''not''' like it when people hurt his friends or adopted family (the Lower Quarter and implied to also feel the same about Brave Vesperia) as that will result in him [[TranquilFury quietly]] losing it. Oh, and his friends putting themselves in danger on purpose also pisses him off.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Karol.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Again, to Karol; Yuri's always the first one to jump to his defence and do what he can to protect him [[spoiler: up to pushing him out of a trap that got the rest of the party.]]
* {{Bishonen}}[=/=]LongHairedPrettyBoy: Could be a poster boy for both tropes.
* BloodKnight: He seems to be happiest when in a good brawl. Made especially clear in his reaction to the Giganto Monsters all being defeated, which is ''pure disappointment'' because there are no more monsters left that could give him a decent scrap.
* BlowYouAway: Despite his general disinterest in the workings of Blastia magic, some of his attacks trend towards Wind. Yuri will literally say "I'll blow you away!" when activating his [[SuperMode Over Limit]].
* BookDumb: Admits to not being very good at studying - the reason why he doesn't use magic - but certainly isn't dumb (see InstantExpert below). The fact he was raised in the lower quarter probably contributed to him being not good at book knowledge.
* BoringButPractical: Due to the fact that it's a cheap, fast [=OTG=] attack (short for Off[=\=]On The Ground, an attack that picks an enemy up off the ground from a knockdown) that's crucial for his [[{{Gamebreaker}} Infinite Combo]] game, one of his most powerful, and useful abilities is his standard Free-Run attack.
* BornUnlucky: Early in the game, Yuri sarcastically declares that he must be cursed after a string of misunderstandings, unwanted trouble, and bad luck. Which turns into a RunningGag (and a LampshadeHanging of a [[WalkingDisasterArea common RPG Cliche]]).
* BrilliantButLazy: Viewed as this by a few people, mostly those who want him to rejoin the knights. Considering he's a ''very'' talented fighter with a knack for leading people and yet starts off the game as rather unmotivated and mostly causing trouble in the Lower Quarter, they have a point. He has no real desire to learn or use magic due to the time needed to study it, but when offered the chance to learn a new arte that wasn't magic via a training manual, he happily did so. It's often pointed out that Yuri is an ideal knight for this reason; he just doesn't have the care or desire to stay with them.
* BrutalHonesty: Yuri doesn't mince words. At all. It does not matter who you are, even if you are the head of the Union or the freaking Emperor, Yuri will be as blunt as ever.
* CassandraTruth: No matter how many times he tries to convince Zagi that he's not Flynn during their first encounter, Zagi tells him to clam it.
* CelibateHero: He never actually pursues any kind of romance.
* ChickMagnet: Estelle, Patty, and Judith all seem to have some degree of interest in him.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Flynn, which is a major reason that, despite their increasingly different world views, they still manage to get along.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: He's more snarky about this, but he's as bad as Estelle. Just smarter about it.
** A good example comes early on during the first visit to Deidon Hold: when the Lord of the Plains and a hoard of monsters attack, who is the first one to jump in to help people? It's not Estelle, it's ''Yuri''. He even goes back for a little girl's doll.
** He acknowledges that sticking to the law and becoming an InternalReformist will do more good in the long run, but he still resorts to vigilantism to protect people in the short run.
* CombatParkour: His fighting style includes a lot of spins, flips, and jumps.
* CoolShades: Thanks to a synthesizable accessory.
* CoolSword: There's his [[IconicItem Second]] [[KatanasAreJustBetter Star]], [[spoiler:[[SwordAlmighty Dein Nomos]], and the [[SwordOfPlotAdvancement Vesperia Mk.II]]]] in the [=PS3=] version. That's not counting his [[InfinityPlusOneSword Fell Arm]], either.
* CovertPervert: Played with. Yuri doesn't hide his perversions, you just don't expect him to have them. Case in point? He put a lot of ''[[DoubleEntendre love]]'' in his food.
* TheCowl: In contrast to Flynn's [[TheCape cape]].
* DanceBattler: His quick, flowing motions and tendency to flip his sword fits this. It's more evident in TheMovie than the game. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYiAaOiJmM8 This]] clip shows it particularly well.
* DeadpanSnarker: To the point that many fans consider him something of an {{expy}} of [[VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss Jade Curtiss]].
* DirtyBusiness: No problem breaking the law or doing something morally dubious for the right reason. See MurderIsTheBestSolution below.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Very much so. Yuri...doesn't care.
** One Zaphias NPC mistakes him for a girl and, upon realizing his error, tells him to cut his hair, because having it long is "unmanly". Apparently he hasn't heard of EvenTheGuysWantHim.
** Early on in Halure, talking to an NPC kid gives us him declaring he wants to marry Yuri when he grows up.
** Another NPC in Nam Cobanda Isle remarks how she thought he was a girl and then gets jealous about how nice his hair is. A male NPC near her also double checks that Yuri is male.
** Yuri's "True Knight" costume give him a ponytail and curves around his waist in such a way that it is even ''easier'' to confuse him for a woman until you hear him speak.
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: [[PsychoForHire Zagi]] is very {{Yandere}} for him, he gets plenty of close moments with Flynn, a few NPC guys are interested even after realizing he's a guy, and even ''Raven'' has a few moments.
* EveryOneHasStandards:
** Yuri is a self-admitted BloodKnight, but even he is put off by how gung-ho Judith is when it comes fighting.
** Yuri enjoys messing with Karol and Rita, but he does so playfully and never to be outright mean. As a result, he quickly comes to Karol's defense when people mock him. Unlike people like Nan, Yuri knows Karol is brave deep down.
** His vigilantism is shown to have rules to it. He only kills people if they have proven they will continue to harm others and get away it, or if they are caught but get away with it for arbitrary reasons like the law getting in the way. Basically, if he knows they are doing wrong of their own will and get away with it already, he takes action because he knows they are irredeemably evil. [[spoiler: It's these morals that enable him to call out Phareoh for trying to kill Estelle. Phareoh was willing to kill Estelle because she COULD become a threat, not because she actively was causing problems.]]
* ExactWords: Tends to rely on this instead of outright lying, such as in regards to how he met Judith.
* ExperiencedProtagonist: Subverted. Yuri may be older, more cynical and more mature than most Tales or even JRPG protagonists, but many people think he doesn't really know how the world works. He agrees because he's seen so little of it. [[DoubleSubverted However]] compared to [[ShelteredAristocrat Estelle]] and [[IdiotHero Karol]] he certainly can fill this role, and he is StreetSmart enough to pick up on things fast, which ends up making him the unofficial leader of the group.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In TheMovie, when he's still a knight, he wears his hair tied back in a low half-tail. The string is cut during a fight and he wears it loose from then on, showing that he's becoming more reckless and less rule-abiding.
* {{Expy}}: Has some traits in common with [[VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss Jade]]: DeadpanSnarker, TheGadfly, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking moving block puzzles with one hand]].
* FacingTheBulletsOneLiner: [[spoiler:In the Kogorh desert believing he's about to get eaten: "Heh...go ahead. Hope you choke...on my bones..."]]
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Deals out a few of these. [[spoiler:Yuri drowns Cumore ''in quicksand'', and he slits Ragou's throat before kicking him off a bridge to bleed out in the water.]]
* FingerlessGloves: His subweapon. The [[InfinityPlusOneSword Garm Fang]] even goes as far as to give him Fingerless Gloves ''[[ImpossiblyCoolClothes with huge spikes on the end of them]]''.
* FashionableAsymmetry: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] but he only wears one glove (being his sub-weapon).
* {{Foil}}:
** To Flynn. [[ColorCodedCharacters Flynn mostly dresses in white; Yuri is mostly clad in black]]. Flynn is [[KnightInShiningArmor blonde and idealistic]]; Yuri is [[TallDarkAndSnarky raven-haired and sarcastic]]. [[RedOniBlueOni Flynn is the patient, soft-spoken blue oni to Yuri's outspoken, rebellious red oni]]. Flynn [[WideEyedIdealist believes in following his duties to the letter, hoping he can set an example to reform the Empire from within]]; Yuri [[JadeColoredGlasses is disillusioned with the Empire's corruption, and is more than willing to stain his hands with blood if he has to in the name of justice]]; and Yuri [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking is a very good cook, while Flynn is a]] LethalChef.
** Also subtly to Zagi. Both of them are [[BloodKnight Blood Knights]], but while Yuri enjoys a good scrap he very explicitly does ''not'' take pleasure in killing other humans, [[spoiler: even scum like Ragou and Cumore]], while Zagi is full on AxeCrazy. They also both have Rivals (Flynn to Yuri, Yuri to Zagi), but whereas Yuri doesn't really take it all that seriously [[spoiler: and doesn't even mind much if he loses their duel]], Zagi pursues beating Yuri with single-minded tenacity to the point that [[spoiler: it ultimately destroys his body and mind, what little of it there was to begin with anyway.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] but Yuri is actually rather good with kids, from the likes of Ted to Karol and even Patty. This is probably because he doesn't talk down to them. ''[[TheMovie The First Strike]]'' shows him rescuing and befriending a little girl.
* TheGadfly: Enjoys teasing people. Rita and Karol are favourite targets due to how they react.
* GuileHero: Downplayed as he prefers to beat up his problems, but Yuri is ''quite'' cunning. If it's not Rita, it's him who's putting the pieces together and offering up solutions.
* HairColorDissonance: Because PurpleIsTheNewBlack.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: [[spoiler: Yuri is aware that he can become what he kills, but he'll keep killing criminals the laws refuse to punish, as no one else will. Unlike most examples of this trope, Yuri is prevented from walking this path because of his friends.]]
* TheHero: A much [[DeadpanSnarker snarkier]] and [[VigilanteMan darker]] take on it than the usual but most certainly TheLeader and definitely heroic.
* HeroesLoveDogs: Given his wolf motif, he also has a big dog named Repede as a [[NonHumanSidekick sidekick]]... who's just as badass as his partner. [[SubvertedTrope However]] he says he has no particular fondness for dogs - Repede is simply Repede to him. TheMovie corroborates this, as while puppy Repede definitely was fond of Yuri from the beginning, Yuri found him annoying...at first.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: For all his apparent bravado, it's clear that he has a pretty low opinion of himself. He flat out calls himself a criminal and wants to ultimately put distance between him and Flynn for the sake of Flynn's career. [[spoiler: Flynn...objects. Strenuously.]]
* HeroWithBadPublicity: Not that he cares. In fact, the three times he's shown a wanted poster of himself, he reacts with disappointment (at the price on his head), delight (that it's been doubled), and with the tone of someone who was just given an unexpected but not unwanted present.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Flynn. Though Yuri ''tries'' to break it for Flynn's sake. Flynn doesn't stand for that though.
* HiddenDepths: He's a [[SupremeChef wonderful cook]] and is quite optimistic despite his cynical facade.
* HumbleHero: Doesn't care to be acknowledged for saving the world. It's also {{Deconstructed}} by Flynn, who hates the fact that Yuri never takes credit for his actions and instead allows Flynn to do so. It makes him feel like he hasn't earned his status and position, and it proves to be a major reason for their friendly duel later.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming:
** Yuri tends to slide into this at times in a minor way, due to being [[{{Tsundere}} not very honest about his feelings]]. For example, he can and will tease Karol about his LovableCoward status but if ''anyone else'' does the same Yuri is the first one to defend him. Of course, Yuri's teasing is not flat out mocking and cruel like said people...he just [[TheGadfly likes]] making Karol jump.
** Despite being a vigilante, he advises Flynn against it because it would ruin his career and his goal of reforming the empire's laws.
* HypocrisyNod: He's ''aware'' that [[spoiler:his vigilantism]] is rather hypocritical when he's called out on it. [[spoiler:However, he does it anyway because [[NecessaryEvil nobody else will]].]]
** While he calls out Phaeroh playing JudgeJuryAndExecutioner ForTheGreaterGood on [[spoiler:Estelle]] without a hint of self-awareness, he does admit the two of them might be NotSoDifferent when Rita points it out.
* IWorkAlone: Zigzagged. For the most part Yuri doesn't mind working with others, but when things get actually serious he tends to ditch the party to handle the matter himself. This comes to a head near the end of Act II when [[spoiler: Yuri attempts to leave the party behind to confront - and potentially kill - Estelle himself. Once they catch up to him and call him out on not trusting them after everything they've been through, Yuri finally drops this attitude for good.]]
* IconicItem: [[KatanasAreJustBetter The Second Star]], a late-game weapon, is the one Yuri wields on the game cover and most promotional art. To a lesser extent, his blastia bracelet since official art will show him wearing it even in the high school setting.
* InstantExpert: Whenever a new technique pops up, he pulls some AwesomenessByAnalysis and pulls it off in one go by just using the information he gets or watching someone pull it off.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: He grows increasingly but steadily ruthless in his dealings with villains over the course of the story, until [[spoiler:Don Whitehorse's death causes him to re-evaluate things, at which point he decides that he's been "too soft" and starts threatening to kill his own friends over [[DisproportionateRetribution relatively minor infractions]]. Thankfully he is pulled out of this mindset before he gets a chance to act on it.]]
* KnightInSourArmor: He left the Knights because he felt they were doing little to protect the downtrodden and end the [[AristocratsAreEvil corruption among the nobles]], but his sense of honor and justice still drives him toward this goal.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Despite what he might say about himself, he'll always come to the aid of the needy, even at his own risk. In the scene for Yuri's True Knight title, Estelle says he is more of a knight than anyone she knows.
* TheLeader: Of the Levelheaded kind, keeping the at times eccentric group around him on task. He develops into a Charismatic one as well by the end.
* LightningBruiser: He's fast, strong and can take a lot of hits.
* LimitBreak:
** Savage Wolf Fury is a multiple-hitting flurry of {{Flash Step}}s and slashes. The Hit Plus skill allows you to mash the attack button to extend the number of slashes he does.
** Heavenly Bladewing is an incredibly powerful two-strike attack, and is actually the gameplay version of the [[spoiler:giant spirit-powered energy blade that kills the Adephagos in the ending]]. It can only be done when the Vesperia No. 2 is equipped.
** Yuri also shares the VideoGame/TalesSeries's first dual Mystic Arte with Flynn when both can enter Over Limit 4 at the same time: Twin Wave, in which they trap the enemy with an enhanced version of their Guardian Field artes, strike them through, and finish them off with a massively powerful beam attack.
* MasterSwordsman: Even in the beginning when he's mostly [[BrilliantButLazy goofing off]] he regularly beats back knights and he's noted to be an InstantExpert with any blade/battle trick. By the end, there probably isn't anyone who can match him blade-to-blade as his DuelBoss with Flynn proves; the one guy he couldn't beat he now ''can'' beat.
* MeaningfulName: Lowell means "little wolf" to line up with his AnimalMotif.
* MissingMom: An optional scene in Mantiac reveals his mother died when he was a baby. Absolutely nothing is said about his [[DisappearedDad father]].
* MrFanservice: Not only a TallDarkAndHandsome NiceGuy with ChronicHeroSyndrome, can fight, can [[SupremeChef cook]] (with love even), loves animals, and even shows some skin in the UsefulNotes/{{PS3}} version's Mitsurugi costume. His normal and swimsuit costumes showing a peek at his chest are certainly appreciated by us fangirls. He also looks great in a tank top. [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by [[PettingZooPeople Kowz]], who nicknames him "Pheromone Boy".
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: [[spoiler: The reason why he killed Ragou and Cumore. When it becomes clear that the law will do nothing to stop the two of them, Yuri kills them both to make them pay.]]
* NervesOfSteel:
** Being very close to dying freaks him out ''a little''.
** Subverted when around Judith. He wholeheartedly admits that he thinks she could ''rip open a monster's stomach from the inside''. And that the idea ''scares him''.
* NiceGuy: [[TallDarkAndSnarky Tall, Dark, Snarky]] and badass? Oh yes. Otherwise he's actually a nice, friendly guy who likes to help people. Just [[BewareTheNiceOnes don't do evil deeds in front of him]].
* NiceHat: Yuri gets two pimp hats as [[AndYourRewardIsClothes Add-ons]].
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: The Roguish male to Flynn's noble.
* NotSoStoic: Yuri normally keeps his cool, but even he has limits. There are plenty of optional skits that seem to revolve around him losing his cool and more than once some enemies have ''really'' pissed him off.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Yuri picks up on [[spoiler: Estelle's status as royalty, as well as her ability to use artes without a blastia]] almost immediately, but pretends not to notice and feigns ignorance on multiple occasions to protect her from the probing of others on the topic. Only once the issues come to a head does he admit he knew.
* OneManArmy: Can pretty much slaughter the whole coliseum with his [[InfinityPlusOneSword Fell Arm]], and [[MakingASplash Water Burst Arte]], which obliterates pretty much everything around him.
* OrderVersusChaos: Very firmly represents chaos to Flynn's order.
* PayEvilUntoEvil: [[spoiler:He kills Ragou because the law failed to punish him. He later leaves Cumore to drown in quicksand.]]
* PoisonousFriend: In-universe, Sodia considers Yuri to be nothing but trouble to Flynn, due to [[VigilanteMan his actions]] making more work for them. She also believes his association with Flynn could tarnish his reputation. A point which Yuri [[JerkassHasAPoint doesn't entirely disagree with]], mostly in regards to the "associating with Flynn" part. [[spoiler: This culminates in Sodia [[MurderTheHypotenuse trying to get rid of him]], atop Zuade.]] However, Flynn makes it clear that Yuri is not [[AvertedTrope and never will be]] a burden to him. [[DuelBoss Vigorously]].
* PowerFist: His sub-weapon.
* PreMortemOneLiner: "Tell me. How many times have you heard those same words?"
* PriceOnTheirHead: He is presented with his own wanted poster... and is insulted to learn that the bounty on him is "only 5,000 Gald." It is later raised to 10,000.
* RazorWind[=/=]SwordBeam: His Final Gale and Azure Edge artes respectively. Taken UpToEleven with Twin Wave, a CombinationAttack with Flynn.
* RousingSpeech[=/=]DareToBeBadass: He fires off some extremely badass rants and one-liners that almost instantly break Raven, Karol ''and'' Estelle out of their respective [[HeroicBSOD BSODs]].
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Does this often and it's [[DeconstructedTrope not]] always a good thing like [[spoiler: his murder of Ragou and Cumore]]. However, in the end Yuri does it for the sake of others and it's usually a good thing when he decides to screw it and do the right thing.
* SeriousBusiness: For some reason, Yuri absolutely loses it when the party decides to eat sorbet in the Blade Drifts or udon in the desert.
* ShipperOnDeck:
** For Ristelle - at the very least, he coins their ship name.
** He also, according to some dialogue, might even ship [[spoiler: Flynn/Sodia or Flynn/anyone who's an upstanding person/knight]] which seems in part drawn from some HeroicSelfDeprecation.
* ShipTease: He is in several teasy relationships, though most aren't necessarily reciprocated by him. Most of it, in and out of universe, is with Flynn, which does go both ways.
* ShutUpKirk: A rare heroic example in response to [[spoiler:Flynn's asking if Yuri really intends to dirty his hands with vigilantism.]]
-->'''Yuri:''' [[spoiler: Intend to? ''I already have.'']]
* SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids: His response to Flynn's "WhatTheHellHero" moment.
-->[[spoiler:"You can't deny that lives were saved because those bastards [i.e., Ragou and Cumore] were put down! You'd rather tell people, 'sorry you have to die today, I promise we'll change things soon'."]]
* SmallStepsHero: Kill a villain to end his villainy forever? [[GoodIsNotSoft No problem]]. Allow an innocent young woman die to save the world? Forget it. See the quote in SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids for emphasis.
* SneakyDeparture: [[spoiler: To confront an out-of-control Estelle by himself, knowing the party would be unwilling to kill her even if there was no other choice.]] It doesn't last long though; the party catches to him in less than a day and lays into him for his lack of trust.
* SupremeChef:
** Presumably perfected his skills from helping out at the inn he lives above, but he started learning how to cook so [[LethalChef Flynn]] ''wouldn't''.
** According to the skits, he's one the best cooks in the party, along with Judith.
** The last cooking skit on the list is of Estelle wanting to hire Yuri as a royal chef. He thinks she's exaggerating, but it's ''[[CloudCuckooLander Estelle]]''...
* SoreLoser: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] but when he finds himself on the other end of a HopelessBossFight against the Don, a follow up skit reveals he's determined to one day beat him and is not particularly pleased to have been beaten by him. Noteworthy, this is one of the few times he shows that kind of frustration; his FriendlyRivalry has him (rather happily) admit to Flynn coming out on top all the time.
* TheSouthpaw: Technically he's ambidextrous, but he favours his left hand when fighting.
* TheStoic: Yuri is ''mostly'' unflappable. If he loses his cool, it's normally in a [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness serious]] situation...[[RuleOfFunny or for comedic purposes]].
* StreetSmart: Very worldly about how humans work and think. He starts off a bit sheltered (strangely) due to his upbringing and having stuck to the lower quarter for so long interestingly enough (which results in ''Karol'' acting as MrExposition) but he learns fast and has sharp insight.
* SweetTooth: Yuri likes every cookable dish. However, he '''loves''' every single dessert. This is because of his poor background; sweets became associated with special things and occasions.
* SwordAndFist: Yuri adds in punches and even some kicks into his attacks. This is [[TechnicianVersusPerformer not standard]] to the techniques he learns, which gets mentioned in a [=PS3=] skit when comparing his style to Flynn's.
* ThrowTheSheathAway: Yuri has a distinct, one-handed method of doing this.
* [[TallDarkAndSnarky Tall, Dark, Snarky]] [[TallDarkAndHandsome AND Handsome!]]
* TeamMom: Hilariously enough, yes he is. He's the one providing emotional support the most to the various members (Estelle, Karol, and Raven most prominently), and is the glue that keeps the team together. The team actually splits up temporarily [[spoiler: when he disappears after Zaude]] and only come back together when he returns. Considering he's the first SupremeChef of the group, and various skits in that regard, he's also apparently making sure the group is well fed.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: His fighting style is very much that of a performer. He's not as technically skilled as Flynn, but more than makes up for it with his agility, creativity and sheer RuleOfCool. Invoked by a [=PS3=] exclusive skit which compares their two styles in exactly this manner.
* TheNicknamer: Seems to have a nickname for everyone -- he's coined "Estelle", "Captain Karol", "Judy", "Old Man", "Tweedle A and B", "Apple Head"...
* ThinkNothingOfIt: Has turned down rewards for several of Brave Vesperia's jobs, much to the rest of the guild's economic despair. Also doesn't mind when people attribute his heroics to Flynn, [[spoiler:though Flynn certainly does]].
* TranquilFury: Whenever Yuri is '''really''' pissed off, this is his state. He's particularly and creepily calm while [[spoiler: killing Ragou and Cumore.]]
* {{Tsundere}}: A platonic, downplayed version about the lower quarter people. He complains and grumbles a lot, but it's obvious despite his attitude he cares greatly for his adoptive family. He also gets like this towards Flynn and the rest of his friends at times too, most notably when you meet Flynn for the first time ingame in Capua Nor. Apparently Yuri isn't very good at being honest about his feelings...
* TheUnchosenOne: Yuri himself is just a normal, if badass and [[DeadpanSnarker snarky]] guy who had no role in the Empire and Union issues, the secession issues, or [[spoiler: anything to do with the Adephagos]] prior to the game's start, yet becomes the major factor in them. As in [[spoiler: he is instrumental in ''saving the world'']].
* VicariouslyAmbitious: Tries to do all the dirty work for Flynn while letting Flynn take the credit for his good deeds so that Flynn will be able to reform the government from within.
* VigilanteMan:
** [[spoiler:When he kills Ragou and Cumore. He even gets a title for it.]]
** There's also a sidequest featuring [[spoiler:a man who is just as much of a vigilante as Yuri, but more brutal and with fewer scruples and morals. [[AndYourRewardIsClothes The end reward of the lengthy sidequest is a]] BadassLongcoat.]]
* WalkingDisasterArea: And he knows it. Judging by the ''very first skit'' he's been like this his whole life but having not really gone out into the world much he never noticed before he started travelling around. It's also implied that now he's out of the Lower Quarter things are ''much'' more peaceful with Yuri not around being the resident WeirdnessMagnet.
* WeaponAcrossTheShoulder: Look at his picture. His idle pose in combat also has him casually doing this.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[HeroesPreferSwords Swords]] or [[AnAxeToGrind axes]]. Lampshaded in a skit where Estelle and Karol argue over which weapon Yuri would look cooler wielding. His most IconicItem in this regard however is the Second Star and he has access to more swords as weapons than axes.
* WhatTheHellHero: Not afraid to do this and doesn't flinch (usually) when called out himself.
** When he [[spoiler: kills Cumore]], Flynn calls him out on it.
** He later repays the favor by [[spoiler: calling Flynn out on his blind faith in Alexei.]]
** He also calls out Sodia in the third act (see her folder for details).
* WideEyedIdealist: Averted and then downplayed. He's certainly not ''wide eyed'' about anything, but underneath his jaded attitude Yuri is as much as an idealist as Flynn. It's why he's got such faith in Flynn at being able to change things.
* WouldHitAGirl:
** Gets into a fistfight with Judith early in the game. They weren't serious, but it ''was'' his idea. He even throws the first punch.
** On a more serious note, later in the game he implied that he was willing to [[spoiler:actually kill Judith when she seemed to betray them. And even kill Estelle if he couldn't find a way to save her from Alexei.]]
* YouDidntAsk: Yuri would be good at Poker, as he frequently pulls this trope throughout the game. For example, he'd known, or at least suspected, who [[KingIncognito Estelle was]] from the moment they first met, but he decided to play along instead of saying anything.
* ZenSurvivor: [[spoiler: Ends up playing this role for Sodia near the end of the story.]]

-> Voiced by: Creator/MamoruMiyano (JP), Creator/SamRiegel (EN)

[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flynn.jpg]]

Flynn is Yuri's childhood friend who Yuri states that he "[[AlwaysSomeoneBetter could never beat at anything]]", and a rising star in the Imperial Knights. He begins the story on a knightly pilgrimage unaware of the dangers he's in, which spurs Estelle and Yuri to try to find him, and he officially represents the Empire across the world as he investigates the various conspiracies piling up around him. Though he and Yuri are close, their contrasting world views can bring them into conflict.
----
* AccidentalHero: PlayedWith in that he is genuinely heroic. It's just that he's very often credited for Yuri's work, and is even [[spoiler:named Commandant]] thanks to that. He doesn't approve of being given all of Yuri's credit and becomes (highly) upset that Yuri doesn't care who gets credit for what he does.
* TheAce: He's even the ace card in the poker minigame.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Though he has his CovertPervert moments (like the optional skit about the girls in their swimsuits), Flynn doesn't really seem ''interested'' in them as much as he is interested in ''Yuri''.
* BackToBackBadasses: With Yuri.
%%* BadassCape
* BadassInCharge: Becomes the de facto leader of the Imperial Knights after [[spoiler: Alexei reveals himself as the BigBad. He's officially promoted to Acting Commandant soon after.]]
* BadassMindsThinkAlike: With Yuri several times. Especially due to their Dual Mystic Arte.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Yes, he genuinely ''is'' that nice and a KnightInShiningArmor. He's ultimately one you should never cross as when he gets mad, he's ''enraged''.
* BigDamnHeroes: Often heads TheCavalry that bails Brave Vesperia out of situations too big to handle on their own, like [[spoiler:halting the war between Dahngrest and the Empire]], and [[spoiler:ramming the rampaging battleship Heracles off-course so its laser cannon misses the heavily populated Zaphias. Also played in the BigDamnVillains territory when his brigade is the one that's meant to cut Yuri and his party off after Belius' death]].
* {{Bishonen}}: He's a ChickMagnet thanks to this.
* BloodKnight: Flynn tries to keep a lid on it (such behavior is unbecoming of a Knight, after all), but he enjoys a good fight just as much as Yuri. Best shown in ''The First Strike'' when Yuri instigates a bar fight. Annoyed, he tries to stay out of it until one of the brawlers punches ''him'' in the face. A second later he returns the favor then [[{{Hot Blooded}} charges into the fray himself]].
* TheBrigadier: After his [[spoiler:first]] promotion.
* TheCape: In contrast to Yuri's [[TheCowl cowl.]]
* ChickMagnet: A sub-event in Dahngrest reveals him to be very popular with women when Raven takes him long to the bar. Yuri says girls always used to flock around him in the past.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Yuri. This is why he gives Yuri an amazing amount of slack in regards to various less than legal (or flat out illegal) things he does.
* ColonelBadass: Especially in the UsefulNotes/{{PS3}} version where he is promoted into a proper party member. Although he's not quite a colonel -- he goes from Lieutenant to Captain to [[spoiler:[[FourStarBadass Commandant]]]] over the course of the game.
* CombatMedic: Has a few healing artes, but is best suited in physical combat.
* ColorCodedCharacters: Knight uniforms come in a variety of colors, but Flynn's is ''always'' blue at every stage in his career.
* CordonBleughChef: The scariest cook in the game. Flynn's food is so bad that Yuri learned how to cook so Flynn ''wouldn't'', and even causes the Wonder Chef to storm off in disgust. Turned on its head, somewhat, in that he's actually quite skilled in the kitchen... it's his warped sense of taste that's the problem. If he sticks to the recipe the meal will taste fantastic, but if he modifies it in any way it's ruined. And unfortunately there's no way to tell either, as the food will always ''look'' delicious no matter what he put in there. Thus, eating one of Flynn's meals is akin to taking your chances at the Roulette table.
* CoolSword: His signature weapon is a [[TechnicolorBlade blue]] sword with a large and somewhat elaborate crossguard.
* CovertPervert: He has his moments, especially in the [=PS3=] version where he gets more spotlight.
* DaddyIssues: In ''[[TheMovie The First Strike]]'', the death of his father and the feeling that it was for naught weighs heavily on Flynn. By the end of the movie, he realizes otherwise and instead takes inspiration from his father from then on.
* DeadpanSnarker: Mostly in the banter between him and Yuri. He sometimes snarks at the rest of Brave Vesperia, albeit in a far more polite manner than Yuri.
* EleventhHourRanger: In the [=PS3=] version, where he permanently joins after Aurnion.
* FakeUltimateHero: To a certain extent. While he does some good, he ultimately gets the credit for most of Yuri's actions. In a bit of a twist, he's fully aware of his status as one, and isn't too fond of it.
* {{Foil}}: To Yuri.
* FormerTeenRebel: Apparently was something of a trouble-maker back in the day.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Only in the Xbox 360 version. The [=PS3=] version, however, upgrades him to a full party member who is available much more often throughout the game, although not often enough to disqualify him from this trope. He permanently joins after Aurnion.
* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: All of the nameless NPC Knights wear helmets, but Flynn is a major character therefore his face needs to be visible.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Yuri.
* HiddenDepths: He's just as [[HotBlooded rash]] and [[BloodKnight enthusiastic about fighting]] as Yuri underneath his "shining example of knighthood" exterior.
* HumbleHero: As bad as Yuri, being incapable of taking praise. In fact, he's ''worse'': beating the Coliseum with him results in a skit where it's made [[https://youtu.be/EP6iT8w0GeY?t=11814 very]] clear he's a HumbleHero taken UpToEleven.
* HypocriticalHeartwarming: In a variation of this trope, the most '''humble''' of the characters who always downplays his accomplishments and doesn't care to be recognizes is ''incensed'' by the fact Yuri does the same thing.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: One of very few knights wholeheartedly devoted to goodness, and not involved in any shady business. [[LawfulStupid That doesn't mean he's immune to manipulation]], however, which is lampshaded to hell and back.
* InspectorJavert: To the party in the first act. Downplayed as he lets them get away with more than the usual.
* InternalReformist: His motivation for joining the Imperial Knights.
* KamehameHadoken: He has multiple [[FrickinLaserBeams frickin' laser beam]] spells in the [=PS3=] version, but the clearest example is the spell Divine Streak, which is just a straight-up giant laser attack.
* KnightInShiningArmor: A very stand-up example.
* TheLancer: In the [=PS3=] version.
* LawfulStupid: Has a bad bout with this during the mid point of the 2nd arc. He really regrets it once he realizes [[UnwittingPawn how much he was played.]]
* TheLeader: Of the Imperial Knights [[spoiler: after Alexei reveals his true colours]], of the Levelheaded and Charismatic type, though he leans slightly more towards Charismatic.
* LethalChef: If he follows the recipe to the letter, his food is great. If he doesn't... he is apparently so bad he got the Wonder Chef to yell at him, and causes one of the judges in a cooking contest to spontaneously combust. Yuri comments during a skit that he learned to cook for himself so as to avoid Flynn making the food.
* LightEmUp: His primary element in the original version. Doubles up with PlayingWithFire in the [=PS3=] version thanks to his second Mystic Arte, along with Hell Fire Blade and Fierce Hell Fire Blade. He can also combine his light with BlowYouAway thanks to a Skill Change in the UpdatedRerelease.
* LightIsGood: Part of the whole [[ThePaladin Paladin]] thing.
* LightningBruiser: Although he's as strong as a MightyGlacier, Flynn's just as quick as Yuri and more durable. He doesn't have the same combo potential as Yuri, but he is easily the second best combo character in the party.
* LimitBreak:
** Radiant Dragon Fang, which he first shows off to Yuri [[spoiler:in their final duel]], is a spiraling wave of two dragons that blasts through the enemy and carries them upwards. Strangely, in English, Flynn [[CallingYourAttacks vocalizes]] this as "Light Dragon Destruction!"
** Firebird Flight is a strong flame-empowered combo of sword strikes followed up by Flynn briefly transforming into a phoenix-like being that blasts through the enemy. He can only activate it off of Hell Fire Blade and Fierce Hell Fire Blade, implying this is the ultimate version of those techniques.
** As noted in Yuri's section, Flynn shares the VideoGame/TalesSeries's first dual Mystic Arte with him in Twin Wave.
* ManaShield: He has a skill which reduces damage taken by sacrificing some TP.
* MagicKnight: Specializes in casting light magic to fight foes as much as smashing them with his sword.
* MeaningfulName: His first name in Japanese is written and pronounced as ''furen'' (フレン) [[note]] As opposed to ''furin'' (フリン), the more common way of writing 'Flynn' in Japanese).[[/note]], which [[PunnyName sounds like]] 'friend' in {{Engrish}}.
* NeatFreak: At one point in the [=PS3=] version of the game he mentions that he enjoys cleaning.
* NobleMaleRoguishMale: The noble male to Yuri's roguish.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He's as much of a BloodKnight as Yuri, got into just as much trouble as him when he was a kid, and he even can appreciate Judith's looks in her bikini.
** In one skit, he and Yuri start bickering over who has the better fighting style.
* OrderVersusChaos: The order to Yuri's chaos.
* ThePaladin: Albeit a more secular version. He has a sword and shield, light themed artes, and has a strong sense of justice.
* PromotedToPlayable: In the original Xbox 360 version, Flynn is only a major side character who serves as a [[spoiler:DuelBoss]] to Yuri at certain points, and aids Yuri as an AI-controlled GuestStarPartyMember during the monster rampage on Hypionia near the end of the game. In the [=PS3=] version/Definitive Edition, Flynn becomes a fully playable party member.
* RealMenEatMeat: His favourite recipes are those that contain beef or pork. He doesn't care for seafood, though. Like Yuri's fondness for desserts, this is a result of growing up poor and only having access to such foods on special occasions.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: As a lieutenant in the Knights, and later as [[spoiler:Captain, and Commandant.]]
* ShipTease: A lot of this with Yuri, which has continued even into later crossover spinoffs.
%%* SupportingLeader
* TeamDad: In the [=PS3=] version as he gets more screen time and properly joins the team. Various bonus scenes and skits has him act as discipliner, riding herd on the crazy cast, or diving straight in to help in various ways.
* TechnicianVersusPerformer: A technician, favoring traditional swordsmanship while sacrificing speed and style.
* ThinkNothingOfIt: Flynn goes out of his way to help people as much as he can, but he doesn't like it when people do this to ''him''.
* TookALevelInBadass: The [=PS3=] version significantly buffed him in every way possible, including turning him into a permanent party member. Unfortunately for the player, this also applies to the DuelBoss against him, which is no longer a joke, even if you know what you're doing.
* UnwittingPawn: In the second act [[spoiler: he spends some time as this to [[BigBad Alexei]]]]. He spends the rest of the act making up for it.
* WideEyedIdealist: He believes in making things better by rising high enough to make a difference, though he is at least somewhat down-to-earth about it.
* WeaponOfChoice: HeroesPreferSwords and LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe, befitting his knightly personality.

[[folder:Repede]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MakotoIshii (JP)

[[quoteright:265:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/repede.jpg]]

Yuri (and Flynn)'s dog. Mainly a supporting character not directly involved in the plot, but serves as Yuri's loyal companion and moral support. The pipe in his mouth is a memento from his previous master.
----
* AmplifiedAnimalAptitude: Highly intelligent, and usually seems to understand what the party is saying. He still needs Yuri to read him skill manuals, though.
* AnimalStereotypes: A loyal HeroicDog.
* BottomlessBladder: Subverted, he has a sidequest in which he "marks" the various areas of the world.
* CutlassBetweenTheTeeth: How he fights - not with his claws and teeth, but with a dagger he holds in his jaws.
* FriendToAllChildren: He's noted to be fond of kids and has stepped in to rescue a few more than once.
* TheGadfly: For a dog, he really seems to enjoy messing with Rita and Estelle's heads. Maybe he got it from Yuri...
* HatesBeingTouched: Very particular as to who he allows to pet him.
* HeroicDog: A quite noble dog... who aids Brave Vesperia (and technically is a member despite being, well, a dog) in various good deeds. He even goes off on his own on at least one side quest to save someone.
* ImprobableUseOfAWeapon: He fights with a dagger in his teeth as noted above.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: His second weapon is a collar... who knows how that works.
* InvulnerableAttack: "Gale Dog". Not actually an attack, but it makes Repede completely immune to all damage for the very brief time it's active. [[UpToEleven This includes]] ''[[LimitBreak mystic artes]]''.
* ItemCaddy: Many of his skills augment item usage. There's a skit where the party complains to Yuri about having to use items covered in dog slobber.
* LightningBruiser: Repede isn't much more fragile than the other melee characters, and if played right, he can decimate an entire field of enemies before they even have time to react.
* LimitBreak:
** An at-first unnamed attack that sees Repede FlashStep through the target and strike them harshly with his dagger. In the skit afterwards, the rest of the party can't decide what to name it, so a frustrated Rita finally just christens it "Slash!!".
** Lightning Flash can only be activated when Repede has used certain artes enough and his Agility Stat is high enough, which comes through in a series of lightning-fast slashes that batters the enemy around, with the final slashes coming out so fast Repede doesn't even appear to be moving to the naked eye.
* MeaningfulName: Repede is Old English for [[SuperSpeed Rapid]]. Many of his strongest artes focus on his speed and he has many skills focusing on fast movement. His name in Japanese is even pronounced more like "rapid" (Rapido).
* NamingYourAttacks: Played With. After performing his LimitBreak, a skit opens up where the party comes up with different names for it. Rita settles it by naming it "Slash!!"
* NonHumanSidekick: To Yuri and at times Flynn.
* TheNoseKnows: Has a very keen sense of smell, and is able to track [[spoiler: Regaey/Yeager]] across an entire ''continent''.
* OneNoteCook: You can assign him to be the party's chef... though all he knows how to make is dog food.
* OutOfFocus: Repede is not given much spotlight overall in the story, mostly serving as Yuri's most loyal ally who is there whenever he needs him. {{Justified}} since Repede is just a normal, if not badass dog; there isn't much he ''can'' do besides be there.
* PickyEater: Including the [=PS3=] exclusive recipes, Repede dislikes ''eighteen'' out of the 42 recipes you can get. That puts him as the one with the highest amount of recipes he dislikes of the team. This comes from the fact he dislikes ''every'' recipe that contains onions, along with sharing the dislike for desserts with Raven.
* StaticCharacter: He's a ''dog'', self-explanatory.
* TheStoic: Justified. He can't talk, after all. Even so, he is very indifferent and haughty towards most of the party, with the exception of Yuri, Flynn, Rita, Judith, and Patty.
* TeamPet: A version which ''fights'' alongside the group properly. He's one of the more effective fighters in part due to him being a dog (he's low to the ground so certain attacks fly over him). He's a more traditional non-combatant version in TheMovie, since he's just a puppy then.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Rita, if you watch the skits and have them in the active party together. While Rita is the only one Repede is ever shown actually fighting with in skits, and they are constantly getting on each other's weak points (water and heights), his AI is usually the one to run to her aid if she's attacked and she usually is the first and most common one to call out if Repede's health gets low ("The dog's almost dead!").
* WeaponOfChoice: Fights wielding a [[KnifeNut knife]] in his mouth. And sometimes [[NerfArm chicken.]]

[[folder:Estellise "Estelle" Sidos Heurassein]]
->Voiced by: Creator/MaiNakahara (JP), Creator/EdenRiegel (EN), Creator/CheramiLeigh (''The First Strike'' prequel film, EN)

[[quoteright:265:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/estelle.jpg]]

A cheery but exceedingly naive noblewoman who's spent her entire life locked up in Zaphias's castle reading books and dreaming of adventure. Yuri finds Estelle while escaping from the castle dungeon. One escape sequence and an attack by a PsychoForHire later, and the two are running off on a quest to find Flynn. Over the course of the journey, Yuri and Brave Vesperia help Estelle discover who she really is.
----
* ACupAngst: Played with; while she's not flat by any means (she's in the middle in the BoobsOfSteel scale by being a both a strike and magic arte user, not to mention between [[PetitePride Rita]] and Judith), she has the most problems with Judith's proportions, leading to this quote...
--> '''Estelle: (whispering)''' [[{{Gainaxing}} They're... bouncing]].
--> '''Judith:''' What are you looking at?
--> '''Estelle:''' I wish I could bounce.
** Ironically they do in the opening movie.
* {{Adorkable}}: On account of not having much outside experience. She's possibly the most adorable cinnamon roll in the game.
* AffectionateNickname: Everyone on the team (except the ever proper Flynn) calls her Estelle, something she appears to appreciate.
* AllYourColorsCombined: [[spoiler: Combined with a bit of SummonMagic, in her [=PS3=]-exclusive Mystic Arte, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rb9CU-D-2ok Ultimate Elements]].]]
* AmbiguouslyBi: On one hand, Judith questions her about her ideal man in a skit (getting a gushy response about a book character), and Estelle seems to have a BodyguardCrush on Yuri. On the other hand, she has enough ShipTease with Rita that Yuri himself [[ShipperOnDeck coins]] the ship name Ristelle.
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: After getting {{Mind Rape}}d by Alexei. She recovers.]]
* [[AnimalsHateHim Animals Hate Her]]: She just can't get Repede to warm up to her, no matter how hard she tries. This even carries over to later spinoffs like ''Radiant Mythology 3''.
-->"Why doesn't he like me? (sniff)"
* ApocalypseMaiden: [[spoiler:Prior to act three, she was virtually a walking, talking Hermes Blastia.]]
* ApologeticAttacker: One of Estelle's battle-opening quotes is "I'm sorry if I hurt you!" She [[CharacterDevelopment stops doing this]] as she goes through a TraumaCongaLine.
* ArtificialBrilliance: She often uses Angel Ring to bring enemies close together when Rita or Raven is preparing to hit one with an ability that inflicts damage across a small area.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Her outfit at the very start of the game. It looks appropriately regal, but as soon as she tries to move quickly she stumbles and falls - probably owing to her shoes, her dress, or both, since she immediately comments about needing to change clothes.
* BadassAdorable: She's a cute, ditzy girl, whose attack artes include bopping her enemies on the noggin with a toy mallet (Pow Hammer), or tickling them with a piece of catnip (her secret burst arte) [[CloudCuckoolander while humming]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SSBwdZdDbw to herself.]]
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler: Thanks to Alexei. She gets better thanks to an IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight and speech from Yuri.]]
* BreakTheCutie: She's used to being able to heal and protect others with her Artes, but her compassion ultimately works against her, when it's revealed that her Artes are [[spoiler: fatal to the Entelexeia. Plus, as a Child of the Full Moon, her very existence disrupts the natural flow of Aer in their world]]. This begins [[DespairEventHorizon her downward spiral]], as it leaves her feeling [[spoiler: [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone responsible for Belius' death]]]] and makes her believe she's a burden on her friends. Then [[spoiler: Alexei]] gets a hold of her and it gets worse from there.
* TheChick: The heart and main mediator of the team.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: She's got it '''bad''', stopping to help anyone who looks hurt. [[DeconstructedTrope Deconstructed]] at times, as this can get her (and the rest of the party) in trouble and it later turns out [[spoiler: using her powers consumes a massive amount of aer, creating imbalances that inch the world closer to death]], which just makes it worse. Luckily that problem is solved and Estelle learns to think better before she leaps.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: What else would you call a girl who [[LiterallyMinded literally expects someone]] to "eat their words"? And she really likes doing high fives with everyone... [[AllMenArePerverts except Raven]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zkUGjAUngM of course.]]
* CombatMedic: In addition to healing, she can fight on the front line with a sword or sling or attack from the rear with a HolyHandGrenade. She's the best in the game, if not the entire series... provided you've taken the time to properly adjust her AI settings and unlocked her Altered Artes and skills, that is.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint:
** Her innocence, along with her sheltered upbringing, has left her clueless about sexually related matters and innuendo. If you choose to have Judith seduce the guard at Heliord, she lures him away from his post by promising to show him a "good time". Estelle fails to understand what Judith means, which causes Karol to stare in disbelief.
** ''Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 3'' goes further to show her innocence, during [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxACkO-evOo a skit]] where Asbel teaches her how to improve her swords stance - by standing behind her with his hands on ''her hips''. Estelle doesn't realize how it looks, or why Flynn becomes outraged when he sees how Asbel is holding her. Her attempt to explain the situation only ''[[DiggingYourselfDeeper makes it worse]]'':
-->'''Estelle''': ''(matter-of-factly)'' "Asbel is teaching me a technique. He was just telling me that [[InnocentInnuendo I need to position my hips]] properly."
-->'''Flynn''': ''(steps back incredulously)'' "Position... ''your hips?!''"
-->'''Jade''': ''([[TheGadfly smirks]]) "I see, I see. So he was teaching you how to move your body, was he?"
-->'''Flynn''': ''(steps back further)'' Teaching... ''your BODY?!''"
-->'''Estelle''': ''(still not getting it)'' "Yes. I need to [[ThatCameOutWrong spread my legs pretty far, lean in with my hips like this, and apply force to-"]]
-->''(Flynn immediately drags Asbel away to lecture him)''
* CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler: As a Child of the Full Moon, she has the ability to use Artes without a blastia. However, her ''mere existence'' causes the world to slowly die by disrupting the aer flow.]]
* CuteBookworm: Adores reading and libraries, and will often wax lyrical about things that remind her of her studies.
* TheCutie: She's cute, SpoiledSweet, and so utterly adorable that she [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDqM4oOxWXs became giddy over Rita pretending to eat her words]] and ran off to tell everybody.
* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife: Throughout the 2nd act and part of the 3rd, Estelle's actions and choices derive from her looking for where she fits. [[spoiler: In the end she finds it in becoming a writer.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: Estelle requires a fair amount of micro-management to get the most out of, so be prepared spend an equivalent amount of time setting her AI in the Tactics Menu. If you do so, however, she becomes one of ''the'' most effective healers in the entire series.
* DistressedDamsel: She spends a good chunk of time in the 2nd act in danger for good reasons.
* TheDitherer: For a vast majority of the game, she has a hard time deciding what to do or what she really cares about. Judith calls her out on this a couple of times for dragging the party around on her whims and she feels ''really'' bad about it.
* DitzyGenius: She's very good at book knowledge and casting, but her social skills are pretty bad and her CloudCuckooLander tendencies can make it worse.
* DuelBoss: [[spoiler: Thanks to being brainwashed and crazy, Yuri has to fight her.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Though she doesn't have much luck with animals (as noted below), she's quite good with children.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Subverted. She really, really tries, but for one reason or another, it doesn't work out for her. Sometimes with tragic consequences, sometimes just plain hilarious, such as her skits with Repede.
* GratuitousFrench:
** Her strongest non-arte attack involves her counting to three in French, and one of her physical artes uses a musical term and a dancing term (respectively) both created by the French. Both conveniently combine to make a decent combo in-game.
--> '''Estelle''': "Un, Deux, Trois! Marche Waltz!"
** Lampshaded with vichyssoise, which [[InsistentTerminology she insists on calling so]] despite everyone else just calling it potato soup. TruthInTelevision, as in reality, it really was just a random New York dish hotels gave a French Name for pizzazz.
* TheHeart: The entire party rallies around her, especially once they learn of [[LastOfHerKind her true nature]] and the hell [[spoiler: Alexei]] puts her through.
* IChooseToStay: If you complete Estelle's [[SidequestSideStory character sidequest chain]] in Halure, she has an epiphany and tells the others that she's decided to live there, rather than return to the Imperial Palace. The final scenes during the end credits show she's made Halure her new home, where she [[spoiler: reads and writes children's stories]].
* IconicItem: Her Rod and Queen of Hearts shield. The Rod grants her the "Special" skill which allows her to use her [[LimitBreak Mystic Artes]] while the Queen of Hearts is her best defensive shield, but overshadowed by her more all around shield, Arredoval.
* IgnoredEpiphany: Zigzagged, but ultimately averted with Ba'ul. It's revealed that her healing artes are lethal to Entelexeia -- as they found out the hard way with [[spoiler: Belius]]. When she sees Ba'ul in pain, Estelle is prompted to try to save him, [[ChronicHeroSyndrome out of habit]], until Judith bars her from getting closer to him. This finally makes Estelle realize just how harmful her powers were, despite her good intentions.
* ImpliedLoveInterest: It's heavily implied that Rita has a girl-crush on Estelle, which gets lampshaded repeatedly in multiple skits. It was further implicated when Creator/BandaiNamco put on the live-action ''"Tales of Ristelle"'' skit, in which Zelos' VA pointedly asks Rita's VA about it.
-->'''Zelos''': ''(to Rita)'' "But really though, isn't it true that you and that Estelle gal [[RomanticTwoGirlFriendship are really close?"]]
-->'''Rita''': ''(shyly)'' "What?? It.. [[BadLiar it isn't really like that."]]
-->'''Zelos''': "THERE IT IS!! Rita-chan's {{TSUNDERE}} PERSONALITY!! It's so cuu~uute!!"
* InSeriesNickname: Her full name is "Estellise", though to Brave Vesperia she's "Estelle." To make no mention of the canon "Ristelle" nickname for her and Rita...
* InvincibleHero: If you're playing the Xbox 360 version, the Eternal Support + Force Field glitch renders her completely invulnerable for the duration of the battle. And if you've unlocked "Holy Rain" to go with it, she can wipe out entire fields of enemies with absolute impunity.
* JourneyToFindOneself - The entire premise for [[spoiler:the suicide mission of finding Phareoh.]]
* KingIncognito: Even though her reveal as royalty was only a surprise to Karol. It's likely that the player won't be surprised either, given [[PrincessesPreferPink her design]].
* LadyOfWar: In her element she's elegant and she certainly is ever so in battle as well.
* LadyOfAdventure: Grows into this.
* LastOfHerKind: [[spoiler: Though she isn't technically the last, she's the only remaining Child of the Full Moon that can do something with her power.]]
* LightEmUp: Her only elemental attacks involve the light element. The [=PS3=] version gives her a [[BlowYouAway few]] [[PlayingWithFire more]], though, but this one still takes priority.
* LimitBreak:
** Sacred Penance is a powerful light-elemental blast of energy that also heals the party a significant amount.
** Ultimate Elementia utilizes the power of [[spoiler:the four Elemental Spirits the party creates in Part 3]] to pummel the enemy with devastating waves of each element.
* LiteralMinded: Though she drops the habit soon after getting out of the castle.
* MagicKnight: She and Flynn share this role since they are both sword fighters with access to attack and healing artes. Although Estelle leans more towards the magic side since she gets more spells and weapons related to her magic.
* MeaningfulName: A meaningful nickname, anyway. ''Estel'' is a word in [[Franchise/TolkiensLegendarium Elvish]] meaning "trust" or "hope". Both are qualities Estelle never loses, even after her CharacterDevelopment via TraumaCongaLine. When Yuri or Raven are waxing nihilistic, Judith is reducing herself to nothing more than her self-appointed job as a blastia destroyer, or Rita is in a particularly misanthropic mood, count on Estelle to bring them out of it with her cheerfulness and hope for a better tomorrow.
* {{Meganekko}}: Can be turned into one via synth item, and wears glasses while writing in the ending.
* MistakenForRomance: Two separate skits have Yuri and Raven ask her if she has a crush on Flynn, Estelle tells them [[JustFriends they have the wrong idea]] each time. Karol instead thinks she's in a LoveTriangle with Yuri and Flynn, which Yuri denies.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:After she accidentally drives Belius mad and when the party is forced to mercy-kill her.]]
* NiceGirl: So much so, that she suffers from ChronicHeroSyndrome. Which is usually an admirable trait, except in her case, where it becomes a double-edged sword (noted in the IgnoredEpiphany entry).
* PluckyGirl: Her status as TheDitherer and HeroicBSOD moment aside, nothing really keeps her down long.
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: She cannot conceal her nature as a PrincessClassic, but she definitely holds her own in a fight.
* PrincessClassic: [[ReconstructedTrope Reconstructed]]. Being a classic princess in personality and tastes doesn't mean she's also not a PrettyPrincessPowerhouse. And her nature as that also transforms her into a PoliticallyActivePrincess once she gets enough confidence and experience to want to do what she can. [[spoiler: An optional scene will grant her a weapon that comes with being the Vice-Emperor, which makes her the second most politically strong person in the empire.]]
* PrincessesPreferPink: Most obviously in her default outfit.
* ProperLady: Very polite, even to dogs like Repede or random strangers.
* RebelliousPrincess: Yuri meets her doing her best to escape her own guards just so she can warn Flynn of being in danger. Prolonged contact with Yuri and the rest turns her into more of one as she starts developing a proper backbone and sense of what she really wants to do.
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: With Rita, to where it borders on being a case of HideYourLesbians, as the game drops every possible hint short of outright stating it - from having both Karol and Judith lampshade how close she and Rita are, to a guy named [[YuriFan "Yuri"]] coining them [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5yexLrUfXI "Ristelle".]]
* RoseHairedGirl: Hers is bright cherry pink. The [[BonusDungeon Necropolis of Nostalgia]] reveals that this is a side effect [[spoiler: being a Child of the Full Moon.]]
* RoyaltySuperPower: [[spoiler: Her Child of the Full Moon status is from her royal bloodline, as the remaining Children of the Full Moon one thousand years ago were the ones to found the Empire to watch over blastia distribution.]]
* ShelteredAristocrat: She had no real knowledge of the outside world, other than what she had read in books. It isn't until her journey with Yuri that she's made to realize that much of what she'd read was either outdated, or incorrect. So Rita makes her fill in the pages of their collectipedia, [[spoiler: to educate her]].
* ShipperOnDeck: Once she finds out about Karol's crush on Nan, she starts needling him for details about their relationship and says she's rooting for him.
* ShipTease: With [[NobleMaleRoguishMale Yuri, Flynn]], and Rita. Mostly with Yuri (who is the hero willing to do anything for her) and Rita (being Rita's first friend and having so many close moments with her, it's almost hilarious), since Flynn's out for most of the game.
* SkirtOverSlacks: Her default outfit.
* SpoiledSweet: Lived a life of comfort and elegance in the castle. Still a pretty kind and loving gal.
* StoneWall: She has the highest defense stat in the game, along with several defensive spells and multiple support skills that further mitigate damage. (After all, apart from Flynn, she's the only party member with a shield!) However, she can ''still'' get stunlocked when she [[ArtificialStupidity runs into the fray and melees,]] since she may not always have the health to make her a proper tank.
* SwordBeam: Her Star Stroke arte sends one along the ground, similar to the ''Tales'' classic Demon Fang.
* TechnicalPacifist: She hates having to hurt people; however, she knows that world outside the barriers, and at time even inside them, is too dangerous to not fight and not everyone is willing to sit down and talk.
%%* TheOjou
* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: After she's called out multiple times for her tendency to [[TheDitherer dither]], she attempts to settle her contract with Brave Vesperia so she won't feel the guilt of dragging her friends all over the world for her own selfish desires. The rest of the party, of course, subverts this by having no intention of letting her march off into the desert by herself, and Yuri even jokes that they all figured it would have turned out this way.
* TookALevelInBadass: Arguably [[spoiler:post-rescue]]; it's subtle, but afterward [[spoiler:she no longer seems to be the same girl wanting to make graves for every monster she killed]].
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: Yuri spoiled her royal status ''before the game was even out''. He distinctly refers to her as "hime-sama" (or: "princess"). Of course, even in the game, [[TheUnReveal it was pretty damn obvious and everybody really saw it coming]]. [[IdiotHero Except for Karol]].
* TraumaCongaLine: [[spoiler: During part two, she finds out the hard way that her healing artes cause Entelexeia to go insane, then later learns that [[ApocalypseMaiden using her powers could destroy the world]]. ''Then'' she gets kidnapped by Schwann/Raven and [[MindRape tortured]] into doing the bidding of Alexei, and [[DespairEventHorizon sent over the edge]] by his hand that she begs Yuri to ''[[ICannotSelfTerminate kill her.]]'' Thankfully, she recovers.]]
* TrueBlueFemininity: In her introduction in the game, as well as in ''[[TheMovie The First Strike]]'', she's wearing blue.
* WeaponOfChoice: RoyalRapier or SimpleStaff, and [[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe Luckily Her Shield Will Protect Her]].

[[folder:Karol Capel]]
->Voiced by: Creator/KumikoWatanabe (JP), Creator/JulieAnnTaylor (EN)

[[quoteright:260:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/karol.jpg]]

A KidSamurai that Yuri and Estelle find wandering through the forest, he proves to be more well-traveled than either of them, showing himself knowledgeable on many topics ranging from the monsters that infest the world to the inner workings and politics of the guilds. He boasts that he is a member of the Hunting Blades, a guild that exterminates monsters, but is actually a veteran of many different guilds. He looks up to Yuri as a BigBrotherMentor and steadily takes many [[TookALevelInBadass levels in badass]] throughout their journey.
----
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: {{Adorkable}}? Check. Carries around a weapon that's bigger than him? Check. Upbeat and adorably cheerful? Check.
* BadassAdorable: Don't let his appearance fool you. That hammer he carries around isn't just for show.
* BagOfHolding: Karol keeps '''''EVERYTHING''''' in that bag of his - from bugspray, an endless supply of baseballs, a wind-up toy robot, and even ''live fish''. And, of course, it's how he lugs his trusty hammer around. Once you get the King Bag, [[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever Ba'ul]] says that [[UpToEleven he could probably fit in there]]. Note that Ba'ul is big and strong enough to carry an entire cruise ship.
* BatterUp: Invoked with "Reaper Knock", which has him pull out a baseball and smack it across screen. The fully charged version (performed by holding down the attack button) produces a cluster of them, hits them further, and inflicts greater damage.
* BlowYouAway: Ultra Punishment Typhoon is one of his Burst Artes. During a lvl.1-2 Overlimit, he simply spins in place and attaks all targets in a limited 360º radius. At lvl.3, he whips up a mini-tornado around his body, which increases its AreaOfEffect. But at lvl.4, Karol generates a full-blown tornado, which significantly widens its attack radius and causes him and all enemies caught in it to rise higher with each hit. However, Karol is automatically dazed afterwards, due to making himself dizzy.
* BrattyHalfPint: Pre-character development, he has a SmallNameBigEgo and constantly wants attention, only to [[CowardlyLion run away when the party needs him most]]. The group, particularly [[BigBrotherMentor Yuri]], not changing their interactions with him despite that is a major role in how his CharacterDevelopment moves forward.
* ButtMonkey:
** Poor kid basically sums it up himself, when he asks "[[LeaningOnTheFourthWall ...why]] ''[[DesignatedVictim me]]''?"[[note]]after being blown up by Rita, when they first meet her[[/note]].
** He gets blown up by Rita on two separate occasions: 1.) when they first meet her, she assumes he's a thief [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uomWFdckE7I and fries him.]] 2.) She failed to realize Karol was disguised as one of the soldiers at Heliord, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFLRYDUcvik so she nuked him along with the others.]] The second is optional however - it depends on whether you pick Karol to be disguised as a knight during that point.
** If you wear his cafeteria worker costume long enough, it'll trigger a skit where [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIstyaGLRdA Raven tricks Karol]] into doing his share of the cooking for him.
** The player can also subject Karol to humiliation by making him enact his own plan to seduce the guard at Heliord. Which [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wai89p-Lhy0 requires him to dress up as a girl]], though it unlocks the disguise as a costume for him, later.
** And you'll get a skit for making him wear his spa costume, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9TynNIfRlY which makes the girls steer clear of him.]]
* ChargedAttack: With the appropriate skill equipped, his attacks can be charged to deal more damage.
* CombatMedic: Bizarrely enough. He can smash the ground to create healing circles, and his water Burst Arte makes him pound a massive one that can heal a large radius. This even comes into play in a Secret Mission: [[spoiler:against Zagi 4, Karol can use Nice Recovery Smash to heal away the poison Zagi is using to empower himself, an interesting example of having to play medic towards the ''enemy''.]]
* CowardlyLion:
** Karol keeps joining guilds, only to quit shortly afterward when his cowardice sends him running for the hills. Traveling with Brave Vesperia allows him to [[TookALevelInBadass take a level in badass]], but he still retains his nervousness in battle.
** He even has several skills that reference this cowardice, ranging from shortening battle escape times to being able to restore HP and MP while "playing dead." One of these skills is even called Coward, and it prevents surprised encounters (which force you to use the people at the end of your inactive party). Ironically, it doesn't work unless Karol is in the ''active'' party.
** The pinnacle of this is Karol gaining Bravior, which has an 11 point skill used for changing his stance to show his growth. Not completely useless, as it shortens the lag in between arte usage.
* DeadpanSnarker: Not as much as Yuri, obviously, but he still has his moments.
* DishingOutDirt: Both his first Arte and his first Mystic Arte have a definitive "earth" theme to them, much like [[VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia Presea]], another Team Symphonia under-age Mighty Glacier.
* DoggedNiceGuy: To Nan. Funnily enough, he ''is'' succeeding, [[ObliviousToLove but he doesn't know it]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the [=PS3=] version, he can be seen atop a tower in Deidon Hold.
* {{Expy}}: Of [[VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia Lloyd]] in terms of appearance and personality. Invoked in the [=PS3=] version, where he can unlock his costume and even acts exactly like him in the appropriate skit.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: To the Guilds. Karol is a laughingstock among them, due to all the times he's been kicked out by different groups for desertion. When he meets up with Nan, she tells him he's been fired from the Hunting Blades too, for the same reason. He completely [[AvertedTrope averts]] this with Brave Vesperia and the rest of his TrueCompanions, who accept his CowardlyLion tendencies (if tease him over it).
* GenderBlenderName: Though it seems like a boy being named "Karol" is a case of this, this is actually a subversion: "Karol" is the West Slavic version of Charles or Carl.
* GlacierWaif: A male example.
* HumongousMecha: His second Mystic Arte in the [=PS3=] version is one.
* IconicItem: While not as blatant as most examples of this trope and more downplayed, Karol's red neckerchief appears in most of his costume titles except for three of them (and two of them actually make perfect sense for why he didn't wear it- in one he's disguised as a girl, and in the other he's wearing nothing but two towels). Karolow X, a robot designed to look just like Karol, is also shown to wear one just like it.
* IdiotHero: PlayedWith. He knows a lot about Guilds, geography, lockpicking and a lot of info useful for the journey. However, he's gullible, [[TooDumbToLive tempts fate WAY too much]], and isn't particularly book smart. All of this is [[JustifiedTrope justified]] due to his age.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: It's made clear on his first meeting that Karol wants more than anything to be awesome and brave. [[CowardlyLion He]] [[TookALevelInBadass pulls]] [[YouShallNotPass it]] [[CharacterDevelopment off]].
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Karol's sub-weapon is a bag of hammerspace. At least it has a [[AmplifierArtifact Bodhi Blastia]] attached to it, which allows usage of artes.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: He tries ''so hard'' to act like Guild hopping is a good thing. Being a [[KidHero kid]], he's not very good at it.
* InfinityMinusOneSword: Bravior, a SwordOfPlotAdvancement and his strongest sword in the original game. He gained it by chance on the Blade Drifts of Zopheir, and it gives him a skill which shows his CharacterDevelopment.
* JackOfAllTrades:
** He might be a MightyGlacier in-combat, but out of it, he's a competent mapmaker, monster analyst, and handyman, with a wealth of knowledge about the Union and many areas of the world. Justified, since he probably picked up his skills from his constant guild-hopping.
** A partial in-combat example as well, as he has aerial arts (Havoc Thunder and Rending Drop), a ranged art (Reaper Knock), a self-buff (Coil Beat), enemy debuffs (Destructo Booing, Destructo Spider Web, etc.), and healing arts (Nice Healing Smash series). He's the second most versatile party member after Raven!
* {{Keet}}: He's a pretty cheerful kid.
* KidHero: He is only twelve.
* KidSamurai: Has a few qualities of this, being inexperienced yet skilled in some manner at the start.
* TheLancer: Qualifies for this trope in terms of the story due to his personality differences with Yuri and the fact that he's always either the first the one to back him up, or the first one to disagree with him. Combat-wise, he's more of TheBigGuy.
* LimitBreak:
** Overlord Reign Impact pummels the target with several heavy weapons before Karol grabs the last one to deliver a blow so powerful it cracks the earth.
** Mega Flashbang Ultra X Bomber (yes, really) utilizes a tiny robot the party finds in a sidequest, except the robot assembles into a HumongousMecha that blows up the entire battlefield with a single massively powerful blast.
* MightyGlacier: Team Symphonia continues their tradition of pre-pubescent tanks. Karol hits hard, but, most likely thanks to his massive weapons, is the slowest.
* MrExposition: Despite his age, Karol acts like this in the early game and continues to provide information about guilds throughout.
* NiceGuy: Karol may be a bit sarcastic and spacey at times, but he's got a good heart.
* ObliviousToLove: As seen when he enters the 100-Man Melee in the colosseum, which ends with a rematch against Nan. When Karol asks why he has to fight her again, she says it's because [[BestHerToBedHer she likes strong men]]. Naturally, he has no idea what she's talking about.
-->'''Karol: (exasperated)''' "Why do you have fight me, to prove yourself??"
-->'''Nan: (blushing)''' [[WomenPreferStrongMen "I-I like strong men]], like Master."
-->'''Karol: (clearly confused)''' "Okay... but [[ComicallyMissingThePoint what does that have to do with us fighting?"]]
-->'''Nan: (exasperated)''' '''[[BelligerentSexualTension "Take a guess, YOU IDIOT!!"]]'''
-->'''Karol: (in frustration)''' "I DON'T KNOOOW!"
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Karol may not look it, at first, but he's remarkably strong for his age and diminutive stature. Between moves like Havoc Thunder and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmmNjEV5F-w Overlord Reign Impact]], [[PersonOfMassDestruction he usually leaves the coliseum floor in ruins.]]
* ThePowerOfFriendship: Part of his development has him learning about this and applying it into massive team efforts.
* PuppyLove: Karol and Nan are both 12 years old, but the game makes it clear that they're crushing on each other... though he seems unaware that she likes him back.
* StoneWall: Though he doesn't have as many guard-augmenting skills as Estelle, his high HP and defense make him an ideal tank.
* ShoutOut: Karol has two skills, [[VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia "Combatir"]] and [[VideoGame/TalesOfLegendia "Raynard"]], which allows him to do more damage when equipped with an axe or a hammer, respectively.
* ShockAndAwe: Havoc Thunder spikes the ground with a ligthning enhanced strike.
* SlapSlapKiss: With Nan, as seen in the ObliviousToLove entry.
* SmallNameBigEgo: He seems to think having been in a bunch of guilds is a good thing. It's not. Though this attitude of his [[BeneathTheMask is a facade]].
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Kids generally are incapable of wielding weapons [[{{BFS}} bigger than they are]], let alone using them effectively. For another example, just see his Mystic Arte under PintsizedPowerhouse.
* TemptingFate: While it's true that Rita clocks him every once in awhile, there ''are'' times when he brings it on himself. Like [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pv932YhU8yc deliberately trying to startle her]] after she'd just said she was used to fighting.
* TokenMiniMoe: the youngest playable character at age 12.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** [[spoiler: When he rescues the rest of the party in the Blade Drifts of Zopheir.]]
** Also when he first learns his Mystic Arte -- he gets it in a sidequest where he trains using the sword of his hero. The sidequest comes shortly after [[spoiler:he watches his childhood hero commit suicide right before his eyes]], thus giving him the needed motivation to start training.
* WeaponOfChoice: {{BFS}}, DropTheHammer, and AnAxeToGrind.
* WholesomeCrossdresser: [[spoiler: If chosen for the seduction mission]].
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Bugs in his case; interestingly enough, the reveal of his phobia also has him learn the "Bug Breath" arte that's super effective against bug monsters.
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: Gets this during the second arc; after dealing with the fallout of [[spoiler: Belius's death, the reveal of Yuri's VigilanteMan actions, Judith destroying their blastia and revealing herself to be the "dragon freak", and the Don's death]], Karol finally comes to a decision and gives a speech in that regard. It's one of his first real big steps forward in CharacterDevelopment and becoming the badass he wants to be.
* YouShallNotPass: In one of his most memorable scenes (if not ''the'' most memorable), with the rest of the party paralyzed and a giant monster bearing down on them, Karol decides to invoke this trope rather than abandon his friends to a grisly death, even though it's clear from his expression that this battle is also probably a case of BringMyBrownPants.

[[folder:Rita Mordio]]
->Voiced by: Creator/RikaMorinaga (JP), Creator/MichelleRuff (EN), Creator/LuciChristian (''The First Strike'' prequel film, EN)

[[quoteright:255:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rita.jpg]]

A talented, feisty mage from Aspio. Yuri at first believes she stole the blastia from the lower district, but it just turns out the thief was using her last name to come across as "legitimate". She joins the companions to continue her blastia research, and fights with a scroll and magic.
----
* AdaptationInducedPlothole: In the game itself, Rita didn't know about the existence of aer krenes until Alexei sent her to investigate the one at Keiv Moc, and needed [[spoiler: Duke]] to explain its function. In the anime prequel (''The First Strike''), [[SuddenlyAlwaysKnewThat she already knew about them.]]
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Once the reveal of Estelle's nature as a Child Of The Full Moon is given, Rita's goal for the rest of the game is to save her.
* AmbiguouslyGay: She becomes very "dere-dere" around Estelle and seems quite interested in her, to say the least (covered extensively in the [[HoYay/TalesOfVesperia Ho Yay]] page).
* AnimalEaredHeadband: Her waitress outfit gives her a cat-ear headband, and a bunny-ear headband is available for everyone.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Her Levitation skill. Even with the Risky Ring to solve the TP consumption problem, it basically negates the more useful Resilience skill. All the same, a flying spellcaster never gets old.
* BadassAdorable: She's a fairly cute young teenage girl, but is also one of the most powerful mages in the entire ''series'', with several game-breaking strategies and spells.
* BadassBookworm: She's seen reading when she levels up and even hits people with her book at times.
* BigSisterInstinct: Off and on towards Karol, starting in Keiv Moc. Has shades of BigSisterBully, as well, despite not being his actual sister.
* BlackMagicianGirl: One of the most troperrific examples.
* BlatantLies: During the cutscene where Yuri and the others are preparing to leave Aspio, Rita says she's coming with them. When Yuri asks why, she tells him she wanted to inspect the barrier blastia at Halure, though her real reason was her sudden interest in [[spoiler: the unused bohdi blastia on Estelle's wrist]]. But when Karol says they already fixed it, Rita uses it as an excuse to insist on going with them.
* CharacterDevelopment: Subtle but it's there. At the start of the game, Rita saw Blastia as being living people, constantly referring to them with pronouns as if they were people. This was meant to show that she was sheltered from people and lacked meaningful relationships with others. Over the course of the game, Rita drops this and starts acting more sociable around the others. This is best shown when it came to Judith destroying Blastia; early on she treated Judith's actions as if she was killing someone, but over time gradually came to realize the significance of doing so. In a side quest later involving a Blastia acting up in the Zaphias castle, Rita agrees that if she cannot fix it, Judith is free to destroy it. It's clear by the end she now appreciates other people, even if she still dislikes destroying Blastia.
* ChildMage: Spellcasting is her other forte, aside from blastia and aer research, and is so talented at it that she can cast advanced spells such as "Negative Gate" and [[spoiler: "Meteor Storm"]]. The [=PS3=] version even allows her to use [[spoiler: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL2NccksJJA Indignation]]]] as her second Mystic Arte, which is ''the'' most powerful spell in the entire series!
* TheComicallySerious: Especially during victory poses or skits: when the other party members start being silly, she's frequently the one who groans or gets exasperated at their supposed childishness.
* CompanionCube: Thanks to her lonely, orphaned childhood, she came to see blastia as her only friends. She anthropomorphizes them accordingly, bestowing them with names as she interacts with them.
* CovertPervert: Depending on what you believe Estelle found in her dresser drawer. Also seen when Rita checks her out on the sly, as they're preparing to leave Aspio.
* {{Crossdresser}}: Her [[VideoGame/TalesofRebirth Mao]] costume from the [=PS3=] version.
* CrushBlush: Seen almost anytime Estelle pays her direct attention, such as when Rita first joins them on their way to Nor Harbor, and during the following victory skit:
-->'''Estelle: (impressed)''' "Wow, Rita! That was SO cool!"
-->'''Rita: (smiles shyly, [[LuminescentBlush blushing]])''' "Really? Um... t-thanks."
-->'''Karol: (grinning)''' "Oooo~oo!"
-->'''Rita: ([[{{tsundere}} flustered]])''' "Sh-shut up, you!!"
* TheDreaded: Of Aspio; everyone freaks out when they hear Yuri is looking for Mordio.
* DeadpanSnarker: Almost as much as Yuri and usually in response to the more...quirky traits of the rest.
* DidntSeeThatComing: In the form of a Unknown Known, though in a ''good'' way! [[spoiler: She knows what apatheia is and that, in combining it with her new formula, an aer krene, and Estelle's power, she would make an aer controller that would cure Estelle's problem and possibly also help with the aer crisis. She did '''not''' foresee that the consciousness within the apatheia would awaken, forming the first Great Spirit Undine!]]
* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Rita uses Raven as her personal punching bag, usually [[PervertRevengeMode whenever he says]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfhSTz0FlkQ something]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KM78ku8SlU perverted.]] She constantly abuses Karol too. Most players with siblings have however noted that this is quite common behaviour among siblings and suits the found family theme better than if she was doing the same thing to a love interest, which is the norm.
* ElementalPowers: As the resident BlackMagicianGirl, Rita has access to all elements except [[LightEmUp Light]]. She also only has one of [[AnIcePerson Ice]] and [[BlowYouAway Wind]][[note]] respectively Freeze Lancer and her wind variation of her Mystic Drive, Fleeing Drive[[/note]]. Not to mention has series staples [[ShockAndAwe Thunder Blade]] as her single Lightning spell and, in the [=PS3=] rerelease, [[BoltOfDivineRetribution Indignation]].
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: It doesn't take the others long to pick up on [[HomoeroticSubtext Rita's interest in Estelle.]] Yuri and Karol notice it almost immediately (note the knowing look between them [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvcMjRT6np0 at 5:10-5:12 here).]] So does Judith, [[LampshadeHanging who calls Rita]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQzFDQqHHBI out on it]] when she tried make an excuse to follow Estelle back to Zaphias.
* FashionableAsymmetry: She wears a red thigh-high stocking with thin yellow stripes on her left leg and a white one that's slightly shorter on the other.
* ForgetsToEat: Implied in a skit when the whole team is getting hungry.
* GlassCannon: She can throw around ridiculously powerful magic, but otherwise is still something of a SquishyWizard no matter what.
* GogglesDoNothing: ...Neither does the lens. Or the ribbons. Or the thigh-high sock. Yep, Rita is a regular RummageSaleReject.
** Subverted by her best headpiece armor, the Elemental Goggles, which also provide resistance to four of the six elements.
* HairTriggerTemper: As part of her {{Tsundere}} character she has it. CharacterDevelopment has her move past it (and it gets [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] by the group too) but she still remains somewhat irritable.
* ImprobableAge: She started studying blastia at age 10. That was 5 years ago!
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She gradually lightens up as the game progresses; particularly after [[spoiler: Estelle saves her when the blastia malfunctioned at Heliord]]. From then on, Rita becomes kinder towards her and the others, and this is notably the point where she starts calling her "Estelle" instead of the full "Estellise".
* KindheartedCatLover: She's a bit rough around the edges, but she is very fond of felines.
* LethalChef: Though not as bad a Flynn. It's not that she can't cook, she's just too impatient to put the time or effort into it. For example, she once made a "meal" consisting of two slices of bread with a raw egg between 'em.
* LimitBreak:
** Ancient Catastrophe summons four massive elemental spheres of energy that combine their energies to hit the entire field with a massive explosion.
** Rita gets to use the VideoGame/TalesSeries classic Indignation, a singular incredibly powerful blast of lightning. It's even unlocked by reenacting its first appearance in the series, by casting the closest thing she has otherwise (Thunder Blade) on Dhaos in the 200-Man Melee.
* LittleMissBadass: She's a mere 15 years old, but is an incredibly powerful mage.
* LittleMissSnarker: Usually in regard to Raven's perversion and his childlike behavior.
* OrphansOrdeal: Several lines and skits hint that she went through this, enough of one to have no friends before she meets the rest of the group.
* PetitePride: An NPC dubs her "Flatty [=McChesterson=]." Unlike Estelle, she doesn't seem to mind, thinking large breasts just get in the way, although in the skit "The Proper and the Picky" she does seem to get sensitive about it.
* RomanticTwoGirlFriendship: See the related entry in Estelle's section.
* SamusIsAGirl: Sort of. The person who Yuri was chasing in the beginning was clearly male, but was, for whatever reason, using her name. Thus, he was still surprised when he first met Rita and discovered she was female.
* ShipTease: The game is [[HideYourLesbians none too subtle]] about her implied feelings [[ImpliedLoveInterest toward Estelle]].
* SimplifiedSpellCasting: Get her to Overlimit Level 3 and she replaces even the most long-winded incantations with "Blah, blah, blah.".
* [[TheSmartGuy The Smart Girl]]: See the TeenGenius entry.
* SpannerInTheWorks: When the party confronts Alexei in Zaude, he's surprised to see Estelle has returned to normal and wonders how it was possible, until he notices [[TeenGenius Rita]] is with them. She sees the Blastia formula he's working on and sees that he hasn't figured out how to fully awaken Zaude yet. Alexei [[HeKnowsTooMuch promptly closes his screen]] to prevent Rita from seeing anything further and openly admits that it was a mistake to overlook the world's leading authority on Blastia research.
* SquishyWizard: She's not really built for taking hits. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] due to her age and having mostly spent her time researching. She's certainly physically fit thanks to ruin exploration, but her reliance on her magic means she neglects other things.
* TeenGenius:
** She's the world's foremost authority on Blastia and Aer research, at only 15 years old, and is a fully accredited scholar on both subjects. Despite this, she doesn't know everything about either of them. She had neither seen, or even heard of an aer krene until she was sent to investigate the one at Keiv Moc, where [[spoiler: Duke]] explains their function to her.
** Rita eventually figures out how to use Dein Nomos, in conjunction with [[spoiler: Belius' apethea]] and an inactive Aer Krene, to stabilize Estelle's power so she'd no longer disrupt the planet's Aer flow. Not only does it work, she accidentally discovers how to convert [[spoiler: an apethea into a Spirit]], which becomes vital to saving the planet!
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Tomboy to Estelle's Girly Girl.
* TomeOfEldritchLore: She always keeps an oversized book strapped around her waist like a fanny-pack, which she opens when casting certain spells. She's also seen reading it whenever she levels up.
* TransparentCloset: The live-action [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwC5VHMaI3Y "Tales of Ristelle"]] skit hangs a massive lampshade on it, by having the Japanese VA for [[Characters/TalesOfSymphonia Zelos]] trick Rita's VA into showing up [[BlatantLies by telling her Estellle would be present.]] Rita calls him out for tricking her, while Zelos and [[Characters/TalesOfXillia Milla]] take turns needling her for being tsundere toward Estelle.
* {{Tsundere}}: Lampshaded several times in-game and in the aforementioned live-action skit. Rita is typically abrasive, outspoken, and [[BrutalHonesty brutally honest]]; especially when she's annoyed. But Estelle draws out her softer side and becomes her first real friend, which causes Rita to develop a ''[[ImpliedLoveInterest very strong]]'' [[RomanticTwoGirlFriendship attachment to her.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: She doesn't have much respect for Repede when she first meets him, often referring to him as, "dog". But by the time their group reaches Zaude, [[FireForgedFriends she's warmed up to him.]] Rita's usually the one who'll call out whenever Repede needs healing during a fight, and Repede is usually the first to express agreement with Rita about Raven. He's also the one Rita turns to in the "Manly Musk" skit, even though Yuri is right there, and Repede's AI is usually the one to run to Rita's aid if she's attacked when casting.
* WeaponOfChoice: WhipItGood (in whip, scarf, and scroll forms), KillerYoYo, and ThrowTheBookAtThem.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: Ghosts. While Rita will normally take things in stride (or just blow it up), ghosts are the only thing to freak her out. Needless to say, boarding a ghost ship is her worst nightmare...
* ZettaiRyouiki: On one leg in her default outfit, and in various incarnations in her alternates. Her waitress costume is around a grade B.

[[folder:Raven]]
->Voiced by: Creator/EijiTakemoto (JP), Joe J. Thomas (EN)

[[quoteright:220:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raventov.jpg]]

A 'Fishy Old Man', Raven is the right-hand man of Don Whitehorse, leader of the Five Master Guilds. Yuri initially encounters Raven in a jail cell next to his. Here, Raven gives Yuri the key to his cell so he can escape. The party later encounters him in Capua Nor, where he tricks them into going the opposite way towards Ragou (it works out in the end). He eventually joins up with the party properly in order to help out the kids he's grown fond of, as well as keep an eye on them for Altosk's sake.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Japan-exclusive supplementary content (a manga and a drama CD) goes in-depth about his past [[spoiler:as a young noble who joined the Knights and grew close to Casey. They also reveal his birth name: Damuron.]]
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Raven's actual ethnicity is unknown, but he has a tanned complexion which may, or may not be his natural skin tone.
* BackFromTheDead: Done twice:
** Late in the game, he finally comes clean about his past when he tells the others that he [[spoiler: died during The Great War[[note]]which took place 10 years prior to the start of the game[[/note]]. Alexei reanimated his corpse [[LiteralChangeOfHeart by substituting Raven's heart with a modified Hermes Blastia]]]], which was the reason he was [[spoiler:indebted to Alexei and agreed to help him spy on Estelle]].
** Raven surprises Brave Vesperia again, when they find him waiting for them aboard the Heracles, after they thought he had perished [[spoiler: [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat when Baction seemingly collapsed while he was still inside]]]]. The [=PS3=]/''Definitive Edition'' actually explains how he did it.
* BackStory: Unusually for a Tales game, he stands out as being the only Vesperia party member to get a fully fleshed out backstory. A large chunk of it is only AllThereInTheManual through bonus materials though.
%%* BadassLongCoat
* BavarianFireDrill: He dodges a fight with the Schwann Brigade by calling them to attention and running by with Brave Vesperia while they stood ready. The Brigade is a bit embarrassed at that. [[spoiler:Subverted with the reveal that he '''is''' Schwann and did have authority over them. They may not have recognized him, but they'll still respond to his voice.]]
* BecomingTheMask: [[spoiler: Adopted his Raven persona to spy on the guilds and grew to be genuinely comfortable there. Later he used it to spy on Brave Vesperia, and wound up joining them for good.]]
%%* BewareTheSillyOnes
* [[{{Bishounen}} Biseinen]]: Ignoring the garish coat, Raven's quite nice looking for an "old man". [[spoiler: He's definitely pretty as Schwann and Damuron, though.]]
* BlowYouAway: His only elemental artes that he learns normally, except for [[DishingOutDirt Serpent]], are of the wind element.
* ChickMagnet: Rita may diss him for being a perv, but his character sidequest in Dahngrest reveals that he's ''very popular'' with the women there. Several of them come up to him and either ask him out, or ask when he's going to call them again. Once it's complete, he earns the "Lady Killer" title.
* ChivalrousPervert: For all he flirts, he's a gentleman. He doesn't flirt with Rita or Estelle much, and mostly directs attention to [[TheTease Judith]]. And in the sidequest above, he's mostly gently dissuading the ladies from going out with him, recommending they go with someone younger and nicer.
* CombatMedic: Love Shot allows him to heal himself or other party members by firing a special arrow in the air. While the amount of healing is small and it initially starts out being only able to heal one person with a single use, the move is pretty handy as it has no casting time, and with enough use is eventually able to heal up to three people at once.
* ConsummateLiar: He's gotten pretty good at it, due to years spent covering [[spoiler: his Schwann identity]]. Though his squad nearly blows his cover by addressing him by his real name in front of Yuri and the others. Raven cuts them off before they actually say it, and tells Yuri they'd gotten him confused with someone else, when he asks about it.
%%* CoolOldGuy
* CursedWithAwesome: [[spoiler: He has a blastia for a heart, making him functionally immortal as long as it never gives out, or is switched off by someone with the power to do so. Thankfully, Alexei never seems bothered to do so.]]
* DarkAndTroubledPast: [[spoiler: Most of it is in extra materials, but the short version is that the Great War was '''not''' kind to him. Having Alexei bring him back to life with a blastia for a heart, putting his life almost literally in his hands, didn't help at all.]]
* DeathSeeker: [[spoiler:His life is bound to Alexei's command, as the Commandant revived him with a blastia and forced him into servitude. Several of his actions in the game, especially as his Schwann persona, indicate that he's looking to end it all to escape from this contract. He only changes his tune when he's defeated by the party and they spare his life when he asks to settle their debts.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: [[spoiler: Happened before the game's events, when he (and his unrequited love, Casey) died in the Great War and Alexei took control of his life.]]
* DirtyOldMan:
** Though the only girl in the party he hits on is [[MsFanservice Judith]], he definitely comes off as this.
** The women in Dahngrest seem to love him for it, or in ''spite'' of it (noted in the ChickMagnet entry).
** If he and Estelle are in the party together, during one VictoryPose, he'll try to get Estelle to give him a hug. She refuses.
* EasilyForgiven: AFTER the party takes turns [[MyFistForgivesYou "forgiving" him]] [[spoiler: for handing Estelle over to Alexei]], that is. In a later scene, he tells Yuri that Estelle said she didn't want to be left out, so she [[spoiler: smacked him one too]].
* {{Expy}}: A HandsomeLech ChickMagnet who is [[ObfuscatingStupidity smarter]] than he seems at first, is the resident ButtMonkey of the group, and has HiddenDepths [[spoiler: such as being TheMole, having a DarkAndTroubledPast, and also being a DeathSeeker]]? Discard the appearance, age, and status as an old veteran and you have [[VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia Zelos Wilder]].
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The game leaves a couple of hints that [[spoiler: Raven is Captain Schwann and will betray the party.]]
** Very early on, Raven is Yuri's cellmate after Cumore arrests him. Following this Alexei lets him out of his cell. On a first playthrough one can assume that Raven is just an ordinary prisoner, but after TheReveal it becomes apparent that [[spoiler: Schwann lapsed into his Raven identity while on duty and Alexei is simply retrieving him to get him back on track.]]
** Before Raven joins the party, he encounters the other party members at the various towns they stop at almost as if he knows where to follow them. Who else was following the party at this time? The Schwann Brigade. How would Raven know where to find them? [[spoiler: Because of he is the leader of the Schwann Brigade.]]
** Speaking of the Brigade, you might assume his BavarianFireDrill on them only worked because [[GoldfishPoopGang they're massive idiots]], but the whole thing makes more sense when you realize [[spoiler:they were reacting to their boss's voice.]]
** If one is playing close enough attention they can catch on to TheReveal way in advance if they note the similarities between [[spoiler: Raven and Schwann.]] The commonality is that both of these names are references to birds, Raven being obvious and [[spoiler: Schwann being a play on "swan".]] Considering how Raven's last name is never revealed, it could also mean that it is nothing more than [[spoiler: an alias]].
* GratuitousItalian: Two of Raven's artes, Arrivederci and Inverno, are Italian words (for "Goodbye" and "Winter", respectively).
* GrumpyOldMan: Although he's only thirty-five, he gets invoked with the "Old Man" nickname by the other, much younger guild members and whines often about not being able to keep up with them physically on their long journeys. In the original Japanese script, they refer to him by a slanderous term for a middle aged man. No similar word exists in English, so he gets the Old Man nickname instead, which is only slightly strange given his definitely-not-old age. It is worth noting that it's a trend for the 35 year old party member to be considered "old" in a Tales game.
* HandsomeLech: Not that anyone in the party considers him handsome...
* HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday: There are a few skits where Raven notes he's not interested in cooking for the guys, or giving them a [[MakesSenseInContext piggyback]]. Yuri even teases him in one skit when Raven implies that Estelle's concern for Yuri is because she's 'grown close' to him. Yuri then points out that Raven cares about him as well, so they must have grown close too. Raven of all people, then seems awkward.
* HeCleansUpNicely: While Raven isn't ugly he is noticably scruffy and scraggly, yet he looks composed and refined in his [[spoiler:Schwann]] outfit.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler: Shortly after he is outed as TheMole, he joins your side for real.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler: He holds up the roof of Baction so the party can escape before it collapses. In the original Xbox 360 version, it is never quite explained how he survived, but in the UpdatedRerelease, he tells Flynn that his brigade (Leblanc, Adecor, and Boccos) pulled him out.]]
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Even [[spoiler: while he was a spy]] he honestly did care for the group and in particular is genuinely sad about [[spoiler: the Don having to commit {{Seppuku}}]].
* IHaveManyNames: Raven, [[spoiler:Schwann]], and [[spoiler:Damuron]].
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Downplayed, but when he first joins the party in Keiv Moc, Raven shows off some pretty impressive archery skills.
* IOweYouMyLife:
** [[spoiler: A darker version. Yuri states that Raven's life belongs to Brave Vesperia after the HeelFaceTurn and HeroicSacrifice incident in Baction. Torn up with guilt as he is about betraying them, Raven accepts this, in spite of his DeathSeeker tendencies.]]
** He was also [[spoiler: working for Alexei as Schwann due to believing in this and because of a LeonineContract.]]
* JackOfAllStats: Before Flynn was added in the different ports, Raven was the most versatile party member you could have. He has several melee artes, can go long-range physical with his bow artes, is the main source of wind damage spellcasting in the party while still having other elements to use as well, and can even heal with Love Shot. Of course, Estelle was a better healer, Rita was a better spellcaster, and Yuri, Judith, and Repede were better offensive wise, but he still was a very versatile character who worked well at end game.
* LeonineContract: [[spoiler: He's being forced to work for Alexei, who can supposedly kill him at any time.]]
* LetsGetDangerous [[spoiler: As Schwann.]] Also, whenever he uses his [[LimitBreak Mystic Arte]], since [[spoiler:it [[CastFromHitPoints burns his own life energy away]].]]
* LikeYouWereDying: [[spoiler: One of Raven's enter battle quotes after Baction: "Fight like I'm gonna die, huh?". He becomes much less of a DeathSeeker after the events of Baction, and has gained a new lease on life by the end.]]
* LimitBreak:
** Blast Heart utilizes the power of [[spoiler:his blastia heart]] to blow away surrounding enemies with waves of energy.
** Much less threatening to his own life is Crisis Rain, which utilizes his morphing fighting styles (between close-combat and ranged) to trap the enemy with a powerful physical strike so he can rain dozens of bolts of energy upon them.
* LiteralChangeOfHeart: [[spoiler: Alexei replaced Raven's heart with a modified Hermes Blastia that draws power from his lifeforce, rather then aer]].
* LoadBearingHero: [[spoiler: When holding up the ceiling at Baction so the rest of the party can escape.]]
* MagicKnight: Capable of using both combat Artes and magic Artes. He also gets a UselessUsefulSpell and [[TimeStandsStill Time Stop]] later on, making him something of a [[TheRedMage Red Mage]]-lite.
* ManChild: ...and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6KsKa7BUMU not ashamed to admit it]], as seen during several of the game's cooking related skits, where he complains about having to eat food he doesn't like.
-->'''Yuri:''' "Repede's making fun of you, Old Man. He says you're a disgrace to humans. You're the oldest one here... Aren't you ashamed of yourself?"
-->'''Raven: (shamelessly)''' [[AtLeastIAdmitIt "No way. I'm a poor excuse for a grown-up."]]
-->'''Yuri: ([[DeadpanSnarker deadpan]])''' "Sheesh, listen to ''him''."
* MeaningfulName: Ravens are black and considered dirty, fitting since he's part of the guilds, but Raven is free and helps save the world. [[spoiler: Swans are pure white and considered noble and beautiful, fitting since he's a Captain in the Knights, but Schwann is caged by his past and nearly helped destroy the world.]]
* TheMole: [[spoiler: In both the Guild Union and your party for Alexei]].
* NoNonsenseNemesis: [[spoiler:The serious fight with Schwann is nothing like what we've come to know from Raven. While he does make one wisecrack in the beginning he makes it clear that was it.]]
* NotBrainwashed: [[spoiler: Yes, Raven really did kidnap Estelle and hand her over to Alexei of his own free will. Though he was somewhat forced to, since Alexei had control over the continuing function of his blastia heart, he admits he was entirely aware of what he was doing.]]
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Raven is quickly proven on his second appearance to be ''much'' smarter than he acts. [[spoiler: Considering he's actually Schwann, a well known and respected knight captain, and he works as TheMole as well, it's not too surprising.]]
* [[MyFistForgivesYou Our Fists Forgive You]]: Noted in the EasilyForgiven entry.
* PapaWolf: Going with the ParentalSubstitute status below, he's proven to have become very protective of Karol.
* ParentalSubstitute: To Karol, as revealed in [[spoiler: Schwann's boss fight]], provided Karol is in the active party. He also does this with Patty when she's in the party.
* PeekABangs: [[spoiler: As Captain Schwann]].
* PermaStubble: Adds to his fishy old man look.
* RealMenHateSugar: He dislikes sweets, but proudly admits in a skit that he learned to bake them to impress girls.
%%* RealMenWearPink
* SixthRanger: Somewhat; he could also fill in as TheBigGuy or TheLancer.
* TheSouthpaw: [[spoiler:Most notably in his Schwann guise]]. Less obvious normally since bow-usage is determined by eyesight rather than hand laterality, meaning that Raven wields his long-range weapon in the conventional manner.
* SplitPersonality: [[spoiler: Raven and Schwann certainly ''act'' like they're separate personalities, though it is a deliberate act on his part. Flynn calls him out on it in an optional scene in the [=PS3=]/''Definitive Edition'' version.]]
* StealthHiBye: He pops up and disappears so often that Yuri barely bothers keeping track of him after a while.
* TeamDad: In a BumblingDad fashion, to the point Karol explicitly considers him his ParentalSubstitute. That said, when he drops his [[ObfuscatingStupidity goofy act]], he's very good at supporting the rest of the team. He even dads ''Yuri'' sometimes.
* ThatManIsDead: [[spoiler:[[HeelFaceTurn "Sorry, but you buried that poor schmuck alive yourself. I'm Raven. Pleased ta meet ya."]]]]
* ThemeNaming: Raven and [[spoiler:Schwann]] are both bird names.
* ThirdPersonPerson:
** Only on occasion, but sometimes he uses 'The Great Raven' or 'Ol' Raven'.
** He also refers to [[spoiler: his other personas]] this way.
** This is a bit of TranslationConvention as in Japanese he uses the very arrogant "Ore-sama" as a personal pronoun.
* WasItAllALie: [[spoiler:The party asks this when his identity as Schwann is revealed. While they eventually realize he did care about them, they never figure out which is the real version: the goofy Raven or the knight Schwann.]]
* WeaponOfChoice: BowAndSwordInAccord with TrickArrow (normal ones, healing ones, landmine-planting ones...). This is played with in-game, as [[spoiler:he shifts his fighting style to suit the situation, much like he shifts personalities]].
* WelcomeBackTraitor: [[spoiler:He kidnaps Estelle, hands her over to Alexei, and then proceeds to fight against you to slow you down in your pursuit. After the fight, the party discover that Alexei has been blackmailing Raven with his life all along, and Raven proceeds to pull a HeroicSacrifice in order to save the lives of the party. When he returns to join them, Yuri makes it clear that he is basically now their "hostage", and owes his life to the guild.]]
* WildCard: For quite some time, no one knows how truthful he is or who's side he's on. [[spoiler: He ultimately sides with Yuri's group.]]
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: [[spoiler: After his battle with the party ends with his defeat, Alexei opts to bury the party alive, not caring that Schwann will die with them as well. Lampshaded by Yuri.]]
--->'''Yuri''': This guy is even more twisted than I thought.

[[folder:Judith]]
->Voiced by: Creator/AyaHisakawa (JP), Creator/MeganHollingshead (EN)

[[quoteright:225:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/judith.jpg]]

A Krityan aerial specialist that fights with a BladeOnAStick and wears very little clothing. Judith actually first appears as an armored dragon rider who sporadically appears before the party and destroys blastia, to Rita's fury. Circumstances force her to abandon the armor and dragon when Yuri goes to assault Barbos, and Yuri and company join forces with her (though she keeps her identity as the "dragon freak" a secret from everyone except Yuri). Though seemingly whimsical and carefree, Judith ends up knowing much more than she initially lets on and becomes a valued member of Brave Vesperia.
----
* ActionGirl: She's TheBigGirl of the group and it shows; she's even a BloodKnight.
* [[AnimalsHateHim Animals Hate Her]]: Inverted. Repede takes a liking to her the moment they meet, much to Estelle's annoyance.
* ApologeticAttacker: Only once, but notable because in the battle with [[spoiler:Raven]], BloodKnight Judith is the only one to apologize for being forced to fight him.
* ArmourPiercingQuestion: "Estelle, what is it that you really want to do?" among others all directed at [[TheDitherer Estelle]].
* BadassNormal: For the same reasons as Yuri.
* BareYourMidriff: Particularly with her main outfit, though the UpdatedRerelease gives her a straight-up bikini as well.
* [[TheBigGuy The Big Girl]]: Due to her BloodKnight tendencies and the fact that she's so badass that even ''Yuri himself'' is scared by the possibility that she could rip open a monster's stomach if it ate her, she ''definitely'' qualifies. Like Karol, however, she double-teams this trope with TheLancer due to her tendency to carry the ConflictBall in the mid-game.
* BladeOnAStick: Her WeaponOfChoice.
* BloodKnight: By her own admission, nothing makes her happier (besides cooking) than when she's tearing strong enemies a new one. If the player excludes her from battle for too long, she'll actually pout, which triggers a skit where she'll mope about it. She mentions that it thrills her to see enemies in pain, and the only time her excitement level goes above "sedated" is in battle.
* BoobsOfSteel: The biggest bust among the girls of the party and the highest physical strength of them.
* BrokenBird: [[spoiler: Her father died right in front of her when she was nine, she was nearly killed in the war, and after she settled in her new home in Myorzo, she couldn't get accustomed to their way of life and was traumatized by the sight of her family's deaths. She became restless, had insomnia, and withdrew from her fellow Krytians.]]
* BrutalHonesty: Judith flat out admits that she isn't good at lying, and so tends to just say what she has on her mind. One of her more notable examples is when she [[WhatTheHellHero calls out Estelle]] for how she is essentially using Brave Vesperia for her own ends while not offering anything back like a real Guild agreement would expect, something Estelle hadn't even considered and ends up agreeing with. When Yuri speaks to her after, she reaffirms she didn't mean to be rude, but that she meant everything she said.
* BuxomIsBetter
-->'''Judith''': So you're jealous?
-->'''Estelle''': Ah--!
-->'''Judith''': If that's all it is, just wear this outfit yourself.
-->'''Estelle''': Like my boobs could fill out that top!
* CatSmile: In some promotional artwork, but not usually in-game.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Myep. Judy's not always all there in the head, and frequently says things that come off as odd or off-putting to the rest of the party.
* CombatStilettos: Taken to their logical extreme as her actual secondary weapon. Can be averted if you decide to equip sandals or slippers though.
* CoolBigSis: After warming up to her teammates, Judith becomes one for the party. She is usually bright in tone, is very reliable, and acts supportively towards her teammates, especially Karol.
* DaddysGirl: Judith's father was the [[spoiler:inventor of the Hermes blastia, and flew around the world on Ba'ul with Judith. In a dialogue with Yuri aboard the Fiertia, Judith says that her father has a huge influence on her, and she misses him a great deal.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: She is one of the hardest characters to use right, let alone play as, because her gameplay focuses on aerial combos. She can easily seem like a bad unit because of this, but if given some time to learn, can be just as good at comboing as Yuri, with the added benefit of having a unique mechanic to do so that only she has.
* DragonRider: [[spoiler: She is the armored "dragon freak" that has been flying around destroying blastia. She and her "dragon" (or rather, Entelexeia) friend Ba'ul have shared a bond ever since she befriended the lonely creature as a child.]]
* EasilyForgiven: [[spoiler: She cripples the party's only mode of transportation and abandons them in hostile territory, but everyone seems to forget this after she rejoins. Then again, the fact that she actually had a ''very'' good reason for crippling the ship (the abandonment, less so) probably helped. On the other hand, it is implied that Yuri was planning to actually kill her if she ''didn't'' have a very good reason, so it's not as though the party just wanted her back after being abandoned. ]]
* TheGadfly: Teases other people as much as Yuri. The fact that the two of them are in the same party is a horrifying combination.
* {{Gainaxing}}: During her second [[LimitBreak Mystic Arte]] in the [[UpdatedRerelease Playstation 3]] version. She's also known by [[PettingZooPeople Kowz]] as "Miss Bouncy-bouncy".
* GuideDangIt: You want to know about her backstory or obtain her InfinityPlusOneSword? Good luck, unless you've got a strategy guide to find the hidden scenes.
* HeroicSeductress: Especially if you pick her to seduce the guard blocking the elevator.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: [[spoiler: Her attitude about her blastia destroying days. She even flat out says this trope in one sidequest to Rita.]]
* KickChick: She can equip greaves as her secondary weapon, and many of her artes are flying kicks and the like.
%%* LadyOfWar
* LimitBreak:
** Radiant Moonlight hits surrounding enemies with bolts of lightning that freeze them in place so Judith can strike them with a powerful slash from her spear.
** Dragon's Moon Spear is a long-winded combo of kicks that drives the enemy high into the sky so Judith can throw her lance at them in one final powerful hit.
* {{Lunacy}}: All of her artes have [[ThemeNaming names that are based on or reference the moon]].
* MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter: [[spoiler: Hermes, the creator of the Hermes blastia, was Judith's father. She makes it her responsibility to destroy the manufactured Hermes blastia.]]
* MsFanservice: She's got [[BoobsOfSteel nice]] [[HartmanHips curves]], [[ShowSomeLeg really nice legs]] (and tendencies to [[KickChick use them]]) plus an [[BareYourMidriff exposed midriff]]. And there's the fact she loves teasing/flirting with Yuri, Raven, and just about everyone who's interested (see {{The Tease}} below).
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Of the scholarly NonActionGuy Krityan race, only Judith is shown able and willing to fight. A sidequest lampshades it and notes that if the rest of her people started at least ''trying'' out fighting skills, they probably would be pretty good at it.
* [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]]: To the point where the 200-man melee seems to ''disappoint her.''
* NervesOfSteel: Even more so than ''Yuri''. Judith never seems to really lose her cool though she can show signs of depression or hurt. It seems to be in part a Krityan thing - all of them tend to be weirdly mellow about all sorts of things.
* OrphansOrdeal: [[spoiler: Judith's father died before her very eyes when she was nine; she nearly died herself, but Ba'ul saved her, then Ba'ul took her to Myorzo, where the Kritya live. She wasn't able to get accustomed to Myorzo's lifestyles, was traumatized by the sight of losing her dad, and she suffered from insomnia. She then started learning about how much damage Hermes blastia was doing to the world, and set out on a journey to destroy it.]]
* OurElvesAreDifferent: And Judith, herself, is very different from normal Krityans, thanks to her BloodKnight and MsFanservice tendencies.
* PoorCommunicationKills: At one point in the game, Judith [[spoiler:destroys the blastia powering the party's boat just as they were making their escape from the army.]] She doesn't bother actually explaining ''why'' she did it, but the end result is that Yuri ends up tracking her down [[spoiler:with implications of killing her.]] Thankfully it ends up being subverted, as Yuri is at least willing to hear her reasoning first.
* ProfessionalGambler: At Nam Cobanda, it is revealed she made most of her traveling money before joining up with Brave Vesperia by gambling. She was quite infamous in the industry for her unflappable poker face.
* PurpleEyes: Suitable for a powerful warrior Krityan, the only one of her race more than willing to fight.
* SamusIsAGirl: Judith keeps it up longer than Rita.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She wears very skimpy clothing and frequently boasts about having a sexy body, acts very flirtaciously with Yuri and Raven, and on the hot springs, the idea of the men seeing her naked didn't seem to bother her. In fact, her large picture in skits is her purposely leaning down so you end up staring down her cleavage.
* ShesGotLegs: [[KickChick Which she uses to great effect.]]
* ShipTease: Gets some with Yuri. Though by the end of the game it has still not gone beyond simple teasing and his responses are flirty but rather bland.
* ShowgirlSkirt: Over her briefs, she wears a white, knee-length half skirt.
* SimpleStaff: Her other WeaponOfChoice. When a staff is equipped, some artes have more height to them ([=PS3=] only).
* StatuesqueStunner: She's the second-tallest party member in the game after Yuri.
* StepfordSmiler: [[spoiler: She spends the first half of the second part hiding her conflict between keeping her life's mission a secret and her newfound friendship to the party.]]
* {{Stripperiffic}}: [[LampshadeHanging As both she and everyone else is aware of]], and then subverted by her alternate outfits that are ''less'' revealing. Then the [=PS3=] rerelease pulls a DoubleSubversion by giving her ''a bikini costume'', and if that wasn't enough, her cameo costume is ''[[VideoGame/TalesOfDestiny Rutee]]''.
* SupremeChef: According to the skits, she's up there with Yuri as one of the best chefs.
* TheTease: Very much so. In one skit where she offers to wears ''even less'' than her already revealing waitress outfit...[[note]] Even though her standard outfit is actually skimpier than her waitress costume[[/note]]
-->'''Raven''': ''Oh, yes! Oh God, YES!!!''
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: She might be a BloodKnight, but she expresses interest in being called a "maiden", is a SupremeChef, and in the past was a DaddysGirl.
* UnusualEars: Has pointed elven ears and long antennae, like all Krityans.
* VigilanteMan: [[spoiler: Revealed to have been a non-killing variant for the Entelexeia, what with her destroying Hermes Blastia and all. When Estelle turns out to be an even greater threat to the world, she promises to take this trope to the extreme if there really is no hope that she can properly control and maintain her power. Thankfully, she doesn't have to.]]
* WeaponOfChoice: BladeOnAStick and SimpleStaff, alongside CombatStilettos.
%%* YouGottaHaveBlueHair
* YouShallNotPass: She says this to Nan and Tison while defending Ba'ul.

[[folder:Patty Fleur]]
->Voiced by: Creator/ChiwaSaito (JP), Creator/SandyFox (Definitive Edition) (EN)

[[quoteright:253:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pattyfleur_4428.jpg]]

A new character for the Playstation 3 UpdatedRerelease and ''Definitive Edition''. Was originally planned to be in the UsefulNotes/Xbox360 version, but was scrapped. Patty is a little girl with dreams of sailing the seas and currently on a quest to find the "Maris Stella," a legendary treasure of the Great Pirate Aifread. She talks like an old lady and claims to be the granddaughter of Aifread, though she doesn't know for sure due to having amnesia. [[spoiler:She ''is'' actually the pirate Aifread, whose crew made her drink a substance that reduced her age and gave her amnesia in exchange for saving her life.]]

She fights with an unusual StanceSystem, switching between different forms while using her [[KnifeNut knives]] and {{Handguns}}. Her artes are almost exclusively luck based.
----
* ActionGirl: She might be [[QuirkyBard quirky]] in style, but she can still fight her way through enemies.
* AscendedExtra: [[spoiler:The pirate Aifread is a recurring element in the Tales series games, either as an NonPlayerCharacter or a person of legend. As Patty is Aifread, this makes it the first time an Aifread is a PlayerCharacter.]]
* BadassAdorable: She's a spunky little girl who still travels the world by herself before joining up with Brave Vesperia permanently, and correct utilization of her luck-based moveset makes her extraordinarily powerful.
* BornLucky: She ''nearly gets eaten by a monster'' and comes out none the worse for wear. Arguably ties into her skill set as well - good luck is how she fights.
* BraidsOfAction: Has her blonde hair in two braids, invoking the GirlishPigtails version of this trope.
* CatchPhrase: "[*Says something with absolute confidence*]...Probably."
* CatSmile: Almost constantly has this expression on, since she enjoys teasing people.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuvSPiGp_zs&feature=related After being rescued from a bug monster,]] "I wasn't attacked! We were playing!"
* CovertPervert: More covert due to her [[spoiler: apparent]] age than anything.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In the Xbox 360 version, in Capua Torim's lighthouse, you can find a "woman's pirate hat" in a dresser with a name scrawled on it, although only the first two letters can be made out: "Pa". [[BlatantLies Namco Bandai flat-out denied that it had anything to do with Patty Fleur,]] [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial but, well,]] in the [=PS3=] version, surprising absolutely no one, this is in fact Patty's room.
* FightingClown: Uses playing cards, jack-in-the-boxes, ''rockets'', etc. with random effects ranging from wiping out all enemies instantly to wiping out the party instantly. Handle with care.
* FountainOfYouth: [[spoiler:She was made to consume a substance that reduced her age to 14.]]
* FriendlyFireproof: Subverted. Because of her gambling by chance nature, some of Patty's artes have the potential to harm herself and her allies in battle. This is demonstrated best in one of the outcomes of her Mystic Arte where she summons [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/TalesOfDestiny2 Barbatos Goetia]]]] as an AssistCharacter, who not only attacks your enemies, but also your party members.
* TheGadfly: More than a few skits revolve around her teasing and tricking the others - at one point even managing to convince Yuri to yell out "Critical Form" to win a bet.
* TheGambler: Her overall battle style.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: With the rest of the group. [[spoiler: However, it's worth noting she's actually the ''oldest'' in this equation.]]
* KnifeNut: Even if she's shown using guns in most videos, her actual equipable weapon is a knife.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: She doesn't remember anything of her past and her entire quest/treasure hunt is in part to regain her memories. [[spoiler:Though becomes FakingAmnesia partway through Act 2.]]
* LimitBreak: Unusually, Patty only has one Mystic Arte, but true to her nature, Summon Friends is a literal roulette wheel that randomly calls upon the power of various entities, ranging from the plain, like a flock of plain old seagulls or an oden cart merchant, to the unusual, like angelic figures or nurses, and the extravagant, like cameo appearances from [[VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss Mieu]], [[VideoGame/TalesOfEternia Quickie]], [[VideoGame/TalesOfDestiny2 Barbatos]], and even [[spoiler:her/Aifread's old first mate, Seifer]].
* LittleMissBadass: Young and kickass, if a bit cuckoo. [[spoiler: Though the "young" part is a lie, see below for details.]]
* LuckBasedMission: Meeting all her "Summon Friends" pals for her [[spoiler:"Successor to the Great Pirate's Name"]] title.
* LuckStat: And she can max it with an exclusive accessory.
* LikesOlderMen: She is rather focused on Yuri... [[spoiler: Inverted when taking into account her true age; she actually likes ''younger'' men.]]
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: She feels this way after [[spoiler:killing Seifer, even though he asked that she kill him]]. Directly after the fact, she regrets having to do it, and [[spoiler:cries over the death of her [[ShipTease friend]], with Estelle nearby to comfort her.]]
%%* NiceHat
* OlderThanTheyLook: [[spoiler: Is actually Aifread who was de-aged. She's actually around the same age as the Don.]] Even discounting the spoiler, you wouldn't expect her to actually be ''fourteen'' considering her size and appearance.
* PirateGirl: A younger version that the usual [[spoiler: or not, see the trope above.]]
* PrecociousCrush: On [[MrFanservice Yuri]]. [[spoiler: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] as she's actually [[MrsRobinson older]] than him.]]
* RecurringElement: [[spoiler: A pirate named Aifread appears in most Tales games as some notable historical figure, or rarely an NPC. As Patty's true identity is Aifread, it marks the first and only time an Aifread is a playable character.]]
* RescueRomance: With Yuri. (It's all in her head.)
* StalkerWithACrush: Has some shadings to this trope towards Yuri. PlayedForLaughs of course and she stops being so... aggressive past a certain point.
* StepfordSmiler: Goes through a lot just because she's the "granddaughter of Aifread" but refuses to let it get her down except for small moments. [[spoiler: This tendency increases when she regains her memories.]]
* SpoonyBard: [[TheGambler Are you blessed by the Random Number God]]? [[StanceSystem Can you handle the differences between her forms]]? If you can answer yes to these questions, then Patty is deadly. If you can't, she's useless.
* StanceSystem: Between Normal, Advance, Brainiac, and Critical. Normal is normal, Advance emphasizes direct attacks, Brainiac caters to range and spell casting, and Critical has the benefits of the previous two. Critical also has so much going for it, it's almost unfair.
* SupremeChef: Especially with seafood. She manages to save a restaurant from closing down by teaching them an amazing recipe, has the guilds and the council fighting over recruiting her thanks to her culinary abilities, and eventually gets a Wonder Chef costume. [[spoiler: Consider that she's an experienced, aged pirate sailing on the seas for years, and this isn't exactly out of nowhere]]. In fact, two of her artes involving cooking in the middle of battle for bonus effects!
* TalkLikeAPirate: She had a tendency to say "aye" as an affirmation and makes plenty of nautical- and marine life-based metaphors.
* WeaponOfChoice: [[KnifeNut Knives]] as her primary weapon and {{Handguns}} as her sub-weapon. Interestingly enough, she's shown using her sub-weapon in cutscenes over her knives.
* WhatTheHellHero: Should her abilities create a difficult situation in battle, the other party members will call her on it.
* VerbalTic: Uses old-person slurred speech patterns, ''nanoja'', in the Japanese version. [[spoiler:Not without reason...]]
