* AffectionateNickname: In Japanese, he refers to his Pokémon as his "cool buds" (and yes, that's in [[GratuitousEnglish English]]).

* RuleOfSymbolism: A big part of Harley's characterization is his massive and unreasonable grudge against May. Fittingly enough, he has a Banette, which is said in the Pokédex to have been born from a grudge.

Added DiffLines:

* HasAType: Harley seems to prefer Pokémon that have a menacing look, such as Cacturne, Banette and Ariados. Even his Wigglytuff, which most people would consider cute, has a purple glare across its face.

* LoopholeAbuse: When competing against Jessie in the Saffron City Contest, she chooses to use Wobbuffet, which Harley's Ariados cannot attack directly because it will just reflect said attack with Counter or Mirror Coat. So, instead, Harley has Ariados use String Shot to tie up Wobbuffet and jerk it around like a puppet on strings before throwing it across the arena and knocking it out.

* EvilCounterpart: In hindsight, he could be considered one for Nando from the ''Diamond & Pearl'' anime. Both are male Contest rivals with effeminate mannerisms and green color schemes, but Harley is loud, flamboyant, LaughablyEvil, and cruel to people he dislikes, while Nando is quiet, composed, polite, and kind-hearted. Perhaps it's [[CastingGag not a coincidence]] that Harley's second English voice actor was chosen to voice Nando as well.

Bokukko is now def-only. Don't reference other examples on a page.

* {{Bokukko}}: Inverted. In Japanese, he refers to himself using ''atashi,'' the feminine form of ''I,'' as opposed to using the masculine forms ''boku'' or ''ore,'' or even the gender-neutral ''watashi.''

Understandable is a better word here.

* {{Hypocrite}}: Max has a tendency to criticize May and Ash for their flaws as a coordinator & a trainer respectively, but when it was time for Max to battle one time, he knew almost nothing about battling. This may be justified, since he is too young to be a trainer, after all.
