All principal heroines in ''VisualNovel/KoihimeMusou'' are [[{{expy}} expies]] of the (male) generals from the original ''Literature/RomanceOfTheThreeKingdoms'' epic and the former's names are derived from the latter's by reading the original Chinese characters in their names as kanji. Additionally, each sport a true, "private" name usually reserved for close friends, alongside a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_style_name courtesy name]].

[[folder: Characters of the Shoku (Shu) Kingdom]]

!!Kan'u (Private name: Aisha; Courtesy name: Unchou; Expy: Guan Yu)
->Voiced by: Nami Kurokawa (credited as Mina Motoyama in the visual novel)

The main heroine of the first game and the protagonist of the anime series. In the game, Kan'u shows up shortly after Hongou is transported back in time and saves him from a group of bandits. Due to Hongou's strange attire and manner of speech, she subsequently mistakes him to be the "Messenger from Heaven" and becomes the first person to vow her loyalty to him. In the sequel, Kan'u is relegated to the position of Ryuubi's second in command and confidante.

In the anime, Kan'u is a famous bandit hunter known as the Beautiful Black-haired Bandit Fighter and wields the Green Dragon Crescent Blade.
----
* BarehandedBladeBlock: Kan'u pulls one off in episode 11 of season one
* BerserkButton: Don't mess with Kazuto.
* BigBrotherWorship: Kan'u's unnamed brother was shown as her selfless protector, going so far as to save her life at the cost of his own. It was probably by having such an admirable older brother, that Kan'u developed her own BigSisterInstinct when the time came.
* BigSisterInstinct: Rinrin is her surrogate little sister and Kan'u has promised to take care of her.
* CelibateHeroine: Kan'u's primarily focused on her goal of saving a war-torn Ancient China. She is also portrayed as an easily embarrassed ClingyJealousGirl and flustered at even the slightest intimate comment or gesture (which makes her usually aggressive UnwantedHarem in the anime all the more entertaining). The exception to this portrayal is in the last two episodes of season one.
* CoolBigSis: To Rinrin.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her entire family was murdered by bandits when she was young.
* DemotedToExtra: Was originally the main heroine in the first game and animated series, but beginning with ''Shin Koihime'' she played second fiddle to Ryuubi. Worse, by the third game, Kan'u's relegated to a supporting character of other spotlight heroines.
* DrillSergeantNasty: She becomes this way towards Kazuto in the first game after several battles, supposedly to keep him in shape and top form, but this may actually be a sign of her being a Type-B {{Tsundere}}.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Kan'u may be a well-known bandit hunter, but when it comes time for food and shelter she has to do odd jobs like cooking, cleaning, and even working in a {{Meido}} cafe to make money.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: When people hear of the Beautiful Black-haired Bandit Fighter they are expecting she's a stunningly beautiful woman. They tend to feel disappointed when they meet Kan'u, as they find her [[GenericCuteness rather plain-looking]].
* FunbagAirbag: In the OVA, when Koumei tries to buy some bread at the school canteen, she gets shoved back by the crowd and plows face-first into Kan'u's chest
* TheHeroine: In the anime she's the main character who goes on a journey to get rid of evil bandits.
* LustObject: Sousou is particularly fixated on trying to get Kan'u to sleep with her and she swears that she will make Kan'u hers, whether Kan'u wants it or not.
* MuggingTheMonster: Bandits think Kan'u's an easy mark. They find out the hard way she's a combat veteran (first game)/famous bandit-hunter (anime).
* ParentalSubstitute: She calls herself Rinrin's older sister figure, but Kan'u can also act like a surrogate mother to her. In fact, people mistake her for Rinrin's mother more often than not.
* RapunzelHair: Her hair goes past her ''knees''.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: She's a well-known beauty with long black hair and fair skin.
* RedBaron: The Beautiful Black-haired Bandit Fighter.
* SlipKnotPonytail: In ''Otome Tairan'' epsiode 11, after she and [[spoiler:Chouryou]] have an intense fight.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's completely scared of ghosts.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears thigh-high stockings.

!!Chouhi (Private name: Rinrin; Courtesy name: Yokutoku; Expy: Zhang Fei)
->Voiced by: Miya Serizono (credited as Hiroka Nishizawa in the anime)

A talkative and always cheerful girl. Although she is small and very smart in some things, she is naive in others, yet very powerful and strong, capable of competing against Kan'u in armed melee combat. In the game, she joins Kazuto along with Kan'u after the two discover him together.

In the anime, she is one of the main characters and the first person to join Kan'u.
----
* AndroclesLion: Subverted since Chouhi has mistaken wild animals for her childhood pets several times, so instead of happy reunions, the characters end up having to run for their lives.
* AnimalMotifs: The tiger.
* BalloonBelly: In episode 7 of season one
* BareYourMidriff
* BigSisterWorship: She and Kan'u aren't real sisters, but Chouhi clearly adores her.
* BoyishShortHair
* BrattyHalfPint: To cope with her loneliness, she became a troublemaker and formed a band of "bandits" with the other children of her village to play pranks on the adults until Kan'u stopped her.
* BrutalHonesty: She takes the "brutal" part of the trope to its finest.
* CatapultNightmare
* ClingyJealousGirl: She at first doesn't like Koumei because she fears Koumei will steal Kan'u away from her.
* CuteClumsyGirl: Chouhi immediately stumbles and breaks things when told to perform some basic manual tasks.
* ConstantlyCurious: Played for laughs whenever she asks questions about the female body and physical intimacy that embarrasses almost everyone. Kan'u almost always refuses to answer.
* CuteBruiser
* CuteLittleFangs
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her parents were killed by bandits and she moved with her grandfather until he died, leaving her on her own.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: And, apparently, sisterhood, since this is how Kan'u and Chouhi met.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: In the anime, she's the second main character after Kan'u.
* DoesNotLikeShoes: She wears ankle wraps that leave her toes and heels free.
* FieryRedhead
* ExpressiveAccessory: Her tiger hairpin always mimics her expression.
* HairDecorations: She wears a tiger hairpin.
* IdiotsCannotCatchColds: She attempts to prove this theory at the end of season one; it doesn't work.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: She doesn't seem to get the problem with going around in little clothes, which usually leads to Kan'u asking her to PleasePutSomeClothesOn.
* InsaneTrollLogic: Chouhi believes that by letting her BladeOnAStick fall on a crossroads, whatever direction it lands pointing towards is the divinely chosen correct path
* LittleMissBadass
* ScarfOfAsskicking
* ThirdPersonPerson: She always refers to herself as Rinrin instead of using a pronoun.
* TooManyBelts: Two overlapping, both purely ornamental given her skin-tight spats.
* QuickDrawDecision: Chouhi gives one when Enshou and her cronies take Sonshoukou hostage.
* VerbalTic: Ends all of her sentences with 'なのだ', 'nanoda', in the anime adaptation.

!!Ryuubi (Private name: Touka; Courtesy name: Gentoku; Expy: Liu Bei)
->Voiced by: Creator/MaiGoto (credited as Oto Agumi in the visual novel)

The new heroine of the sequel and the young queen of the kingdom of Shu. Being quite young she is naive, often reluctant to go to war, and hates paperwork (much to the chargin of Kan'u who as a result often scolds the young queen and reminds her of her duties), but has a lot of confidence on her subordinates.
----
* TheChosenOne: [[spoiler:After hearing Kada's explanation of the "Dragon Sword" (see the ChekhovsGun entry in the main page), everyone has come to the conclusion that Ryuubi, with the sword she now has, is the only one with a chance of slaying Ukitsu. She actually delivers in the final battle when she stabs Ukitsu, killing him.]]
* DamselInDistress:
** Twice in the ''Shin Koihime'' anime. On both occassions, she's attacked by the [[OnlySixFaces same group of bandits]], both cases being rescued by Kan'u and company. The second nearly enters AttemptedRape territory.
** Happens yet again in ''Otome Tairan'' when she tries to help Gien, only to get into trouble herself, and resulting in another AttemptedRape incident.
* {{Gainaxing}}: Purposely done in episode 8.
* GirlishPigtails: She wears her hair in pigtails, combined with OdangoHair.
* FallenPrincess: A flashback in the ''Shin Koihime'' anime reveals how Ryuubi's [[spoiler: identity and sword were stolen by the fake Ryuubi]].
* HairDecorations: She wears a feather hair ornament on each side of her head.
* HilariouslyAbusiveChildhood: Ryuubi's mother threw her into a nearby river whenever she thought about how Ryuubi lost the family heirloom
* HypocriticalHumor: After getting ambushed by bandits, Ryuubi states she's smart enough not to be a DistressedDamsel again. Seconds later, she's back into the role
* IdiotHair: She has a cowlick that stands prominently atop her head.
* ItWasAGift: In ''Otome Tairan'', Ryuubi gets a new sword, one ForgedByTheGods, [[spoiler:specifically the Dragon God from ''Shin Koihime'']] to replace her AncestralWeapon that was [[spoiler: fried by lightning]]
* OdangoHair: Her hair is arranged in a pair of small hair buns.
* OjouRinglets: She has straight hair with twintails that curl into ringlets to denote she's the young queen of the kingdom of Shu.
* RapunzelHair: Her hair goes past her waist.
* {{Robinsonade}}: [[spoiler:Played with in the ''Shin Koihime'' OVA: flashbacks showed her going on a trip, and apparently she disappeared without a trace. She ended up on what she presumed was a DesertedIsland, but it turned out to be the same island resort the rest of the cast went to (she was rescued by the Nanban Barbarians who lived there; apparently they never ventured far enough from their home to the "resort" area until the [[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever Giant Octo-Payapaya incident]])]]
* RoseHairedSweetie: She has rose-colored hair and she's a sweet, cheerful and innocent young girl.
* StealthClothes: When raiding the pantry after her failed diet.
* WeightWoe: While she doesn't look any visibly heavier since the ''Shin Koihime'' anime, [[spoiler: Ryuubi freaks-out over Chouhi saying how soft her lap feels in ''Otome Tairan''. She decides to try dieting and exercising to lose the extra weight, but due to poor self-control and physical weakness, her efforts don't go as planned. After attempting to starve herself, she just can't take it anymore and finally gives in. Although the unhealthy dieting and exercising ceases, Ryuubi continues to worry about her weight]]. Also fits as TruthInTelevision.
* WhiteMage: All of her super techniques in the visual novel are healing moves of varying power levels.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pink hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears thigh-high boots and stockings.

!!Chouun (Private name: Sei; Courtesy name: Shiryuu; Expy: Zhao Yun)
->Voiced by: Creator/EmiMotoi (credited as Nana Nogami in the visual novel)

A girl who fought the To army alongside Kan'u, after which Chouun met Kazuto and took a liking to him, promising to join his army later. She has a habit of running around the city as the masked hero of justice 'Butterfly Mask' in her patrol shift.

In the anime, she is the second person to join the Kan'u's group, but she soon separates herself from the group, helping them from afar.
----
* AnimalMotif: The Butterfly when she in her PaperThinDisguise.
* BerserkButton: Don't eat her menma, she won't forgive you.
* CleavageWindow
* CombatPragmatist: Takes a more strategic approach to fights than the other generals, which allows her to win against opponents that they can't defeat.
* DeathGlare: She'll give one to whosoever ''dares'' to even look at her TrademarkFavoriteFood. Somewhat [[{{Flanderization}} flanderized]] progressively throughout the anime.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Her lectures and scoldings are the ones that Bachou and Chouhi are most afraid of, moreso than Kan'u's. In the game, Sei's unit is likened to a modern commando outfit which would imply a certain increase in training standards as well.
* FoeTossingCharge: Gets to pull one off in the first season finale.
* GoodBadGirl: Lampshaded by her statement, "What's wrong with my knees?"; nothing's wrong...well, not that any of the fanboys mind...
* HairIntakes: The two "cat ears" that are part of her hairdo.
* HenshinHero: Invoked by her Butterfly Mask persona.
* MysteriousProtector: She tries to be this as Butterfly Mask. Unfortunately, it doesn't work out too well.
* PaperThinDisguise: Her "disguise" as Butterfly Mask... consists of just a butterfly mask. It mostly works for her in the games, but not so much in the anime.
* PutOnABus: During mid-season of the first anime, but subverted once the bus pulls into the station for the finale. The same thing happens again in ''Shin Koihime'', with Butterfly Mask attempting to steal the show for the final scene (it doesn't really work.)
* [[spoiler: PregnantBadass: Becomes one in Eiyuutan 1, being one of the first of Kazuto's harem to become pregnant with his child.]]
* SeeYouInHell: Said to Kan'u before facing off against an overwhelming force of bandits on a very narrow cliff; fortunately, they get out of it
* ShortHairWithTail: Short part in a straight bob, long part of her hair in a ponytail tied at the nape of her neck.
* TheTease
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Menma, or fermented bamboo shoots, typically with plenty of alcohol. On some occasions, she can even eat them on their own (it's a condiment).
* TheTrickster: More apparent in the games, but she does love sowing a small amount of chaos just for her own amusement or to make a point.
* WalkingTheEarth: Wandered about looking for a worthy master before the events of the game. She also mentions that she used to travel with her brothers.
* WittyBanter: Chouun's just too good at it.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has light blue hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears white thigh-high stockings.

!!Bachou (Private name: Sui; Courtesy name: Mouki; Expy: Ma Chao)
->Voiced by: Maki Kobayashi (Mio Ogawa in the visual novel)

Chouhi's friend and daughter of the late Batou. She is really a simple, straight-forward, and easily embarrassed tomboyish girl. She wields a simple looking spear but is very strong in both power and form. The third person to join the group.
----
* {{Adorkable}}: The slightest hint of sexuality or romantic interest will turn Sui into a stuttering mess. It's absolutely adorable to watch.
* HeavySleeper: Whatever Chouun's "retribution" was to Bachou, she was completely unaware of it in season one. In the ''Shin Koihime'' anime, Batai groped her and drew on her face without her stirring.
* IAteWhat: It's implied Bachou might've added something extra to the fish for dinner...
* LivingLieDetector: Apparently, being exceptionally skilled allows Bachou to tell if a person is lying by merely looking at their fighting stance.
* MushroomSamba: Gets a trip from eating a psychedelic mushroom in the mountains. [[EroticEating She's got an interesting way of eating them, too]]
* RapunzelHair: Her ponytail is about as long as she is tall.
* TomboyishPonytail
* YouKilledMyFather: Bachou tries to kill Sousou at one point for this. Ultimately subverted when it's revealed her father died falling off his horse.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears white thigh-high boots.

!!Shokatsuryou (Private name: Shuri; Courtesy name: Koumei; Expy: Zhuge Liang)
->Voiced by: Erika Narumi (credited as Suzune Kusunoki in the visual novel)

A shy, kind, and reserved girl around the same age as Rinrin, but is a smart, good strategist in battle. However, her naive and child-like nature often overshadows these attributes, and has been known to act on the same level of immaturity as Chōhi. She wants to become a great scholar like her master Shibaki. The fourth to join the group.
----
* ChekhovsGun: Koumei talks about how lightning often strikes metal in episode nine of ''Shin Koihime''.
* CovertPervert: Koumei secretly "researches" certain carnal arts in the visual novels to please Kazuto; she manages to rope in [[spoiler:Hōtō]] in ''Shin Koihime''. The anime uses this but for no apparent reason, other than to simply invoke the trope.
* {{Determinator}}: So much that even Chouhi's impressed.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She's a really sweet, kind-hearted and helpful young girl.
* InSeriesNickname: In the visual novels, due to her tendency to stutter "[[VerbalTic Hawawa~]]" when she's nervous, she's earned the nickname of being the "Hawawa Strategist"
* JudgmentOfSolomon: In ''Otome Tairan'', Chouhi and Moukaku are engaged in a tug-of-war over the ownership of the Nanban elephant, Paya-paya, declaring that Moukaku won even though she let go because she noticed that the animal was suffering.
* NiceGirl
* OnlySaneWoman
* ShrinkingViolet: She is quite shy and timid.
* StockingFiller: She wears garters to hold up her stockings.
* TheStrategist: Unsurprisingly, given who she's an expy of.
* TokenMiniMoe
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: She's afraid of heights.
* WiseBeyondHerYears: She's quite mature and wise for a girl of her age.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears white thigh-high stockings.

!!Kouchuu (Private name: Shion; Courtesy name: Kanshou; Expy: Huang Zhong)
->Voiced by: Yuu Amamiya (credited as Kuu Lida in the visual novel)

A noble woman and a skilled archer with great eyesight and incredible skill in archery. In the game, her daughter Riri was kidnapped by Enshou's men to make Kouchuu fight Kazuto's army. Thanks to Choun, Kazuto's group was able to rescue Riri and returned her to Kouchuu. The rescue allows her to see how Kazuto is a good person, and she offers her services to him and fights at his side.

In the anime, her daughter is kidnapped by bandits and they try to force her to assassinate an official that has been cracking down on bandits. Kan'u and her friends must try to rescue the child before the assassination can take place. She's the fifth and last to join the group.
----
* ActionMom: It's not a pretty story behind her "action".
* BadassCape
* CleavageWindow
* DotingParent: She adores her daughter.
* RantInducingSlight: In her rant on how she's going to torture [[spoiler:the fake Ryuubi]], complete with demonic FacialMarkings
* RapunzelHair: Her hair reaches down to her knees.
* TeamMom: In the visual novels, she serves in this role in addition to being an actual mother, due to having the most life experience out of the heroines. Even the worldly Sei acknowledges this.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In the OVA, Kouchuu appears as a commentator, then mysteriously replaced by her daughter Riri. It takes a BrickJoke after the credits to reveal where she is: [[{{fetish}} locked and tied up inside a gym]] by God knows who.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has light purple hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears black thigh-high stockings.

!!Gengan (Private name: Kikyo; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Yan Yan)
->Voiced by: Shizuka Arai (visual novel, anime; credited as Ayano Shirai in the visual novel)

A single female federal lord that was the teacher to Gien, she decommissioned her from straining the promise that Gien would not draw her sword. Even though she has duties as a federal lord, she does do some leisurely activities ranging from drinking alcohol to attending and betting on horse races
----
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite being a district lord, Gengan doen't seem like someone to be taken seriously. Lampshaded by the girls in ''Otome Tairan'', yet Gengan simply laughs it off

!!Gien (Private name: En'ya; Courtesy name: Buncho; Expy: Wei Yan)
->Voiced by: Creator/HiromiHirata (credited as Hikaru Kaga in the visual novel)

A warrior and a devoted bodyguard of Ryuubi.
----
* BodyguardCrush: On Ryuubi.
* InsultMisfire: Played with in the following dialogue in ''Otome Tairan'':
-->'''Gien:''' Shut up, you flat-chested midget!
-->'''Chouhi:''' What?! [[CompletelyMissingThePoint Apologize to Shuri]]!
* LoveAtFirstSight: Gien towards Ryuubi, due to her BigSisterAttraction; ironically, it's the title of the episode she appears in for ''Otome Tairan''
* SkunkStripe: She has black hair with white streaks on the right side.
* TooKinkyToTorture: In ''Otome Tairan'', she gets punished for insubordination by Gengan and is tied up and tickled using a catnip twig. Rather than being played for laughs, her reaction [[TheImmodestOrgasm is rather erotic]]

!!Batai (Private name: Tanpopo; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Ma Dai)
->Voiced by: Ringo Aoba

Bachou's cousin. Despite being younger than Bachou, she has no issues being around men. In fact she often teases Bachō about the latter's issues with men.
----
* BalloonBelly: Batai in episode 4 of season three
* CheshireCatGrin
* CombatPragmatist: Batai can't stand-up to Bachou's abilities so she tries to use cheap tricks and deception to win fights; it doesn't work
* IShallTauntYou: She's able to defeat Gien in their first meeting by taunting her, thus starting a rivalry that lasts for the rest of the game.

!!Houtou (Private name: Hinari; Courtesy name: Shigen; Expy: Pang Tong)
->Voiced by: Creator/YukoGoto (credited as Shino Kujou in the visual novel)

Shuri's closest friend, who's almost always with her, and even shares her hobby of reading perverted books. Her outfit resembles that of a witch. Her habit of saying "Awawa" has earned her the nickname "Awawa Strategist".
----
* GirlishPigtails
* RapunzelHair: Her twintails go past her waist.
* RobeAndWizardHat: She dresses like a witch for some reason.
* ShrinkingViolet
* TokenMiniMoe

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Characters of the Gi (Wei) Kingdom]]

!!Sousou (Private name: Karin; Courtesy name: Motoku; Expy: Cao Cao)
->Voiced by: Yukie Maeda (credited as Kana Nojima in the visual novel)

The Blonde Queen of the kingdom of Gi and a General of the Kan empire. Sousou likes beautiful women and likes to tease her subordinates, especially her strategist Jun'iku, but is also attracted to Kan'u.
----
* TheAce: In the [[AllThereInTheManual official artbook]], she is ranked at the highest level possible in almost every attribute. Yes, she is pretty much better than everyone in every way.
* AnAdventurerIsYou: A debuffer. Her super techniques are predominantly status reducers and poison.
* BlackComedyRape: She has the habit of forcing girls into sex with her. She is shown succeeding on at least one occasion.
* DarkIsNotEvil: To an extent: she has skulls in her hair and wields a SinisterScythe (see also GirlWithPsychoWeapon below), but she is easily one of the most noble and sympathetic characters in the series.
* DressHitsFloor
* FakeKillScare: In order to test Keifa's loyalty, she swings her scythe around as if to kill her.
* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: Sousou packs a SinisterScythe; combines with a fierce, dark BattleAura if her BerserkButton is pressed
* HiddenHeartOfGold: She isn't as bad as she makes herself to be. Especially evident in the story with Bachou and her father, where she allowed to be known as his murderer to cover his humiliating death.
* InsufferableGenius: In the original game, Sousou spends her time after her defeat in intellectual pursuits. She reads Shu's entire Royal Library, cooks delicious food just by observation, builds a distillery from scratch just by reading a book and annotates Sun Tzu just for fun. She also constantly reminds Kazuto how superior she is to him and to everyone else really. She spent an entire day criticising food stalls and showing the cooks how its really done.
* KissingCousins: Her harem includes Kakoton and Kakouen, who are her cousins.
* LovableSexManiac: She will have sex with any woman she likes and [[BlackComedyRape won't take no for an answer]], and then there are her efforts to get into Kan'u's pants. Still, this is always PlayedForLaughs and she gets presented relatively sympathetically as the series progresses.
* MegaTwintails: She wears her hair in two large drill twintails that are about as big as her own head.
* MistakenForMurderer: In regards to Bachou's father.
* MomentKiller: When things between Sousou and Kan'u were about to get interesting, an assassin comes along and ruins the mood. [[BleachedUnderpants Sorry, fellas]]...
* OjouRinglets: Along with her drill MegaTwintails, she two small ringlets framing her face.
* PsychoLesbian: Sousou ''really'' likes to sleep with women and [[BlackComedyRape doesn't take no for an answer]]. Although, she gets presented [[HiddenHeartOfGold somewhat more positively]] as subsequent seasons roll along. This is carried over from the visual novel where she starts hitting on Kan'u fairly early on and suggests that if Kan'u is ever captured, she will break her and turn her into a SexSlave.
* ScarpiaUltimatum: In the anime, she tells Kan'u that she will release Bachou if she sleeps with her. Kan'u reluctantly agrees, but they are interrupted by a bandit and Sousou decides to release Bachou anyway.
* {{Tsundere}}: Sousou pretends to be the RichBitch to hide her nice side.
** In the games, she's this to Kazuto, with more emphasis on verbal abuse and The Un-giver strategy.
* TsurimeEyes
* ZettaiRyouiki: Grade S; she wears thigh-high stockings, has twintails and is a {{Tsundere}}.

!!Kakoton (Private name: Shunran; Courtesy name: Genjo; Expy: Xiahou Dun)
->Voiced by: Harumi Asai (credited as Haruka Fukai in the visual novel)

Sousou's cousin and one of her commanders. The elder twin of the Kakou Sisters, she is a strong, prideful, hot-headed person yet is understanding and loyal to her cousin whom she loves and understands her feelings.
----
* BerserkButton: Whenever Kazuto trys to steal a march on her for Karin's affections.
* BloodKnight: As Gi's most aggressive general, Kakoton plays the role of that faction's BloodKnight. That does not preclude a strong sense of honor and loyalty however.
* CornerOfWoe: Enters into it when she wasn't chosen to sing in the ''Shin Koihime'' anime
** Her non-selection was apparently justified that she's apparently HollywoodToneDeaf as shown in the ED in the final episode (she's singing her heart out, whereas Kakouen and Kousonsan couldn't stand it and tried drowning it all out with alcohol).
* IdiotHair
* EyepatchOfPower: Only in the visual novels and in the 3rd OVA.
* RapunzelHair: Her hair reaches down to her waist.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Sousou, even by the standards of Gi's main generals who are ALL slavishly devoted to her.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears black thigh-high stockings.

!!Kakouen (Private name: Shuuran; Courtesy name: Myosai; Expy: Xiahou Yuan)
->Voiced by: Airi Yoshida (credited as Aoi Kisaragi in the visual novel)

The younger sister of the Kakou sisters and also Sousou's cousin and a commander of the Gi kingdom.
----
* ArcherArchetype: Her favourite personal weapon although Kakouen's mastery of the bow is not as emphasized as Kouchuu's. Kakouen also fits the personality connected to this archetype very well.
* TheBrigadier: Serves as the level-headed commander of Gi's armies [[RedOniBlueOni in contrast to]] her out-of-control cousin and psychotic strategist.
* DemotedToExtra: Played with: Kakouen's left behind during the HotSpringsEpisode and feels left out; she strikes a symbolic sitting position in the commercial break picture. In the picnic scene of the season one finale, it's her sister Kakoton's turn to get left behind
* IncestSubtext: Implied in the visual novels.
* OnlySaneWoman: She bemoans having to deal with the conflicting personalities in Gi's army and covering up all their foibles while out drinking.
* TheMenFirst: As one of Sousou's top generals, she could eat wherever she wants but prefers to move among the men and goes to lower-key bars to drink.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears black thigh-high stockings.

!!Jun'iku (Private name: Keifa; Courtesy name: Bunjaku; Expy: Xun Yu)
->Voiced by: Oma Ichimura (credited as Miru in the visual novel)

Sousou's trusted adviser and strategist who wears a cat-eared hood. She has a huge crush on Sousou and does not mind being teased by her. She has a rivalry with the Kakou sisters due to the fact they are Sousou's cousins and are closer to her.
----
* BitingTheHandkerchief: In response to Sousou showing apparent affection to other women (or men, for that matter), rather than her
* ExtremeDoormat: Her default personality, where the object of her affections is concerned.
* HairIntakes: The two "cat ears" that are part of her hairdo.
* IKissYourFoot
* InsultBackfire: In the ''Shin Koihime'' anime, Keifa insults Enjutsu by saying all she does is eat honey and sing, comparing her to a cricket. Enjutsu takes the whole thing as a sign of people talking about how great she is
* TheStrategist
* UndyingLoyalty: The only person more devoted to Sousou than Kakouton.

!!Kyocho (Private name: Kii; Courtesy name: Chuukou; Expy: Xu Chu)
->Voiced by: Mariya Sumida (credited as Mariya Sumita in the visual novel)

A small, young girl with great strength and a large appetite, often winning in eating contests. She wields a Flail, with a handle resembling a kendama chained to a huge iron ball with spikes.
----
* CuteBruiser
* HiddenEyes: Part of her "battle transformation"
* EpicFlail: Lampshaded in the anime whenever she brings it out, people stare in shock and verbally wonder where the hell she pulls out the damn weapon.
** And if you look closely, you'll notice it's actually a kendama.
* StandingInTheHall: As punishment for eating during class in the OVA

!!Kakuka (Private name: Rin; Courtesy name: Houkou; Expy: Guo Jia)
->Voiced by: Creator/AsamiImai (credited as Yamazaki Namiko in the visual novel)

A bespectacled female strategist.
----
* {{Meganekko}}
* MistakenForDying: Her personal RunningGag: if she thinks of the slightest perverted thought, a {{Nosebleed}} ensues, leading to HighPressureBlood. So frequently, in fact, she's often found passed out on the ground in a pool of blood, and people think she's dead.
* TheStrategist

!!Teiiku (Private name: Fuu; Courtesy name: Chuutoku; Expy: Cheng Yu)
->Voiced by: Creator/HyoSei ( credited as Elena Kaibara in the visual novel)

The silent adviser girl.
----
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Despite her lethargic demeanor and eccentricities, Teiiku is highly insightful and perceptive as a strategist.
* ExpressiveAccessory: She wears a head ornament that somehow reflects her emotions.
* OralFixation: She is known for always carrying a lollipop.
* RapunzelHair: Her hair is as long as her body.
* TheStrategist

!!Gakushin (Private name: Nagi; Courtesy name: Bunken; Expy: Yue Jin)
->Voiced by: Creator/RyokoOno (credited as Nazuna Gogyou in the visual novel)

A strict general who believes in order and discipline, and as such has a tough time keeping her comrades Riten and Ukin under control, using brute force if necessary.
----
* BareFistedMonk
* BraidsOfAction
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Her numerous scars are all clean cut and almost seem uniform in a way
* RapunzelHair
* RoundhouseKick: One of her special techniques. So awesome, it has its own CG where her foot is [[IncendiaryExponent on fire]].
* ScarsAreForever

!!Riten (Private name: Mao; Courtesy name: Mansei; Expy: Li Dian)
->Voiced by: Rie Nakagawa

A female mechanic. She and her comrade Ukin like to goof around during peacetime, much to the chargin of Gakushin. She is also quite voluptuous given her short stature.
----
* ThisIsADrill: Her signature weapon, a spear with a working drill on the end.
* TooManyBelts: Her leggings are literally held up by straps that attach to her two belts, which she wears in lieu of actual trousers.
* WrenchWench: At least by appearance (it's not known exactly what she works on); made hotter by her breasts (which is HUGE for her build) and her {{Stripperiffic}} outfit
** Her ingenuity's revealed in the anime: one of her inventions is a rifle that fires projectiles using "[[ItRunsOnNonsensoleum hot springs technology]]"
** [[spoiler: In ''Otome Tairan'' she builds a [[DeceptivelyHumanRobots robot duplicate]] of Toutaku that somehow fools Ryofu. And at the end of the season, she builds another based on Sousou, which Kakoton ends up [[RoboSexual cuddling]].]]

!!Ukin (Private name: Sawa; Courtesy name: Bunsoku; Expy: Yu Jin)
->Voiced by: Momo Kasumi (credited as An Haruhi in the visual novel)

Riten's comrade.
----
* CosplayOtakuGirl: In the anime, Ukin is the one who fangirls over the Chou Sisters and choreographs the dances used to oppose them.
* TheChick: This is basically Ukin's role when with her two friends Riten and Gakushin.
* DualWielding
* {{Meganekko}}
* {{Otaku}}: She has shades of this in the anime.

!!Ten'i (Private name: Ruru; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Dian Wei)
->Voiced by: Tomomi Tenjinbayashi (credited as Nonomi Tenkawa in the visual novel)

Kyocho's friend and frequent sparring partner. The two of them tend to cause a lot of property damage during their sparring sessions. Like Kyocho, she sees Kazuto as a big brother, calling him 'Nii-sama'.
----
* HairDecorations
* IdiotHair
* KillerYoYo: She wields a yoyo as a weapon.
* TheRival: To Kyocho, by virtue of them both being short and also having some history.
* TeamChef and SupremeChef: In the anime its shown that she's an excellent cook and Sou Sou's go to girl for talking about recipes.

[[folder: Characters of the Go (Wu) Kingdom]]

!!Sonsaku (Private name: Sheren; Courtesy name: Hakufu; Expy: Sun Ce)
->Voiced by: Nozomi Yoneshima (credited as Yuki Satou in the visual novel)

The queen of Go Kingdom, the eldest sister of the Son family, and leader of the Go faction.
----
* BigScrewedUpFamily
* InstrumentOfMurder: Sonsaku was almost killed by a poisoned blade disguised as a flute.
* GoOutWithASmile
* HimeCut
* KilledOffForReal: Visual novels only
* ParentalAbandonment: Sonsaku's mom dies early on; while it affects her sisters just as much, Sonsaku has some...issues
* PosthumousCharacter: In the first ''Koihime'' visual novel, she is already dead by the time the events of the story take place and she had such an effect on the main generals of Go that her legacy became the driving force for their bid for conquest.
* RapunzelHair
* RousingSpeech: Manages to address her troops and urge them on to victory even after being seriously wounded. This is, of course, accompanied by suitably awesome music written specifically for that scene.
* StatuesqueStunner: Is noticeably one of the tallest characters in the series and her portraits are drawn in ways that emphasize her legs and chest.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pale pink hair.

!!Sonken (Private name: Renfa; Courtesy name: Zhongmou; Expy: Sun Quan)
->Voiced by: Creator/HarumiSakurai (credited as Kazane in the visual novel)

Princess of Go, second sister of the Son family, and Sonsaku's younger sister.
----
* ImportantHaircut: After Sheren dies.
* ShortHairWithTail Most of her hair only reaches her chin, but two long "tails" are grown out on both sides.
* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Kazuto after he proves his worth.
* WhenSheSmiles
* YouAreInCommandNow: She succeeds the throne of Go after the death of her sister but has no interest in conquest or ruling, which is the StartOfDarkness for Meirin.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pale pink hair.

!!Sonshoukou (Private name: Shaoren; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Sun Shangxiang)
->Voiced by: Creator/MinamiHokuto (credited as Hitomi in the anime)

The youngest sister of the Son family and a princess of Go.
----
* BareYourMidriff
* BrattyHalfPint
* HairDecorations: Her dragonfly hair pin.
* OdangoHair: She wears her hair in doughnut-like odangos.
* RoyalBrat
* SpoiledBrat
* ThirdPersonPerson: She refers to herself as Shao instead of using a pronoun.
* WellExcuseMePrincess
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pale pink hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears white thigh-high stockings.

!!Shuuyu (Private name: Meirin; Courtesy name: Kokin; Expy: Zhou Yu)
->Voiced by: Rino Kawashima (visual novel), Kei Mizusawa (anime)

Go Kingdom's master strategist. She is a close confidant and lover to Queen Sonsaku who understands her Queen's ambition.
----
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:She gets resurrected in the harem ending of the first visual novel and is finally free from the legacy that chained her down throughout the entire plot.]]
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Although nominally Sonsaku's vassal, the fact that Renfa abdicates so much responsibility means that Meirin basically runs the army and resents her for not doing more conquering. Bad move.
* GoOutWithASmile: At the end of the Go route in the visual novel.
* PaperThinDisguise: Shuuyu employs this in the first OVA
* ThePlan: Shuuyu pulls one off to expose the traitor in Sonsaku's family
* StartOfDarkness: Completely driven by Sheren's death to carry out her legacy, she rebels against Sonken and takes control of Go's armies for herself, urged on by Ukitsu.
* TheStrategist
* UndyingLoyalty: She has sworn loyalty to Queen Sonsaku until their task is done.

!!Kannei (Private name: Shishun; Courtesy name: Koha; Expy: Gan Ning)
->Voiced by: Creator/RyoukoTanaka (credited as Hikaru Isshiki in the visual novel)

A loyal bodyguard and warrior to the Son family.
----
* HotBlooded: The most outwardly passionate and aggressive member of the Go faction.
* ProudWarriorRaceGirl: As Koumei learned in the anime, question Kannei's loyalty to the Son Clan or her honor as a warrior at your own peril.

!!Rikuson (Private name: Non; Courtesy name: Hakugen; Expy: Lu Xun)
->Voiced by: Creator/NatsumiYanase (credited as Izumi Maki in the visual novel)

Shuuyu's beloved disciple. A smart yet air-headed official who loves to read books as in her own words; gaining knowledge gives her such pleasure.
----
* CuteBookworm: Rikuson has a...special relationship with books
* HotLibrarian

!!Daikyou (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Da Qiao)
->Voiced by: Michiru Yuimoto

One of Shuuyu's personal "pets" who, together with her twin sister Shoukyou, have the sole purpose of entertaining her.
----
* GiantWaistRibbon
* HairIntakes: Her hairdo has two of what look like cat ears.
* {{Hermaphrodite}}
* IdiotHair
* OdangoHair: She has two bun covers on either side of her head.
* RoseHairedSweetie
* SlaveCollar
* TaremeEyes
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pink hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears purple thigh-high stockings.

!!Shoukyou (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Xiao Qiao)
->Voiced by: Michiru Yuimoto

Daikyou's twin siter. Like her sister, Shoukyou is one of Shuuyu's personal "pets" who have the sole purpose of entertaining her.
----
* GiantWaistRibbon
* HairIntakes: Like her sister, her hairdo has two of what look like cat ears.
* IdiotHair
* OdangoHair: Like her sister, she has two bun covers on either side of her head.
* RoseHairedSweetie
* SlaveCollar
* TsurimeEyes: Her sharp eyes are the only way set her apart from her twin sister.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pink hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears purple thigh-high stockings.

!!Shuutai (Private name: Minmei; Courtesy name: Youhei; Expy: Zhou Tai)
->Voiced by: Ichigo Momoi

An officer of Go Kingdom.
----
* {{BFS}}: She wields a sword that's as long as she is tall.
* CutenessProximity
* KindheartedCatLover
* {{Ninja}}
* RapunzelHair

!!Kougai (Private name: Sai; Courtesy name: Koufuku; Expy: Huang Gai)
->Voiced by: Miyabi Shion

A general of Go Kingdom.
----
* AdultChild: Can come across like this in the Go route of SKM. At times she can be seen as an adult Rinrin.
* FakeDefector: A la her historical counterpart Kougai feigns defection to Sousou and later sets the latter's ships on fire at the Battle of Red Cliff.

!!Ryomou (Private name: Ashe; Courtesy name: Shimei; Expy: Lu Meng)
->Voiced by: Creator/KaoriMizuhashi

A bespectacled officer of Go Kingdom.
----
* BlindWithoutEm: Ryomou's farsighted with her right eye, thus wears a unique monocle. It's a case of this trope because without it, she resorts to squinting, which may lead to a case of misinterpreting her as ill-tempered
* BodyguardCrush: Towards Sonken

[[/folder]]

[[folder: Characters of the To Faction]]

!!Toutaku (Private name: Yue; Courtesy name: Chuei; Expy: Dong Zhuo)
->Voiced by: Ayaka Kimura (visual novel), Creator/YukaInokuchi (anime)

The ruler of the To empire. Unlike her real life counterpart, who was a tyrannical and cruel man, she is a kind, sweet, timid and innocent girl who wants to help her country and her people no matter the circumstance.
----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Kaku.
* DeathFakedForYou: Two instances: in the first visual novel, [[spoiler: where she winds up becoming a {{Meido}} in service for Kazuto]]; in ''Otome Tairan'', [[spoiler: using the severed head of Riten-crafted Toutaku-lookalike puppet]]. In both cases, it's because [[spoiler: many lords still want Toutaku's head, regardless of whether she wasn't part of the conspiracy or not]].
** [[spoiler: Actually, Toutaku wanted to [[HonorBeforeReason atone for the crimes]] brought against her, going as far as to declare committing {{Seppuku}} in ''Otome Tairan'' even if she's given no punishment. The use of the puppet was partly a means to avert that, while the other part was utilizing Toutaku's KingIncognito tendencies to declare her to be [[MistakenForAnImposter someone else]]]].
* {{Frameup}}: In ''Otome Tairan'', [[spoiler: as part of Choujou's and Ukitsu's conspiracy plans, she is taken prisoner, and her kingdom is turned into a dystopian tyrrany while the enslaved subjects are led to believe she's behind all of it. She finally escapes her prison in episode 10, and will try to clear herself and liberate her kingdom starting next episode.]]
* KingIncognito: In her first appearance.
* NiceGirl: A stark contrast to her historic male counterpart.
* PuppyDogEyes: Seems to be Toutaku's special technique... it's unbeatable by normal means.
** Especially amusing since she's Dong Zhuo's expy, who historically was cruel, tyrannical ruler. Admittingly, her "special technique" is still quite evil.

!!Kaku (Private name: Ei; Courtesy name: Bunwa; Expy: Jia Xu)
->Voiced by: Yukari Aoyama (visual novel), Akane Tomonaga (anime)

Toutaku's strategist and adviser. While short-tempered and a serious minded girl, she does not have the heart to say no to her childhood friend Yue.
----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Yue.
* TheJinx: Ei has very bad luck personally but once a month it extends to everyone around her, especially if you have had looked into her eyes that day. This drops on the Shu generals without warning. HilarityEnsues.
** In the visual novel, however, this appears to be averted in Kazuto's case and certainly in Totaku's case and, as much as she tries to invoke it on him, the lack of success seems to suggest that people she cares about are exempt.
* SandInMyEyes: When she discovers that [[spoiler: Kayuu is alive after she helps Toutaku and Kaku escape from the capital]]
* TheStrategist
* {{Tsundere}}: Type A to Kazuto.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Green hair, in her case.

!!Kayuu (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Hua Xiong)
->Voiced by: Miya Serizono (credited as Hiroka Nishizawa in the anime)

A brave general of the To army. This silver-haired beauty has absolute confidence in her fighting skills. She is also easy going as she doesn't mind if her leader Toutaku goes visiting commoners in disguise, as she believes it will help their country's welfare if she sees their problems through her own eyes.
----
* AnAxeToGrind
* BackFromTheDead: Somewhat subverted: in ''Otome Tairan'' [[spoiler: she went MIA after a last ditch battle and was presumed dead (she later revealed that she was eventually captured by the enemy, but was treated well due to her fighting prowess, and because of that she then easily escaped), but turned out to be lurking around InTheHood for a while before making a BigDamnHeroes comeback later on]]
* DemotedToExtra: Just like the character she is based on, she always [[spoiler: dies in each scenario]] in the first two games. The only time she [[spoiler:ever survives]] is if the player achieves 100% of the endings or if her faction is allied with the player's faction in ''Shin Koihime''. But the worse part? She is the '''only''' female character in the series that doesn't have a sex scene! Poor girl.
* KilledOffForReal: In the first visual novel.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: In a next episode preview of season one, Kayuu claims the right to announce the episode title because she's going to "die early". In case you didn't know, Hua Xiong ''did'' die early in the original epic.
* PutOnABus: She only makes one small cameo in the third game.

!!Ryofu (Private name: Ren; Courtesy name: Hosen; Expy: Lü Bu)
->Voiced by: Honoka Imuraya (visual novel), Emiko Hagiwara (anime)

A silent girl who is the greatest and the most powerful warrior of all in the kingdoms. She was thought as a monster in the mountains, but it all ended in a misunderstanding as she was trying to help her pet dogs.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: Ryofu wants to set one up for her BigFriendlyDog Chouchou.
* BadassAdorable: Ryofu is a innocent and kind hearted person, but she can fight Aisha and Rinrin '''at once''' without breaking a sweat.
** Her Ougi is absolutely monstrous. Rinrin's has a 5-turn charge and kills ~10% of the enemy's original forces. Sui's has a 4-turn charge, killing ~12% of the enemy's original forces. Ryofu's takes only ''3'' turns and kills ''~25%''. Without Shuri's ability to negate enemy special attacks, she'd completely wipe you out when you finally fight her.
* TheBigGirl: Her stat pentagon in the [[AllThereInTheManual artbook]] has her strength at the highest possible level but in other areas, she is weak or average.
* CompletelyMissingThePoint - Never try to argue with, or point something out to Ryofu; she just won't get it.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Red hair and eyes.
* CutenessProximity: She loves animals and shows her softer side in regards to her pets.
** Other characters are also subject to Cuteness Proximity when close to ''her''. The first visual novel suggests that she is aware of this and consciously exploits it to get food.
* DarkSkinnedRedhead
* EmotionlessGirl: Ryofu's the exact polar opposite of her loud-mouthed, antagonistic character she's based on. {{Lampshaded}} by Kazuto, who believes it may be a side effect of the GenderFlip.
* FriendToAllLivingThings
* HairAntennae: Sports an antennae in a rather unique variant in which they slope backwards, rather then forwards. It's further exaggerated in her SuperDeformed appearance.
* RedEyesTakeWarning
* SugarAndIcePersonality: She usually does not show any emotion at all but is really a good-hearted person.
* {{Tykebomb}}: She does not remember where she came from, only that she wandered around China fighting as a soldier before eventually finding her way into Toutaku's army.
* [[WorldsStrongestMan World's Strongest Woman]]: She's so strong that ''Chouhi'' can't even block her attacks without hurting herself. When Kazuto slept in and she wanted to wake him, her answer was to effortlessly pick up a giant desk and drop it on him. She does more damage than any other character in the visual novel, and can fight off Chouun, Chouhi, and Kan'u at the same time--who are, just below Ryofu, close contenders for the titles of "greatest warrior in the world".
** She has only been defeated in combat once, and that was in a sparring match after defeating '''every single combat-capable Shoku general''' one after the other, until by the last match she had completely exhausted herself. People call her a monster, and for good reason.

!!Chouryou (Private name: Shia; Courtesy name: Bun'en; Expy: Zhang Liao)
->Voiced by: Kaoru Morota (credited as AYA in the visual novel)

A beautiful, proud warrior who looks like a Yakuza gangster. She likes a good and honest fight and detests cheating. She is an avid lover of wine.
----
* BloodKnight: Chouryou tends to really enjoy a prolonged fight and gets pissed if she can't finish it properly.
* BoisterousBruiser: Being TheIdiotFromOsaka qualifies her as one
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Basically joins anyone who defeats her. In the visual novel, defects to Sousou from Toutaku, then defects to Hongou.
** She does feel bad about it, however, and makes not fighting her previous ally a condition of her defection.
* ClothingDamage: In ''Otome Tairan'', after she and Kan'u have an intense battle, her {{Sarashi}} gets ripped.
* DrunkenMaster: Although she doesn't really rely on alcohol, Chouryou certainly invokes the image in her first appearance.
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: Less of an idiot, but Chouryou does enjoy drinking, fighting and speaking with a KansaiRegionalAccent.
* KansaiRegionalAccent: She speaks with a Kansai dialect.
* {{Sarashi}}: She comes with them included, even when she's dressed as a {{Meido}}. In the OVA, she wears it under her jacket (and it even serves as her only upper garment when she [[CoatOverTheShoulder carries her jacket slung over her shoulder]])
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: Chouryou defects against the debt collectors that hire her, because they're simply swindlers and she has her honor
* SpikesOfVillainy: Her ''hairband'', though she isn't entirely evil...just doing her job (despite knowingly working for criminals that terrorize civilians.....)
* StalkerWithACrush: In the visual novel towards Kan'u after being defeated by her, though in Chouryou's case, there was little, if any, "real" stalking. There's just loads of audacity and obsessing on her part; she even modeled her weapon as a black version of Kan'u's own.
** [[spoiler: She eventually does this as well in ''Otome Tairan'', and is last seen trying to feed Kan'u before being interrupted by Ryuubi.]]
* ToBeAMaster: Chouryou has stated that she fights to prove that she is the strongest warrior
* TurnCoat: In the visual novels: for the first game, she starts out in Toutaku's faction, then joined Sousou after being defeated by them, and then joined and stayed with Kazuto's faction after being defeated by Kan'u. The same applies to ''Shin Koihime'', but her true allegiance lies with Gi.
* WorthyOpponent: As much as she enjoys fights, Chouryou's only interested in the fair ones or ones that provide a challenge.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has purple hair.

!!Chinkyuu (Private name: Nenene; Courtesy name: Koudai; Expy: Chen Gong)
->Voiced by: Kokoko Tsubakimaru (visual novel), Michiru Yuimoto (anime)

A self-proclaimed partner and advisor of Ryofu, and considers herself Ryofu's protector, dishing out punishment to anyone doing anything she considers offensive to Ryofu (like she did to Kazuto when he bought Ryofu a bagful of nikuman in public, resulting in one of Ryofu's attention-getting eating escapades). She sports an officer's cap with a panda symbol on it.
----
* DynamicEntry: Chinkyuu delivers a flying knee drop to Chouhi after an argument at a gift shop in the ''Shin Koihime'' anime. Despite seeing her kick someone she met before in an unwarranted way, Ryofu [[DoWrongRight tells her she did the attack wrong]]
** Taken from the visual novel where she attacks Kazuto with a flaming dive kick when he starts getting too close to Ryofu. She also has a very prominent [[BuffySpeak flipping-the-table-over-type animation]].
* GirlishPigtails
* HairDecorations
* TheStrategist
* TheTeamNormal: In the anime, Chinkyuu is an entirely ordinary orphan girl saved from starvation by Ryofu. Unlike Houtou or Koumei, she is not a ChildProdigy and she lacks the superhuman strength of some other TokenMiniMoe characters like Chouhi or Kyochou.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has cyan colored hair.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: Characters of the En Faction]]

!!Enshou (Private name: Reiha; Courtesy name: Honsho; Expy: Yuan Shao)
->Voiced by: Kanami Kono (visual novel), Masami Katou (anime)

Head of the noble En family and the lord of Kei Province. She is a proud, spoiled and selfish woman who is always causing trouble for her advisers, Bunshuu and Ganryou. She tries hides her true character from Sousou, whom she sees as a no-good brat.
----
* BananaPeel: A whole bunch of them in the OVA.
* DumbBlonde
* HypocriticalHumor: She complains constantly about Sousou's verbal sniping and hitting on every girl around her while verbally sniping at her and bragging about her own "[[BlatantLies skill]]" with the ladies.
* NakedOnArrival: In the anime, she's introduced while taking a bath.
* NoblewomansLaugh
* OhCrap: In the OVA, when Enshou wins the student council president election, she realizes she has to be [[spoiler:kissed by Principal Chousen]].
* OjouRinglets: Taken UpToEleven. She has long blonde hair styled in enormous ringlets with two of them as sidelocks that fall in front of her shoulders. She's the head of a noble family.
* RapunzelHair
* WeHaveReserves: Not, unusually, because she's evil. Just stupid and oblivious.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears thigh-high boots and stockings.

!!Bunshuu (Private name: Iishe; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Wen Chou)
->Voiced by: Sumire Murasakibana (visual novel), Chiro Kanzaki (anime)

One of Enshou's advisers. She is a natural gambler who likes to take risks on everything but keeps getting herself and others into trouble. Despite her position as an adviser, she is not really smart, is brash, and tends to say things without thinking about it firsthand, which tend to embarrass her master.
----
* {{BFS}}
* BrutalHonesty: She occassionaly spews out embarrassing facts about Enshou without thinking.
* HairDecorations: Her headband.
* IdiotHair
* StockingFiller: She wears garters to hold up her stockings.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has cyan colored hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears white thigh-high stockings.

!!Ganryou (Private name: Toshi; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Yan Liang)
->Voiced by: Miu Aoi (visual novel), Rie Hazuki (anime)

Enshou's other adviser. While she may seem timid and weak compared to Enshou and Bunshuu, she is fact the smartest of the three and is the only one with common sense.
----
* DropTheHammer: her weapon of choice although she is also skilled at unarmed combat.
* OnlySaneWoman: Especially in the first game, she is the long suffering brake on Enshou's insane arrogance and Bunshuu's carefree attitude. She goes on to commiserate with Gi's straight man, Kakouen.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears thigh-high stockings.

!!Enjutsu (Private name: Miu; Courtesy name: Kouro; Expy: Yuan Shu)
->Voiced by: Ayano Makida (visual novel), Creator/ErikoNakamura (anime)

Enshou's bratty and manipulative cousin.
----
* RoyalBrat: At her first introduction, when she's so uncaring about her citizens and is only concerned about the perks of royalty. Eventually subverted after she's spooked by a ghost (largely, as she still exhibits bratty tendencies, but not to the same extent as before).
* {{Hermaphrodite}}: In the Shin Koihime Musou VN via magic honey. Nanano is her lover.
* ManipulativeBitch
* OjouRinglets: While not as exaggerated as her cousin, she has straight hair that curls into ringlets.
* RapunzelHair
* WeightWoe: She's constantly conscious of her figure.

!!Choukun (Private name: Nanano; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Zhang Xun)
->Voiced by: Creator/ChiakiTakahashi

Enjutsu's aide, who is just as manipulative, albeit smarter, than Enjutsu, enough to manipulate Enjutsu herself.
----
* BitchInSheepsClothing: She normally projects a very friendly persona that earns everyone's respect, but is really a ManipulativeBitch behind the scenes given the opportunity.
* ManipulativeBitch
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair

[[folder: Other Characters]]

!!Kazuto Hongo
->Voiced by: Creator/TakahiroMizushima (Drama CD)

The main character of the visual novel series. He is a modern day Japanese student who was sent back in time to Ancient China when he attempted to stop a mysterious student from stealing an ancient Chinese mirror within the school's collection and ended up breaking the mirror in the process. Due to his abnormal costume (his school uniform) and manner of speech (English loanwords), he is mistaken to be the "Messenger from Heaven" who is said to be able to bring peace to China.
----
* BadassNormal: Was able to take down a motherf***ing dragon with some faceless soldiers.
* BishieSparkle: When Ashe get's her glasses cleaned she is unable to look at him due to his shininess reflecting on her glasses.
* ChickMagnet
* CipherScything: Does not exist in the {{Animated Adaptation}}s.
* ChivalrousPervert: Definitely has his perverted side but he's actually very kind to girls.
** For the most part. Sometimes he's just shy of a rapist, particularly when it comes to Sui.
* TheFaceless: [[spoiler:Averted: Achieving the harem ending of the first game reveals his face in full, as do a number of scenes in the sequels.]]
* FishOutOfWater
* GenreSavvy: In ''Sengoku Koihime''. He trained his nephew to prepare him for his own journey to the past, meaning he's much more prepared than he is.
* HeirToTheDojo: The third generation to his kendo-practicing family
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Invoked by his allies, [[spoiler:but ultimately subverted as this proves to be his trump card.]]
* NonActionGuy: Subverted. As HeirToTheDojo, Kazuto's not '''terrible''' in an ordinary fight. Unfortunately, he landed in a world full of terrifying superwomen.
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent
* TookALevelInBadass: The second game has him becoming a bit more active and less of a doormat to the rest of the girls. He becomes a tactician whose tactics are the basics turned UpToEleven, and even Sosou finds him interesting from the very start instead of halfway through the game as in the first game.

!!Kousonsan (Private name: Pairen; Courtesy name: Hakukei; Expy: Gongsun Zan
->Voiced by: Creator/ShihoKawaragi (credited as Kaname Yuzuki in the visual novel)

A feudal lord who wishes to protect her people from a recent rise of banditry.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: Ryuubi can't remember [[strike:Paipai]] Pairen's name.
* AscendedExtra: Started as a minor character in the first game.

!!Chousen (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Diao Chan)
->Voiced by: Creator/NorioWakamoto

A big, muscular, bald and pigtailed man wearing a thong in contrast of the legendary beautiful woman as in the historical novel.
----
* BerserkButton: Whatever you do, ''don't tell him he's not pretty''; he doesn't take that very well
* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler: In the first game, he turns out to have a major role in the universe Kazuto ended up in, and also has a lot involvement with Ukitsu and Saji.]]
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: He acts like an idiot half the time, but he's actually incredibly strong.
* MachoCamp

-->Koumei: Kada? Of The Way of the Five Grains?
-->Kada: NO!
-->Girls: Eh?
-->Kada: It's '''[[LargeHam THE WAY OF FIVE GRAINS!!]]'''
-->Girls: Oh.
-->Kada: It's very important to give it appropriate emphasis.
-->Koumei: I-I'll remember that...
-->Kan'u: So, Shuri, what is the Way... I mean, '''[[LargeHam THE WAY OF FIVE GRAINS!!]]''' all about?

A white-haired mustached man wearing a loincloth under a blazer, instead of a woman in the historical novel, depicted as the queen of Wa (the ancient Chinese name of Japan) who shows up in the special campaign unlocked after completing the campaigns of the three warring factions. Apparently has a history with Chousen.

!!Riri (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Xu)

* FourEyesZeroSoul

* CoolBigSis: To Rinrin.

* AnimalMotifs: The tiger.
* BalloonBelly: In episode 7 of season one
* BareYourMidriff
* BigSisterWorship: She and Kan'u aren't real sisters, but Chouhi clearly adores her.
* BoyishShortHair
* BrattyHalfPint: To cope with her loneliness, she became a troublemaker and formed a band of "bandits" with the other children of her village to play pranks on the adults until Kan'u stopped her.
* BrutalHonesty: She takes the "brutal" part of the trope to its finest.
* CatapultNightmare
* CuteBruiser
* CuteLittleFangs
* FieryRedhead
* LittleMissBadass
* ScarfOfAsskicking

* DamselInDistress:
* {{Gainaxing}}: Purposely done in episode 8.
She ended up on what she presumed was a DesertedIsland, but it turned out to be the same island resort the rest of the
cast went to (she was rescued by the Nanban Barbarians who lived there; apparently they never ventured far enough from their home to the "resort" area until the [[AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever Giant Octo-Payapaya incident]])]]
* WhiteMage: All
of her super techniques in the visual novel are healing moves of varying power levels.

* CleavageWindow
* TheTease

* TomboyishPonytail

* NiceGirl
* OnlySaneWoman
* ShrinkingViolet: She is quite shy and timid.
* StockingFiller: She wears garters to hold up her stockings.
* TheStrategist: Unsurprisingly, given who she's an expy of.
* TokenMiniMoe

* BadassCape
* CleavageWindow

----
* BodyguardCrush: On Ryuubi.

->Voiced by: Ringo Aoba

Bachou's cousin. Despite being younger than Bachou, she has no issues being around men. In fact she often teases Bachō about the latter's issues with men.
----
* BalloonBelly: Batai in episode 4 of season three
* CheshireCatGrin

----
* GirlishPigtails
* RapunzelHair: Her twintails go past her waist.
* RobeAndWizardHat: She dresses like a witch for some reason.
* ShrinkingViolet
* TokenMiniMoe

* DarkIsNotEvil: To an extent: she has skulls in her hair and wields a SinisterScythe (see also GirlWithPsychoWeapon below), but she is easily one of the most noble and sympathetic
characters in the series.
* DressHitsFloor
* MomentKiller: When things
''Koihime†Musou'' franchise, divided between Sousou and Kan'u were about to get interesting, an assassin comes along and ruins the mood.
* TsurimeEyes

* IdiotHair
* EyepatchOfPower: Only in
the visual novels and in the 3rd OVA.
Anime.

[[index]]

* RapunzelHair: Her hair reaches down to her waist.
[[Characters/KoihimeMusouAnime Anime]]

* IKissYourFoot
* InsultBackfire: In the ''Shin Koihime'' anime, Keifa insults Enjutsu by saying all she does is eat honey and sing, comparing her to a cricket. Enjutsu takes the whole thing as a sign of people talking about how great she is
* TheStrategist

----
* CuteBruiser

----
* {{Meganekko}}
* MistakenForDying: Her personal RunningGag: if she thinks of the slightest perverted thought, a {{Nosebleed}} ensues, leading to HighPressureBlood. So frequently, in fact, she's often found passed out on the ground in a pool of blood, and people think she's dead.
* TheStrategist

* TheStrategist

----
* BareFistedMonk
* BraidsOfAction
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Her numerous scars are all clean cut and almost seem uniform in a way
* RapunzelHair
* RoundhouseKick: One of her special techniques. So awesome, it has its own CG where her foot is [[IncendiaryExponent on fire]].
* ScarsAreForever

!!Riten (Private name: Mao; Courtesy name: Mansei; Expy: Li Dian)
->Voiced by: Rie Nakagawa

* DualWielding
* {{Meganekko}}

----
* HairDecorations
* IdiotHair

->Voiced by: Nozomi Yoneshima (credited as Yuki Satou in the visual novel)

The queen of Go Kingdom, the eldest sister of the Son family, and leader of the Go faction.
----
* BigScrewedUpFamily
* InstrumentOfMurder: Sonsaku was almost killed by a poisoned blade disguised as a flute.
* GoOutWithASmile
* HimeCut
* KilledOffForReal:
[[Characters/KoihimeMusouVisualNovel Visual novels only
* ParentalAbandonment: Sonsaku's mom dies early on; while it affects her sisters just as much, Sonsaku has some...issues
* PosthumousCharacter: In the first ''Koihime'' visual novel, she is already dead by the time the events of the story take place and she had such an effect on the main generals of Go that her legacy became the driving force for their bid for conquest.
* RapunzelHair

----
* ImportantHaircut: After Sheren dies.
* ShortHairWithTail Most of her hair only reaches her chin, but two long "tails" are grown out on both sides.
* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Kazuto after he proves his worth.
* WhenSheSmiles

* SpoiledBrat
* ThirdPersonPerson: She refers to herself as Shao instead of using a pronoun.
* WellExcuseMePrincess

* TheStrategist

* HotLibrarian

!!Daikyou (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Da Qiao)
->Voiced by: Michiru Yuimoto

One of Shuuyu's personal "pets" who, together with her twin sister Shoukyou, have the sole purpose of entertaining her.
----
* GiantWaistRibbon
* HairIntakes: Her hairdo has two of what look like cat ears.
* {{Hermaphrodite}}
* IdiotHair
* OdangoHair: She has two bun covers on either side of her head.
* RoseHairedSweetie
* SlaveCollar
* TaremeEyes
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: She has pink hair.
* ZettaiRyouiki: She wears purple thigh-high stockings.

!!Shoukyou (Private name: N/A; Courtesy name: N/A; Expy: Xiao Qiao)
->Voiced by: Michiru Yuimoto

Daikyou's twin siter. Like her sister, Shoukyou is one of Shuuyu's personal "pets" who have the sole purpose of entertaining her.
----
* GiantWaistRibbon
* HairIntakes: Like her sister, her hairdo has two of what look like cat ears.
* IdiotHair
* OdangoHair: Like her sister, she has two bun covers on either side of her head.
* RoseHairedSweetie
* SlaveCollar

->Voiced by: Ichigo Momoi

An officer of Go Kingdom.
----
* {{BFS}}: She wields a sword that's as long as she is tall.
* CutenessProximity
* KindheartedCatLover
* {{Ninja}}
* RapunzelHair

!!Kougai (Private name: Sai; Courtesy name: Koufuku; Expy: Huang Gai)
->Voiced by: Miyabi Shion

->Voiced by: Creator/KaoriMizuhashi

* BodyguardCrush: Towards Sonken

----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Kaku.

----
* ChildhoodFriends: With Yue.
* TheStrategist
* {{Tsundere}}: Type A to Kazuto.

----
* AnAxeToGrind

* DarkSkinnedRedhead
* EmotionlessGirl: Ryofu's the exact polar opposite of her loud-mouthed, antagonistic character she's based on. {{Lampshaded}} by Kazuto, who believes it may be a side effect of the GenderFlip.
* FriendToAllLivingThings
* HairAntennae: Sports an antennae in a rather unique variant in which they slope backwards, rather then forwards. It's further exaggerated in her SuperDeformed appearance.
* RedEyesTakeWarning

* GirlishPigtails
* HairDecorations
* TheStrategist

* DumbBlonde
* NoblewomansLaugh
* RapunzelHair

----
* {{BFS}}
* BrutalHonesty: She occassionaly spews out embarrassing facts about Enshou without thinking.
* HairDecorations: Her headband.
* IdiotHair

* RoyalBrat: At her first introduction, when she's so uncaring about her citizens and is only concerned about the perks of royalty. Eventually subverted after she's spooked by a ghost (largely, as she still exhibits bratty tendencies, but not to the same extent as before).

* ManipulativeBitch
* OjouRinglets: While not as exaggerated as her cousin, she has straight hair that curls into ringlets.

* ManipulativeBitch
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair

!!Kazuto Hongo
->Voiced by: Creator/TakahiroMizushima (Drama CD)

* ChickMagnet
* FishOutOfWater
* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent
* TookALevelInBadass: The second game has him becoming a bit more active and less of a doormat to the rest of the girls. He becomes a tactician whose tactics are the basics turned UpToEleven, and even Sosou finds him interesting from the very start instead of halfway through the game as in the first game.

----
* BerserkButton: Whatever you do, ''don't tell him he's not pretty''; he doesn't take that very well
* ChekhovsGunman: [[spoiler: In the first game, he turns out to have a major role in the universe Kazuto ended up in, and also has a lot involvement with Ukitsu and Saji.]]

* MachoCamp

* PunctuatedForEmphasis: Kada insists the name of the guild he's affiliated with be called out in the loudest and most dramatic fashion every time. Lampshaded in the following dialogue:
-->Koumei: Kada? Of The Way of the Five Grains?
-->Kada: NO!
-->Girls: Eh?
-->Kada: It's '''[[LargeHam THE WAY OF FIVE GRAINS!!]]'''
-->Girls: Oh.
-->Kada: It's very important to give it appropriate emphasis.

->Voiced by: Creator/TakehitoKoyasu (credited as Jack Cloud in the visual novel)

* FourEyesZeroSoul
* InvincibleVillain: [[spoiler: Only the "invincible" part: he can only be killed by Ryuubi's [[ChekhovsGun new sword]], but brushes off any other weapon, like he did with Kouchuu's arrow. Otherwise he's [[ManipulativeBastard not as boring]] as most InvincibleVillain types]]

Per TRS, Jerkass Facade is deprecated, primarily in favor of Hidden Heart Of Gold.

* HiddenHeartOfGold: She isn't as bad as she makes herself to be. Especially evident in the story with Bachou and her father, where she allowed to be known as his murderer to cover his humiliating death.

* JerkassFacade: She isn't as bad as she makes herself to be. Especially evident in the story with Bachou and her father, where she allowed to be known as his murderer to cover his humiliating death.

* PsychoLesbian: Sousou ''really'' likes to sleep with women and [[BlackComedyRape doesn't take no for an answer]]. Although, she gets presented [[JerkassFacade somewhat more positively]] as subsequent seasons roll along. This is carried over from the visual novel where she starts hitting on Kan'u fairly early on and suggests that if Kan'u is ever captured, she will break her and turn her into a SexSlave.

** Especially amusing since she's Dong Zhuo's expy, who historically was cruel, tyrannical ruler. Admittingly, her "special technique" is still quite evil
