** Lapis Lazulis are [[HostileTerraforming used to terraform colony worlds]]. According to Rebecca Sugar, they seem to be extremely important for Homeworld.
** Topazes are elite guards and soldiers that seem to act as Secret Service to the Diamonds on Homeworld, taking orders and missions only from their Diamond directly. On missions, they generally act as [[TheBrute brute muscle.]]
** Nephrites serve as pilots and explorers.
** Zircons are lawyers.

** Peridots are [[TheEngineer engineers and technicians]]. They seem to be considered similarly unimportant, as Peridot was called "a lowly Peridot" by Yellow Diamond and finds the idea of having her own Pearl laughably absurd.

Despite being tasked with taking specific humans alive for a Zoo, she considers them interchangeable and expendable enough to fudge her goal when it conveniences her. Peridot and ''Jasper'' didn't act this bad.

** Pebbles are so different than previously established Gems, both in terms of physiology (entirely made of stone instead of HardLight from a gemstone HeartDrive) and creation (spontaneously made by the Diamonds, like Steven and Rose's plant creatures, no Injectors or Kindergarten involved), it's hard to say if they even are "Gems". It's Off Colors, a group of fugitive Gems, later shown confirm this is indeed the case, so is being born with a defect. Naturally, Rose Quartz was able to use this as a fantastic recruiting tool, as she herself believed the exact opposite and encouraged her Crystal Gems to find their own identity and desires. [[{{Irony}} Counterintuitively]], most of her subordinates only followed her because she was decidedly not kidding.a very charismatic [[TheLeader leader]], and others only wanted to bite back at [[TheEmpire the Gempire]], regardless of her actual philosophies; early on in the show, it seems that the remainder of the Crystal Gems only stayed around to protect Earth (and Steven, by extension) because that's what Rose would have wanted them to do.

* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: In general, Gems made to serve Yellow Diamond (Peridot, Jasper, Yellow Pearl) are tomboyish to some degree; they're [[{{Jerkass}} arrogant, rude]], assertive, [[LargeHam hammy]] and wear form-fitting suits. Peridot is also a technician/engineer and Jasper is a soldier, jobs that would be considered traditionally male. In contrast, Gems made to serve Blue Diamond (Sapphire, Lapis Lazuli, Blue Pearl) are conventionally feminine, composed, soft-spoken, have a habit of clasping their hands and wear flowing dresses or skirts.

* EntertaininglyWrong: A pivotal moment in the show's backstory is the shattering of Pink Diamond by Rose Quartz. In [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E2TheTrial "The Trial"]], Steven, who possesses Rose's Gem, is put on trial by Blue and Yellow Diamond, who want to see "Rose Quartz" answer for her crimes. During the trial, Defense Zircon realizes that the known details about the crime don't add up. For starters, how did Rose, by then a known war criminal, get anywhere ''near'' Pink Diamond in the first place? Defense Zircon concludes that Pink was lured from safety by someone she knew and trusted, and the only ones she knew, trusted, and could have shattered her were the other Diamonds. [[Recap/StevenUniverseS5E18ASinglePaleRose "A Single Pale Rose"]] reveals that Blue Zircon was very close, but would never have considered the truth: The one responsible for Pink Diamond's shattering [[spoiler:was Pink Diamond herself. Yellow Diamond is so upset by the accusation that she poofs the Zircon. Possibly subverted in that Blue Diamond clearly wanted to know more about how Pink died (thus getting what she wanted) and was upset with Yellow's actions, which may save Zircon from a shattering.
