* HeroesWantRedheads: Largely averted; she's one of the few adults in the series with no confirmed {{love interest}}. However, when Michel's friends from the University of Orlais are invited to visit, he acknowledges that "Fairbanks would be here tomorrow" if he thought Leliana would give him the time of day.

** SecretSecretKeeper: Sometimes the thing she knows about other characters are things they don't ''realize'' she knows. For instance, it's implied in the first story that [[spoiler:she knows the real reason for Hawke's sabbatical and how that reason is affecting Varric]], something Varric himself doesn't realize.

** CastingGag: Nessa sings a few songs from ''WesternAnimation/{{Moana}}''.

* MeaningfulName: Varric nicknames Jim "Bishop", after the chess piece, but it has a double meaning that falls into Fridge territory. Jim, as noted above, is asexual, and chooses to be celibate... much like a priest.

* WhatDoesSheSeeInHim?: According to Varric, Bethany's greatest flaw is her questionable taste in men.

* TranquilFury: His reaction to [[spoiler:Evvy being kidnapped]] in the first game amounts to this. He's not nearly as outspoken about his feelings on the subject as Cullen or Dorian, but it's clear that he is absolutely ''furious''.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: And it's mentioned repeatedly.

* TheChick: She fills a few aspects of the trope, being a sweet character who is able to see the good in other people.

* NamesTheSame: His backstory includes two people named Rhys and Evangeline, as in the novel ''Literature/{{Asunder}}'', though of course their involvement in his life is changed to reflect the setting. This has only been mentioned once in the series thus far, when he explains that he immediately trusted his mother when they met because her name was also Evangeline, but [=AuroraBorealia=] has actually written his history to flesh out the details.

* [[BigBrotherWorship Big Sister Worship]]: As different as they are in many ways, Bethany idolizes Marian and they are very close.

* IllGirl: This is [[spoiler:the secret real reason for Hawke's sabbatical]] in the first story, because [[spoiler:her condition is so rare and dangerous that she's basically SecretlyDying for a long time. She improves dramatically, and is able to lead a mostly normal life, but she'll never be completely well]].

* [[IllGirl Ill Boy]]: He has an undefined chronic condition (a nod to his illness in the game). It doesn't seem to affect him too heavily, but is the reason for his very minor role.

In ''I Must Be Going,'' Varric casts her in the Miracle Max role because he reasons that if he were ever going to ask anyone to perform a literal miracle, it would be Leliana.
