The son of a contractor named William West. After his father died (his mother was already dead), he was taken in by the House of Fianna, an orphanage run by the Nightray family. He was in complete denial over his father's death until Oz forced him to face reality, although this could have to do with the effect Humpty Dumpty had on him rather than just denial.

*** To be clear, at the end of the story Dahlia tries to sacrifice Gilbert to a god her cult worships, and Gilbert points his gun at her, thinking bemusedly that he isn't at all upset by this outcome, implying he really didn't care as much about Dahlia like the ShipTease implied. (This even makes it seem like the ShipTease was only there for the extreme ShipSinking that was to come.) Gilbert concludes with a calm "Sorry, but [[SingleTargetSexuality my flesh and blood belongs to Oz.]]" This is pretty much the end of the Gilbert/Dahlia ShipTease/the climax of the Gilbert/Dahlia ShipSinking, but there's [[UpToEleven even more ShipSinking right afterwards,]] when Gilbert talks to Oz and definitively says he [[TransparentCloset wants to spend the rest of his life with him.]]

* ShipTease: Between her and Gilbert, although due to the extremely obvious context of why this would be and the eventual fate of their relationship, this trope may not be considered applicable by some.
** For more details: despite the fact that this was not part of her plan, Dahlia developed a genuine fondness for Gilbert, and Gilbert himself felt the same way towards her. It's never explicitly stated the liking they had taken to one another was romantic, especially since they were meeting each other for entirely not-romantic reasons, but it's portrayed in a way so that it appears it's attempting to build ShipTease. Seemingly deliberately, it's made very clear [[AmbiguouslyGay Gilbert has never showed this much concern for a woman before,]] and it's almost implied that he intends to marry her. Multiple fans speculated while reading this particular Caucus Race story that Dahlia was only created to confirm Gilbert's [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday questionable heterosexuality]]...until the end of the story.

The thirtieth woman to make it past the high social barrier of the Nightrays in order for a possibility to marry Gilbert. She turned out to be a cultist and only went out with Gilbert to try and use him as a live sacrifice, but unfortunately for her, she actually grew fond of him. Regardless, their relationship didn't end well.

A woman from the Garland Family. The Garlands were not very well known in the world of the nobles, but were still highly established. She was the thirtieth young woman to petition for a proposal for Gilbert after he'd become a Nightray. Bernard Nightray approved of Dahlia and Gilbert's courtship after looking into Dahlia's background to determine if pairing the two families would be within the Nightrays' best interest.
* BlackWidow: Her code name. Subverted that she is actually a timid girl with no interest in killing men.
