to:

The number two seeded high school basketball team of Kanagawa prefecture.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Shoyo only relied on the height of its players which made them a monster of defense but not good on offense. It was only when Fujima joined did the team finally become more flexible.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Shohoku vs Shoyo revolved around the idea that Shoyo was the favor to go to the regional finals. Shohoku's own school paper even used SHOYO DEFEATED as it's headline instead of something like SHOHOKU WINS.

Kick The Dog is when a villain goes out of their way to hurt someone/something just because they can. Not because it serves them. Also, Berserk Button has to have a minor reason behind it, while disrespecting a person one admire(s) is an understandable reason to get upset.

** Completely ''[[BerserkButton snaps]]'' when [[KickTheDog Ayako is hit by one of Mitsui's gang members]], kicking the culprit in the head and then beating him up ''savagely'' while yelling at him to not ever raise his hand against a woman.

* CassandraTruth: He has an argument with his mother when he tells her that he will study at Akagi's house to study for a remedial exam so that he can keep playing basketball. His mother doesn't believe him, leaving to an argument. Lampshaded by Sakuragi, who points out that his mother wouldn't trust him because Mitsui used to be a delinquent for two years.
* CurbStompBattle: His fights with Ryota, Sakuragi, Rukawa, and Yohei end with Mitsui [[OneHitKill getting knocked down in one blow]] or [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown getting a beating]] since his opponents are better fighters than him.

* HeroWorshipper: He deeply respect Anzai because he was the one who gave Mitsui words of encouragement in his last middle school match, which allowed Mitsui to win the match. Part of the reason he wanted to take Shohoku to the Nationals was to pay him back. Even after becoming a delinquent, Anzai's mere presence resulted in Mitsui pulling a HeelFaceTurn that caused him to return to basketball.

* MyGreatestFailure: He considers his two years as a delinquent to be his greatest regret as he wasted two years that he could have spent playing basketball, resulting in him growing weaker by the time that he makes his return.

* RedRightHand: During his FaceHeelTurn stint, he loses his two front teeth courtesy of Ryota.

to:

* PaperTiger: Despite being the leader of a delinquent group, Mitsui is not as strong of a fighter as he thinks he is. He lost a fight with Miyagi a year before the series that resulted in him being hospitalized. Both Rukawa and Sakuragi knock him down with one blow each at the beginning of the school brawl. And Yohei gives him a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown throughout their fight. He only lands blows on the group because they let him hit them rather than because he was at their level.
* RedRightHand: During his FaceHeelTurn stint, he loses his two front teeth courtesy of Ryota. He lost a third one from his lower teeth when Ryota accidentally elbows him in the face during a fight with Sakuragi.

* ToothyIssue: Has missing incisors that Ryota knocked out of his face while still a delinquent. By the time he joins the team, he's already replaced them (most probably with bridges).

* FriendlyRivalry: With Akagi. Uozumi verbally encourages Akagi when he sees the latter being pressured by Maki during the Shohoku-Kainan match. Also, after Ryonan's last game against Shohoku, which results in Shohoku qualifying for the Nationals and Ryonan being eliminated, both Uozumi and Akagi hug each other while crying out ManlyTears, as it's their last match against each other (with Uozumi retiring from basketball because it's his last year as a high schooler and Akagi following suit not too long afterwards).

Jerkass isn't to be listed when it’s sub-tropes are like Jerk With A Heart Of Gold.

* JerkAss: Being aloof and having no social skills, Rukawa comes off as rude and/or insensitive to others, specially girls like Haruko (which is part of why Sakuragi hates him initially). The only things he seems to be good at are fighting and playing basketball, and in the latter, he tends to be selfish and a show off. Unlike Sakuragi, who is already a JerkWithAHeartOfGold at the beginning of the story, Rukawa starts as a full Jerkass who slowly evolves into the latter trope as the story progresses and he bonds with his teammates.

[[spoiler:Rukawa passes by to greet Sakuragi, showing him his jersey of Japan's national team, for which Rukawa was chosen to be a member. * LightningBruiser: Physically strong, fast and skilled enough to be the best player in the district. During the match with Shohoku, Maki easily outruns Sakuragi (who is possibly the second fastest player in Shohoku, after Myagi and alongside Rukawa, though in terms of strength they seem almost even and Sakuragi still has unmatched leaping ability). It's noted that he has the power, speed and skill to play virtually any position. Combined with the GeniusBruiser entry above, it goes hand in hand with his being TheAce.
