[[folder: MOTHER]]
[[WMG: Ninten]]
A twelve-year-old American boy, who lives with his parents and twin younger sisters outside the town of Podunk ([[StealthPun Mother's]] Day). He sets out to find the Eight Melodies and possibly uncover secrets about his mysterious great-grandparents. Not much information is given about his personality, but he seems to be a kind, brave kid, if with a bit of a temper. He loves prime ribs, penguins, and baseball, and occasionally suffers from asthma.

* TheAllAmericanBoy: He's a bat-wielding {{Everyman}} boy from a small American town.
* BadassAdorable
* BatterUp: Uses baseball bats as weapons.
* BerserkButton: Lying about his mother calling him is not a smart move, hippies.
* CombatMedic: He has a powerful physical attack, the strongest of all permanent members, but all of his PSI is assist and healing. He doesn't even get a SignatureMove like Ness's PSI Rockin or Lucas's PK Love.
* FountainOfExpies: His appearance (especially his trademark striped shirt) set the standard for ''MOTHER'' series protagonists.
** Ness is the most obvious example, as he is almost an exact copy of him. As Ness is more well-known, this sometimes leads to confusion, as they share the same outfit. Fans often draw Ninten wearing a red neckerchief and with a slightly different shirt stripe pattern to differentiate them, based on a live-action Japanese commercial for ''MOTHER''.
* TheHero
* HeroicMime: [[spoiler:Until the ending, at least in the English prototype]].
* JackOfAllStats
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: The novelization written by Saori Kumi portrays him as this.
* MagicKnight: Has healing and shield PSI, with strong attack and good defense.
* NiceHat: The baseball cap that he convinced his dad to buy for him.
* OfficialCouple: Ninten X Ana is the only true relationship between the playable characters in the series.
* PsychicPowers
* SupportPartyMember: Has only support/healing PSI, but is capable of powerful normal attacks.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Prime ribs.
* WhiteMage: Only has support PSI.

[[WMG: Loid]]
The eleven-year-old boy genius from Merrysville (Thanksgiving). Loid is brilliant, but is often bullied by his classmates for being a nerd and a weakling. He developed a tendency to hide in trash cans to avoid confrontation. Despite this, he has a great deal of determination, even when it comes to the dreaded gym class. Bullying has left him very shy and cowardly when he joins Ninten, but over time he becomes stronger and more confident in himself. He likes rockets, science, computers, and ''{{Superman}}''.
----
* BadassAdorable
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler: He saves Ninten, Ana, and Teddy from being slaughtered by the [[HopelessBossFight R7038]], but he is too late to save the critically-wounded Teddy. He still manages to destroy the R7038, however]].
* ButtMonkey: He gets bullied a lot at school, and everyone calls him a weakling.
* GadgeteerGenius
* HeroicAlbino
* ItemCaddy
* LovableCoward: Ninten meets Loid hiding from bullies in a garbage can. He later gets over his cowardice through CharacterDevelopment.
* MeaningfulName: Loid's name comes from his Japanese name, "Roido," coming from the word "roidomegane", meaning "round glasses with thick plastic rims".
* NerdGlasses
* TheSmartGuy
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: ''[[VideoGame/{{Mother1}} Earthbound Zero]]'' translates his name as "Loid," but his sticker in [[SuperSmashBros Super Smash Bros. Brawl]] calls him "Lloyd."
* WhiteHairedPrettyBoy: Or at least the white-haired part, anyway.
* YouthfulFreckles: Look at his clay model, he has them.

[[WMG: Ana]]
The only permanent female member of the group, Ana is a twelve-year-old from Snowman. A sweet, but timid girl, Ana has never ventured out of Snowman alone. She is described as kind at heart, with a great sense of direction. Before the start of the adventure, Ana was unable to sleep due to odd dreams, and sets out with Ninten in hopes of finding her abducted mother. She is deeply religious (one of her favorite possessions being a Bible), is a skilled piano player, and also collects stamps and envelopes.
----
* BadassAdorable: This adorable little girl in pink and pigtails has some powerful PSI.
* TheChick
* FriendToAllLivingThings: A lover of all animals, she once released all the frogs set to be dissected at her school with her ''mind''.
* GirlishPigtails: Only with her [[NiceHat hat]] off. When it's on, she has a single ponytail.
* LadyOfBlackMagic
* MissingMom: One of the big reasons she offers to join [[TheHero Ninten]] is to find her mother.
* NiceHat
* PsychicPowers
* SquishyWizard: [[GlassCannon Boy, is she ever]].
* WhiteMagicianGirl: Has the personality of one, but is actually a RedMage.

[[WMG: Teddy]]
Unlike the other members of the party, Teddy is not a kid; rather, he is a young man in his late teens to twenties. Leader of the B.B. (Black Blood Gang), he is the kingpin of the town of Ellay (Valentine) until some kids came in and started messing with his crew. [[DefeatMeansFriendship After he is beaten by Ninten, he joins the party as to avenge the death of his parents.]] He likes smoking, fighting, and rock and roll.
----
* TheAlcoholic: The [[AllThereInTheManual MOTHER Encyclopedia]] implies that Teddy is this.
* TheBigGuy
* CoolShades / TriangleShades: He was doing [[TengenToppaGurrenLagann Kamina's shades]] over a decade before Kamina ([[Anime/{{Pokemon}} or Squirtle]]).
* DefeatMeansFriendship
* [[{{Delinquents}} Delinquent]]
** [[GreaserDelinquents Greaser Delinquent]]
* [[spoiler: GuestStarPartyMember]]
* [[spoiler: KilledOffForReal: Only in the original Japanese version. In the translated prototype and the ''MOTHER 1 + 2'' GBA port, he is shown recovering in a hospital.]]
* LightningBruiser
* SmokingIsCool: It is said that Teddy smokes [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar "Horse Shit" brand cigarettes]] in the [[AllThereInTheManual MOTHER Encyclopedia]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid: A NPC will tell you that, before his parents' deaths, he was a very nice boy.
* YouKilledMyFather: His parents were supposedly killed by wild animals, and he joined Ninten in order to avenge them. [[spoiler: The MOTHER Encyclopedia says that it was actually a car accident, but he refused to pay attention to this finding.]]

[[WMG: Pippi]]
A pigtailed young girl whom Ninten must save from zombies.
----
* CuteBruiser: You wouldn't expect her to have ''the exact same stat growths as Teddy''.
** If you realize she's Literature/PippiLongstocking, then yes, yes you would.
* GirlishPigtails
* GuestStarPartyMember
** CrutchCharacter: Though she does turn an unintended encounter group location into a PeninsulaOfPowerLeveling.
* LawyerFriendlyCameo: Of Literature/PippiLongstocking.
* LightningBruiser

[[WMG: Queen Mary]]
The ethereal, beautiful queen of the mysterious land of Magicant. She has fallen gravely ill, and the only thing that will restore her to her former self are the Eight Melodies. [[spoiler:She is Ninten's great-grandmother, and was the deeply-beloved foster mother of Giygas.]]
----
* HairOfGold
* TheHighQueen
* [[spoiler: LukeIAmYourFather]]: [[spoiler:She is Ninten's great-grandmother, who disappeared a long time ago and has been trapped in her own mental world ever since.]]
* PrincessesPreferPink: Or queens, anyway.

[[WMG: [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Giegue/Gyiyg/Giygas]]]]
The grim leader of the invading alien forces. [[spoiler:He leads the invasion to take revenge for the human theft of his race's PSI technology, but his resolve crumbles when confronted with the memory of his beloved foster mother, and swears to come back to finish the job later.]]
----
* AntiVillain: If you pay attention to his backstory and see what happens to him in the second game, he arguably can be interpreted as eventually becoming one of these.
* BigBad
* {{Expy}}: Mewtwo of ''{{Pokemon}}'' was based on his design, and depending on the ''Pokémon'' canon in question other similarities crop up.
* GalacticConqueror
* HumansAreUgly
* LoveMakesYouEvil
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Depending on the translation, his name came up as: Giegue in the original VideoGame/Mother1 prototype, Gyiyg in [[EarthBound Mother 2]] and in EarthBound as [[MyNaymeIs Giygas]].
* StartOfDarkness: His role here lay the foundation for what he became in ''EarthBound''.
* [[TalkingTheMonsterToDeath Singing the Alien to Death]]
* TragicMonster: Especially once you learn what happens to him later...
* WeCanRuleTogether: Though not exactly, but he's willing to spare Ninten due to being indebted to his great-grandparents.
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: Even before his trope-naming sequel appearance, the form of Giegue's attack happened to be inexplicable.

[[WMG: Ness]]
[[quoteright:131:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/131px-Claynes_1700.png]]
[[caption-width-right:131: Don't get homesick!]]

A perfectly average boy living in Onett, Eagleland. Sets out to find the eight "My Sanctuary" locations and to locate the other three heroes. Little is said about his personality in-game, but his appearances in SuperSmashBros describe him as being courageous and good-natured.

--> Voiced by MakikoOhmoto in ''SuperSmashBros''
----
* AdrenalineMakeover: [[InformedAttribute Supposedly]] loses weight over the course of his adventure, as some characters point out in the ending.
* TheAllAmericanBoy
* BadassAdorable: The little guy has ''very'' high offense stats.
* BarrierWarrior: Complementing his CombatMedic role.
* BatterUp: Uses a baseball bat as his main melee weapon.
* CombatMedic: Has the best healing PSI, as well as the highest attack and defense by far.
* {{Expy}}: Of Ninten.
* TheHero
* HeroicMime: [[spoiler: You do get a chance to hear his thoughts late in the game, though.]]
** Lampshaded by a couple [=NPCs=], one of which being Franky.
* IMissMom: He can get ''homesickness'' as a status effect. It's remedied by calling home, of course. [[SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments D'aww!]]
* KidHero
* LightEmUp: PSI Flash, which creates a bright flash of light that may OneHitKO enemies.
* MagicKnight: He's the party's [[StoneWall tank]], physical powerhouse, and medic. [[spoiler:This is even without the Magicant boosts, which tone down [[MightyGlacier his speed weakness]].]]
* MightyGlacier: Has extremely high offense and hit points, but is the slowest party member by far. [[spoiler:Once he overcomes the evil in his heart and gains the power of the Sanctuaries, his HP and PP increase to truly ludicrous levels and his speed improves; though he is still somewhat slow.]]
** GlacierWaif: Sure doesn't look it though.
* NeverTheSelvesShallMeet: Ness and Baby Ness accidentally catch sight of each other from across time. This causes Ness to be catapulted into his own subconsciousness, aka {{Magicant}}.
* NiceGuy: One of few traits known from Ness's personality.
--> ''"Even if he had telepathic powers, I don't think he'd use them to mess with you like that. I hear he's a good kid."'', from [[Franchise/MetalGear Solid Snake]]'s Codec call on him.
* NiceHat: That lovely baseball cap.
** Heck, [[spoiler: it's the one sole piece of clothing he keeps on in the Japanese version of Magicant where he's running around nude. He must really be attached to it a lot if it's the one thing he didn't lose and kept on even at that point of the game after losing the rest of his articles of clothing]].
* OfficialCouple: With Paula.
* [[spoiler:OutOfClothesExperience]]: [[spoiler:In the Japanese version, Ness is naked in {{Magicant}}, complete with BarbieDollAnatomy. (Remember that, in Japan, nudity is used as a symbol of purity.) This was changed in the US version, where he's in the pajamas he was wearing at the start of the game.]]
* PsychicPowers
* PureEnergy: This is what PSI Rockin' is.
** {{Kiai}}: In Japan it was called ''PK {{Kiai}}.''
* SignatureMove: PSI Rockin.
* TheChosenOne: ''Ness, it is my opinion you are that boy. This I believe...''
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler: After defeating the darkness in his heart in Magicant, gaining several levels and strong boosts to his statistics.]]
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Steak, or whatever you [[HelloInsertNameHere put as the favorite food]] at the start of the game.
* WhiteMage: Not counting his SignatureMove, PSI Rockin, his PSI Powers are mostly support.

[[WMG: Paula Polestar]]
[[quoteright:115:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/115px-Paula_Polestar_Clay_6426.png]]
[[caption-width-right:115: ''I'm calling out to you who I've never met...'']]

A young girl who lives in Twoson and who possesses powerful psychic abilities. Ness must come to her rescue after she is kidnapped by the Happy Happyist cult.
----
* AlliterativeName: Not official (the guide says that her last name is 'Jones') but most people think her last name is Polestar, the name of the preschool she and her parents work at.
* BadassAdorable: Cute little girl dressed all in pink. Can set you on fire with her mind.
* BlackMage: She's the primary offensive magic user, later sharing this spot with Poo.
* ChekhovsSkill: Her unique ability, 'Pray', is generally useless in battle, as its effects are completely random -- a full-party heal is nice, but do you really want to risk reviving all your defeated enemies or having everyone start feeling strange? [[spoiler: You use it to call out to the whole world for help in the final battle against Giygas.]]
* TheChick
* DistressedDamsel: [[spoiler:Happens '''three times'''. Getting her back the third time is one of the hardest parts of the game; you will not take her for granted afterward.]]
* EveryGirlIsCuterWithHairDecs: Wears a large red ribbon in her hair, and has access to unique ribbon accessories.
* {{Expy}}: Of Ana.
* FireIceLightning: She's got all three as her offensive PSI.
* FragileSpeedster: She has the highest speed of the four heroes, and is about as durable as a wet piece of tissue paper.
* FryingPanOfDoom: Uses a frying pan as her main weapon.
* HairDecorations: Has a large red ribbon in her hair, and has ribbons as most of her 'other' equipment.
* HairOfGold
* GlassCannon
* TheLancer
* LadyOfBlackMagic
* OfficialCouple: With Ness. [[{{Squee}} D'aww]].
* PinkMeansFeminine
* PsychicPowers
* SquishyWizard: Easily two-shotted due to her low level at first, and then two-shotted at later levels due to her mediocre defense and terrible HP growths. She has around 250HP at [=LV60=]-[=LV70=], and that's if the game was generous with RNG and if you're not (ab)using the {{game break|er}}ing rock candy + sugar packet trick. The other party members' HP will be double (or triple in [[MightyGlacier Ness]]' case) that. She has the best offensive spells (and a couple good defensive spells too), and is fast enough to get them off before her foes can act, but she'll always trail behind the other party members in terms of HP and defense.
* WhiteMagicianGirl: Subverted: has the personality of one, but almost all of her PSI are destructive in nature. [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation Make of]] [[CuteAndPsycho this what]] [[MamaBear you will]].

[[WMG: Jeff Andonuts]]
[[quoteright:115:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/115px-Jeff_Andonuts_Clay_9631.png]]
[[caption-width-right:115: ''Uh, those glasses look good on you.'']]

A child prodigy attending a boarding school in Winters. Comes to Ness and Paula's rescue after they are captured by zombies, after receiving a telekinetic message from Paula.
----
* {{Badass|Adorable}} {{Adorkable}}
* BadassBookworm
* BadassNormal: Is the only character in the main party with no psychic powers, but has a variety of self-made weapons and is frequently the team's pilot.
* {{BFG}}: His bazookas are just as destructive as you would imagine.
* BigDamnHeroes: His solo journey from Winters to Eagleland to [[DynamicEntry bust Ness and Paula out of prison]].
* BoardingSchool: Attends one in Winters.
* BowtiesAreCool
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Has a body count of two Sky Runners, both of which crashed under his piloting. (Though he can ''usually'' repair them.) The submarine somehow remained unscathed.
* EnemyScan: Can use his unique ability, Spy, to display an enemy's stats and status ailment weaknesses. And to [[VideoGameStealing steal any items they might have on them.]]
* {{Expy}}: Of Loid.
* GadgeteerGenius: Jeff lacks the psychic powers of his friends, but he can take things you'd find in most typical junkyards, such as broken harmonicas, irons, pipes, and antennas, and somehow retrofit them into highly advanced laser guns, psychic shield destroyers, and slime blasters.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: His self-introduction to Ness and Paula.
* ItemCaddy
* MacrossMissileMassacre: The only character who can use the massively damaging bottle rocket items.
* MadScientist: Not quite as bad as [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} his father]] yet, but gets up to some impressive scientific feats for his young age.
* [[MadScientistsBeautifulDaughter Mad Scientist's Cute Son]]
* MrFixit: Can turn broken junk you find lying around into laser guns, psychic field neutralizers, bazookas...
* {{Muggle}}: Like Loid, he can't use PSI.
* NerdGlasses: Self-described as "really nearsighted", he's probably BlindWithoutEm.
* ParentalAbandonment: Grew up in an exclusive boys' boarding school and hasn't seen his father in ten years.
** His father's response on seeing him? "Let's do this again in another 10 years."
* RayGun: Uses [[GadgeteerGenius homemade]] laser guns as his weapons.
* SchoolUniformsAreTheNewBlack
* ScienceHero
* TheShortGuyWithGlasses
* TheSleepless / PlotPoweredStamina: When staying at inns, he'll stay up all night fixing that broken junk you've accumulated, and his battle prowess doesn't suffer a bit for it.
* TheSmartGuy: A scientific prodigy and son of the famous Dr. Andonuts, he boasts the highest IQ and IQ growths in the game.
* TheTeamNormal
* TeenGenius
* ToyShip: With [[HoYay Tony]]. [[invoked]]
* WellDoneSonGuy: Averted. He isn't hung up on this, but later on, his own father, despite being a flightly CloudCuckooLander, [[HeartwarmingMoments tells his son he is indeed proud of him.]]
* YouthfulFreckles

[[WMG: Poo]]
[[quoteright:115:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/115px-Poo_Clay_532.png]]
[[caption-width-right:115: ''I am the one who will fight beside you.'']]

The prince of Dalaam who comes to Ness's aid to fulfill a prophecy dictated by his mentor. He arrives after Ness and company accidentally trip out on some [[GRatedDrug Magic Cake]].
----
* BadassAdorable
* BareFistedMonk: At least if you don't pick up the [[RandomlyDrops notoriously rare]] Sword of Kings. Even then, the command isn't changed to slash. Either he equips it because he becomes stronger just having it, or only uses the hilt. (Or the "Sword" part was [[LampshadedDoubleEntendre symbolic]].)
* BarrierWarrior: He's actually superior at shielding than Ness is, since only he can learn the sigma and omega levels of Shield, which cover the entire party, while Ness can only cover one at a time.
* BaldOfAwesome
* BattleButler: Swears to serve Ness upon meeting him.
* BigDamnHeroes: He swoops in (literally) and deals the finishing blow to Master Belch.
* TheBigGuy
* CantCatchUp: He joins at an extremely low level for the point of the game you're at, and has trouble catching up.
* ChickMagnet: Very popular with the ladies of Dalaam.
* ColonyDrop: '''PK STARSTORRRM!!!'''
* DynamicEntry: Seems fond of this -- he drops out of the sky in his first appearance to Ness and company, and it is also a big part of his BigDamnHeroes moment against Master Belch.
* HeroesPreferSwords: The Sword of Kings, one of those infamous rare item drops.
* InformedAttractiveness: When playing as him, you get a lot of attention from the ladies in Dalaam.
* JackOfAllStats: He can use [[TheRedMage both healing and offensive PSI]], and has decent overall stats as well.
* LookWhatICanDoNow: PK Starstorm Alpha.
* MegaManning: Has the unique ability to transform himself into certain enemies during battle.
* MindScrew: So, was Ness controlling him, just watching/having a premonition, or happily tripping out while Poo set out for unrelated reasons?
* PickyEater: Dislikes (or just isn't used to) most Western foods, and gets minimal HP restoration from eating them.
* PsychicPowers
* TheRedMage: Has access to a variety of both healing and offensive PSI, unlike specialists Ness and Paula.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething
* SpoonyBard: Oh, boy...his PP is low, but he can restore it by drinking cheap bottles of water. He isn't used to Western food and gains minimal HP restoration from it. He can only use certain pieces of equipment, and any others will lower his stats -- he has exactly ONE weapon, and it's an [[RandomlyDrops incredibly rare]] drop from an enemy in a one-time-only area. It's also extremely difficult for him to [[CantCatchUp catch up level-wise]] because he requires the ''most'' EXP for each individual level up.
* ToyShip: With... [[KidAnova all the ladies of Dalaam]], [[ChickMagnet really]]. [[invoked]]
* TrainingFromHell: His Mu training, at the end of which he [[spoiler: is ritually, symbolically killed by the spirits of his ancestors]].
* UnfortunateName: It isn't as unfortunate in Japan, as his name is read as "Puu" there. It's intended to be Asian-sounding, but the North American release Romanized it differently... and unfortunately. Prerelease images indicate it was almost Romanized as "Pu"; you have to wonder whether the change had anything to do with [[ToiletHumor the game's unfortunate advertising campaign]].
* WarriorPrince

[[WMG: King]]
[[quoteright:141:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/King_Clay_5447.png]]
[[caption-width-right:141: ''Awoooof! (I'm outta here!)'']]

Ness's lovely little pet dog. He's a GuestStarPartyMember early on in the game, and does substantial damage. He chickens out and runs away when Buzz Buzz appears, because the party limit is four.

BUT! It was meant to be five! That's right, King was meant to be a permanent party member. This model ''does'' however return in [[VideoGame/{{Mother 3}} Boney]].

* ArbitraryHeadcountLimit: If he'd been permanent, he would've extended it to 5.
* BigFriendlyDog: In the novel adaption he is stated to be an English Sheep Dog.
* DemotedToExtra
* HeroesLoveDogs
* TheLancer: Until he leaves the party.
* LovableCoward
--> King: I'm not going out again. I don't care if everyone thinks I'm a stubborn mutt.
* {{Muggle}}
* OldDog: King is even older than Ness.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen: It's given away by an unused climbing sprite.

[[WMG: [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Porky/Pokey]] Minch]]
[[quoteright:132:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Pokey_Minch_Clay_4697.png]]
[[caption-width-right:132: ''Come and get me, loser!'']]

Ness's next-door neighbor. A selfish, spoiled brat who loves to cause trouble and [[spoiler:is Giygas's [[TheDragon right-hand man]], pulling strings behind the scenes.]]
----
* AbusiveParents: In the Japanese version of ''Mother 2'', Pokey glumly says that if his parents find out he and Picky were out late, he gets spanked 100 times; this had to be changed because of Nintendo's rules of content. Thus, in the American version of EarthBound, he gets no dessert for the rest of the decade.
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: [[spoiler:Turns sickly blue as a side-effect of abusing time travel]].
* [[spoiler: BigBadFriend]]: Or at least ''he'' thought of Ness as a friend.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's pretty much a joke in the first half of the game. [[spoiler:The final act sees him acting as emissary to a cosmic destroyer, and he's elevated to virtual godhood in ''Mother 3'']].
* BlindingBangs
* BlondGuysAreEvil
* ColorMotif: As a "consultant" to Fourside's corrupt Mayor, Porky dons a [[BadassInANiceSuit snazzy striped suit]]. It's red and black -- [[spoiler:just like Giygas]].
* DirtyCoward: Makes it very clear that, now that he has powerful new friends, he's [[JustYouAndMeAndMyGUARDS far too good for the likes of you]]. When you inevitably prevail, he begs for forgiveness just long enough to make a getaway.
* TheDragAlong: "[[TheChosenOne Three boys]], he said? ...Uhhh...I'm not one of those three, am I?...'Cause... I'm not into this kind of thing at all..."
* [[spoiler:DragonInChief]]: In ''EarthBound'', as by the time you fight them, [[spoiler:Giygas is barely sentient]] and clearly incapable of acting of his own accord. This could make Porky [[spoiler:TheDragon, part a BigBadDuumvirate, or the outright BigBad]]; it's very open to interpretation, like most things in ''MOTHER''.
** In the original Japanese, Pokey tellingly drops the [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics "-sama" honorific]] from [[spoiler:Giygas]]'s name. Similarly, in the English translation, he drops the title of "Master" from his name. Pokey no longer considers [[spoiler:Giygas]] his boss or his better, but as something more of an [[RightHandAttackDog attack dog]].
* DumbIsGood: As he becomes [[spoiler:more and more evil]], his speech is more erudite, as well.
* EnfanteTerrible
* [[spoiler:EvilCounterpart]]: To Ness.
* FatBastard: UpToEleven, to the point where [=NPCs=] ''always'' refer to him as a "pig-looking kid". [[MeaningfulName Consider his name, for one]].
* FreudianExcuse: His parents are pretty loathsome. Either one would sell out humanity for a nickel, so it's no surprise that Porky is so susceptible.
* [[spoiler:FromNobodyToNightmare]]
* {{Gonk}}
* GreenEyedMonster: Pokey's projection in Magicant claims to be envious of Ness. A lot of his later behavior is geared toward belittling or dominating our hero. ("So ''now'' which one of us do you think is the cool guy?!" he asks before vanishing at the very end).
* HypocriticalHumor: Even as he pesters the cops at the meteor crash site, he tells Ness to buzz off and stop "rubber-necking".
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: According to WordOfGod. Porky's manifestation in Magicant is quite friendly and wishes to mend fences with Ness.
* {{Jerkass}}: [[SerialEscalation Taken to ever-increasing levels. Just when you think he can't possibly get any worse, he somehow finds a way to top himself. Again. And again. And again.]]
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:Giygas' reign of terror is over]]; Porky's has only just begun.
* [[spoiler:LaughingMad]]: During the [[spoiler:final boss battle]], even though he admits [[spoiler:Giygas]] terrifies him as much as Ness.
* TheLoad: Although he's only with you at the very beginning of the game, all he does is alternately whine, [[AintTooProudToBeg beg for mercy]], [[SecurityCling hide behind Ness]], [[PlayingPossum play dead]], and otherwise do nothing to contribute.
* [[spoiler: TheManBehindTheMan]]: To Carpainter and Mayor Monotoli. Also one interpretation of his relation with [[spoiler:Giygas]].
* MeaningfulName: Yeah, you can't deny he's quite porky.
* MobileMenace: Steals the chopper Ness is intending to use to fly to Scaraba. Jeff later finds its crashed wreckage in the swamp; Porky somehow managed to navigate it on foot. The kicker, though, is when he pops up in the Cave of the Past after a long absence.
** One theory revolves around the strange 'tree' at the cave's starting point (which doesn't do anything). In ''MOTHER'', the "God's Tail" was left in a cave specially for Ninten, placed there to warp him to Queen Mary. A similar-looking "tail" in the Cave of the Past may have been placed there for Porky, to bring him to [[spoiler:Giygas]].
* MoreThanMindControl: As demonstrated when he 'snaps out of' the Happy Happyism Cult brainwashing.
* [[spoiler:MouthOfSauron]]: Who better to be [[spoiler:the herald of Giygas]] than Ness' annoying neighbor?
* [[spoiler:NiceJobFixingItVillain]]: Taunts Ness to cry out and [-PRAY-] to his friends ("I know you have telepathy, or something") for help. [[spoiler:Guess what Giygas' one weakness is]]?
* NotSoHarmless
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: A particularly chilling one during [[spoiler:the final boss battle]].
* {{Retreaux}}: His battle music starts out like this.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: "..Um....it's going to ''seem'' like I'm running away... But perhaps I'll sneak off to another era [[NoExceptYes to think about my next plan]]."
* ShaveAndAHaircut: The most annoying door knock in the universe.
* SinisterMinister: Blithely resurfaces as a Priest in the Happy Happyist cult.
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:Heavily-armed Pokey]].
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Originally "Porky" in Japanese, but because the localization staff apparently missed the joke ([[FridgeLogic and yet kept all the other pig jokes about him and his family]]), his name in the English version is Pokey. Much later, SuperSmashBrosBrawl rectified the mistake and called him Porky, as did the ''MOTHER 3'' fan translation, and fans are divided on what they want to call him.
* SpiderTank: His preferred method of offence/defence/not dying.
* ThisLoserIsYou: Yup. Itoi considers Porky "a [[HumansAreFlawed symbol of mankind]]."
* UnfortunateName
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Is implied to have been friends with Ness at some point. Though why Ness didn't hang out with Picky instead is anyone's guess.
* WeWillMeetAgain: Once Giygas is destroyed, [[spoiler:Pokey uses time travel to escape into another era]], but not before taunting Ness one last time.
* YinYangClash: The Minches are a bizarro reflection of Ness' family. Porky does ''not'' like steak, which is Ness' canon favorite food.

The Universal Cosmic Destroyer who once again menaces Earth, and according to Buzz Buzz, successfully obliterates it [[BadFuture in the future]]. Things are... [[EldritchAbomination different]] [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity this]] time.

* AbstractApotheosis: Has become evil itself.
* BackgroundBoss: Played with; Giygas ''is'' the background.
* BigBad
* DiabolusExNihilo
* DoppelgangerAttack: Smacking him around causes Giygas to split into these, until there's literally a ''sea'' of undulating, screaming faces. Y'know, for kids.
* TheDreaded: Giygas: a physical manifestation of people's fear.
* EldritchAbomination: He doesn't have a form, he exists in the future and the past, and his only dialog is inspired by the trauma of viewing a violent murder scene misinterpreted by Itoi as a rape scene in a movie [[NightmareFuel that scarred him when he was a kid]].
* EldritchLocation: It's very easy to interpret him as being this as well, as it's implied that he's just ''that'' big and distorted.
* EvilIsVisceral: He looks like this when the Devil Machine is active. After that... it's a little hard to classify what he looks like, other than NightmareFuel personified. Giygas' first form provides one of the page images.
* GalacticConqueror
* LoveMakesYouEvil: It's suggested that his highly conflicted feelings of love for Mary and hate for mankind, his weakness in ''MOTHER'', are what pushed him over the edge to turn him into his present form.
* MadeOfEvil: In ''[[VideoGame/{{Mother1}} MOTHER]]'', he was an angry [[TheGreys grey alien]]. Now he is a disembodied entity of ''pure evil''.
* MadnessMantra: "Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness ''Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness '''Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness Ness NESS NESS NESS NESS NESS NESS NESS NESS'''''..."

* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: '''The Universal Cosmic Destroyer'''
* NoPronunciationGuide: Really, how do you pronounce "Giygas"?
** /'gaj.gəs/?
** Actually a case of SpellMyNameWithAnS. In Japan, its pronounced "geeg" and the ''[[VideoGame/{{Mother1}} EarthBound Zero]]'' prototype calls him the more directly-translated Giegue.
** Apparently, the most literal translation equals "Gyiyg" (as seen in the Japanese version's opening), pronounced, again, "geeg".
* OmnicidalManiac: They call him the Universal Cosmic Destroyer for a reason.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: He's immobile in both incarnations.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver
* RestrainingBolt: Pokey's "Devil's Machine."
* TheScream: Giygas' howling 'face' appears to be frozen like this.
* SurpriseCreepy
* TorturedAbomination
* UltimateEvil
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: You would think a series as cartoony and (initially) light-hearted as this would provide only ordinary NightmareFuel at worst, but [[SurpriseCreepy Giygas begs to differ]].

He developed a tendency to hide in trash cans to avoid confrontation. Despite this, he has a great deal of determination, even when it comes to the dreaded gym class. She is described as kind at heart, with a great sense of direction. Before the start of the adventure, Ana was unable to sleep due to odd dreams, and sets out with Ninten in hopes of finding her abducted mother. * InformedAttractiveness: When playing as him, you get a lot of attention from the ladies in Dalaam.
* JackOfAllStats: He can use [[TheRedMage both healing and offensive PSI]], and has decent overall stats as well.
* LookWhatICanDoNow: PK Starstorm Alpha.
* PsychicPowers
* TheRedMage: Has access to a variety of both healing and offensive PSI, unlike specialists Ness and Paula.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething

* DemotedToExtra
* HeroesLoveDogs
* TheLancer: Until he leaves the party.
* LovableCoward
--> King: I'm not going out again. I don't care if everyone thinks I'm a stubborn mutt.

* BlindingBangs
* BlondGuysAreEvil
* EnfanteTerrible
* [[spoiler:EvilCounterpart]]: To Ness.
* [[spoiler:FromNobodyToNightmare]]
* {{Gonk}}
* NotSoHarmless
* SlasherSmile: [[spoiler:Heavily-armed Pokey]].
* UnfortunateName

* DiabolusExNihilo
* GalacticConqueror

* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver
* RestrainingBolt: Pokey's "Devil's Machine."
* TheScream: Giygas' howling 'face' appears to be frozen like this.
* SurpriseCreepy
* TorturedAbomination
* UltimateEvil
* VileVillainSaccharineShow: You would think a series as cartoony and (initially) light-hearted as this would provide only ordinary NightmareFuel at worst, but [[SurpriseCreepy Giygas begs to differ]].

* [[spoiler:DistressedDude: Is held captive in the siege of Saturn Valley in Chapter Seven.]]
* HandicappedBadass
* HeavySleeper: He's even asleep on his naming screen! Boney has to drag him by the neck through the rain during most of his introduction scene. It's implied that he's a night owl, but still, it takes about three quarters of the cutscene for him to finally wake up.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: His Thief Tools (wall staples, a scary mask, a siren beetle, a tickle stick, smoke bombs, and a hypno-pendulum) are all things he can use in fights.
* [[spoiler: LaserGuidedAmnesia: In chapter 4, the bassist of the DCMC, Lucky, is revealed to be Duster with amnesia.]]
* MasterOfNone: He's a member of your party most of the game, and aside from his status effects, he's mostly just around to bash things.
** LightningBruiser: But he does have the strongest basic physical attacks, and given enough levels he will eventually outspeed Boney. ''[[HandicappedBadass With a limp.]]''
* MushroomSamba: Along with quite a bit of NightmareFuel.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: After the mission in Osohe Castle that Wess sends him on, he's never shown stealing anything, despite being classed as a thief.
* SteppingStoneSword: Wall staples, [[CaptainObvious which can be driven into the wall.]]

[[WMG: Wess]]

Duster's elderly father, and mentor in the Thief Arts. He is an extremely competent fighter [[spoiler:and dancer...]] despite his advanced age.
----
* AbusiveParents: He constantly belittles his son, Duster. At one point, it is mentioned that some of the villagers believe that he actually gave Duster his limp.
* BadassGrandpa: He's in his 60's (or thereabouts), and he's so tough, the game ''{{nerf}}s him'' by making him attack rarely during [[GuestStarPartyMember the short time he's in your party]]. One of his rarer attacks is enough to [[OneHitKill one-shot]] anything you can encounter at the time.
* BadassNormal
* BlatantLies: "[[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments I'm not going to stick my butt out or anything, though.]]"

[[WMG: Kumatora]]
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Kumatora_Clay_2900.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:200: ''Outta my way, dammit!'']]

The brash, bold Princess of Osohe Castle. She is extremely well-versed in psychic techniques despite her young age; particularly in the branches that allow for severely injuring others. She accompanies Lucas on his journey across the Islands in search of the Egg of Light and, later, the Needles.
----
* BadassAdorable
* {{Bifauxnen}}: A little kid mistakes her for a boy at some point in Chapter 2.
* BlackMagicianGirl
* EverythingsBetterWithPrincesses: [[spoiler: She's a princess in name only.]]
* [[spoiler:HappilyAdopted: As she lost both her parents as a baby before being taken away on the "white ship"; the Magypsies agreed to raise her as their own.]]
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Kumatora is universally described as strong, tough, and masculine, and off-screen, is capable of single-handedly smacking down two bodyguards that Lucas isn't even allowed to approach because they're too dangerous. Yet in actual combat she's a SquishyWizard who has the overall lowest physical damage ratio, even compared to a ''dog''.
* TheLadette
* [[SirSwearsALot Lady Swears-a-Lot]]: Although what profanity there is in the fan translation isn't very strong, most of it comes courtesy of [[TomboyPrincess Kumatora]].
* MushroomSamba: With a bit of NightmareFuel mixed in.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Her name means ''bear-tiger''.
* PsychicPowers
* RebelliousPrincess: [[spoiler: Though she turns out not to really be the princess of anything.]]
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething
* SheCleansUpNicely: In her normal attire, a little girl mistakes her for a guy. [[spoiler:In Chapter 4, however, she has to disguise as a waitress to get behind-the-scenes at Club Titiboo in order to convince an [[LaserGuidedAmnesia amnesiac]] Duster who he really is. Suddenly, many of the men find her attractive. She even tells Lucas to stop changing his expression!]]
* SquishyWizard
* TomboyPrincess
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Pink Hair]]

[[WMG: The Magypsies]]

Seven mysterious, flighty, and secretive individuals with immense power; capable of bestowing psychic techniques on those they deem worthy. They enjoy tea parties and interior decor. [[spoiler:They guard the Seven Needles, and each Magypsy is bound to one by their lifeforce.]]
----
* AmbiguousGender: They are neither man nor woman, nor even human. They usually refer to themselves as female, but Kumatora refers to them as male. [[spoiler:[[BlackSheep Locria]] seems pretty clearly male.]]
* CampGay
* CoolShades: Doria.
* FunnyAfro: Aeolia.
* HeavySleeper: Phrygia.
* {{Immortality}}: A Magypsy will only truly "die" if their Needle is pulled.
* MusicalThemeNaming: The Magypsies are named for the modes of the diatonic scale.
** MeaningfulName: [[spoiler:The locrian mode is considered to be a dissonant mode. [[FaceHeelTurn Guess what Locria did]].]]
* NiceHat: Doria and Phrygia.
* [[spoiler:ParentalSubstitute: All of them, but especially Ionia, to Kumatora.]]
* SayItWithHearts
* {{Sexophone}}: The {{leitmotif}} of the Magypsies.
* {{Wholesome Crossdresser}}s: The Magypsies are all psychic guardians for good [[spoiler:except Locria/Fassad]].
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Pink Hair]]

[[WMG: Salsa]]
[[quoteright:200:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Salsa_Clay_9018.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:200: "Salsa apologized profusely!"]]

A cute and talented performing monkey, forced into the service of Fassad under threat of severe harm befalling his lady (monkey) love, Samba.
----
* ADayInTheLimelight: He's the star of Chapter 3, but doesn't return afterward until [[spoiler:Chapter 7, where he and his girlfriend save Lucas from certain devouring by the Ultimate Chimera]]. Even then, he's only back in the party very briefly, and vanishes from the story entirely after that.
* ApologeticAttacker: One of Salsa's skills is to "apologize profusely" to the enemy. This is a ContinuityNod to one of Porky's totally useless actions when he's a GuestStarPartyMember in ''EarthBound''. Unlike Porky's, though, it actually ''does'' something.
* ButtMonkey: Literally.
* ElectricTorture: Constantly on the wrong side of it, to the point that it REALLY stops being funny after the first few times.
* EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys
* IHaveYourWife: The Pigmasks have his girlfriend.
* SoLongAndThanksForAllTheGear: Perhaps the only reason he returns to the party at all is so you can try to prevent this.
* TeamPet: Sort of fills the role in a couple places, most notably when teamed up with Kumatora.

[[WMG: Yokuba/[[{{Woolseyism}} Fassad]]/[[spoiler:Locria]]]]

A travelling salesman, hawking "happiness" in the form of Happy Boxes and town renovation. [[spoiler:He is in the service of King P and the Pigmasks, and ushers in the corruption that destroys Tazmily.]]
----
* ArabOilSheikh: Fassad ''looks'' like one, in any case.
** It's also worth noting that 'Fassad' is an Arabic word that means [[MeaningfulName 'corruption']]. It's also a pun on Façade (no, not the game.). And it's not even official.
* [[spoiler: BackFromTheDead and KilledOffForReal: After falling from Thunder Tower, he's brought back to life with two musical horns attached. Much later, after the third encounter, he plummets into the sewers and either dies from drowning or disappearing when his Needle is pulled.]]
* BadBoss: He ''will'' make you want to choke him to death before Salsa's chapter is over.
* BerserkButton: He completely blows his lid after you [[spoiler:destroy his horns in his final battle]].
--> "[[spoiler:[[OhCrap Miracle Fassad tried PK Starstorm!]]]]"
* [[spoiler:{{Black Sheep}}: Of the Magypsies.]]
* TheCorrupter: Serves as this to the entire population of Tazmily. And he enjoys his job very much.
* CrutchCharacter: In Salsa's chapter, though Fassad only helpes out when he feels like it.
* TheDragon: [[spoiler: At least until the Masked Man shows up.]]
* EvilLaugh: "Nwehehehehehehehehe!"
** That's one "Nwe" and eight "he"s.
* [[spoiler: FaceHeelTurn: He's one of the Magypsies]].
* FateWorseThanDeath: [[spoiler: After you defeat Miracle Fassad for the last time, he falls into a sewer, too wounded to so much as move. Since he's later revealed to be a magypsy, this means that he's stuck, drowning, immobile, and alive, until the needle is pulled at the end of the game.]]
* GuestStarPartyMember: A notable one, as it's likely that he'll be the one doing all the damage while Salsa is taking all the hits (and doing his best to disable enemies so he doesn't get hit).
* {{Jerkass}}
* KickTheDog: To Salsa. Over. And over. And over. To the point of instant MoralEventHorizon.
* MakeAnExampleOfThem: Anyone who doesn't play ball and purchase a high quality Happy Box gets their house torched by lightning.
* MeaningfulName: Fassad's name in the Japanese version was "Yokuba", which comes from [[spoiler:the Japanese word for "greed"]]. His name in the fan translation comes from the Arabic word [[spoiler:for "corruption"]] and coincidentally, [[spoiler:it sounds like the word "façade"]]. Fassad could also be something of a reference to Lier X. Agerate, a minor character from ''[=EarthBound=]''.
* [[spoiler: MusicalSpoiler: His horns the second and third time around play a somewhat messy version of the Magypsy's theme whenever he talks.]]
* NoOneCouldHaveSurvivedThat
* [[spoiler: PetTheDog: His pet rat.]]
* PropheticName: The Locrian mode, the scale that [[spoiler:Locria]] is named after, is also known as the 'Diabolus in Musica', a Latin phrase meaning 'Devil in Music', in reference to its dissonant tone. This is likely the reason why the name "[[spoiler:Locria]]" was chosen for the traitorous [[spoiler:Magypsy]].
* [[spoiler: RecurringBoss]]
* TheReveal: [[spoiler: While you're heading through the [[VeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon Empire Porky Building,]] you come across a Magypsy's shell home. Inside you find several banana peels, a pair of musical horns, and Fassad's clothing.]]
* RunningGag: Fassad isn't afraid to stop whatever he's doing to eat a banana then throw the peel on the floor. [[spoiler: [[ChekhovsGun This turns out to be his quite literal downfall at the top of Thunder Tower.]]]]
* SnakeOilSalesman: Wouldn't YOU be happier with a Happy Box?
* StockholmSyndrome: Fassad may be a chode, but he's an effective teammate (a lot more than Porky or Thomas), and a lot stronger than Salsa. Itoi intentionally wanted to provoke this feeling in ''players themselves''.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Luxury Bananas. They even heal him for more than they heal your party members.
* {{Turncoat}}: See "The Reveal."
* [[spoiler:VillainousCrossdresser: Inverted -- the rest of the Magypsies are all psychic crossdressing guardians for good, except the comparatively conservatively-dressed Locria/Fassad.]]
* [[spoiler:WeCanRebuildHim]]

[[WMG: The Masked Man]]

The silent, foreboding commander of the Pigmask army. He is the only individual aside from Lucas capable of pulling the Needles, and is Lucas' main rival in deciding the fate of the world.

[[spoiler:For more character tropes, see Claus' character entry.]]
----
* [[spoiler: AntiVillain: [[SlidingScaleOfAntiVillains Type]] [[PelagianVillain 4]]]].
* ArmCannon
* [[spoiler:BackFromTheDead: Claus is the Masked Man, your main opposition in pulling the seven needles.]]
* BerserkButton: Put up any sort of damage-lessening shield, and he will respond with the Shield Killer followed by his strongest PSI attack. [[spoiler:Revive any of your teammates in the final battle, and he'll immedeately knock them back down by electrocution, followed by PK Love Omega.]]
* [[spoiler:BrainwashedAndCrazy: Porky states at the end of the game that the Masked Man is nothing but a puppet, and there isn't a shred of humanity left in him. This is supported earlier in the game when Phrygia can sense Lucas' heart after he pulls his share of Needles, but not the heart of Claus, even though he's been pulling Needles as well. It isn't until the end of the game that Claus regains his humanity, after his mother's voice pleads with him.]]
* CallBack: [[spoiler:The background in his final battle is from Ness's Nightmare.]]
* [[spoiler: CyberneticsEatYourSoul: And how! Claus goes from a hyperactive, cheery kid to a silent, emotionless Pigmask Army Commander.]]
* [[spoiler:DiedInYourArmsTonight: Poor Lucas...]]
* TheDragon: For Chapters 7 and 8.
* [[spoiler:DyingAsYourself]]: [[TearJerker It works.]]
* [[spoiler:EvilRedhead: {{Subverted|Trope}} - he's just BrainwashedAndCrazy.]]
* ImplacableMan: In your first few encounters, if he isn't leaving behind a boss to hassle you, he will simply swing his CoolSword and [[ShockAndAwe summon a massive lightning strike]] [[TotalPartyKill to wipe you out]]. Eventually [[spoiler:Lucas gets his Franklin Badge back]], evening the odds. [[spoiler:It doesn't last, and at the end he's right back to being utterly invincible.]]
* LogicalWeakness: Doesn't register a heartbeat, which renders your combo system useless.
* [[spoiler:LongLostSibling: Claus is the Masked Man.]]
* [[spoiler:[[LukeIAmYourFather Lucas, I Am Your Brother]]]]
* [[spoiler: ManChild]]: Mentally, he's just a bigoted [[spoiler:thirteen-year-old bully]], with the solipsism to match.
* MaskPower
* MismatchedEyes: The Masked Man is often depicted with these in fanart, even though it isn't actually in the game. This probably is based off the end of Chapter Seven when he leaps at you to engage in combat. The eye under the lens on his helmet [[GlowingEyesOfDoom glows red]].
* MyRulesAreNotYourRules: He gets to attack ''twice'' per round. [[spoiler:In the final battle, this usually enables him to inflict fatal damage on every turn.]]
* [[spoiler: PostFinalBoss]]
* [[spoiler:RedemptionEqualsDeath]]
* RoboticPsychopath: [[spoiler:Or so you'd think.]]
* TheStoic: Never emotes in anyway, save for chuckling when a Pigmask Colonel berates a Clayman.
* [[spoiler:SuicideByCop]]: Deflecting Thunder PK onto [[spoiler:Lucas' Franklin Badge]].
* [[spoiler:ThatManIsDead]]: King P ''gloats'' that this is the case.
* [[spoiler:UnwillingRoboticisation / WeCanRebuildHim]]
* TheVoiceless: He is never shown to speak on-screen, though he is shown to chuckle when a Pigmask Colonel berates a Clayman. It is implied he does speak on occasion when a Pigmask conversing with Lucas via cell phone comments that Lucas' voice sounds unusually cheery today.
* WalkingSpoiler

[[WMG: King P[[spoiler:orky Minch]]]]

The reclusive "king" of New Pork City, and leader of the Pigmask Army. He has a certain penchant for childlike and self-aggrandizing behavior.

[[spoiler:For more character tropes, see Porky/Pokey's character entry under the Mother 2 tab.]]

* AnimalMotifs: Pigs, for [[FatBastard fairly obvious reasons]].
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: Porky's fate at the end]]... though (as someone says in-game) it may be exactly what he wanted. Notice that he's still sticking his tongue out at you even after it's revealed that he's trapped forever.
* AxCrazy
* BigBad
* [[spoiler: BlindingBangs]]
* TheCaligula
* ContinuityNod: [[spoiler:His playroom is full of small nods to ''[=EarthBound=]'', and his first battle theme is an [[{{Retraux}} 8-bit throwback]], just like in the previous game. This hints that he was Ness's friend.]]
* DragonAscendant: [[spoiler: TheDragon to Giygas in the previous game until he's taken out, he then eventually makes it to the Nowhere Islands where the events of the game take place, and becomes the BigBad there.]]
* FatBastard: You have to appreciate his audacity in theming his entire empire and army around his porcine build.
* [[spoiler: FinalBoss: In the sense of being the last major challenge of the game. The fight afterwards is more of a Post Final Boss.]]
* AGodAmI
* ImmortalityHurts: Shigesato Itoi has confirmed that he will still be alive [[spoiler:5.5 billion years from now]].
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: He coughs and wheezes in the fight against him. The death part is subverted in that [[{{Immortality}} he'll neve die]].
* ItAmusedMe: Everything he did was because he was bored with omnipotence and wanted a quick laugh.
* LaughingMad: When Lucas confronts him in the last dungeon, he reveals that he knows what will happen if the Masked Man pulls the last Needle.... and the prospect of total oblivion sends him into a fit of gibbering, insane laugher.
* NietzscheWannabe
* OmnicidalManiac: He already expressed his belief in ''EarthBound'' that Giygas should destroy the universe. His real motivation all along: to eradicate everyone who doesn't like him. (Admittedly a big field to go after, but still...)
* [[spoiler: PsychopathicManchild: He tries to destroy the world just for the adrenaline rush, and that's after he raped and corrupted Nowhere Island.]]
* {{Sealed Evil in a Ca|n}}psule: The Absolutely Safe/Absolute Safety Capsule, in which the user is indeed [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Absolutely Safe]], [[spoiler:but can never leave]].
* SelfDisposingVillain: See above.
* [[spoiler: SpiderTank: As with before, his preferred means of combat.]]
* TimeAbyss: [[spoiler:Porky]] is between 1,000 and 10,000 years old when you finally meet him. ''Maybe''...
* TimeIsDangerous: [[spoiler:The body of an invalid old man, with the mind of a deranged child]].
* VictoryIsBoring: Seeks to destroy the entire Earth because he wants to cure himself of his extreme case of boredom.
* [[spoiler: WhoWantsToLiveForever: Even after the heat death of the solar system, ''[[FridgeHorror Porky will still be alive]]''.]]
* YouCannotGraspTheTrueForm: [[spoiler:What did Porky do?! Porky sprayed something! Porky sucked something!]] Of course, this is in the tradition of Mother final bosses, coming after The Form of Giegue's Attack was Inexplicable and, of course, the Trope Namer You Cannot Grasp The True Form of Giygas's Attack.
